The atomic configuration of phases and their interfaces is fundamental to materials design and engineering. Here, we unveil a transition metal oxide interface, whose formation is driven by energetic influences - epitaxial tensile strain versus oxygen octahedra connectivity - that compete in determining the orientation of an orthorhombic perovskite film. We study this phenomenon in a system of LaVO$_3$ grown on (101) DyScO$_3$, using atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy to measure intrinsic markers of orthorhombic symmetry. We identify that the film resolves this energetic conflict by switching its orientation by 90 degrees at an atomically-flat plane within its volume, not at the film/substrate interface. At either side of this "switching plane", characteristic orthorhombic distortions tend to zero to couple mismatched oxygen octahedra rotations. The resulting boundary is highly energetic, which makes it a priori unlikely; by using second-principles atomistic modeling, we show how its formation requires structural relaxation of an entire film grown beyond a critical thickness measuring tens of unit cells. The switching plane breaks the inversion symmetry of the Pnma orthorhombic structure, and sharply joins two regions, a thin intermediate layer and the film bulk, that are held under different mechanical strain states. By therefore contacting two distinct phases of one compound that would never otherwise coexist, this alternative type of interface opens new avenues for nanoscale engineering of functional systems, such as a chemically-uniform but magnetically inhomogeneous heterostructure.
While the tetragonal antiferro-electrically distorted (AFD) phase with space group $I4/mcm$ is well known for SrTiO$_3$ to occur below 105 K, there are also some hints in literature of an orthorhombic phase, either at lower temperature at high pressure. A previously proposed orthorhombic layered structure of SrTiO$_3$, known as the post-perovskite or CaIrO$_3$ structure with space group $Cmcm$ is shown to have significantly higher energy than the cubic or tetragonal phase and to have its minimum volume at larger volume than cubic perovskite. It thus cannot correspond to a high-pressure phase o…
Strain engineering with different substrate facets is promising for tuning functional properties of thin film perovskite oxides. By choice of facet, different surface symmetries and chemical bond directions for epitaxial interfaces can be tailored. Here, preparation of well-defined pseudo-cubic (111)-oriented orthorhombic substrates of DyScO3 , GdScO3 , and NdGaO3 is reported. The choice of orthorhombic facet, (011)o or (101)o , both corresponding to pseudo-cubic (111)pc , gives vicinal surfaces with single or double (111pc layer terrace step heights, respectively, impacting subsequent thin fi…
Perovskites and related structures are renowned for technologically useful applications. The structural variations in perovskite crystals result in novel properties which can be regulated by external forces. The study attempts to regulate distortion of a perovskite compound LaFeO3 driven solely by reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and to demonstrate the effect using a critical parameter - electrochemical conductivity. A series of graphene concentration varied nanocomposites were synthesized via hydrothermal method. The crystal distortion is investigated using X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refineme…
We use ab initio electronic structure calculations in combination with Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the magnetic and ferroelectric properties of bulk orthorhombic HoMnO$_3$ and ErMnO$_3$. Our goals are to explain the inconsistencies in the measured magnetic properties of the orthorhombic perovskite manganites (o-$R$MnO$_3$) with small rare-earth ($R$) cations or Y, as well as the contradictions between the directions and amplitudes of the electric polarizations reported by different experimental groups. Our computations stabilize several exotic magnetic orders (so-called w-spiral, H-…
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have drawn significant interest for applications in optoelectronics over the last few years. Despite rapid progress in understanding the photophysics of perovskite, there remains a need for improved understanding of the effect of microstructure on perovskite photophysical processes. Here, we combine unsupervised machine learning and cathodoluminescence microscopy of a prototypical hybrid perovskite film to decode photophysical processes that are otherwise lost with conventional Gaussian image processing. Hyperspectral maps are decoded with non-negative matr…
Inorganic lead halide perovskites are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications, due to their bandgap tunability, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and narrow emission line widths. In particular, they offer the possibility to vary the bandgap as a function of the halide composition and dimension/shape of the crystals at the nanoscale. Here we present an aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscopy (STEM) study of extended nanosheets of CsPbBr3 directly demonstrating their orthorhombic crystal structure and their lateral termination with Cs-Br planes. The bandgaps from i…
Earths lower mantle extending from 670 to 2,990 km deep is predominantly composed of a perovskite-type (Mg,Fe)SiO3 phase1,2. The perovskite phase undergoes a structural phase transition to a post-perovskite phase responsible for D" layer seismic discontinuity2,3 at about 2690 km depth in the lowermost region of the lower mantle. However, structural basis of other seismic discontinuities occurring in the upper region of the lower mantle (700 km to 1,200 km deep) remains unexplained4-7, as no apparent change in the crystal symmetry of the orthorhombic perovskite phase has been reported5. We pres…
We use resonant and non-resonant X-ray diffraction measurements in combination with first-principles electronic structure calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to study the relationship between crystal structure and multiferroic orders in the orthorhombic perovskite manganites, o-$R$MnO$_3$ ($R$ is a rare-earth cation or Y). In particular, we focus on how the internal lattice parameters (Mn-O bond lengths and Mn-O-Mn bond angles) evolve under chemical pressure and epitaxial strain, and the effect of these structural variations on the microscopic exchange interactions and long-range magnetic…
There have been increasing efforts in realizing topological metallic phases with nontrivial surface states. It was suggested that orthorhombic perovskite iridates are classified as a topological crystalline metal (TCM) with flat surface states protected by lattice symmetries. Here we perform first-principles electronic structure calculations for epitaxially stabilized orthorhombic perovskite iridates. Remarkably, two different types of topological surface states are found depending on surface directions. On side surfaces, flat surface states protected by lattice symmetries emerge, manifesting …
The possibility to segregate cobalt and iron in a single perovskite, at a nanoscale in the form of layers has been investigated, using sol gel technic synthesis. Quite remarkably, it is shown that such a nanoscale ordering, which can only be detected by a combined HAADF-STEM and EELS study, has a significant impact upon the magnetic properties of this SmFe0.5Co0.5O3 oxide. This suggests that careful nanoscale characterization of oxides will be necessary in the future before proceeding to a viable interpretation of their physical properties, at least in the field of magnetism.
Spin reorientation and magnetisation reversal are two important features of the rare-earth orthorhombic provskites ($RM$O$_{3}$'s) that have attracted a lot of attention, though their exact microscopic origin has eluded researchers. Here, using density functional theory and classical atomistic spin dynamics we build a general Heisenberg magnetic model that allows to explore the whole phase diagram of the chromite and ferrite compounds and to scrutinize the microscopic mechanism responsible for spin reorientations and magnetisation reversals. We show that the occurrence of a magnetization rever…
In this paper we provide an accurate high-pressure structural and optical study of MAPbI3 hybrid perovskite. Structural data show the presence of a phase transition towards an orthorhombic structure around 0.3 GPa followed by full amorphization of the system above 3 GPa. After releasing pressure the systems keeps the high-pressure orthorhombic phase. The occurrence of these structural transitions is further confirmed by pressure induced variations of the photoluminescence signal at high pressure. These variations clearly indicate that the bandgap value and the electronic structure of MAPI chan…
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM) was used to directly image nanoscale Néel skyrmions in a SrIrO3 / SrRuO3 bilayer system that are among the smallest reported to date in any system. Off-axis magnetron sputtering was used to cap epitaxial films of the oxide ferromagnet SRO with 2 unit cells of SrIrO3, intended to provide interfacial spin orbit coupling. Atomic resolution STM imaging and tunneling spectroscopy were used to identify island-like SrIrO3 grains and small regions of bare SrRuO3. Isolated skyrmions were only observed in SrIrO3-covered regions of the film, and exhibi…
We use ab initio electronic structure calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA+U) to density functional theory (DFT) to determine the microscopic exchange interactions in the series of orthorhombic rare-earth manganites, o-$R$MnO$_3$. Our motivation is to construct a model Hamiltonian (excluding effects due to spin-orbit coupling), which can provide an accurate description of the magnetism in these materials. First, we consider TbMnO$_3$, which exhibits a spiral magnetic order at low temperatures. We map the exchange couplings in this compound onto a Heisenberg Hamiltoni…
We report a systematic investigation of orthorhombic perovskite-type RCrO3 powder samples by Raman scattering for nine different rare earth R3+ cations (R = Y, La, Pr, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu). The room-temperature Raman spectra and the associated phonon mode assignment provide reference data for structural investigation of the whole series of RCrO3 orthochromites and phonon ab-initio calculations. The assignment of the chromite spectra and comparison with Raman data on other orthorhombic perovskites allows correlating the phonon modes with the structural distortions in the RCrO3 series. In par…
Controlling grain orientations within polycrystalline all-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells can help increase conversion efficiencies toward their thermodynamic limits, however the forces governing texture formation are ambiguous. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, we report meso-structure formation within polycrystalline CsPbI2.85Br0.15 powders as they cool from a high-temperature cubic perovskite (α-phase). Tetragonal distortions (\b{eta}-phase) trigger preferential crystallographic alignment within polycrystalline ensembles, a feature we suggest is coordinated across multiple neighb…
In this study, we determined the different physical characteristics of nanoscale layered mixed Fe-Co layers of orthoferrite SmFe0.5Co0.5O3 based on magnetic and dielectric measurements.Magnetization analyzes showed that the system was antiferromagnetic with a magnetic transition around 310 K and two spin-reorientation transitions at around 192 K and 22 K.In this phase, the antisymmetric exchange interaction induced weak ferromagnetism due to canting of the magnetic spins in a similar manner to the Ln-Fe-Co system. Importantly, this nanoscale layered perovskite also exhibited a positive magneto…
The lattice constants of Strontium titanate perovskite has been studied using the Density functional theory formalism at the PBE and the HSE levels of theory. The study has been done in all the 3 existing phases; namely cubic, orthorhombic and tetragonal, however, experimental details are available only for the cubic phase so far.
Ferromagnetism and its evolution in the orthorhombic perovskite system Sr1-xCaxRuO3 have been widely believed to correlate with the structural distortion. The recent development of high-pressure synthesis of the Ba substituted Sr1-yBayRuO3 makes it possible to study ferromagnetism over a broader phase diagram, which includes new orthorhombic Imma and the cubic phases. However, the chemical substitutions introduce the A-site disorder effect on Tc, which complicates determination of the relationship between ferromagnetism and the structural distortion. By clarifying the site disorder effect on T…
NiO6-octahedral tilts in ultrathin LaNiO3 films were studied using position averaged convergent beam electron diffraction (PACBED) in scanning transmission electron microscopy. Both the type and magnitude of the octahedral tilts were determined by comparing PACBED experiments to frozen phonon multislice simulations. It is shown that the out-of-plane octahedral tilt of an epitaxial film under biaxial tensile stress (0.78 % in-plane tensile strain) increases by ~ 20%, while the in-plane rotation decreases by ~ 80%, compared to the unstrained bulk material.

Halide perovskites perform remarkably in optoelectronic devices including tandem photovoltaics. However, this exceptional performance is striking given that perovskites exhibit deep charge carrier traps and spatial compositional and structural heterogeneity, all of which should be detrimental to performance. Here, we resolve this long-standing paradox by providing a global visualisation of the nanoscale chemical, structural and optoelectronic landscape in halide perovskite devices, made possible through the development of a new suite of correlative, multimodal microscopy measurements combining…
Using nanoprobe X-ray diffraction microscopy, we investigate the relationship between residual strains from crystal growth in CsPbBr$_3$ thin film crystals, their stability, and local bandgap. We find that out-of-plane compressive strain that arises from cooldown from crystallization is detrimental to material stability under X-ray irradiation. We also find that the optical photoluminescence red shifts as a result of the out-of-plane compressive strain. The sensitivity of bandgap to strain suggests possible applications such as stress-sensitive sensors. Mosaicity, the formation of small misori…
Halide perovskite solar cells based on CH3NH3PbI3 and related materials have emerged as the most exciting development in the next generation photovoltaic technologies, yet the microscopic phenomena involving photo-carriers, ionic defects, spontaneous polarization, and molecular vibration and rotation interacting with numerous grains, grain boundaries, and interfaces are still inadequately understood. In fact, there is still need for an effective method to interrogate the local photovoltaic properties of halide perovskite solar cells that can be directly traced to their microstructures on one h…
Computational study of structural, elastic, electronic, phonon dispersion relation and thermodynamic properties of orthorhombic CaZrS$_3$ for optoelectronic applications
Nanoscale investigations by scanning probe microscopy have provided major contributions to the rapid development of organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHP) as optoelectronic devices. Further improvement of device level properties requires a deeper understanding of the performance-limiting mechanisms such as ion migration, phase segregation and their effects on charge extraction both at the nano- and macroscale. Here, we have studied the dynamic electrical response of Cs0.05(FA0.83-MA0.17)0.95PbI3-xBrx perovskite structures by employing conventional and microsecond time-resolved Kelvin prob…
We performed first principles calculations for epitaxially strained orthorhombic CaTiO$_3$. The computational results reveal the existence of a metastable ferroelectric phase at compressive strain with unexpected in-plane polarization. Symmetry analysis indicates that two distortion modes at the X point combine to induce the polarization, leading to characterization as a hybrid improper ferroelectric. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for improper ferroelectricity in simple perovskites without the need for symmetry lowering by layering or cation ordering.
Epitaxial orthorhombic Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) films on La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) electrodes show robust ferroelectricity, with high polarization, endurance and retention. However, no similar results have been achieved using other perovskite electrodes so far. Here, LSMO and other perovskite electrodes are compared. A small amount of orthorhombic phase and low polarization is found in HZO films grown on La-doped BaSnO3 and Nb-doped SrTiO3, while null amounts of orthorhombic phase and polarization are detected in films on LaNiO3 and SrRuO3. The critical effect of the electrode on the stabilized phases…
Pressure induced phase transitions of MIAgIIF3 perovskites where M = K, Rb, Cs, have been predicted theoretically for the first time for pressures up to 100 GPa. The sequence of phase transitions for M = K and Rb consists of an orthorhombic to monoclinic and back to orthorhombic transition, associated with progressive bending of infinite chains of corner sharing [AgF6]4 minus octahedra and their mutual approaching via secondary Ag...F contacts. In stark contrast, only a single phase transition i.e. tetragonal to triclinic, is predicted for CsAgF3, associated with substantial deformation of the…
We report on near normal far- and mid-infrared emission and reflectivity of NdMnO3 perovskite from room temperature to sample decomposition above 1800 K. At 300 K the number infrared active phonons is in close agreement with the 25 calculated for the orthorhombic D2h16-Pbnm (Z=4) space group. Their number gradually decreases as we approach the temperature of orbital disorder at ~1023 K where the orthorhombic O' lower temperature cooperative phase coexists with the cubic orthorhombic O. At above ~1200 K, the three infrared active phonons coincide with the expected for cubic Pm-3m (Z=1) in the h…
We present a systematic study of the effect of Y doping and hydration level on the structural transformations of BaCeO3 based on anelastic spectroscopy experiments. The temperature of the intermediate transformation between rhombohedral and orthorhombic Imma phases rises with increasing the molar fraction x of Y roughly as (500 K)x in the hydrated state, and is depressed of more than twice that amount after complete dehydration. This is explained in terms of the effect of doping on the average (Ce/Y)-O and Ba-O bond lengths, and of lattice relaxation from O vacancies. The different behavior of…
We have observed enhancement and shift in the spin reorientation transition temperature as a consequence of coexistence of orthorhombic and hexagonal phases and higher aspect ratio in nanoscale LuFeO3. Nanoparticles and nanofibers of LuFeO3 are considered for this work. Nanoparticles have 75 % orthorhombic phase and 25 % hexagonal phase, while nanofibers have 23% orthorhombic phase and 77%-hexagonal phase. Larger aspect ratio in case of nanofibers is seen to help strain-stabilize the hexagonal phase in the material. Magnetic measurements show significant difference in the magnetic behavior and…

Microscopic pathways of structural phase transitions are difficult to probe because they occur over multiple, disparate time and length scales. Using $in$ $situ$ nanoscale cathodoluminescence microscopy, we visualize the thermally-driven transition to the perovskite phase in hundreds of non-perovskite phase nanowires, resolving the initial nanoscale nucleation and subsequent mesoscale growth and quantifying the activation energy for phase propagation. In combination with molecular dynamics computer simulations, we reveal that the transformation does not follow a simple martensitic mechanism, a…

We systematically synthesized perovskite-type oxides Sr1-xCaxCoO3 containing unusually high valence Co4+ ions by a high pressure technique, and investigated the effect of systematic lattice change on the magnetic and electronic properties. As the Ca content x exceeds about 0.6, the structure changes from cubic to orthorhombic, which is supported by the first-principles calculations of enthalpy. Upon the orthorhombic distortion, the ground state remains to be apparently ferromagnetic with a slight drop of the Curie temperature. Importantly, the compounds with x larger than 0.8 show antiferromag…
