Optimal control problems of tracking type for a class of linear systems with uncertain parameters in the dynamics are investigated. An affine tracking feedback control input is obtained by considering the minimization of an energy-like functional depending on a finite ensemble of training/sample parameters. It is computed from the nonnegative definite solution of an associated differential Riccati equation. Simulations are presented showing the tracking performance of the computed input for trained as well as untrained parameters.
This paper proposes a general framework for constructing feedback controllers that drive complex dynamical systems to "efficient" steady-state (or slowly varying) operating points. Efficiency is encoded using generalized equations which can model a broad spectrum of useful objectives, such as optimality or equilibria (e.g. Nash, Wardrop, etc.) in noncooperative games. The core idea of the proposed approach is to directly implement iterative solution (or equilibrium seeking) algorithms in closed loop with physical systems. Sufficient conditions for closed-loop stability and robustness are deriv…
This paper applies geometric PID control for asymptotic tracking of a desired trajectory by a hoop robot in the presence of disturbances and uncertainties. The hoop robot, consisting of a circular body rolling without slip along a one-dimensional surface, is a planar analog of a spherical robot. A variety of coupled mechanical system may be used to actuate the hoop robot. This paper specifically considers two different actuators, one a simple pendulum and the other an internal cart. The geometric PID controller requires the plant to be a mechanical system, and the hoop robot does not satisfy t…
This paper develops and analyzes feedback-based online optimization methods to regulate the output of a linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamical system to the optimal solution of a time-varying convex optimization problem. The design of the algorithm is based on continuous-time primal-dual dynamics, properly modified to incorporate feedback from the LTI dynamical system, applied to a proximal augmented Lagrangian function. The resultant closed-loop algorithm tracks the solution of the time-varying optimization problem without requiring knowledge of (time-varying) disturbances in the dynamical sys…
We use online convex optimization (OCO) for setpoint tracking with uncertain, flexible loads. We consider full feedback from the loads, bandit feedback, and two intermediate types of feedback: partial bandit where a subset of the loads are individually observed and the rest are observed in aggregate, and Bernoulli feedback where in each round the aggregator receives either full or bandit feedback according to a known probability. We give sublinear regret bounds in all cases. We numerically evaluate our algorithms on examples with thermostatically controlled loads and electric vehicles.
In this work, we consider the output tracking and disturbance rejection problems of a mono-tubular heat exchanger process and a novel finite-dimensional output feedback regulator is developed. In the proposed output feedback regulator design, measurements available for the regulator do not belong to the set of controlled outputs. In other words, design emphasizes that other than controlled output is used as input signal to the regulator. The proposed output feedback regulator with only plant measurement ym(t) can realize the exosystem state estimation, disturbance rejection and reference signa…
We consider the problem of designing a state feedback control law to achieve nonovershooting tracking for feedback linearisable multiple-input multiple-output nonlinear systems. The reference signal is assumed to be obtained from a linear exosystem. The design method adopts known methods for the nonovershooting tracking of linear systems and extends them to the output regulation of feedback linearisable nonlinear systems. The method accommodates arbitrary initial conditions and offers design choice of the tracking convergence speed.
We study output reference tracking of systems with high relative degree via output feedback only; this is, tracking where the output derivatives are unknown. To this end, we prove that the conjunction of the funnel pre-compensator with a minimum phase system of arbitrary relative degree yields a system of the same relative degree which is minimum phase as well. The error between the original system's output and the pre-compensator's output evolves within a prescribed performance funnel; and moreover, the derivatives of the funnel pre-compensator's output are known explicitly. Therefore, output…
We exploit a recently developed funnel control methodology for linear non-minimum phase systems to design an output error feedback controller for a nonlinear robotic manipulator, which is not minimum phase. We illustrate the novel control design by a numerical case study, where we simulate end-effector output tracking of the robotic manipulator.
A novel dynamic model-based trajectory tracking control law is proposed for a four-wheel differentially driven mobile robot using a backstepping technique that guarantees the Lyapunov stability. The present work improves the work of Caracciolo et al. (ICRA 1999), a dynamic feedback linearization approach, by reducing the number of required assumptions and the number of state terms. We also thoroughly investigate on a gain tuning procedure which is often overlooked for nonlinear controllers. Finally, the performance of the proposed controller is compared with the dynamic feedback linearization …
The conceptually new approach based on the logarithmic norm to design of robust adaptive state-feedback controller for linear time-varying (LTV) systems under system's modeling uncertainty and nonlinear external disturbance is proposed. This controller, consisting of two independent parts - adaptive and robust ones - globally asymptotically stabilizes every LTV system regardless how large the disturbance is.

In this paper, we consider a robust consensus tracking problem of heterogeneous multi-agent systems with time-varying interconnection topologies. Based on common Lyapunov function and internal model techniques, both state and output feedback control laws are derived to solve this problem. The proposed design is robust by admitting some parameter uncertainties in the multi-agent system.
In this paper, we propose a chance constrained stochastic model predictive control scheme for reference tracking of distributed linear time-invariant systems with additive stochastic uncertainty. The chance constraints are reformulated analytically based on mean-variance information, where we design suitable Probabilistic Reachable Sets for constraint tightening. Furthermore, the chance constraints are proven to be satisfied in closed-loop operation. The design of an invariant set for tracking complements the controller and ensures convergence to arbitrary admissible reference points, while a …

We introduce a new hybrid control strategy, which is conceptually different from the commonly used synergistic hybrid approaches, to efficiently deal with the problem of the undesired equilibria that precludes smooth vectors fields on $SO(3)$ from achieving global stability. The key idea consists in constructing a suitable potential function on $SO(3)\times \mathbb{R}$ involving an auxiliary scalar variable, with flow and jump dynamics, which keeps the state away from the undesired critical points while, at the same time, guarantees a decrease of the potential function over the flows and jumps…
A finite horizon optimal tracking problem is considered for linear dynamical systems subject to parametric uncertainties in the state-space matrices and exogenous disturbances. A suboptimal solution is proposed using a model predictive control (MPC) based explicit dual control approach which enables active uncertainty learning. A novel algorithm for the design of robustly invariant online terminal sets and terminal controllers is presented. Set membership identification is used to update the parameter uncertainty online. A predicted worst-case cost is used in the MPC optimization problem to mo…

This work focuses on dynamic regret of online convex optimization that compares the performance of online learning to a clairvoyant who knows the sequence of loss functions in advance and hence selects the minimizer of the loss function at each step. By assuming that the clairvoyant moves slowly (i.e., the minimizers change slowly), we present several improved variation-based upper bounds of the dynamic regret under the true and noisy gradient feedback, which are {\it optimal} in light of the presented lower bounds. The key to our analysis is to explore a regularity metric that measures the te…
This paper studies cooperative tracking problem of heterogeneous Euler-Lagrange systems with an uncertain leader. Different from most existing works, system dynamic knowledge of the leader node is unaccessible to any follower node in our paper. Distributed adaptive observers are designed for all follower nodes, simultaneously estimate the state and parameters of the leader node. The observer design does not rely on the frequency knowledge of the leader node, and the estimation errors are shown to converge to zero exponentially. Moreover, the results are applied to general directed graphs, wher…
The distributed optimal output consensus problem for high-order multi-agent systems has been studied recently. In this paper, we further focus on the same problem for high-order multi-agent systems subject to parametric uncertainties and aim at distributed robust controllers by measurement output feedback. We first develop a dynamic compensator to estimate the expected optimal consensus point and convert the problem into several decentralized robust tracking problems. Then, by combining the integral control technique and dirty derivative observer technique, we constructively propose a distribu…
