Strongly-interacting dark matter can be accumulated in large quantities inside the Earth, and for dark matter particles in a few GeV mass range, it can exist in large quantities near the Earth's surface. We investigate the constraints imposed on such dark matter properties by its upscattering by fast neutrons in nuclear reactors with subsequent scattering in nearby well-shielded dark matter detectors, schemes which are already used for searches of the coherent reactor neutrino scattering. We find that the existing experiments cover new parameter space on the spin-dependent interaction between dark matter and the nucleon. Similar experiments performed with research reactors, and lesser amount of shielding, may provide additional sensitivity to strongly-interacting dark matter.
We explore how well reactor antineutrino experiments can constrain or measure the loss of quantum coherence in neutrino oscillations. We assume that decoherence effects are encoded in the size of the neutrino wave-packet, $σ$. We find that the current experiments Daya Bay and the Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation (RENO) already constrain $σ>1.0\times 10^{-4}$ nm and estimate that future data from the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) would be sensitive to $σ<2.1\times 10^{-3}$ nm. If the effects of loss of coherence are within the sensitivity of JUNO, we expect $σ$ to …
We investigate the impact of a fourth sterile neutrino at reactor and Spallation Neutron Source neutrino detectors. Specifically, we explore the discovery potential of the TEXONO and COHERENT experiments to subleading sterile neutrino effects through the measurement of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering event rate. Our dedicated $χ^2$-sensitivity analysis employs realistic nuclear structure calculations adequate for high purity sub-keV threshold Germanium detectors.
New limits for the Violation of Equivalence Principle (VEP) are obtained considering the mass-flavor mixing hypothesis. This analysis includes observations of solar and reactor neutrinos and has obtained a limit for the VEP parameter $|Δγ|$ contributing to the $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ disappearance channels of the order $|Δγ|<10^{-14}$, when it is assumed that neutrinos are mainly affected by the gravitational potential $φ\approx 10^{-5}$ due to the Great Attractor.
New limits on the weak mixing angle and on the electron neutrino effective charge radius in the low energy regime, below 100 MeV, are obtained from a combined fit of all electron-(anti)neutrino electron elastic scattering measurements. We have included the recent TEXONO measurement with a CsI (Tl) detector. Only statistical error of this measurement has been taken into account. Weak mixing angle is found to be sin^2 theta_W = 0.255 +0.022 -0.023. The electron neutrino effective charge radius squared is bounded to be r^2 = (0.9 +0.9 -1.0) x 10^{-32} cm^2. The sensitivity of future low energy ne…
In this work, we have explored the possibilities of improving CP violation discovery potential of newly planned Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE), U.S.A., by combining with data from reactors. The third mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is now very precisely measured and this precise measurenent of $θ_{13}$ helps in measurement of CP violation. Here, CP violation is studied with and without data from reactors. Impact of placing a ND is also studied. It is found that CPV discovery potential of LBNE with ND increases when combined with data from reactors. With a far detector of 35 kt, it is possible …
Medium baseline reactor experiments (Double Chooz, Daya Bay and RENO) provide a unique opportunity to test the presence of light sterile neutrinos. We analyze the data of these experiments in the search of sterile neutrinos and also test the robustness of theta_13 determination in the presence of sterile neutrinos. We show that existence of a light sterile neutrino state improves the fit to these data moderately. We also show that the measured value of theta_{13} by these experiments is reliable even in the presence of sterile neutrinos, and the reliability owes significantly to the Daya Bay a…
Most neutrino mass extensions of the standard electroweak model entail non-standard interactions which, in the low energy limit, can be parametrized in term of effective four-fermion operators $ν_αν_β\bar f f $. Typically of sub-weak strength, $ε_{αβ} G_F$, these are characterized by dimensionless coupling parameters, $ε_{αβ}$, which may be relatively sizeable in a wide class of schemes. Here we focus on non-universal (NU) flavor conserving couplings ($α= β$) with electrons ($f = e$) and analyse their impact on the phenomenology of solar neutrinos. We consistently take into account their effec…
We perform a detailed combined fit to the $\overline ν_e \rightarrow \overline ν_e$ disappearence data of the Daya Bay experiment and the appearance $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_{e}$ and disappearance $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_μ$ data of the Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) one in the presence of two models of new physics affecting neutrino oscillations, namely a model where sterile neutrinos can propagate in a large compactified extra dimension and a model where non-standard interactions (NSI) affect the neutrino production and detection. We find that the Daya Bay $\oplus$ T2K data combination constrains the largest ra…
The relatively large measured value of $θ_{13}$ has opened up the possibility of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy through earth matter effects. Amongst the current accelerator-based experiments only NOvA has a long enough baseline to observe earth matter effects. However, NOvA is plagued with uncertainty on the knowledge of the true value of $δ_{CP}$, and this could drastically reduce its sensitivity to the neutrino mass hierarchy. The earth matter effect on atmospheric neutrinos on the other hand is almost independent of $δ_{CP}$. The 50 kton magnetized Iron CALorimeter at the India-ba…
In this work we study the phenomenological consequences of the existence of long-range forces coupled to lepton flavour numbers in solar neutrino oscillations. We study electronic forces mediated by scalar, vector or tensor neutral bosons and analyze their effect on the propagation of solar neutrinos as a function of the force strength and range. Under the assumption of one mass scale dominance, we perform a global analysis of solar and KamLAND neutrino data which depends on the two standard oscillation parameters, Δm^2_{21} and \tan^2θ_{12}, the force coupling constant, its range and, for the…
In this work, we present a realistic analysis of the potential of the present-day reactor experiments Double Chooz, Daya Bay and RENO for probing the existence of sterile neutrinos. We present exclusion regions for sterile oscillation parameters for each of these experiments, using simulations with realistic estimates of systematic errors and detector resolutions, and compare the sterile parameter sensitivity regions we obtain with the existing bounds from other reactor experiments. We find that these experimental set-ups give significant bounds on the parameter Θ_{ee} especially in the low st…
This paper presents the science potential of a deep ocean antineutrino observatory being developed at Hawaii and elsewhere. The observatory design allows for relocation from one site to another. Positioning the observaory some 60 km distant from a nuclear reactor complex enables preecision measurement of neutrino mixing parameters, leading to a determination of neutrino mass hierarchy and theta_13. At a mid-Pacific location, the observatory measures the flux of uranium and thorium decay series antineutrinos from earth's mantle and performs a sensitive search for a hypothetical natural fission …
We propose that reactor experiments could be used to constrain the environment dependence of neutrino mass and mixing parameters, which could be induced due to an acceleron coupling to matter fields. There are several short-baseline reactor experiment projects with different fractions of air and earth matter along the neutrino path. Moreover, the short baselines, in principle, allow the physical change of the material between source and detector. Hence, such experiments offer the possibility for a direct comparison of oscillations in air and matter. We demonstrate that for $\sin^2 2 θ_{13} \gt…
Relativistic millicharged particles ($χ_q$) have been proposed in various extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics. We consider the scenarios where they are produced at nuclear reactor core and via interactions of cosmic-rays with the earth's atmosphere. Millicharged particles could also be candidates for dark matter, and become relativistic through acceleration by supernova explosion shock waves. The atomic ionization cross section of $χ_q$ with matter are derived with the equivalent photon approximation. Smoking-gun signatures with significant enhancement in the differential cros…
We demonstrate that one could measure the absolute matter density of the Earth's core with a vertical neutrino factory baseline at the per cent level for $\sin^2 2 θ_{13} \gtrsim 0.01$, where we include all correlations with the oscillation parameters in the analysis. We discuss the geographical feasibility of such an approach, and illustrate how the results change as a function of the detector location. We point out the complementarity to geophysics.
Recent results from PAMELA and ATIC hint that O(TeV) dark matter (DM) is annihilating, in our galactic neighborhood, predominantly to leptons. The annihilation rate is much larger now than during freeze-out, one possible explanation of this is a low-velocity enhancement of the annihilation cross section. In a model independent fashion, we show that in this case the rate of neutrino emission from the Earth, due to DM annihilation, may be greatly enhanced while the rate from the Sun is unaltered. There is potential for IceCube to see these earthborn neutrinos while the same parameter space will …

We argue that the detection of neutrino signature from the Earth core is an ideal approach for probing the coupling of heavy dark matter ($m_χ>10^{4}$ GeV) to nucleons. We first note that direct searches for dark matter (DM) in such a mass range do not provide stringent constraints. Furthermore the energies of neutrinos arising from DM annihilations inside the Sun cannot exceed a few TeV at the Sun surface due to the attenuation effect. Therefore the sensitivity to the heavy DM coupling is lost. Finally, the detection of neutrino signature from galactic halo can only probe DM annihilation cros…
We discuss prospects for probing short-range sterile neutrino oscillation using neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering with ultra-low energy ($\sim 10$ eV - 100 eV) recoil threshold cryogenic Ge detectors. The analysis is performed in the context of a specific and contemporary reactor-based experimental proposal, developed in cooperation with the Nuclear Science Center at Texas A\&M University, and references developing technology based upon economical and scalable detector arrays. The baseline of the experiment is substantially shorter than existing measurements, as near as about 2 meters from …

Neutrino-electron scattering can be used to probe neutrino electromagnetic properties at low-threshold underground detectors with good angular and recoil electron energy resolution. We propose to do this using a number of artificial neutrino and anti-neutrino sources such as $^{51}Cr_{24}$ and $^{90}Sr-Y$. The neutrino flux is known to within one percent, in contrast to the reactor case and one can reach lower neutrino energies. For the $^{90}Sr-Y$ source we estimate that the signal expected for a neutrino magnetic moment of $μ_ν=6 \times 10^{-11}μ_{B}$ will be comparable to that expected in t…
Realistic superstring models generically give rise to exotic matter states, which arise due to the ``Wilson-line'' breaking of the non-Abelian unifying gauge symmetry. Often such states are protected by a gauge or local discrete symmetry and therefore may be stable or meta-stable. We study the possibility of a flux of high energy neutrinos coming from the sun and the earth due to the annihilation of such exotic string states. We also discuss the expected flux for other heavy stable particles -- like the gluino LSP. We comment that the detection of ultra-energetic neutrinos from the sun and the…
In this paper, we first calculate the realistic Earth matter effects in the detection of type II supernova neutrinos at the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment which is currently under construction. It is found that the Earth matter effects depend on the neutrino incident angle $θ$, the neutrino mass hierarchy $Δm_{31}^{2}$, the crossing probability at the high resonance region inside the supernova, $P_{H}$, the neutrino temperature, $T_α$, and the pinching parameter in the neutrino spectrum, $η_α$. We also take into account the collective effects due to neutrino-neutrino interactions inside …
We argue that the detection of neutrino signature from the Earth's core can effectively probe the coupling of heavy dark matter ($m_χ>10^{4}$ GeV) to nucleons. We first note that direct searches for dark matter (DM) in such a mass range provide much less stringent constraint than the constraint provided by such searches for $m_χ\sim 100$ GeV. Furthermore the energies of neutrinos arising from DM annihilation inside the Sun cannot exceed a few TeVs at the Sun surface due to the attenuation effect. Therefore the sensitivity to the heavy DM coupling is lost. Finally, the detection of neutrino sig…
We calculated the matter effect, including both the Earth and supernova, on the detection of neutrinos from type II supernovae at the proposed Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment. It is found that apart from the dependence on the flip probability P_H inside the supernova and the mass hierarchy of neutrinos, the amount of the Earth matter effect depends on the direction of the incoming supernova neutrinos, and reaches the biggest value when the incident angle of neutrinos is around 93^\circ. In the reaction channel \barν_e + p --> e^+ + n the Earth matter effect can be as big as about 12%. For…
A future large-volume liquid scintillator detector such as the proposed 50 kton LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) detector would provide a high-statistics measurement of terrestrial antineutrinos originating from $β$-decays of the uranium and thorium chains. Additionally, the neutron is scattered in the forward direction in the detection reaction $\barν_e+p\to n+e^+$. Henceforth, we investigate to what extent LENA can distinguish between certain geophysical models on the basis of the angular dependence of the geoneutrino flux. Our analysis is based on a Monte-Carlo simulation with different…
MURMUR is a new passing-through-walls neutron experiment designed to constrain neutron/hidden neutron transitions allowed in the context of braneworld scenarios or mirror matter models. A nuclear reactor can act as a hidden neutron source, such that neutrons travel through a hidden world or sector. Hidden neutrons can propagate out of the nuclear core and far beyond the biological shielding. However, hidden neutrons can weakly interact with usual matter, making possible for their detection in the context of low-noise measurements. In the present work, the novelty rests on a better background d…
The observation of Earth matter effects in the spectrum of neutrinos coming from a next galactic core-collapse supernova (CCSN) could, in principle, reveal if neutrino mass ordering is normal or inverted. One of the possible ways to identify the mass ordering is through the observation of the modulations that appear in the spectrum when neutrinos travel through the Earth before they arrive at the detector. These features in the neutrino spectrum depend on two factors, the average neutrino energies, and the difference between the primary neutrino fluxes of electron and other flavors produced in…
The proposed 50 kt Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) detector at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) aims to detect atmospheric muon neutrinos and antineutrinos separately in the multi-GeV range of energies and over a wide range of path lengths. While passing through the Earth, the upward-going neutrinos experience a density-dependent matter effect, which can be utilized to extract information about the internal structure of Earth. Since the Earth's matter effect modifies the neutrino oscillation patterns differently for neutrinos and antineutrinos, the capability of ICAL to distinguish $μ^-$ and…
A future large-volume liquid scintillator detector would provide a high-statistics measurement of terrestrial antineutrinos originating from $β$-decays of the uranium and thorium chains. In addition, the forward displacement of the neutron in the detection reaction $\barν_e+p\to n+e^+$ provides directional information. We investigate the requirements on such detectors to distinguish between certain geophysical models on the basis of the angular dependence of the geoneutrino flux. Our analysis is based on a Monte-Carlo simulation with different levels of light yield, considering both unloaded a…
Light neutral mediators, with mass $\lesssim 1$ GeV, are common features of extensions to the Standard Model (SM). Current astrophysical and terrestrial experiments have constrained the model parameter space, and planned experiments around the world promise continued improvement in sensitivity. In this paper we study the prospects for probing light neutral mediators using terrestrial stopped pion and reactor sources in combination with ultra-low threshold nuclear and electron recoil detectors. We show that the coherent neutrino-nucleus and neutrino-electron scattering channels provide compleme…
In this paper we focus on the Earth matter effects for the solar parameter determination by a medium baseline reactor experiment such as JUNO. We derive perturbative expansions for the mixing angles $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{13}$ as well as the $Δm^2_{21}$ and $Δm^2_{31}$ in terms of the matter potential relevant for JUNO. These expansions, up to second order in the matter potential, while simple, allow one to calculate the electron antineutrino survival probability to a precision much better than needed for the JUNO experiment. We use these perturbative expansions to semi-analytically explain and conf…
We find an analytical expression of neutrino evolution operator in the Earth matter using perturbative approach in the context of three neutrino oscillations. We find that our analytical expression is highly accurate by comparing its results with the numerical solutions of neutrino evolution equation at energy scales relevant for solar, reactor, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrinos. Using our analytical approach we study the accuracy of hypothesis of treating the Earth density piecewise constant. We also study how the Earth matter effect can change the sensitivity to CP phase parameter $δ_{C…
We explore the potential of current and next generation of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) experiments in probing neutrino electromagnetic interactions. On the basis of a thorough statistical analysis, we determine the sensitivities on each component of the Majorana neutrino transition magnetic moment (TMM), $\left \vert Λ_i \right \vert$, that follow from low-energy neutrino-nucleus experiments. We derive the sensitivity to neutrino TMM from the first CE$ν$NS measurement by the COHERENT experiment, at the Spallation Neutron Source. We also present results for the next p…
Future experiments dedicated to the detection of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering may be powerful tools in probing light new physics. In this paper we study the sensitivity on light $Z'$ mediators of two proposed experiments: a directional low pressure Time Projection Chamber detector, $ν$BDX-DRIFT, that will utilize neutrinos produced at the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility, and several possible experiments to be installed at the European Spallation Source. We compare the results obtained with existing limits from fixed-target, accelerator, solar neutrino and reactor experiments. F…
Dark Matter could potentially manifest itself in the form of asymmetric dark stars. In this paper we entertain the possibility of probing such asymmetric bosonic dark matter stars by the use of atomic clocks. If the dark sector connects to the standard model sector via a Higgs or photon portal, the interior of boson stars that are in a Bose-Einstein condensate state can change the values of physical constants that control the timing of atomic clock devices. Dilute asymmetric dark matter boson stars passing through the Earth can induce frequency shifts that can be observed in separated Earth ba…
The sources of the observed ultra-high energy cosmic rays must also generate ultra-high energy neutrinos. Deep inelastic scattering of these neutrinos with nucleons on Earth probe center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} \sim 100$ TeV, well beyond those attainable at terrestrial colliders. By comparing the rates for two classes of observable events, any departure from the benchmark (unscreened perturbative QCD) neutrino-nucleon cross-section can be constrained. Using the projected sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to quasi-horizontal showers and Earth-skimming tau neutrinos, we show that a …
We consider (ν_μ--> ν_e) oscillations in long baseline experiments within a three flavor framework. A non-zero measurement of this oscillation probability implies that the (13) mixing angle `phi' is non-zero. We consider the effect of neutrino propagation through the matter of earth's crust and show that, given the constraints from solar neutrino and CHOOZ data, matter effects enhance the mixing for neutrinos rather than for anti-neutrinos. We need data from two different experiments with different baseline lengths (such as K2K and MINOS) to distinguish matter effects unambiguously.
Paleo-detectors are a proposed experimental technique to search for dark matter by reading out the damage tracks caused by nuclear recoils in small samples of natural minerals. Unlike a conventional real-time direct detection experiment, paleo-detectors have been accumulating these tracks for up to a billion years. These long integration times offer a unique possibility: by reading out paleo-detectors of different ages, one can explore the time-variation of signals on megayear to gigayear timescales. We investigate two examples of dark matter substructure that could give rise to such time-vary…
The problem of the geoantineutrino deficit and the experimental results of the interaction of uranium dioxide and carbide with iron-nickel and silica-alumina melts at high pressure (5-10 GPa) and temperature (1600- 22000 C) have induced us to consider the possible consequences of made by V. Anisichkin and A. Ershov supposition that there is an actinoid shell on boundary of liquid and solid phases of the Earth's core. We have shown that the activation of a natural nuclear reactor operating as the solitary waves of nuclear burning in 238U- and/or 232Th-medium (in particular, the neutron-fission …
Measurements of flavor ratios of astrophysical neutrino fluxes are sensitive to the two yet unknown mixing parameters $θ_{13}$ and $δ$ through the combination $\sinθ_{13}\cosδ$. We extend previous studies by considering the possibility that neutrino fluxes from more than a single type of sources will be measured. We point out that, if reactor experiments establish a lower bound on $θ_{13}$, then neutrino telescopes might establish an upper bound on $|\cosδ|$ that is smaller than one, and by that prove that CP is violated in neutrino oscillations. Such a measurement requires several favorable i…
We set conservative constraints on decaying dark matter particles with masses spanning a very wide range ($10^4-10^{16}$ GeV). For this we use multimessenger observations of cosmic-ray (CR) protons/antiprotons, electrons/positrons, neutrinos/antineutrinos and gamma rays. Focusing on decays into the $\bar{b}b$ channel, we simulate the spectra of dark matter yields by using the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equations and the $\texttt{Pythia}$ package. We then propagate the CRs of dark matter origin till Earth by using the state-of-the-art numerical frameworks $\texttt{CRPropa}$, $\t…
It is possible that bosonic dark matter forms halos around the Sun or the Earth. We discuss the possibility of probing such halos with atomic clocks. Focusing on either a Higgs portal or photon portal interaction between the dark matter and the Standard Model, we search the possible parameter space for which a clock on Earth and a clock in space would have a discernible frequency difference. Bosonic dark matter halos surrounding the Earth can potentially be probed with current optical atomic clocks.
It has been pointed out by Shlyakhter that data from the natural fission reactors which operated about two billion years ago at Oklo (Gabon) had the potential of providing an extremely tight bound on the variability of the fine-structure constant alpha. We revisit the derivation of such a bound by: (i) reanalyzing a large selection of published rare-earth data from Oklo, (ii) critically taking into account the very large uncertainty of the temperature at which the reactors operated, and (iii) connecting in a new way (using isotope shift measurements) the Oklo-derived constraint on a possible s…
We discuss the capabilities of a future neutrino factory based on intense neutrino beams from a muon storage ring to explore the non-standard neutrino matter interactions, which are assumed to be sub-leading effects in the standard mass induced neutrino oscillations. The conjunction of these two mechanisms will magnify fake CP violating effect in the presence of matter which is not coming from the CP phase in the neutrino mixing matrix. We show that such fake CP violation can be observed in neutrino factory experiments by measuring the difference between the neutrino and anti-neutrino probabil…
Dark matter particles in the galactic halo can scatter off particles in celestial bodies such as stars or planets, lose energy and become gravitationally trapped. In this process, an accumulation of dark matter in the center of celestial bodies is expected, for example, at the center of the Earth. If dark matter self-annihilates into Standard Model particles, the end products of these annihilations include neutrinos. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the geographic South Pole can detect the resulting flux of neutrinos originating from dark matter annihilation in the center of the Earth. A se…
We present a concept for a high-precision optical atomic clock (OAC) operating on an Earth-orbiting space station. This pathfinder science mission will compare the space-based OAC with one or more ultra-stable terrestrial OACs to search for space-time-dependent signatures of dark scalar fields that manifest as anomalies in the relative frequencies of station-based and ground-based clocks. This opens the possibility of probing models of new physics that are inaccessible to purely ground-based OAC experiments where a dark scalar field may potentially be strongly screened near Earth's surface. Th…
