The quartic gauge coupling (QGC) of the electroweak interaction can be used as a probe for physics beyond the Standard Model and has been previously measured at the Large Hadron Collider. However, to achieve sensitivity to small deviations the couplings must be measured with precision beyond the capability of a hadron collider. An electron-positron collider with center-of-mass energies in the TeV range can precisely probe the QGC and test a variety of models. The International Linear Collider is such a collider project with a possible extension to $1\,$TeV.
In this note the critical reconstruction aspects of a QGC analysis in the vector boson scattering (VBS) channel of $e^+e^- \rightarrow ν\barν q\bar{q} q\bar{q}$ at $\sqrt{s}=1\,$TeV are identified for the International Large Detector. Generator level information from the event generator and simulation is used to gain access to influence of separate reconstruction effects. The separation of hadronic $WW$ and $ZZ$ decays by their invariant mass is chosen to quantify the strength of the effects. In the current simple reconstruction scheme the main obstacles are observed to be the removal of beam backgrounds, the jet clustering, and semi-leptonic decays within jets. At high center-of-mass energies of the VBS interaction jet clustering is found to no longer be a limiting factor. Points of optimizations are laid out for these aspects. In the case of semi-leptonic decays, proof-of-principal tests for corrections are performed and found to be challenging.
A full analysis which includes the extraction of limits on anomalous QGCs remains open. Sensitivities similar to those achieved in generator level studies with approximated detector effects are expected.
The larger center-of-mass energy of the Large Hadron Collider Run 2 opens up the possibility of a more detailed study of the quartic vertices of the electroweak gauge bosons. Our goal in this work is to classify all operators possessing quartic interactions among the electroweak gauge bosons that do not exhibit triple gauge-boson vertices associated to them. We obtain all relevant operators in the non-linear and linear realizations of the $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ gauge symmetry.
We study the $W/Z$ pair production via two-photon exchange at the LHC and give the sensitivities on trilinear and quartic gauge anomalous couplings between photons and $W/Z$ bosons for an integrated luminosity of 30 and 200 fb$^{-1}$. For simplicity and to obtain lower backgrounds, only the leptonic decays of the electroweak bosons are considered. The intact protons in the final states are detected in the ATLAS Forward Proton detectors. The high energy and luminosity of the LHC and the forward detectors allow to probe beyond standard model physics and to test the higgsless and extra dimension …
Constraints on quartic interactions of the Higgs boson with gauge bosons have been obtained by the experimental LHC collaborations focussing on the so-called $κ$ framework of flat rescalings of SM-like interactions in weak boson fusion (WBF) Higgs pair production. While such approaches are admissible to obtain a qualitative picture of consistency with the SM when the statistical yield is low, once more statistics become available a more theoretically consistent framework of limit setting is desirable. Reviewing the constraints provided at the Large Hadron Collider, we first show that these lim…
The exclusive two-photon production at the LHC of pairs of W and Z bosons provides a novel and unique test-ground for the electroweak gauge boson sector. In particular it offers, thanks to high gamma-gamma center-of-mass energies, large and direct sensitivity to the anomalous quartic gauge couplings otherwise very difficult to investigate at the LHC. An initial analysis has been performed assuming leptonic decays and generic acceptance cuts. Simulation of a simple counting experiment has shown for the integrated luminosity of 10 fb-1 at least four thousand times larger sensitivity to the genui…
Triple gauge boson production provides a promising opportunity to probe the anomalous quartic gauge couplings in understanding the details of electroweak symmetry breaking at future hadron-hadron collider facilities with increasing center of mass energy and luminosity. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivities of dimension-8 anomalous couplings related to the $ZZγγ$ and $Zγγγ$ quartic vertices, defined in the effective field theory framework, via $pp\to Zγγ$ signal process with Z-boson decaying to charged leptons at the high luminosity phase of LHC (HL-LHC) and future facilities, namely …
Gluon-gluon to photon-photon scattering $gg \to γγ$ offers to the LHC experiments a uniquely powerful probe of dimension-8 operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) that are quadratic in both the electromagnetic and gluonic field-strength tensors, such as would appear in the Born-Infeld extension of the Standard Model (SM). We use 13-TeV ATLAS data on the production of isolated photon pairs to set lower limits on the scales of dimension-8 operators $M \gtrsim 1$~TeV, and discuss the prospective sensitivities of possible future hadron colliders.
The study of charged and neutral boson vertices has been performed in different production channels at the LEP experiments. Decay rates and kinematic properties of these events are exploited to set constraints on the corresponding gauge couplings.
A complete list of operators contributing at the lowest order to Quartic Neutral Gauge Boson Couplings involving photons and Z-bosons, is presented. We show that, for the couplings we consider, the lowest order contribution is from dimension 8 operators in the case when a light Higgs is present and from dimension 6 operators in the higgsless case where electroweak symmetry is non-linearly realized. We also show that these operators are generated by exchange of the Kaluza-Klein partners of the graviton in extra-dimensional models. We then explore the possibility of probing these couplings in th…
Scrutiny of the structure of electroweak gauge boson self-interactions through triple and quartic gauge boson couplings (TGCs and QGCs) constitutes an important part of the physics program of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Triboson production and vector boson scattering (VBS) are directly sensitive to QGCs while vector boson fusion (VBF) offers a new window in the study of TGCs, which is complementary to conventional measurements using diboson production. In this contribution, an overview of recent TGC and QCG measurements using triboson production, VBS and VBF by the ATLAS and CMS experimen…
The process e+e- -> W+ W- gamma is studied using the data collected by the L3 detector at LEP. New results, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 427.4 pb-1 at centre-of-mass energies from 192 GeV to 207 GeV, are presented. The W+W- gamma cross sections are measured to be in agreement with Standard Model expectations. No hints of anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings are observed. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived using also the process e+e- --> nu nubar gamma gamma.
We obtain the partial-wave unitarity constraints on the lowest-dimension effective operators which generate anomalous quartic gauge couplings but leave the triple gauge couplings unaffected. We consider operator expansions with linear and nonlinear realizations of the electroweak symmetry and explore the multidimensional parameter space of the coefficients of the relevant operators: 20 dimension-eight operators in the linear expansion and 5 ${\cal O}(p^4)$ operators in the derivative expansion. We study two-to-two scattering of electroweak gauge bosons and Higgs bosons taking into account all …
The cross section of the process e^+ e^- -> Z γγ-> qq γγis measured with 215 pb^-1 of data collected with the L3 detector during the final LEP run at centre-of-mass energies around 205 GeV and 207 GeV. No deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed. The full data sample of 713 pb^-1, collected above the Z resonance, is used to constrain the coefficients of anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings to: -0.02 GeV^-2 < a_0/Λ^2 < 0.03 GeV^-2 and -0.07 GeV^-2 < a_c/Λ^2 < 0.05 GeV^-2, at 95% confidence level.
This paper presents the extended results of measurements of $W^{\pm}W^{\pm}jj$ production and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings using 20.3 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two leptons ($e$ or $μ$) with the same electric charge and at least two jets are analyzed. Production cross-sections are determined in two fiducial regions, with different sensitivities to the electroweak and strong production mechanisms. This Letter reports evidence of triple gauge boson production $pp\to W(\ellν)γγ+ X$, which is accessible for the first time with the 8 TeV LHC data set. The fiducial cross section for this process is measured in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the ATLAS detector in 2012. Events are selected using the $W$ boson decay to $eν$ or $μν$ as well as requiring two isolated photons. The measured cross section is used to set limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in the high diphoton mass region.
Gauge boson self-couplings are exactly determined by the non-Abelian gauge nature of the Standard Model (SM), thus precision measurements of these couplings at the LHC provide an important opportunity to test the gauge structure of the SM and the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism. It is a common way to examine the physics of anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings via effective Lagrangian method. In this work, we investigate the potential of the process $pp\rightarrow pγp\rightarrow p W Z q X$ to analyze anomalous quartic $WWZγ$ couplings by two different CP-violating and CP-conserving e…
A first measurement of the cross section of the process e+e- -> Z gamma gamma is reported using a total integrated luminosity of 231 pb^-1 collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies of 182.7 GeV and 188.7 GeV. By selecting hadronic events with two isolated photons the e+e- -> Z gamma gamma cross section is measured to be 0.49 +0.20 -0.17 +/- 0.04 pb at 182.7 GeV and 0.47 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.04 pb at 188.7 GeV. The measurements are consistent with Standard Model expectations. Limits on Quartic Gauge Boson Couplings a_0/Lambda^2 and a_c/Lambda^2 of -0.009 GeV^-2 < a_0/Lambda^2 < 0.008 …
W+W-gamma production at LEP2 is studied using data collected with the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 GeV and 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 600 pb^-1. Cross-sections are measured for the production of W+W- with a hard, central and isolated photon in the final state, and are found to be compatible with the Standard Model prediction. The photon energy spectra are used to derive limits on anomalous contributions to the W+W-Z0gamma and W+W-gammagamma vertices.

Composite effective field theory signal from anomalous quartic gauge couplings for $ZZ(\rightarrow\ell\ellνν)jj$ and $Zγ(\rightarrowννγ)jj$ productions
The search for quartic anomalous gauge couplings at LEP requires appropriate predictions for the radiative processes e+ e- \to ν\barνγγ, e+ e- \to q\bar{q}γγand e+ e- \to 4 fermions+γ. Matrix elements are exactly computed at the tree level, and the effects of anomalous couplings and initial-state radiation are included. Comparisons with results and approximations existing in the literature are shown and commented. Improved versions of the event generators NUNUGPV and WRAP are made available for experimental analysis.
We propose quartic inflation with non-minimal gravitational coupling in the context of the classically conformal U(1)_X extension of the SM. In this model, the U(1)_X gauge symmetry is radiatively broken through the Coleman-Weinberg (CW) mechanism, by which the U(1)_X gauge boson (Z' boson) and the right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) acquire their masses. We consider their masses in the range of O(10 GeV)-O(10 TeV), which are accessible to high energy collider experiments. The radiative U(1)_X gauge symmetry breaking also generates a negative mass squared for the SM Higgs doublet, and the electrowea…

We present a search for anomalous components of the quartic gauge boson coupling WWγγ in events with an electron, a positron and missing transverse energy. The analyzed data correspond to 9.7 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The presence of anomalous quartic gauge couplings would manifest itself as an excess of boosted WW events. No such excess is found in the data, and we set the most stringent limits to date on the anomalous coupling parameters a_0^W and a_C^W. When a form factor with Lambda_cutoff = 0.5 TeV is used, the o…

Candidate events are selected with exactly one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum, one photon, and two jets with large rapidity separation. An excess over the hypothesis of the standard model without electroweak production of W gamma with two jets is observed with a sign…
The Higgs self-interactions play a crucial role for exploring the underlying mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking and the nature of the phase transition involved. In this article, we propose to probe the quartic Higgs self-interaction at lepton and hadron colliders, via the di-Higgs productions. We analyze the contributions of the quartic Higgs coupling, including the renormalization of the cubic Higgs coupling and the modification of the $VVhh$ form factor, to the vector-boson-fusion and the vector-boson associated di-Higgs productions at one-loop level. Such an effect is independent of…

In the context of a simple gauge-Higgs unification (GHU) scenario based on the gauge group SU(3)$\times$U(1)$^\prime$ in a 5-dimensional flat space-time, we investigate a possibility to reproduce the observed Higgs boson mass of around 125 GeV. We introduce bulk fermion multiplets with a bulk mass and a (half) periodic boundary condition. In our analysis, we adopt a low energy effective theoretical approach of the GHU scenario, where the running Higgs quartic coupling is required to vanish at the compactification scale. Under this "gauge-Higgs condition," we investigate the renormalization gro…
This paper studies the utility of the processes $γγ\to γγ$, $γZ$, and $ZZ$ in searching for sources of CP violation arising from energy scales beyond the production thresholds of planned future colliders. In the context of an effective Lagrangian approach we consider the most general set of CP odd SU(2) $\times$ U(1) operators that give rise to genuinely quartic gauge boson couplings which can be probed in $2 \to 2$ scattering processes at a $γγ$ collider. We study each process in detail, emphasizing the complementary information that is obtained by varying the initial beam polarizations. Fina…
Recent measurements of multiboson production from the CMS experiment will be presented, as well as limits on anomalous triple and quartic gauge couplings. Precision measurements of multiboson production allow a basic test of the Standard Model, where higher order QCD and electroweak corrections can be probed. In addition searches of physics beyond the Standard Model in multiboson final states rely on precise determination of the Standard Model multiboson processes. The presence of triple and quartic gauge couplings in multiboson production also allows for tests of modification of these vertice…

These proceedings present measurements from ATLAS and CMS using proton-proton collisions with center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider that are sensitive to interactions between electroweak gauge bosons. Included analyses sensitive to triple gauge couplings are electroweak Z production and many diboson processes ($W^+W^-$, $W^{\pm}Z$, $ZZ$, $W^{\pm}γ$, and $Zγ$). In addition, $γγ\rightarrow W^+W^-$ production, $WVγ$ production, where $V=W,Z$, and $W^{\pm}W^{\pm}jj$ production are presented as probes of quartic gauge couplings.
The review of the measurements of the gauge couplings in the boson sector at LEP is presented. The measurements of the charged triple gauge couplings (cTGC) parameters from the four LEP experiments are combined and the results are in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions, proving the non-abelian structure of the SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y gauge simmetry. Different measurements of these parameters are reviewed and all possible fit methods discussed. The current limits on the anomalous neutral triple gauge couplings (nTGC) and the quartic gauge coplings (QGC) are also presented.
