We report striking Doppler velocity gradients observed during the well-observed September 10th 2017 solar flare, and argue that they are consistent with the presence of an above-the-looptop termination shock beneath the flare current sheet. Observations from the Hinode Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) measure plasma sheet Doppler shifts up to 35 km/s during the late-phase of the event. By comparing these line-of-sight flows with plane-of-sky measurements, we calculate total velocity downflows of 200+ km/s, orientated 6-10° out of the plane of sky. The observed velocities drop rapidly at the base of the hot plasma sheet seen in extreme ultraviolet, consistent with simulated velocity profiles predicted by our 2.5D magnetohydrodynamics model that features a termination shock at the same location. Finally, the striking velocity deceleration aligns spatially with the suppression of Fe XXIV non-thermal velocities, and a 35--50 keV hard X-ray looptop source observed by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). Together, these observations are consistent with the presence of a possible termination shock within the X8.2-class solar flare.
We present constraints on the structure of the chromosphere from observations of the Ca II H line profile near and off the solar limb. We obtained a data set of the Ca II H line in a field of view extending 20" across the limb. We analyzed the spectra for the properties of off-limb spectra. We used tracers of the Doppler shifts, such as the location of the absorption core, the ratio of the two emission peaks H2V and H2R, and intensity images at a fixed wavelength. The average off-limb profiles show a smooth variation with increasing limb distance. The line width increases up to a height of abo…
Studying Doppler shifts provides deeper insights into the flow of mass and energy in the solar atmosphere. We perform a comprehensive measurement of Doppler shifts in the transition region and its center-to-limb variation (CLV) in the strong field regions ($|\textbf{B}| \geq$ 50 G) of 50 active regions (ARs), using the \ion{Si}{4} 1394~Å line recorded by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer(IRIS). To locate the ARs and identify strong field regions, we have used the magnetograms obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). We find that in strong field regions, on average, all t…

本研究利用Hinode卫星数据分析了太阳临边附近Fe I 630.15 nm谱线,发现颗粒对流导致朝向临边的红移增加,且颗粒谱线形成区域比颗粒间区域更厚。
We computed Doppler beaming factors for DA, DB, and DBA white dwarf models, as well as for main sequence and giant stars covering the transmission curves of the Sloan, UBVRI, HiPERCAM, Kepler, TESS, and Gaia photometric systems. The calculations of the limb-darkening coefficients for 3D models were carried out using the least-squares method for these photometric systems. The beaming factor calculations, which use realistic models of stellar atmospheres, show that the black body approximation is not accurate, particularly for the filters $u$, $u'$, $U$, $g$, $g'$, and $B$. The black body approa…
A comprehensive understanding of the structure of Doppler motions in transition region including the center-to-limb variation and its relationship with the magnetic field structure is vital for the understanding of mass and energy transfer in the solar atmosphere. In this paper, we have performed such a study in an active region using the Si IV 1394~Å emission line recorded by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and the line-of-sight photospheric magnetic field obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on-board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The active region h…
Granular convective motions reach into the lower solar atmosphere, typically causing photospheric spectral lines to exhibit a differential line shift. This Doppler shift to shorter wavelength is commonly known as convective blueshift. We performed systematic observations of the quiet Sun with the Laser Absolute Reference Spectrograph (LARS) at the German Vacuum Tower Telescope. The solar disk was scanned along the meridian and the equator, from the disk center toward the limb. The solar spectrum around 6173Å was calibrated with a laser frequency comb on an absolute wavelength scale with an acc…

To study motions and oscillations in the solar chromosphere and at the transition region (TR) level we analyze some extreme Doppler shifts observed off-limb with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Raster scans and slit-jaw imaging observations performed in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) channels were used. Large transverse oscillations are revealed by the far wings profiles after accurately removing the bulk average line profiles of each sequence. Different regions around the Sun are considered. Accordingly, the cool material of spicules is observed in Mg II lines rather dispersed u…

Convective motions in the solar atmosphere cause spectral lines to become asymmetric and shifted in wavelength. For photospheric lines, this differential Doppler shift varies from the solar disk center to the limb. Precise and comprehensive observations of the convective blueshift and its center-to-limb variation improve our understanding of the atmospheric hydrodynamics and ensuing line formation, and provide the basis to refine 3D models of the solar atmosphere. We performed systematical spectroscopic measurements of the convective blueshift of the quiet Sun with the Laser Absolute Reference…
We analyze the time series of oxygen line profiles (O vi 1031.93 A and O vi 1037.61 A obtained from SUMER/SOHO on the solar south limb. We calculated Doppler shifts and consequently Doppler velocities in three heights 4", 14", and 24" from the limb on a coronal hole region. Then, we performed wavelet analysis with Morlet wavelet transform to determine the periods of fundamental mode and its first harmonic mode. The calculated period ratios have departures from its canonical value of $2$. The density stratification and magnetic twist are two main factors which may cause these departures.
Broad-band images in the Ca II H line, from the BFI instrument on the Hinode spacecraft, show emission from spicules emerging from and visible right down to the observed limb. Surprisingly, little absorption of spicule light is seen along their lengths. We present formal solutions to the transfer equation for given (ad-hoc) source functions, including a stratified chromosphere from which spicules emanate. The model parameters are broadly compatible with earlier studies of spicules. The visibility of Ca II spicules down to the limb in Hinode data seems to require that spicule emission be Dopple…
Using numerical simulations of the magnetised solar photosphere carried out with the radiative magneto-hydrodynamic code, MURaM, and detailed spectro-polarimetric diagnostics of the simulated photospheric 6302A FeI line, spectro-polarimetric signatures of Alfven waves in magnetised intergranular lanes of the simulated solar photosphere were analysed at different positions at the solar disk. The torsional Alfven waves in the intergranular lanes are horizontal plasma motions, which do not have a thermal perturbation counterpart. We find signatures of Alfven waves as small-scale line profile Dopp…
Observations of chromospheric spectral lines near and beyond the solar limb provide information on the solar chromosphere without any photospheric contamination. For ground-based observations near and off the limb with real-time image correction by adaptive optics (AO), some technical requirements have to be met, such as an AO lock point that is independent of the location of the field of view observed by the science instruments, both for 1D and 2D instruments. We show how to obtain simultaneous AO-corrected spectra in Ca II H, Ha, Ca II IR at 854 nm, and He I at 1083 nm with the instrumentati…
We focus on detecting and studying quasi-periodic propagating features that have been interpreted both in terms of slow magneto-acoustic waves and of high speed upflows. We analyze long duration spectroscopic observations of the on-disk part of the south polar coronal hole taken on 1997 February 25 by the SUMER spectrometer aboard SOHO. We calibrated the velocity with respect to the off-limb region and obtain time--distance maps in intensity, Doppler velocity and line width. We also perform a cross correlation analysis on different time series curves at different latitudes. We study average sp…
Strongly Doppler-shifted Stokes $V$ profiles have been detected in the quiet Sun with the IMaX instrument on-board the SUNRISE stratospheric balloon-borne telescope. High velocities are required in order to produce such signals, hence these events have been interpreted as jets, although other sources are also possible. We aim to characterize the variation of the main properties of these events (occurrence rate, lifetime, size and velocities) with their position on the solar disk between disk centre and the solar limb. These events have been identified in Sunrise/IMaX data according to the same…
Waves have long been thought to contribute to the heating of the solar corona and the generation of the solar wind. Recent observations have demonstrated evidence of quasi-periodic longitudinal disturbances and ubiquitous transverse wave propagation in many different coronal environments. This paper investigates signatures of different types of oscillatory behaviour, both above the solar limb and on-disk, by comparing findings from the Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (CoMP) and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) for the same active region. We…
With an aim to examine whether the predicted solar gravitational redshift can be observationally confirmed under the influence of the convective Doppler shift due to granular motions, we attempted measuring the absolute spectral line-shifts on a large number of points over the solar disk based on an extensive set of 5188-5212A region spectra taken through an iodine-cell with the Solar Domeless Telescope at Hida Observatory. The resulting heliocentric line shifts at the meridian line (where no rotational shift exists), which were derived by finding the best-fit parameterized model spectrum with…
A statistical study has been carried out of the relationship between plasma flow Doppler velocities and magnetic field parameters during the emergence of active regions at the solar photospheric level with data acquired by the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). We have investigated 224 emerging active regions with different spatial scales and positions on the solar disc. The following relationships for the first hours of the emergence of active regions have been analysed: i) of peak negative Doppler velocities with the position of the emerging…
The published Mount Wilson Doppler-shift measurements of the solar velocity field taken in 1967--1982 are revisited with a more accurate model, which includes two terms representing the meridional flow and three terms corresponding to the convective limb shift. Integration of the recomputed data over the visible hemisphere reveals significant variability of the net radial velocity at characteristic time scales of 0.1--10 years, with a standard deviation of 1.4 \ms. This result is supported by independent published observations. The implications for exoplanet detection include reduced sensitivi…

The Helioseismic Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) records line-of-sight Dopplergram images of convective flows on the surface. These images are used to obtain the multi-scale convective spectrum. We design a pipeline to process the raw images to remove large-scale features like differential rotation, meridional circulation, limb shift and imaging artefacts. The Hierarchical Equal Area Pixelization scheme (HEALPix) is used to perform spherical harmonic transforms on the cleaned image. Because we only have access to line-of-sight velocities on half the solar sur…
Oscillations of coronal loops in the Sun have been reported in both imaging and spectral observations at the onset of flares. Images reveal transverse oscillations, whereas spectra detect line-of-sight velocity or Doppler-shift oscillations. The Doppler-shift oscillations are commonly interpreted as longitudinal modes. Our aim is to investigate the relationship between loop dynamics and flows seen in TRACE 195Åimages and Doppler shifts observed by SUMER in Si III 1113.2Åand Fe XIX 1118.1Åat the time of a C.8-class limb flare and an associated CME. We carefully co-aligned the sequence of TRACE …
On March 20, 2015, we obtained 159 spectra of the Sun as a star with the solar telescope and the FTS at the Institut für Astrophysik Göttingen, 76 spectra were taken during partial solar eclipse. We obtained RVs using $I_2$ as wavelength reference and determined the RM curve with a peak-to-peak amplitude of almost 1.4 km s$^{-1}$ at typical RV precision better than 1 m s$^{-1}$. We modeled disk-integrated solar RVs using surface velocities, limb darkening, and information about convective blueshift from 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. We confirm that convective blueshift is crucial to und…
We derive the non-thermal velocities (NTVs) in the transition region of an active region using the \ion{Si}{4}~1393.78~Å line observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and compare them with the line-of-sight photospheric magnetic fields obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The active region consists of two strong field regions with opposite polarity, separated by a weak field corridor, that widened as the active region evolved. The means of the NTV distributions in strong-field regions (weak field corridors) ran…
We investigated the off-limb spicules observed in the Mg II h and k lines by IRIS in a solar polar coronal hole. We analyzed the large dataset of obtained spectra to extract quantitative information about the line intensities, shifts, and widths. The observed Mg II line profiles are broad and double-peaked at lower altitudes, broad but flat-topped at middle altitudes, and narrow and single-peaked with the largest Doppler shifts at higher altitudes. We use 1D non-LTE vertical slab models (i.e. models which consider departures from Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium) in single-slab and multi-slab c…
Synthetic intensity maps are generated from a 3D kink-unstable flux rope simulation using several DKIST/DL-NIRSP spectral lines to make a prediction of the observational signatures of energy transport and release. The reconstructed large field-of-view intensity mosaics and single tile sit-and-stare high-cadence image sequences show detailed, fine-scale structure and exhibit signatures of wave propagation, redistribution of heat, flows and fine-scale bursts. These fine-scale bursts are present in the synthetic Doppler velocity maps and can be interpreted as evidence for small-scale magnetic rec…
The dynamics of horizontal plasma flows during the first hours of the emergence of active region magnetic flux in the solar photosphere have been analyzed using SOHO/MDI data. Four active regions emerging near the solar limb have been considered. It has been found that extended regions of Doppler velocities with different signs are formed in the first hours of the magnetic flux emergence in the horizontal velocity field. The flows observed are directly connected with the emerging magnetic flux; they form at the beginning of the emergence of active regions and are present for a few hours. The D…
Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON) instruments use resonant scattering spectrometers to make unresolved Doppler velocity observations of the Sun. Unresolved measurements are not homogenous across the solar disc and so the observed data do not represent a uniform average over the entire surface. The influence on the inhomogeneity of the solar rotation and limb darkening has been considered previously (Brookes et al. 1978a) and is well understood. Here we consider a further effect that originates from the instrumentation itself. The intensity of light observed from a particular region…

The coronal green line (Fe XIV 5303 A) profiles were obtained from Fabry-Perot interferometric observations of the solar corona during the total solar eclipse of 21 June 2001 from Lusaka, Zambia. The instrumental width is about 0.2 A and the spectral resolution is about 26000. About 300 line profiles were obtained within a radial range of 1.0-1.5 R\odot and position angle coverage of about 240\circ. The line profiles were fitted with single Gaussian and their intensity, Doppler velocity, and line width have been obtained. Also obtained are the centroids of the line profiles which give a measur…
Spicules are long, thin, highly dynamic features that jut out ubiquitously from the solar limb. They dominate the interface between the chromosphere and corona and may provide significant mass and energy to the corona. We use high-quality observations with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope to establish that so-called type II spicules are characterized by the simultaneous action of three different types of motion: 1. field-aligned flows of order 50-100 km/s, 2. swaying motions of order 15-20 km/s, and 3. torsional motions of order 25-30 km/s. The first two modes have been studied in detail before…
In this research, we investigate Explosive Events (EEs) in the off-limb solar atmosphere, with simultaneous observations from the Si IV, Mg II k, and slit-jaw images (SJI) of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), on 17 August 2014, and 19 February. IRIS data can be investigated to observe the motion of matter, fluctuations, energy absorption, and heat transition of the solar atmosphere. Mechanisms responsible for solar large-scale structures, such as flares and coronal mass ejections, might originate from these small scale energetic events. Therefore, the study of these events can …

Spectroscopic Observations of the Solar Corona during the 2017 August 21 Total Solar Eclipse: Comparison of Spectral Line Widths and Doppler Shifts Between Open and Closed Magnetic Structures
Some of local sources of the slow solar wind can be associated with spectroscopically detected plasma outflows at edges of active regions accompanied with specific signatures in the inner corona. The EUV telescopes (e.g. SPIRIT/CORONAS-F, TESIS/CORONAS-Photon and SWAP/PROBA2) sometimes observed extended ray-like structures seen at the limb above active regions in 1MK iron emission lines and described as "coronal rays". To verify the relationship between coronal rays and plasma outflows, we analyze an isolated active region (AR) adjacent to small coronal hole (CH) observed by different EUV inst…
Multiwavelength Campaign Observations of a Young Solar-type Star, EK Draconis. II. Understanding Prominence Eruption through Data-Driven Modeling and Observed Magnetic Environment
Total eclipses permit a deep analysis of both the inner and the outer parts of the corona using the continuum White-Light (W-L) radiations from electrons (K-corona), the superposed spectrum of forbidden emission lines from ions (E-corona) and the dust component with F-lines (F-corona). By sufficiently dispersing the W-L spectrum, the Fraunhofer (F) spectrum of the dust component of the corona appears and the continuum Thomson radiation can be evaluated. The superposed emission lines of ions with different degrees of ionization are studied to allow the measurement of temperatures, non-thermal v…
The term `solar tornadoes' has been used to describe apparently rotating magnetic structures above the solar limb, as seen in high resolution images and movies from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). These often form part of the larger magnetic structure of a prominence, however the links between them remain unclear. Here we present plasma diagnostics on a tornado-like structure and its surroundings, seen above the limb by the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) aboard the Hinode satellite. We aim to extend our view of the velocity pa…
We present the results of a statistical analysis of the Doppler shifts and the asymmetry parameters of V profiles of the Fe I 630.25 nm line produced by 2D MHD simulations of solar granulation. The realism of the simulations tested using the magnetic ratio of Fe I 524.71 and 525.02 nm lines. The Stokes spectra were synthesized in snapshots with a mixed polarity field having a mean magnetic flux density of 0.2 mT and mean unsigned field strength of 35 mT. We found that downflows with a velocity of 0.5 km/s predominate, on the average, in areas with some network magnetic elements at the disk cen…
This short review paper gives an overview of recently observed transverse, propagating velocity perturbations in coronal loops. These ubiquitous perturbations are observed to undergo strong damping as they propagate. Using 3D numerical simulations of footpoint-driven transverse waves propagating in a coronal plasma with a cylindrical density structure, in combination with analytical modelling, it is demonstrated that the observed velocity perturbations can be understood in terms of coupling of different wave modes in the inhomogeneous boundaries of the loops. Mode coupling in the inhomogeneous…
We perform a time-dependent ionization analysis to constrain plasma heating requirements during a fast partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME) observed on 2000 June 28 by the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). We use two methods to derive densities from the UVCS measurements, including a density sensitive O V line ratio at 1213.85 and 1218.35 Angstroms, and radiative pumping of the O VI 1032,1038 doublet by chromospheric emission lines. The most strongly constrained feature shows cumulative plasma heating comparable to or greater …
There are relatively few observations of UV emission during the impulsive phases of solar flares, so the nature of that emission is poorly known. Photons produced by solar flares can resonantly scatter off atoms and ions in the corona. Based on off-limb measurements by SOHO/UVCS, we derive the O VI $λ$1032 luminosities for 29 flares during the impulsive phase and the Ly$α$ luminosities of 5 flares, and we compare them with X-ray luminosities from GOES measurements. The upper transition region and lower transition region luminosities of the events observed are comparable. They are also comparab…
EK Draconis (HD 129333: G1.5 V) is a well-known young (50 Myr) solar analog. In 2012, Hubble Space Telescope returned to EK Dra to follow up a far-ultraviolet (FUV) SNAPshot visit by Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) two years earlier. The brief SNAP pointing had found surprisingly redshifted, impulsively variable subcoronal "hot-line" emission of Si IV 140 nm (T~ 80,000 K). Serendipitously, the 2012 follow-on program witnessed one of the largest FUV flares ever recorded on a sunlike star, which again displayed strong redshifts (downflows) of 30-40 km/s, even after compensating for small syste…
Surges have regularly been observed mostly in H$_α$ 6563~Å and Ca~{\sc ii} 8542~Å. However, surge$'$s response to other prominent lines of the interface-region (Mg~{\sc ii} k 2796.35~Å $\&$ h 2803.52~Å, O~{\sc iv} 1401.15~Å, Si~{\sc iv} 1402.77~Å) is not well studied. Here, the evolution and kinematics of six homologous surges are analysed using IRIS and AIA observations. These surges were observed on 7$^{th}$ July 2014, located very close to the limb. DEM analysis is performed on these surges where the co-existence of cool (log T/K = 6.35) and relatively hot (log T/K = 6.95) components have b…
The measurement of Doppler velocities in spectroscopic solar observations requires a reference for the local frame of rest. The rotational and radial velocities of the Earth and the rotation of the Sun introduce velocity offsets in the observations. Normally, good references for velocities are missing (e.g. telluric lines), especially in filter-based spectropolarimetric observations. We determine an absolute reference for line-of-sight velocities measured from solar observations for any heliocentric angle, calibrating the convective line shift of spatially-averaged profiles on quiet sun from a…
