We generate a tabletop pulsed relativistic electron beam at 100 Hz repetition rate from vacuum laser acceleration (VLA) by tightly focusing a radially polarized beam into a low-density gas. We demonstrate that strong longitudinal electric fields at the focus can accelerate electrons up to 1.43 MeV by using only 98 GW of peak laser power. The electron energy is measured as a function of laser intensity and gas species, revealing a strong dependence on the atomic ionization dynamics. These experimental results are supported by numerical simulations of particle dynamics in a tightly focused configuration that take ionization into consideration. For the range of intensities considered, it is demonstrated that atoms with higher atomic numbers like krypton can optimally inject electrons at the peak of the laser field, resulting in higher energies and an efficient acceleration mechanism that reaches a significant fraction of the theoretical energy gain limit.
Fully analytic expressions, for the electric and magnetic fields of an ultrashort and tightly focused laser pulse of the radially polarized category, are presented to lowest order of approximation. The fields are derived from scalar and vector potentials, along the lines of our earlier work for a similar pulse of the linearly polarized variety. A systematic program is also described from which the fields may be obtained to any desired accuracy, analytically or numerically.
A high index dielectric nano-sphere can be excited and yet remain radiationless. A method to excite the non-radiating anapole mode of a high index isotropic dielectric nanosphere is presented. With tightly focused radially polarized beam illumination, the main-contributing electric dipole mode and magnetic modes can be zero with only a weak electric quadruple contributing to the total scattering. Further, with a standing wave illumination formed by two counter-propagating focused radially polarized beam under $4π$ configuration, the ideal radiationless ananpole can be excited.
Analytic expressions for the fields of a radially polarized, ultrashort and tightly focused laser pulse propagating in a linear-response plasma are derived and discussed. The fields are obtained from solving the inhomogenous wave equations for the vector and scalar potentials, linked by the Lorenz gauge, in a plasma background. First the scalar potential is eliminated using the gauge condition, then the vector potential is synthesized from Fourier components of an initial uniform distribution of wavenumbers, and the inverse Fourier transformation is carried out term-by-term in a truncated seri…
Tightly-focused, ultrashort radially-polarized laser beams have a large longitudinal field, which provides a strong motivation for direct particle acceleration and manipulation in vacuum. The broadband nature of these beams means that chromatic properties of propagation and focusing are important to consider. We show via single particle simulations that using the correct frequency-dependent beam parameters is imperative, especially as the pulse duration decreases to the few-cycle regime. The results with different spatio-spectral amplitude profiles show both a drastic increase or decrease of t…
The focal field properties of radially/azimuthally polarized Zernike polynomials are studied. A method to design the pupil field in order to shape the focal field of radially or azimuthally polarized phase vortex is introduced. With this method, we are able to obtain a pupil field to achieve a longitudinally polarized hollow spot with a depth of focus up to $12λ$ and $0.14λ$ lateral resolution for a optical system with numerical aperture 0.99; A pupil field to generate 8 circularly polarized focal spots along the optical axis is also obtained with this method.
We report with single particle simulations that longitudinal chromatism, a commonly occuring spatio-temporal coupling in ultrashort laser pulses, can have a significant influence in the longitudinal acceleration of electrons via high-power, tightly-focused radially polarized laser beams. This effect can be advantageous, and even more-so when combined with small values of temporal chirp. However, the effect can also be highly destructive when the magnitude and sign of the longitudinal chromatism is not ideal, even at very small magnitudes. This motivates the characterization and understanding o…
We study the effect of focusing of the radially and azimuthally polarized vector beams on the spin angular momentum (SAM) density and Poynting vector of scattered waves from a Mie particle. Remarkably, the study reveals that the SAM density of the scattered field is solely transverse in nature for radially and azimuthally polarized incident vector beams; however the Poynting vector shows usual longitudinal character. We also demonstrate that the transverse SAM density can further be tuned with wavelength and focusing of the incident beam by exploiting the interference of different scattering m…
We demonstrate a convenient approach for simultaneously manipulating the amplitude and polarization of light beams by means of the modulation of the correlation structure. As an illustration, we constructed a periodic correlation structure that can generate an arbitrary radially polarized array (RPA) beam of a radial or rectangular symmetry array in the focal plane from a radially polarized (RP) beam. The physical realizability conditions for such source and the far-field beam condition are derived. It is illustrated that the beamlet shape and the state of polarization (SOP) can be effectively…
We analyze the propagation dynamics of radially polarized symmetric Airy beams (R-SABs) in a (2+1)-dimensional optical system with fractional diffraction, modeled by the fractional Schrödinger equation (FSE) characterized by the Lévy index. The autofocusing effect featured by such beams becomes stronger, while the focal length becomes shorter, with the increase of . The effect of the intrinsic vorticity on the autofocusing dynamics of the beams is considered too. Then, the ability of R-SABs to capture nano-particles by means of radiation forces is explored, and multiple capture positions emerg…
Cylindrical vector vortex (CVV) beams, complex light fields that exhibit a vector nature and carry quantized orbital angular momentum states, have been widely investigated due to their rich applications. Current technologies to generate CVV beams using individual polarization and spatial phase manipulations suffer from bulky size and low configurability. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach to generate CVV beams with an integrated device based on silicon nitride microring resonator and embedded top-gratings. The device is capable of generating broad-band radially…
The rich optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMD-MLs) render these materials promising candidates for the design of new optoelectronic devices. Despite the large number of excitonic complexes in TMD-MLs, the main focus has been put on optically bright neutral excitons. Spin-forbidden dark excitonic complexes have been addressed for basic science purposes, but not for applications. We report on spin-forbidden dark excitonic complexes in ML WSe$_2$ as an ideal system for the facile generation of radially polarized light beams. Furthermore, the spatially resolved pol…
We report on the morphological effects induced by the inhomogeneous absorption of cylindrically polarized femtosecond laser irradiation of silver (Ag) in sub-ablation conditions. A theoretical prediction of the role of surface plasmon excitation in the production of self-formed periodic ripples structures is evaluated. Furthermore, a combined hydrodynamical and thermoelastic model is presented to account for the influence of temperature-related lattice movements in laser beam conditions that are sufficient to produce material melting. The ability to control the size of the morphological change…
We propose an approach to actively tune the scattering pattern of a Mie-type spherical antenna. The scheme is based on separate control over the induced electric dipole and induced magnetic dipole using two coherent focused beams of radial polarization and azimuthal polarization. By carefully tuning the amplitude and phase relation of the two beams, a broadband unidirectional scattering can be achieved, even at the wavelength where the antenna scatters most efficiently. By moving the focus of one beam, a drastic switch of the unidirectional scattering can be observed. Such scheme enables the d…
We experimentally measured the self-healing of the spatially inhomogeneous states of polarization of radial and azimuthal polarized vector Bessel beams. Radial and azimuthal polarized vector Bessel beams were generated via a digital version of Durnin's method, using a spatial light modulator in concert with a liquid crystal $q$-plate. As a proof of principle, their intensities and spatially inhomogeneous states of polarization were measured using Stokes polarimetry as they propagated through two disparate obstructions. It was found, similar to their intensities, the spatially inhomogeneous sta…
Vector vortex beams are a class of optical beams with singularities in their space-variant polarization. Vector vortex beam lasers have applications in many areas including imaging and communication, where vertical-cavity lasers emitting Gaussian beams have been most widely used so far. Generation of vector vortex beams from vertical-cavity lasers has required external control or modulation. Here, by utilizing a polarization-selective subwavelength grating as one of the reflectors in a vertical semiconductor microcavity, we design the spin textures of the polariton mode and demonstrate polarit…
We present a detailed study of the fields and propagation characteristics around the focus of ultrashort radially-polarized laser beams (RPLBs) having low-order spatio-temporal couplings (STCs). The three STCs considered are the focusing of the different frequencies to different positions along the longitudinal coordinate, the focusing of the frequencies to different positions along one transverse coordinate, and the beam waist or Rayleigh range having a power-law frequency dependence. The STCs considered are deemed low-order because they are generally linear in frequency. The combination of a…
Key advances in the generation and shaping of spatially structured photonic fields both in the near and far field render possible the control of the duration, the phase, and the polarization state of the field distributions. For instance, optical vortices having a structured phase are nowadays routinely generated and exploited for a range of applications. While the light-matter interaction with optical vortices is meanwhile well studied, the distinctive features of the interaction of quantum matter with vector beams, meaning fields with spatially inhomogeneous polarization states, are still to…
Free electrons moving in an optical standing wave field feel the ponderomotive potential, acting as a refractive-index medium in electron optics. Emerging technologies involving this potential have been proposed and realized in electron microscopy, such as electron phase-contrast imaging using a laser standing wave in an optical enhancement cavity. However, the interaction between electrons with a cylindrically distributed optical field has not been investigated although its suitability for electron-optical imaging systems. In this study, we theoretically show that the divergence and convergen…
Spin-orbital coupling and interaction as intrinsic light fields characteristics have been extensively studied. Previous studies involve the spin angular momentum (SAM) carried by circular polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM) associated with a spiral phase wavefront within the beam cross section, where both the SAM and OAM are in parallel with the propagation direction. In this work, we study a new type of spin-orbital coupling between the longitudinal SAM and the transverse OAM carried by a spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) wavepacket under tight focusing condition. Intricate spa…
The spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of light generated by tight focusing in optical tweezers has been regularly employed in generating angular momentum - both spin and orbital - in trapped mesoscopic particles. Specifically, the transverse spin angular momentum (TSAM), which arises due to the longitudinal component of the electromagnetic field generated by tight focusing, is of special interest, both in terms of fundamental studies and associated applications. We provide an effective and optimal strategy for generating TSAM in optical tweezers by tightly focusing radially and azimuthally polarize…
We present an inline optical device consisting of four optical components that produce a laser field consisting of two sub-beams where one is radially polarized and the other is linearly polarized. In the focus, the radially polarized sub-beam produces longitudinal polarization while the linearly polarized sub-beam produces polarization perpendicular to the propagation direction. By rotating the optical components, the orientation of the resulting electric field in the focus can be continuously varied in any direction. Estimates of the angular resolution of the device are given in the paraxial…

The knife-edge method is an established technique for profiling of even tightly focused light beams. However the straightforward implementation of this method fails if the materials and geometry of the knife-edges are not chosen carefully or in particular if knife-edges are used that are made of pure materials. In these cases artifacts are introduced in the shape and position of the reconstructed beam profile due to the interaction of the light beam under study with the knife. Hence, corrections to the standard knife-edge evaluation method are required. Here we investigate the knife-edge metho…
We extend the concept of radially and azimuthally polarized optical beams to the polychromatic domain by introducing cylindrically polarized nondiffracting optical pulses. In particular, we discuss in detail the case of cylindrically polarized X-waves, both in the paraxial and nonparaxial regime. The explicit expressions for the electric and magnetic fields of cylindrically polarized X-waves is also reported.

Spin-orbit interaction (SOI) have provided a new viable roadmap for the development of spin-based photonics devices. However, existing strategies to control the SOI focus commonly on tailoring the spatial dimension of light fields yet neglecting the inherent temporal one. Herein, we first present ultrafast temporal effects on both spin-to-orbit and orbit-to-local-spin conversions based on the time-assistant vectorial diffractive theory and the fast Fourier transformation. Such interconversions depend upon whether the incident hybridly vectorial light pulse carries vortex phase or not in a sing…
Spatiotemporal optical vortices (STOVs) carrying transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) are of rapidly growing interest for the field of optics due to the new degree of freedom that can be exploited. In this paper, we propose cylindrical vector two dimensional STOVs (2D-STOVs) containing two orthogonal transverse OAMs in both x-t and y-t planes for the first time, and investigate the tightly focusing of such fields using the Richards-Wolf vectorial diffraction theory. Highly confined spatiotemporal wavepackets with polarization structure akin to toroidal topology is generated, whose spatiot…
