We show that adaptive proximal gradient methods for convex problems are not restricted to traditional Lipschitzian assumptions. Our analysis reveals that a class of linesearch-free methods is still convergent under mere local Hölder gradient continuity, covering in particular continuously differentiable semi-algebraic functions. To mitigate the lack of local Lipschitz continuity, popular approaches revolve around $\varepsilon$-oracles and/or linesearch procedures. In contrast, we exploit plain Hölder inequalities not entailing any approximation, all while retaining the linesearch-free nature of adaptive schemes. Furthermore, we prove full sequence convergence without prior knowledge of local Hölder constants nor of the order of Hölder continuity. Numerical experiments make comparisons with baseline methods on diverse tasks from machine learning covering both the locally and the globally Hölder setting.
The parameters of a neural network are naturally organized in groups, some of which might not contribute to its overall performance. To prune out unimportant groups of parameters, we can include some non-differentiable penalty to the objective function, and minimize it using proximal gradient methods. In this paper, we derive the weighted proximal operator, which is a necessary component of these proximal methods, of two structured sparsity inducing penalties. Moreover, they can be approximated efficiently with a numerical solver, and despite this approximation, we prove that existing converge…
An adaptive proximal method for a special class of variational inequalities and related problems is proposed. For example, the so-called mixed variational inequalities and composite saddle problems are considered. Some estimates of the necessary number of iterations are obtained to achieve a given quality of the solution.
Many applications in machine learning or signal processing involve nonsmooth optimization problems. This nonsmoothness brings a low-dimensional structure to the optimal solutions. In this paper, we propose a randomized proximal gradient method harnessing this underlying structure. We introduce two key components: i) a random subspace proximal gradient algorithm; ii) an identification-based sampling of the subspaces. Their interplay brings a significant performance improvement on typical learning problems in terms of dimensions explored.
In this paper the degenerate preconditioned proximal point algorithm will be combined with the idea of varying preconditioners leading to the degenerate variable metric proximal point algorithm. The weak convergence of the resulting iteration will be proven. From the perspective of the degenerate variable metric proximal point algorithm, a version of the primal-dual Douglas-Rachford method with varying preconditioners will be derived and a proof of its weak convergence which is based on the previous results for the proximal point algorithm, is provided, too. After that, we derive a heuristic o…
A new adaptive approach is proposed for variational inequalities with a Lipschitz-continuous field. Estimates of the necessary number of iterations are obtained to achieve a given quality of the variational inequality solution. A generalization of the method under consideration to the case of a Holder-continuous field is considered.
This work presents an adaptive superfast proximal augmented Lagrangian (AS-PAL) method for solving linearly-constrained smooth nonconvex composite optimization problems. Each iteration of AS-PAL inexactly solves a possibly nonconvex proximal augmented Lagrangian (AL) subproblem obtained by an aggressive/adaptive choice of prox stepsize with the aim of substantially improving its computational performance followed by a full Lagrangian multiplier update. A major advantage of AS-PAL compared to other AL methods is that it requires no knowledge of parameters (e.g., size of constraint matrix, objec…
In this paper we introduce the discontinuous universal feedback for the problem of Nash equilibrium in two person non-zero sum differential game. We assume that there exist functions satisfying some conditions analogous to the infinitesimal conditions on value function in zero sum differential games. Under this assumption we prove the existence of universal feedback Nash equilibrium.
We investigate the proximal point algorithm (PPA) and its inexact extensions under an error bound condition, which guarantees a global linear convergence if the proximal regularization parameter is larger than the error bound condition parameter. We propose an adaptive generalized proximal point algorithm (AGPPA), which adaptively updates the proximal regularization parameters based on some implementable criteria. We show that AGPPA achieves linear convergence without any knowledge of the error bound condition parameter, and the rate only differs from the optimal one by a logarithm term. We ap…
This paper proposes an efficient adaptive variant of a quadratic penalty accelerated inexact proximal point (QP-AIPP) method proposed earlier by the authors. Both the QP-AIPP method and its variant solve linearly set constrained nonconvex composite optimization problems using a quadratic penalty approach where the generated penalized subproblems are solved by a variant of the underlying AIPP method. The variant, in turn, solves a given penalized subproblem by generating a sequence of proximal subproblems which are then solved by an accelerated composite gradient algorithm. The main difference …

In this paper we propose an adaptively extrapolated proximal gradient method, which is based on the accelerated proximal gradient method (also known as FISTA), however we locally optimize the extrapolation parameter by carrying out an exact (or inexact) line search. It turns out that in some situations, the proposed algorithm is equivalent to a class of SR1 (identity minus rank 1) proximal quasi-Newton methods. Convergence is proved in a general non-convex setting, and hence, as a byproduct, we also obtain new convergence guarantees for proximal quasi-Newton methods. The efficiency of the new …
We implement the adaptive step size scheme from the optimization methods AdaGrad and Adam in a novel variant of the Proximal Gradient Method (PGM). Our algorithm, dubbed AdaProx, avoids the need for explicit computation of the Lipschitz constants or additional line searches and thus reduces per-iteration cost. In test cases for Constrained Matrix Factorization we demonstrate the advantages of AdaProx in fidelity and performance over PGM, while still allowing for arbitrary penalty functions. The python implementation of the algorithm presented here is available as an open-source package at http…

This paper presents a proximal bundle (PB) framework based on a generic bundle update scheme for solving the hybrid convex composite optimization (HCCO) problem and establishes a common iteration-complexity bound for any variant belonging to it. As a consequence, iteration-complexity bounds for three PB variants based on different bundle update schemes are obtained in the HCCO context for the first time and in a unified manner. While two of the PB variants are universal (i.e., their implementations do not require parameters associated with the HCCO instance), the other newly (as far as the aut…

Nonconvex optimization problems arise in different research fields and arouse lots of attention in signal processing, statistics and machine learning. In this work, we explore the accelerated proximal gradient method and some of its variants which have been shown to converge under nonconvex context recently. We show that a novel variant proposed here, which exploits adaptive momentum and block coordinate update with specific update rules, further improves the performance of a broad class of nonconvex problems. In applications to sparse linear regression with regularizations like Lasso, grouped…

We study the training of regularized neural networks where the regularizer can be non-smooth and non-convex. We propose a unified framework for stochastic proximal gradient descent, which we term ProxGen, that allows for arbitrary positive preconditioners and lower semi-continuous regularizers. Our framework encompasses standard stochastic proximal gradient methods without preconditioners as special cases, which have been extensively studied in various settings. Not only that, we present two important update rules beyond the well-known standard methods as a byproduct of our approach: (i) the f…
Composite optimization offers a powerful modeling tool for a variety of applications and is often numerically solved by means of proximal gradient methods. In this paper, we consider fully nonconvex composite problems under only local Lipschitz gradient continuity for the smooth part of the objective function. We investigate an adaptive scheme for PANOC-type methods (Stella et al. in Proceedings of the IEEE 56th CDC, 1939--1944, 2017), namely accelerated linesearch algorithms requiring only the simple oracle of proximal gradient. While including the classical proximal gradient method, our theo…
We introduce a generic scheme for accelerating first-order optimization methods in the sense of Nesterov, which builds upon a new analysis of the accelerated proximal point algorithm. Our approach consists of minimizing a convex objective by approximately solving a sequence of well-chosen auxiliary problems, leading to faster convergence. This strategy applies to a large class of algorithms, including gradient descent, block coordinate descent, SAG, SAGA, SDCA, SVRG, Finito/MISO, and their proximal variants. For all of these methods, we provide acceleration and explicit support for non-strongl…
Proximal methods are known to identify the underlying substructure of nonsmooth optimization problems. Even more, in many interesting situations, the output of a proximity operator comes with its structure at no additional cost, and convergence is improved once it matches the structure of a minimizer. However, it is impossible in general to know whether the current structure is final or not; such highly valuable information has to be exploited adaptively. To do so, we place ourselves in the case where a proximal gradient method can identify manifolds of differentiability of the nonsmooth objec…

We consider the proximal-gradient method for minimizing an objective function that is the sum of a smooth function and a non-smooth convex function. A feature that distinguishes our work from most in the literature is that we assume that the associated proximal operator does not admit a closed-form solution. To address this challenge, we study two adaptive and implementable termination conditions that dictate how accurately the proximal-gradient subproblem is solved. We prove that the number of iterations required for the inexact proximal-gradient method to reach a $τ> 0$ approximate first-ord…

Variable metric proximal gradient (VM-PG) is a widely used class of convex optimization method. Lately, there has been a lot of research on the theoretical guarantees of VM-PG with different metric selections. However, most such metric selections are dependent on (an expensive) Hessian, or limited to scalar stepsizes like the Barzilai-Borwein (BB) stepsize with lots of safeguarding. Instead, in this paper we propose an adaptive metric selection strategy called the diagonal Barzilai-Borwein (BB) stepsize. The proposed diagonal selection better captures the local geometry of the problem while ke…
