We study inclusive double-Higgs boson production at the LHC and at the HL-LHC including variations of the trilinear and of the quartic Higgs boson self-couplings at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD with full top quark mass dependence. Our results include the two-loop contributions to the $gg \rightarrow HH$ amplitudes that involve a modified $h_4$ vertex calculated in arXiv:1810.04665. We present results at 13, 13.6 and 14 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The implementation of the calculation is made publicly available in the POWHEG-BOX-V2 Monte Carlo framework.
Complementing the preceding study of charged scalar leptons, the sector of the neutral scalar leptons, sneutrinos, is investigated in a high-precision analysis for future e+e- linear colliders. The theoretical predictions for the cross-sections are calculated at the thresholds for non-zero widths and in the continuum including higher-order corrections at the one-loop level. Methods for measuring the sneutrino masses and the electron-sneutrino-gaugino Yukawa couplings are presented, addressing theoretical problems specific for the sneutrino channels.
We correct our treatment of decays of the lightest chargino to final states containing the lightest neutralino in the case where the chargino and neutralino masses differ by less than 1 GeV. A brief summary of the phenomenological implications is given.
Extending earlier investigations, we analyze the quasi-elastic scattering of strongly interacting electroweak bosons at high-energy e+-e- colliders. The three processes e+e- -> bar-nu nu W+W-, bar-nu nu ZZ, and e-e- -> W-W- are examined at a c.m. energy of 1 TeV for high-luminosity runs. The expected experimental error on the scattering amplitude, parameter-free to leading order in the chiral expansion of the WW interactions, is estimated for 1 TeV colliders at the level of ten percent, providing a stringent test of strong interaction mechanisms for breaking the electroweak symmetries.
We extend our earlier study of spin correlations in the decay chain $D\to C q$, $C\to B l^{near}$, $B\to A l^{far}$, where $A,B,C,D$ are new particles with known masses but undetermined spins, $l^{near}$ and $l^{far}$ are opposite-sign same-flavour charged leptons and $A$ is invisible. Instead of looking at the observable 2- and 3-particle invariant mass distributions separately, we compare the full three-dimensional phase space distributions for all possible spin assignments of the new particles, and show that this enhances their distinguishability using a quantitative measure known as the Ku…
In this addendum to Phys. Rev. D 88, no. 1, 013009 (2013), we give results for the electroweak Sudakov corrections in gauge-boson production at large transverse momentum p_T at proton colliders. In order for the results to be easily usable, we provide a simple and accurate parameterization of the corrections as a function of p_T and the center-of-mass energy \sqrt{s}. Additionally, we also discuss the dependence of the electroweak corrections on the rapidity of the produced boson, and comment on the complications that arise in the photon-production case due to isolation requirements
We study the indirect constraints on the quartic Higgs self-coupling that arise from double-Higgs production at future hadron colliders. To this purpose, we calculate the two-loop contributions to the $gg \to hh$ amplitudes that involve a modified $h^4$ vertex. Based on our results, we estimate the reach of a $pp$ collider operating at $27 \, {\rm TeV}$ and $100 \, {\rm TeV}$ centre-of-mass energy in constraining the cubic and quartic Higgs self-couplings by measurements of double-Higgs and triple-Higgs production in gluon-fusion.
Measuring the shape of the Higgs boson potential is of paramount importance and will be a challenging task at current as well as future colliders. While the expectations for the measurement of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling are rather promising, an accurate measurement of the quartic self-coupling interaction is presently considered extremely challenging even at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. In this work we explore the sensitivity that a muon collider with a center of mass energy in the multi-TeV range, and luminosities of the order of 10^35cm^-2s^-1, as presently under discussio…
The quartic Higgs self-coupling is the final measurement in the Higgs potential needed to fully understand electroweak symmetry breaking. None of the present or future colliders are known to be able to determine this parameter. We study the chances of measuring the quartic self-coupling at hadron colliders in general and at the VLHC in particular. We find the prospects challenging.
This paper is a follow-up of Ref.~\cite{Ravasio:2018lzi}, where we studied the impact of next-to-leading order calculations merged with parton shower generators (NLO+PS) of increasing accuracy in the extraction of the top mass at hadron colliders. Here we examined results obtained with the older (fortran-based) shower generators Pythia6.4 and Herwig6.5. Our findings are in line with what we found in our previous paper with the new, c++-based, generators Pythia8.2 and Herwig7.1.
In this addendum to arXiv:1811.09603 we update our results including the recent measurement of ${\cal R}(D)$ and ${\cal R}(D^*)$ by the Belle collaboration: ${\cal R}(D)_{\rm Belle} = 0.307\pm0.037\pm0.016$ and ${\cal R}(D^*)_{\rm Belle}=0.283\pm0.018\pm0.014$, resulting in the new HFLAV fit result ${\cal R}(D) = {0.340\pm0.027 \pm 0.013}$, ${\cal R}(D^*) = {0.295\pm0.011 \pm 0.008 }$, exhibiting a $3.1\,σ$ tension with the Standard Model. We present the new fit results and update all figures, including the relevant new collider constraints. The updated prediction for ${\cal R}(Λ_c)$ from our …
Triple gauge boson production provides a promising opportunity to probe the anomalous quartic gauge couplings in understanding the details of electroweak symmetry breaking at future hadron-hadron collider facilities with increasing center of mass energy and luminosity. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivities of dimension-8 anomalous couplings related to the $ZZγγ$ and $Zγγγ$ quartic vertices, defined in the effective field theory framework, via $pp\to Zγγ$ signal process with Z-boson decaying to charged leptons at the high luminosity phase of LHC (HL-LHC) and future facilities, namely …
We study the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow W^+W^- γ$ at high-energy $e^+ e^-$ colliders to investigate the effect of genuine quartic $W^+W^-γγ$ and $W^+W^- Zγ$ anomalous couplings on the cross section. Deviations from the Standard Model predictions are quantified. We show how bounds on the anomalous couplings can be improved by choosing specific initial state helicity combinations. The dependence of the anomalous contributions on the collider energy is studied.
We explore the capability of a 500 or 1000 GeV $e^+e^-$ linear collider to measure anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings. In the framework of a non-linear effective Lagrangian with a custodial $SU)2)$ symmetry, there are only two next-to-leading order operators which contribute to quartic, but not to two- and three- gauge boson interactions. The limits on the coefficients of these operators from present and future $e^+e^-$ colliders are compared with those available from other sources.
The production of several vector bosons in $γγ$-interactions is the best place to search directly for any anomalous behavior of triple and quartic couplings. A few anomalous quartic boson operators are considered in the paper. A high precision of anomalous effects can be achieved by calculation of the lowest order electroweak corrections: one-loop corrections, real photon and $Z$-boson emission.
We obtain limits on the quartic neutral gauge bosons couplings $Zγγγ$ and $ZZγγ$ using LEP 2 data published by the L3 Collaboration on the reactions $e^+e^-\to γγγ, Zγγ$. We also obtain $95 \%$ C. L. limits on these couplings at the future linear colliders energies. The LEP 2 data induce limits of order $10^{-5}$ $GeV^{-4}$ for the $Zγγγ$ couplings and of order $10^{-3}$ $GeV^{-2}$ for the $ZZγγ$ couplings, which are still above the respective Standard Model predictions. Future $e^+e^-$ linear colliders may improve these limits by one or two orders of magnitude.
The dimension-four genuine anomalous quartic couplings are studied in processes of six-fermion production via e+e- collisions. Complete tree-level electroweak calculations are performed including initial-state-radiation and beamstrahlung. The analysis of final-state distributions can be used to find kinematical cuts to enhance the effects of anomalous couplings. For the parameters of the custodial-symmetry-conserving anomalous couplings a sensitivity in the range between 10^{-3} and 10^{-2} can be expected at 1 TeV.
We study new physics effects to the quartic gauge boson couplings formulated by the electroweak chiral Lagrangian. Five next-to-leading order operators characterize the anomalous quartic gauge interactions which involve pure Goldstone boson dynamics for the electroweak symmetry breaking. We estimate the typical size of these couplings in different strongly-interacting models and examine the sensitivity to directly probing them via the WWZ/ZZZ triple gauge boson production at the high energy linear colliders. The important roles of polarized e- and e+ beams are stressed. We then compare the res…
The production of three electroweak gauge bosons in high-energy $e^+e^-$ collisions offers a window on anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings. We investigate the effect of three possible anomalous couplings on the cross sections for $W^+W^-γ$, $Z^0Z^0γ$ and $Z^0γγ$ productions at LEP2 ($\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV) and at a future linear collider ($\sqrt{s} = 500$ GeV). We find that the combination of energies and processes provides reasonable discrimination between the various anomalous contributions.
We study the constraints on the vertices $W^+W^- Zγ$, $W^+W^-γγ$, and $ZZγγ$ that can be obtained from triple-gauge-boson production at the next generation of linear $e^+e^-$ colliders operating in the $γγ$ mode. We analyze the processes $γγ\to W^+W^-V$ ($V=Z$, or $γ$) and show that these reactions increase the potential of $e^+e^-$ machines to search for anomalous four-gauge-boson interactions.
We study the production of gauge boson pairs at the next generation of linear $e^+e^-$ colliders operating in the $eγ$ mode. The processes $eγ\rightarrow VV^\prime F$ ($V,V^\prime =W$, $Z$, or $γ$ and $F=e$ or $ν$) can give valuable information on possible deviations of the quartic vector boson couplings from the Standard Model predictions. We establish the range of the new couplings that can be explored in these colliders based on a $3σ$ effect in the total cross section. We also present several kinematical distributions of the final state particles that could manifest the underlying new dyna…
We analyze the potential of the e+e- Linear Colliders, operating in the e-gamma and gamma-gamma modes, to probe anomalous quartic vector--boson interactions through the multiple production of W's and Z's. We examine all $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral operators of order p^4 that lead to new four--gauge--boson interactions but do not alter trilinear vertices. We show that the e-gamma and gamma-gamma modes are able not only to establish the existence of a strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector but also to probe for anomalous quartic couplings of the order of 10^{-2} at 90% CL. Moreover, t…
We investigate the constraints on the anomalous quartic $W^{+}W^{-}Zγ$ gauge boson coupling through the process $e^{-}γ\to ν_{e}W^{-}Z$. Considering incoming beam polarizations and the longitudinal and transverse polarization states of the final W and Z boson we find 95% confidence level limits on the anomalous coupling parameter $a_{n}$ with an integrated luminosity of 500 $fb^{-1}$ and $\sqrt{s}$=0.5, 1 TeV energies. We show that initial beam and final state polarizations improve the sensitivity to the anomalous coupling by up to factors of 2 - 3.5 depending on the energy.
We find 95% confidence level limits on the anomalous coupling parameters $a_0$, $a_c$ and $a_n$ with an integrated luminosity of $500fb^{-1}$ and $\sqrt s =0.5, 1$ and 1.5 TeV energies. We take into account incoming beam polarizations and also the final state polarizations of the gauge bosons in the cross-section calculations to improve the bounds. We show that polarization leads to a significant amount of improvement in the sensitivity limits.
We analyze the potential of the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to study anomalous quartic vector--boson interactions (photon photon Z Z) and (photon photon W+ W-). Working in the framework of SU(2)_L X U(1)_Y chiral Lagrangians, we study the production of photons pairs accompanied by (e+e-), (e nu), and jet pairs to impose bounds on these new couplings, taking into account the unitarity constraints. We compare our findings with the indirect limits coming from precision electroweak measurements as well as with presently available direct searches at LEPII. We show that th…
The Large Hadron Electron Collider and the Future Circular Collider-hadron electron with high center-of-mass energy and luminosity allow to better understand the Standard Model and to examine new physics beyond the Standard Model in the electroweak sector. Multi-boson processes permit for a measurement of the gauge boson self-interactions of the Standard Model that can be used to determine the anomalous gauge boson couplings. For this purpose, we present a study of the process $ep \rightarrow ν_{e} γγj$ at the Large Hadron Electron Collider with center-of-mass energies of 1.30, 1.98 TeV and at…
The quartic gauge coupling (QGC) of the electroweak interaction can be used as a probe for physics beyond the Standard Model and has been previously measured at the Large Hadron Collider. However, to achieve sensitivity to small deviations the couplings must be measured with precision beyond the capability of a hadron collider. An electron-positron collider with center-of-mass energies in the TeV range can precisely probe the QGC and test a variety of models. The International Linear Collider is such a collider project with a possible extension to $1\,$TeV. In this note the critical reconstruc…
The larger center-of-mass energy of the Large Hadron Collider Run 2 opens up the possibility of a more detailed study of the quartic vertices of the electroweak gauge bosons. Our goal in this work is to classify all operators possessing quartic interactions among the electroweak gauge bosons that do not exhibit triple gauge-boson vertices associated to them. We obtain all relevant operators in the non-linear and linear realizations of the $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ gauge symmetry.
The Higgs self-interactions play a crucial role for exploring the underlying mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking and the nature of the phase transition involved. In this article, we propose to probe the quartic Higgs self-interaction at lepton and hadron colliders, via the di-Higgs productions. We analyze the contributions of the quartic Higgs coupling, including the renormalization of the cubic Higgs coupling and the modification of the $VVhh$ form factor, to the vector-boson-fusion and the vector-boson associated di-Higgs productions at one-loop level. Such an effect is independent of…
The calculation of the two-loop corrections to the electroweak gauge boson quartic couplings, growing quadratically with the Higgs boson mass, is reviewed. The potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider and e+e- linear collider to study such anomalous interactions is discussed.
We present a sensitivity study on the cubic and quartic self couplings in double Higgs production via gluon fusion at hadron colliders. Considering the relevant operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory up to dimension eight, we calculate the dominant contributions up to two-loop level, where the first dependence on the quartic interaction appears. Our approach allows to study the independent variations of the two self couplings and to clearly identify the terms necessary to satisfy gauge invariance and to obtain UV-finite results order by order in perturbation theory. We focus on…
In this paper, the potentials of two different processes $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow W^{-} W^{+}γ$ and $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow e^{+}γ^{*} e^{-} \rightarrow e^{+} W^{-} Z ν_{e}$ at the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) are examined to probe the anomalous quartic $WWZγ$ gauge couplings. For $\sqrt{s}=0.5, 1.5$ and 3 TeV energies at the CLIC, $95\%$ confidence level limits on the anomalous coupling parameters defining the dimension-six operators are found via the effective Lagrangian approach in a model independent way. The best limits on the anomalous couplings $\frac{k_{0}^{W}}{Λ^{2}}$, $\frac{k_{c}^{W…
We explore the experimental sensitivities of measuring the $gg \rightarrow Z γ$ process at the LHC to the dimension-8 quartic couplings of gluon pairs to the $Z$ boson and photon, in addition to comparing them with the analogous sensitivities in the $gg \to γγ$ process. These processes can both receive contributions from 4 different CP-conserving dimension-8 operators with distinct Lorentz structures that contain a pair of gluon field strengths, $\hat G^a_{μν}$, and a pair of electroweak SU(2) gauge field strengths, $W^i_{μν}$, as well as 4 similar operators containing a pair of $\hat G^a_{μν}…
Optimize the event selection strategy to study the anomalous quartic gauge couplings at muon colliders using the support vector machine and quantum support vector machine
The quartic gauge boson couplings that identify the strengths of the gauge boson self-interactions are exactly determined by the non-Abelian gauge nature of the Standard Model. The examination of these couplings at $ep$ collisions with high center-of-mass energy and high integrated luminosity provides an important opportunity to test the validity of the Standard Model and the existence of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The quartic gauge boson couplings can contribute directly to multi-boson production at colliders. Therefore, we examine the potential of the process $ep \rightarrow ν_{e…
The Higgs potential consists of an unexplored territory in which the electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered, and it is moreover directly related to the nature of the electroweak phase transition. Measuring the Higgs boson cubic and quartic couplings, or getting equivalently information on the exact shape of the Higgs potential, is therefore an essential task. However, direct measurements beyond the cubic self-interaction of the Higgs boson consist of a huge challenge, even for a future proton-proton collider expected to operate at a center-of-mass energy of 100 TeV. We present a novel appr…
The sensitivities to anomalous quartic photon couplings at the Large Hadron Collider are estimated using diphoton production via photon fusion. The tagging of the protons proves to be a very powerful tool to suppress the background and unprecedented sensitivities down to $6 \cdot 10^{-15}$\gev$^{-4}$ are obtained, providing a new window on extra dimensions and strongly-interacting composite states in the multi-TeV range. Generic contributions to quartic photon couplings from charged and neutral particles with arbitrary spin are also presented.
Gluon-gluon to photon-photon scattering $gg \to γγ$ offers to the LHC experiments a uniquely powerful probe of dimension-8 operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) that are quadratic in both the electromagnetic and gluonic field-strength tensors, such as would appear in the Born-Infeld extension of the Standard Model (SM). We use 13-TeV ATLAS data on the production of isolated photon pairs to set lower limits on the scales of dimension-8 operators $M \gtrsim 1$~TeV, and discuss the prospective sensitivities of possible future hadron colliders.
This article reviews some recent developments in the analysis of anomalous triple and quartic vector boson couplings that have been discussed at the UK Phenomenology Workshop on Collider Physics 1999 in Durham.
In this addendum to our paper entitled "W^+- H^-+ Associated Production at the Large Hadron Collider" [Phys. Rev. D 59, 015009 (1999)], we list analytic results for the helicity amplitudes of the partonic subprocess gg -> W^-H^+ induced by virtual quarks.
The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a large-scale future collider facility that can serve as a factory of the Higgs boson, the W boson and the Z boson. This document provides a brief summary of the CEPC physics potential and the detector design concepts, both of which are laid out in detail in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) released in November 2018. We also outline future directions and challenges. In the Addendum, we briefly describe the planning and the international organization of the CEPC. The next step for the CEPC team is to perform detailed technical design studies. …
Effective anomalous quartic gauge couplings on tree level appear, e.g., in a strong interacting Higgs scenario. We present a status report on our study on triple boson production sensitive to these couplings. The study is done for parameters of a future linear collider.
The measurements of the two-photon production of the Higgs boson and of $W^{\pm}$ boson pairs in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) are investigated. The processes $e^{+}e^{-}\xrightarrow{γγ}e^+\,{\rm H}\,e^-,e^+\,{\rm W^+W^-}\,e^-$ are computed using the effective photon approximation for electron-positron beams, and studied in their ${\rm H}\to b\bar{b}$ and ${\rm W^+W^-}\to 4j$ decay final-states including parton showering and hadronization, jet reconstruction, $e^\pm$ forward tagging, and realistic experimental cuts. After selection criteria, up to 75 Higgs bo…
In this paper, a study is carried out on the $e^-p \to e^-γ^* p \to p W^+γν_e$ production to probe quartic $W^+W^-γγ$ couplings using 10, 100 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ of $e^-p$ collisions data at $\sqrt{s}$= 1.30, 1.98 GeV at the Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) and 100, 1000 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ with $\sqrt{s}$= 3.46, 5.29 GeV at the Future Circular Collider-hadron electron (FCC-he). Production cross-sections are determined for both at leptonic and hadronic decay channel of the $W$-boson. With the data from future $e^-p$ colliders, it is possible to obtain sensitivity measures at $95\%$ C.L. on the an…
We obtain the constraints on possible anomalous quartic vector-boson vertices arising from the precision measurements at the $Z$ pole. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective operators of order $D=4$ that lead to four-gauge-boson interactions but do not induce anomalous trilinear vertices. We constrain the anomalous quartic interactions by evaluating their one-loop corrections to the $Z$ pole physics. Our analysis is performed in a generic $R_ξ$ gauge and it shows that only the operators that break the $SU(2)_C$ custodial symmetry get limits cl…
In this letter we report on a calculation of W gamma gamma + jet production at next-to-leading order QCD. We include the leptonic decays of the W and take into account all off-shell and finite width effects. This is the first computation which falls into the category of triboson+jet production at next-to-leading order QCD. In total we find sizable corrections with nontrivial phase space dependencies. Therefore, our results are important for phenomenological analyses such as the extraction of anomalous electroweak quartic couplings from inclusive hadron collider data.
Quartic vertices provide a window into one of the most important problems in particle physics; the understanding of electroweak symmetry breaking. I survey the various processes that have been proposed to study quartic gauge boson couplings at future $e^+e^-$, $eγ$, $γγ$, $e^-e^-$, and $pp$ colliders. For the lowest dimension operators that do not include photons, it appears that the LHC will provide the most constraining measurements. However, precision measurements at high energy $e^+e^-$ colliders involving $W^+W^-$ rescattering are also quite sensitive to the effects of a strongly interact…
