The countless applications of ultrashort laser pulses in very different scientific areas explain the ongoing efforts to develop new strategies for the generation of light pulses with increasingly better characteristics. In this work, we theoretically study the application of the nonlinear reverse propagation method to produce few-cycle pulses with clean temporal profiles from standard post-compression setups based in hollow capillary fibers. By numerically solving the propagation of a desired goal pulse in the backward direction, we are able to predict the structure of the ideal input pulse that could be perfectly compressed in a given setup. Although the goal pulse cannot be chosen in a simple manner due to the fundamental symmetries of the nonlinear propagation equation, our analysis shows that the ideal pulse presents a recurring form and that, in general, both its intensity profile and phase must be shaped to recover the optimized goal output.
We demonstrate high-energy resonant dispersive-wave emission in the deep ultraviolet (218 to 375 nm) from optical solitons in short (15 to 34cm) hollow capillary fibres. This down-scaling in length compared to previous results in capillaries is achieved by using small core diameters (100 and 150 $μ$m) and pumping with 6.3 fs pulses at 800 nm. We generate pulses with energies of 4 to 6 $μ$J across the deep ultraviolet in a 100 $μ$m capillary and up to 11 $μ$J in a 150 $μ$m capillary. From comparisons to simulations we estimate the ultraviolet pulse to be 2 to 2.5 fs in duration. We also numeric…
We demonstrate an efficient scheme for the generation of broadband, high-energy, circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses in the deep ultraviolet through seeded degenerate four-wave mixing in stretched gas-filled hollow capillary fibers. Pumping and seeding with circularly polarized 35 fs pulses centered at 400 nm and 800 nm, respectively, we generate idler pulses centered at 266 nm with more than 25 microjoule of energy and over 95% spectrally averaged ellipticity. Even higher idler energies and broad spectra (27 nm bandwidth) can be obtained at the cost of reduced ellipticity. Our syste…
We investigate soliton self-compression and ultraviolet resonant dispersive wave emission in the higher-order modes of a gas-filled hollow capillary fibre. Our simple analytical scaling rules predict shorter required waveguides and different energy scales when moving from the fundamental to higher-order modes. Experimentally, we demonstrate soliton self-compression and ultraviolet dispersive wave emission in the double-lobe LP$_{11}$ mode of an argon-filled hollow capillary fibre, which we excite by coupling into the fibre at oblique incidence. We observe the generation of ultraviolet dispersi…
Resonant dispersive wave (RDW) emission in gas-filled hollow waveguides is a powerful technique for the generation of bright few-femtosecond laser pulses from the vacuum ultraviolet to the near infrared. Here we investigate deep-ultraviolet RDW emission in a hollow capillary fibre filled with a longitudinal gas pressure gradient. We obtain broadly similar emission to the constant-pressure case by applying a surprisingly simple scaling rule for the gas pressure and study the energy-dependent dispersive-wave spectrum in detail using simulations. We further find that in addition to enabling dispe…
Optical soliton dynamics can cause the extreme alteration of the temporal and spectral shape of a propagating light pulse. They occur at up to kilowatt peak powers in glass-core optical fibres and the gigawatt level in gas-filled microstructured hollow-core fibres. Here we demonstrate optical soliton dynamics in large-core hollow capillary fibres. This enables scaling of soliton effects by several orders of magnitude to the multi-mJ energy and terawatt peak power level. We experimentally demonstrate two key soliton effects. First, we observe self-compression to sub-cycle pulses and infer the c…
High-energy ultraviolet pulse generation in gas-filled hollow capillary fibers (HCFs) through dispersive-wave-emission process, has attracted considerable attentions in recent several years due to its great application potentials in ultraviolet spectroscopy and photochemistry. While the ability of this technique to deliver high-energy, ultrafast ultraviolet pulses is widely recognized, few-fs duration of μJ-level dispersive-wave (DW) pulses has, however, escaped direct measurements. In this letter, we demonstrate that using several chirped mirrors, few-fs ultraviolet DW pulses can be obtained …
We report the direct observation of periodic intensity modulation of a laser pulse propagating in a hollow core waveguide. A series of equally spaced plasma sparks along the gas-filled capillary is produced. This effect can be explained by the beating of different fiber modes, which are excited by controlling the size of the focal spot at the capillary entrance. As compared to an artificial modulated waveguide structure, our presented approach represents an easier and more flexible quasi-phase-matching scheme for nonlinear-optical frequency conversion.
We report on hollow-core fibers displaying rms core roughness under the surface capillary waves thermodynamic limit and record loss in the short-wavelength range (50.0 dB/km at 290 nm, 9.7 dB/km at 369 nm, 5.0 dB/km at 480 nm, 0.9 dB/km at 558 nm, 1.8 dB/km at 719 nm).
We investigate various methods for extending the simple analytical capillary model to describe the dispersion and loss of anti-resonant hollow-core fibers without the need of detailed finite-element simulations across the desired wavelength range. This poor-man's model can with a single fitting parameter quite accurately mimic dispersion and loss resonances and anti-resonances from full finite-element simulations. Due to the analytical basis of the model it is easy to explore variations in core size and cladding wall thickness, and should therefore provide a valuable tool for numerical simulat…
We demonstrate efficient generation of coherent super-octave pulses via a single-stage spectral broadening of a Yb:KGW laser in a single, pressurized, Ne-filled, hollow-core fiber capillary. Emerging pulses spectrally spanning over more than $\sim$1 PHz (250 nm- 1600 nm) at a dynamic range of $\sim$60 dB, and an excellent beam quality open the door to combining Yb:KGW lasers with modern light field synthesis techniques. Compression of a fraction of the generated supercontinuum to intense (8 fs, $\sim$2.4 cycle, $\sim$650 $μ$J) pulses allows convenient use of these novel laser sources in strong…
We numerically investigate the energy and arrival-time noise of ultrashort laser pulses produced via resonant dispersive wave emission in gas-filled hollow-core waveguides under the influence of pump-laser instability. We find that for low pump energy, fluctuations in the pump energy are strongly amplified. However, when the generation process is saturated, the energy of the resonant dispersive wave can be significantly less noisy than that of the pump pulse. This holds for a variety of generation conditions and while still producing few-femtosecond pulses. We further find that the arrival-tim…
Optimum suppression of higher order modes in single-ring hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (SR-PCFs) occurs when the capillary-to-core diameter ratio d/D = 0.68. Here we report that, in SR-PCFs with sub-optimal values of d/D, higher-order mode suppression can be recovered by spinning the preform during fiber drawing, thus introducing a continuous helical twist. This geometrically increases the effective axial propagation constant (initially too low) of the LP01-like modes of the capillaries surrounding the core, enabling robust single-mode operation. The effect is explored by means of extens…
We introduce a new simple design of hollow-core microstructured fiber targeted to guide mid-infrared light at a wavelength 2.94 $ μ$m. The fiber has a triangular-core supported via silica-glass webs enclosed by a large hollow capillary tube. The fiber specific dimensions are determined based on the guiding technique, which is based on the anti-resonant mechanism. For a triangular-core with side length $100$ $ μ$m, the fiber has a minimum transmission loss $0.08\pm0.005$ dB/m and dispersion 2.3 ps/km/nm at the operational wavelength 2.94 $ μ$m.
We report a silica glass nested capillary anti-resonant nodeless fiber with transmission and low bending sensitivity in the mid-infrared around 4000 nm. The fiber is characterized in terms of transmission over 1700-4200 nm wavelengths, revealing a mid-infrared 3500-4200 nm transmission window, clearly observable for a 12 m long fiber. Bending loss around 4000 nm is 0.5 dB/m measured over 3 full turns with 40 mm radius, going up to 5 dB/m for full turns with 15 mm radius. Our results provide experimental evidence of hollow-core silica fibers in which nested, anti-resonant capillaries provide hi…
Optical properties of hollow-core revolver fibers are numerically investigated depending on various parameters: the hollow-core diameter, the capillary wall thickness, the values of the minimum gap between the capillaries, the number of capillaries in the cladding and the type of glass (silica and chalcogenide). Preliminary, similar calculations are made for simple models of hollow-core fibers. Based on the obtained results, the optimal design of the revolver fiber for Raman laser frequency conversion (1560 nm to 4420 nm in H2) was determined. As a result, efficient ns-pulsed 4420 nm Raman las…

Infrared femtosecond laser pulses are important tools both in strong-field physics, driving X-ray high-harmonic generation, and as the basis for widely tuneable, if inefficient, ultrafast sources in the visible and ultraviolet. Although anomalous material dispersion simplifies compression to few-cycle pulses, attosecond pulses in the infrared have remained out of reach. We demonstrate soliton self-compression of 1800 nm laser pulses in hollow capillary fibers to sub-cycle envelope duration (2 fs) with 27 GW peak power, corresponding to attosecond field transients. In the same system, we genera…
