In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of quantum walks on a graph structure resulting from the integration of a main connected graph $G$ and a secondary connected graph $G'$. This composite graph is formed by a disjoint union of $G$ and $G'$, followed by the contraction of a selected pair of vertices creating a cut vertex $v^*$ and leading to a unique form of geometric perturbation. Our study focuses on instances where $G$ is a complete graph $K_N$ and $G'$ is a star graph $S_m$. The core of our analysis lies in exploring the impact of this geometric perturbation on the success probability of quantum walk-based search algorithms, particularly in an oracle-free context. Despite initial findings suggesting a low probability of locating the perturbed vertex $v^*$, we demonstrate that introducing a phase reversal to the system significantly enhances the success rate. Our results reveal that with an optimal running time and specific parameter conditions, the success probability can be substantially increased. The paper is structured to first define the theoretical framework, followed by the presentation of our main results, detailed proofs, and concluding with a summary of our findings and potential future research directions.
In this paper, we introduce a discrete quantum walk model called bipartite walks. Bipartite walks include many known discrete quantum walk models, like arc-reversal walks, vertex-face walks. For the transition matrix of a quantum walk, there is a Hamiltonian associated with it. We will study the Hamiltonians of the bipartite walks. Let $S$ be a skew-symmetric matrix. We are mainly interested in the Hamiltonians of the form $iS$. We show that the Hamiltonian can be written as $iS$ if and only if the adjacency matrix of the bipartite graph is invertible. We show that arc-reversal walks and verte…
Quantum walks of interacting particles may display non-trivial features due to the interplay between the statistical nature and the many-body interactions associated to them. We analyze the quantum walk of interacting defects on top of an uniform bosonic Mott insulator at unit filling in an one dimensional graph. While the quantum walk of single particle defect shows trivial features, the case of two particles exhibits interesting phenomenon of quantum walk reversal as a function of additional onsite three-body attractive interactions. In the absence of the three-body interaction a quantum wal…
In this paper we show how using complex valued edge weights in a graph can completely suppress the flow of probability amplitude in a continuous time quantum walk to specific vertices of the graph when the edge weights, graph topology and initial state of the quantum walk satisfy certain conditions. The conditions presented in this paper are derived from the so-called chiral quantum walk, a variant of the continuous time quantum walk which incorporates directional bias with respect to site transfer probabilities between vertices of a graph by using complex edge weights. We examine the necessit…

Inspired by recent breakthroughs with topological quantum materials, which pave the way to novel, high-efficiency, low-energy magnetoelectric devices and fault-tolerant quantum information processing, inter alia, topological quantum walks have emerged as an exciting topic in its own right, especially due to the theoretical and experimental simplifications this approach offers. Motivated by impressive progress in topological quantum walks, we provide a perspective on theoretical studies and experimental investigations of topological quantum walks focusing on current explorations of topological …
Quantum random walks use interference to obtain faster state space exploration, which can be used for algorithmic purposes. Photonic technologies provide a natural platform for many recent experimental demonstrations. Here we analyze quantum random walks implemented by coherent light propagation in series-coupled photonic ring resonators. We propose a family of graphs modeling these devices and compare quantum and classical random walks on these structures, calculating steady-state and time-dependent solutions. We obtain conditions for quantum advantage in this setting and show how to recover …
Given its importance to many other areas of physics, from condensed matter physics to thermodynamics, time-reversal symmetry has had relatively little influence on quantum information science. Here we develop a network-based picture of time-reversal theory, classifying Hamiltonians and quantum circuits as time-symmetric or not in terms of the elements and geometries of their underlying networks. Many of the typical circuits of quantum information science are found to exhibit time-asymmetry. Moreover, we show that time-asymmetry in circuits can be controlled using local gates only, and can simu…
The formalism of continuous-time quantum walks on graphs has been widely used in the study of quantum transport of energy and information, as well as in the development of quantum algorithms. In experimental settings, however, there is limited control over the coupling coefficients between the different nodes of the graph (which are usually considered to be real-valued), thereby restricting the types of quantum walks that can be implemented. In this work, we apply the idea of Floquet engineering in the context of continuous-time quantum walks, i.e., we define periodically-driven Hamiltonians w…
$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, namely, a combined parity and time-reversal symmetry can make non-unitary quantum walks exhibit entirely real eigenenergy. However, it is known that the concept of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can be generalized and an arbitrary anti-unitary symmetry has a possibility to substitute $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. The aim of the present work is to seek such non-unitary quantum walks with generalized $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry by focusing on effects of spatially random disorder which breaks $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. We numerically find non-unitary quantum walks whose quasi-energy is ent…
Dynamical evolution of systems with sparse Hamiltonians can always be recognized as continuous time quantum walks (CTQWs) on graphs. In this paper, we analyze the short time asymptotics of CTQWs. In recent studies, it was shown that for the classical diffusion process the short time asymptotics of the transition probabilities follows power laws whose exponents are given by the usual combinatorial distances of the nodes. Inspired by this result, we perform a similar analysis for CTQWs both in closed and open systems, including time-dependent couplings. For time-reversal symmetric coherent quant…
In the right conditions, removing one particle from a multipartite bound state can make it fall apart. This feature, known as the "Borromean property", has been recently demonstrated experimentally in Efimov states. One could expect that such peculiar behavior should be linked with the presence of strong inter-particle correlations. However, any exploration of this connection is hindered by the complexity of the physical systems exhibiting the Borromean property. To overcome this problem, we introduce a simple dynamical toy model based on a discrete-time quantum walk of many interacting partic…

We calculate the hybrid entanglement entropy between coin and walker degrees of freedom in a non-unitary quantum walk. The model possesses a joint parity and time-reversal symmetry or PT-symmetry and supports topological phases when this symmetry is unbroken by its eigenstates. An asymptotic analysis at long times reveals that the quantum walk can indefinitely sustain hybrid entanglement in the unbroken symmetry phase even when gain and loss mechanisms are present. However, when the gain-loss strength is too large, the PT-symmetry of the model is spontaneously broken and entanglement vanishes.…
We introduce a family of quantum walks on cycles parametrized by their liveliness, defined by the ability to execute a long-range move. We investigate the behaviour of the probability distribution and time-averaged probability distribution. We show that the liveliness parameter, controlling the magnitude of the additional long-range move, has a direct impact on the periodicity of the limiting distribution. We also show that the introduced model provides a method for network exploration which is robust against trapping.
Graph representations are a powerful concept for solving complex problems across natural science, as patterns of connectivity can give rise to a multitude of emergent phenomena. Graph-based approaches have proven particularly fruitful in quantum communication and quantum search algorithms in highly branched quantum networks. Here we introduce a new paradigm for the direct experimental realization of excitation dynamics associated with three-dimensional networks by exploiting the hybrid action of spatial and polarization degrees of freedom of photon pairs in complex waveguide circuits with tail…

Topological phases and the associated multiple edge states are studied for parity and time-reversal $(\mathcal{PT})$ symmetric non-Hermitian open quantum systems by constructing a non-unitary three-step quantum walk retaining $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry in one dimension. We show that the non-unitary quantum walk has large topological numbers of the $\mathbb{Z}$ topological phase and numerically confirm that multiple edge states appear as expected from the bulk-edge correspondence. Therefore, the bulk-edge correspondence is valid in this case. Moreover, we study the stability of the multiple edge s…
