We report on the CrFeTi$_2$O$_7$ (CFTO) system using a combination of x-ray diffraction, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat and neutron diffraction measurements. CFTO is seen to crystallize in a monoclinic $P21/a$ symmetry. It shows a glassy freezing at $T{_f}$ ~ 22 K, characterized by the observation of bifurcation between ZFC and FC $χ$ (T) curves, frequency dispersion across $T{_f}$ in ac susceptibility, appearance of non-zero remanent magnetization and coercivity below $T{_f}$, very slow relaxation of iso-thermal remanent magnetization with time and a linear temperature dependence of magnetic contribution to specific heat $C{_m}$ below $T{_f}$. The microscopic neutron diffraction analysis of CFTO not only confirms the absence of long-range antiferromagnetic ordering but also exhibits diffuse scattering due to the presence of shortrange ordered antiferromagnetically correlated spin clusters.
Specific heat measurements in zero magnetic field are presented on a homologous series of geometrically frustrated, antiferromagnetic, Heisenberg garnet systems. Measurements of Gd3Ga5O12, grown with isotopically pure Gd, agree well with previous results on samples with naturally abundant Gd, showing no ordering features. In contrast, samples of Gd3Te2Li3O12 and Gd3Al5O12 are found to exhibit clear ordering transitions at 243 mK and 175 mK respectively. The effects of low level disorder are studied through dilution of Gd3+ with non-magnetic Y3+ in Gd3Te2Li3O12. A thorough structural characteri…
We report the first experimental evidence of a magnetic phase arising due to the thermal blocking of antiferromagnetic clusters in the weakened charge and orbital ordered system Pr{_0.5}Ca{_0.5}Mn{_0.975}Al{_0.025}O{_3}. The third order susceptibility (χ_3) is used to differentiate this transition from a spin or cluster glass like freezing mechanism. These clusters are found to be mesoscopic and robust to electronic phase separation which only enriches the antiphase domain walls with holes at the cost of the bulk, without changing the size of these clusters. This implies that Al substitution p…
An antiferromagnetic Hund coupling in multiorbital Hubbard systems induces orbital freezing and an associated superconducting instability, as well as unique composite orders in the case of an odd number of orbitals. While the rich phase diagram of the half-filled three-orbital model has recently been explored in detail, the properties of the doped system remain to be clarified. Here, we complement the previous studies by computing the entropy of the half-filled model, which exhibits an increase in the orbital-frozen region, and a suppression in the composite ordered phase. The doping dependent…
We report the properties of a triangular lattice iron-chalcogenide antiferromagnet FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$. The spin susceptibility reveals a significant antiferromagnetic interaction with a Curie-Weiss temperature Θ$_{CW}$ ~ -200K and a spin-2 local moment. Despite a large spin and a large |Θ$_{CW}$|, the low-temperature behaviors are incompatible with conventional classical magnets. No long-range order is detected down to 0.4K. Similar to the well-known spin-1 magnet NiGa$_{2}$S$_{4}$, the specific heat of FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$ exhibits an unusual double-peak structure and a T$^{2}$ power law at low…
We report the results of dc and ac magnetization measurements as a function of temperature (1.8 - 300 K) for the spin chain compound, Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$, which has been recently reported to exhibit a partially disordered antiferromagnetic (PDAF) structure in the range 30 - 90 K and spin-glass freezing below 30 K. We observe an unexpectedly large frequency dependence of ac susceptibility in the T range 30 - 90 K, typical of superparamagnets. In addition, we find that there is no difference in the isothermal remanent magnetization behavior for the two regimes below 90 K. These findings call for mor…
Specific heat measurements were carried out on the closely related spin-chain oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6. Both compounds consist of Ising magnetic chains that are arranged on a triangular lattice. The spin coupling along and between the chains are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. Geometrical frustration is expected from the combination of these magnetic features. The present study reports that the specific heat data of these compounds exhibit similarities in the spin-freezing process at low T, whereas striking differences exist in the antiferromagnetic interchain ordering …
A spin-glass compound, La$_{1.98}$Sr$_{0.02}$CuO$_4$, shows quasi-three-dimensional magnetic ordering below $\sim$40 K. A remarkable feature is that the magnetic correlation length along the orthorhombic $a\rm_{ortho}$ axis is much longer than that along the $b\rm_{ortho}$ axis, suggesting that the spin structure is closely related to the diagonal stripe structure. The spin-glass state can be expressed as a random freezing of quasi-three-dimensional spin clusters with anisotropic spin correlations ($ξ'_a\sim160$ Å, $ξ'_b\sim25$ Å, and $ξ'_c\sim4.7$ Åat 1.6 K). The new magnetic state is importa…
Resistivity, magnetization and microscopic $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of the iron-based superconductor parent material CaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibit anomalous features that are consistent with the collective freezing of domain walls. Below $T^*\approx 10$ K, the resistivity exhibits a peak and downturn, the bulk magnetization exhibits a sharp increase, and $^{75}$As NMR measurements reveal the presence of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field. These features in both the charge and spin response are strongly field dependent, ar…
The results of ac and dc magnetization and heat capacity measurements on the oxides, Ca$_3$Co$_{1+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$O$_6$, forming in a K$_4$CdCl$_6$-derived rhombohedral quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure, are reported. As far as Ca$_3$Co$_2$O$_6$ is concerned, the results reveal truly complex nature of the two magnetic transitions, identified to set in at 24 and 12 K in the previous literature. However, partial replacement of Co by Mn apparently results in a long magnetic ordering of an antiferromagnetic type (below 13 and 18 K for x= 0.0 and 0.25 respectively), instead of spin-glass freezin…
We present the results of neutron diffraction studies on polycrystals of a metallic kagome lattice, Tb3Ru4Al12, reported recently to undergo reentrant magnetism, with the onset of long range antiferromagnetic order below (TN=) 22 K and spin-glass features below about 17 K. The present results reveal long-range antiferromagnetic order of an incommensurate type with the moments oriented along c-axis at all temperatures below TN. There are however notable changes in the T dependence of propagation vector along b-axis across 17 K. An observation of interest is that there is no decrease of intensit…
The interplay between geometric frustration (GF) and bond disorder is studied in the Ising kagome lattice within a cluster approach. The model considers antiferromagnetic (AF) short-range couplings and long-range intercluster disordered interactions. The replica formalism is used to obtain an effective single cluster model from where the thermodynamics is analyzed by exact diagonalization. We found that the presence of GF can introduce cluster freezing at very low levels of disorder. The system exhibits an entropy plateau followed by a large entropy drop close to the freezing temperature. In t…
(Sr1-xCax)3Ru2O7 is characterized by complex magnetic states, spanning from a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state over an unusual heavy-mass nearly ferromagnetic (NFM) state to an itinerant metamagnetic (IMM) state. The NFM state, which occurs in the 0.4 > x > 0.08 composition range, freezes into a cluster-spin-glass (CSG) phase at low temperatures [Z. Qu et al., Phys. Rev. B 78, 180407(R) (2008)]. In this article, we present the scaling analyses of magnetization and the specific heat for (Sr1-xCax)3Ru2O7 in the 0.4 > x > 0.08 composition range. We find that in a temperature region …

We report synthesis and magnetization of Sr2RuREO6 (RE/Ru-211O6) with RE = Gd and Eu. Both Gd,Eu/Ru-211O6 are formed in distorted perovskite-type single phase with monoclinic P21/n space group. Magnetization (M/T) measurements exhibited antiferromagnetic ordering of Ru moments for both Gd and Eu compounds at TN of around 30 K due to super-exchange Ru-O-O-Ru interaction. Interestingly enough, detailed M/H plots of Gd/Ru-211O6 exhibited, the development of a ferromagnetic (FM) component at 20 K. Further at below 10 K, the FM component disappears and rather an spin freezing field (HSF) of around …
We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of a new cubic spinel LiZn$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$ (LZVO) through x-ray diffraction, dc and ac susceptibility, magnetic relaxation, aging, memory effect, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. A Curie-Weiss fit of the dc susceptibility $χ_{\mathrm{dc}}$($\mathit{T}$) yields a Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrmθ_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -185 K. This suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions among the magnetic vanadium ions. The dc and ac susceptibility data indicate the spin-glass behavior below a freezi…
We present observations of highly frustrated quasi two-dimensional (2D) magnetic correlations in the honeycomb lattice layers of the S$_{eff}$ = 1/2 compound $γ$-BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ ($γ$-BCPO). Specific heat shows a broad peak comprised of two weak kink features at $T_{N1} \sim$ 6 K and $T_{N2} \sim$ 3.5 K, the relative weights of which can be modified by sample annealing. Neutron powder diffraction measurements reveal short range quasi-2D order that is established below $T_{N1}$ and $T_{N2}$, at which two separate, incompatible, short range magnetic orders onset: commensurate antiferromagnet…

One-dimensional gapped phases that avoid any symmetry breaking have drawn enduring attention. In this paper, we study such phases in a bond-alternating spin-1 $K$-$Γ$ chain built of a Kitaev ($K$) interaction and an off-diagonal $Γ$ term. In the case of isotropic bond strength, a Haldane phase, which resembles the ground state of a spin-$1$ Heisenberg chain, is identified in a wide region. A gapped Kitaev phase situated at dominant ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev limits is also found. The Kitaev phase has extremely short-range spin correlations and is characterized by finite $\mathb…
The realization of an effective spin (Jeff) 1/2 state at low temperatures offers a platform to study the enthralling physics behind the disordered states in certain systems. Here, we report the signatures of magnetic ground state associated with Jeff = 1/2 in CeVO4. Our studies confirm the absence of any ordering or freezing down to 1.8 K. In the low temperature region, the Curie-Weiss fit of the inverse DC susceptibility indicate towards the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations among the Ce3+ spins. The calculated value of effective moment (~1.16 μ_B) corresponds to J = 1/2 with gJ ~ 1.…
A detailed study of the low-temperature magnetic state and the relaxation in the phase-separated colossal magnetoresistance Nd2/3Ca1/3MnO3 perovskite has been carried out. Clear experimental evidence of the cluster-glass magnetic behavior of this compound has been revealed. Well defined maxima in the in-phase linear ac susceptibility $χ^{/}(T)$ were observed, indicative of the magnetic glass transition at $T_{g}$ = 60 K. Strongly divergent zero-field-cooled and field-cooled static magnetizations and frequency dependent ac susceptibility are evident of the glassy-like magnetic state of the comp…
We present time-of-flight neutron total scattering and polarized neutron scattering measurements of the magnetically frustrated compounds NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$ and NaSrCo$_2$F$_7$, which belong to a class of recently discovered pyrochlore compounds based on transition metals and fluorine. The magnetic pair distribution function (mPDF) technique is used to analyze and model the total scattering data in real space. We find that a previously-proposed model of short-range XY-like correlations with a length scale of 10-15 Å, combined with nearest-neighbor collinear antiferromagnetic correlations, accurat…
We report results of magnetization, specific-heat and muon-spin relaxation measurements on single crystals of disorder-free Yb$^{3+}$ triangular lattice Yb(BaBO$_3$)$_3$. The magnetization experiments show anisotropic magnetic properties with Curie-Weiss temperatures $θ_{\perp}=-1.40$~K ($H \perp c$) and $θ_{\parallel}=-1.16$~K ($H \parallel c$) determined from low temperature data. The absence of both long-range antiferromagnetic order and spin freezing is confirmed down to 0.27 K at zero field. A two-level Schottky anomaly due to the opening of the ground-state Kramers doublet is observed fr…
A systematic study using neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility are reported on Mn substituted ferrimagnetic inverse spinel Ti$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Co$_2$O$_4$ in the temperature interval 1.6 K $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ 300 K. Our neutron diffraction study reveals cooperative distortions of the $T$O$_6$ octahedral for all the Jahn-Teller active ions $T$ = Mn$^{3+}$, Ti$^{3+}$ and Co$^{3+}$, which are confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Two specific compositions ($x$ = 0.2 and 0.4) have been chosen because of their unique features: noncollinear Yafet-Kittel type ordering, and weak tet…
