Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) which is made of two parallel Josephson junctions has applications in magnetometry. A similar spin-based device is proposed here where spin superfluid in ferromagnet (FM) mimics the superconducting state. Two materials CoFeB and Fe3Sn are used for spin superfluid-based SQUID like device where easy plane anisotropy in CoFeB can be engineered and Fe3Sn has inherent easy plane anisotropy. Frequency varies in spin based proposed devices. Frequency increases and again decreases with the increase in both applied magnetic field and applied spin current. The proposed device can be used as nano oscillator and detector. The frequency in the proposed device shows multiple frequency steps which can be used for neuromorphic applications.
The electrical and structural properties of Co40Fe40B20 (CoFeB) alloy are tunable with thermal annealing. This is key in the optimization of CoFeB-based spintronic devices, where the advantageously low magnetic coercivity, high spin polarization, and controllable magnetocrystalline anisotropy are utilised. So far, there has been no report on superconducting devices based on CoFeB. Here, we report Nb/CoFeB/Nb Josephson devices and demonstrate an enhancement of the critical current by up to 700% following thermal annealing due to increased structural ordering of the CoFeB. The results demonstrat…
In this work, we show fundamental low temperature (T) magnetic and Ic responses of a magnetic Josephson Junction (MJJ) S/F/S heterostructure - Nb/ Co56Fe24B20 /Nb. The ultra-thin Co56Fe24B20 (CFB) films (0.6-1.3 nm) were deposited onto two separate buffer layers: 150 nm Nb/5 nm Cu and 150 nm Nb/ (1 nm Cu/0.5 nm Nb)6/1 nm Cu. Both film sets were capped with 5 nm Cu/50 nm Nb. Magnetic results show reduced switching distributions in patterned arrays measured at near liquid Helium temperature (~ 10 K), with the incorporation of the (1 nm Cu/0.5 nm Nb)6/1 nm multilayer. In electrical devices, the c…
The supercurrent transport in metallic Josephson tunnel junctions with an additional interlayer made up by chromium, being an itinerant antiferromagnet, was studied. Uniform Josephson coupling was observed as a function of the magnetic field. The supercurrent shows a weak dependence on the interlayer thickness for thin chromium layers and decays exponentially for thicker films. The diffusion constant and the coherence length in the antiferromagnet were estimated. The antiferromagnetic state of the barrier was indirectly verified using reference samples. Our results are compared to macroscopic …

We predict that the amplitude of the Josephson current through an antiferromagnetic weak link changes by several orders of magnitude upon rotation of the Néel order parameter characterizing the staggered magnetic order. This occurs due the presence of spin-orbit coupling arising from structural inversion asymmetry which makes the band gap in the antiferromagnet highly sensitive to the staggered order parameter direction. We also demonstrate that when phase-biasing the junction, magnetization dynamics is induced which switches the direction of the Néel vector in the antiferromagnet. These resul…
Combining advanced technologies of optics and antiferromagnetic spintronics, we present a method to realize ultrafast spin transport. The optical Barnett effect provokes quasiequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of magnons associated with the fully spin-polarized state in insulating antiferromagnets (AFs). This optomagnonic Barnett effect enables us to exploit coherent magnons of high frequency over the conventional ones of (sub-) terahertz associated with the Néel magnetic order. We show that the macroscopic coherence of those optical magnon BECs induces a spin current across the junc…
The Josephson effect is generally described as Cooper pair tunneling, but it can also be understood in a more general context. The DC Josephson effect is the pseudo-Goldstone boson of two coupled systems with a broken continuous abelian U(1) symmetry. Hence, an analog should exist for systems with broken continuous non-Abelian symmetries. To exhibit the generality of the phenomenon and make predictions from a realistic model, we study tunneling between antiferromagnets and also between antiferromagnetic d-wave superconductors. Performing a calculation analogous to that of Ambegaokar and Barato…
We study the proximity effect in superconductor (S), antiferromagnetic (AF) bilayers, and report the fabrication and measurement of the first trilayer S/AF/S Josephson junctions. The disordered f.c.c. alloy γ-Fe50Mn50 was used as the AF, and the S is Nb. Micron and sub-micron scale junctions were measured, and the scaling of $J_C (d_AF)$ gives a coherence length in the AF of 2.4 nm, which correlates with the coherence length due to suppression of $T_C$ in the bilayer samples. The diffusion constant for FeMn was found to be 1.7 \times 10$^{-4}$ m$^2$ s$^-1$, and the density of states at the Fer…
The development of compact and tunable room temperature sources of coherent THz-frequency signals would open a way for numerous new applications. The existing approaches to THz-frequency generation based on superconductor Josephson junctions (JJ), free electron lasers, and quantum cascades require cryogenic temperatures or/and complex setups, preventing the miniaturization and wide use of these devices. We demonstrate theoretically that a bi-layer of a heavy metal (Pt) and a bi-axial antiferromagnetic (AFM) dielectric (NiO) can be a source of a coherent THz signal. A spin-current flowing from …
We calculate the dc supercurrent through a Josephson tunnel junction consisting of an antiferromagnetic (AF) interlayer sandwiched between two d-wave superconductors (d). Such d/AF/d junctions exhibit a rich dependence of the Josephson current on the interlayer parameters, including the possibility of 0-pi transitions with varying temperature or interlayer thickness. Furthermore, we study d/I/d junctions when the dSC leads include subdominant magnetic correlations. In this case induced magnetism near the interface can strongly diminish the critical current for 110 oriented junctions whereas no…
We show that the critical behavior of quantum systems undergoing a percolation transition is dramatically affected by their topological Berry phase $2πρ$. For irrational $ρ$, we demonstrate that the low-energy excitations of diluted Josephson-junctions arrays, quantum antiferromagnets, and interacting bosons are spinless fermions with fractal spectrum. As a result, critical properties not captured by the usual Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson description of phase transitions emerge, such as complex critical exponents, log-periodic oscillations and dynamically broken scale-invariance.
We show that the dc Josephson current through superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor (S/AF/S) junctions manifests a remarkable atomic scale dependence on the interlayer thickness. At low temperatures the junction is either a 0- or pi-junction depending on whether the AF interlayer consists of an even or odd number of atomic layers. This is associated with different symmetries of the AF interlayers in the two cases. In the junction with odd AF interlayers an additional pi-0 transition can take place as a function of temperature. This originates from the interplay of spin-split Andreev bo…

The anomalous ground state phase shift in S/AF/S Josephson junctions in the presence of the Rashba SO-coupling is predicted and numerically investigated. It is found to be a consequence of the uncompensated magnetic moment at the S/AF interfaces. The anomalous phase shift exhibits a strong dependence on the value of the SO-coupling and the sublattice magnetization with the simultaneous existence of stable and metastable branches. It depends strongly on the orientation of the Neel vector with respect to the S/AF interfaces via the dependence on the orientation of the interface uncompensated mag…
We report measurements of the critical current vs. Co thickness in Nb/Cu/Co/Ru/Co/Cu/Nb Josephson junctions, where the inner Co/Ru/Co trilayer is a "synthetic antiferromagnet" with the magnetizations of the two Co layers coupled antiparallel to each other via the 0.6 nm-thick Ru layer. Due to the antiparallel magnetization alignment, the net intrinsic magnetic flux in the junction is nearly zero, and such junctions exhibit excellent Fraunhofer patterns in the critical current vs. applied magnetic field, even with total Co thicknesses as large as 23 nm. There are no apparent oscillations in the…
We study Josephson-like junctions formed by materials with antiferromagnetic (AF) order parameters. As an antiferromagnet, we consider a two-band material in which a spin density wave (SDW) arises. This could be Fe-based pnictides in the temperature interval ${T_{\text{c}}\leq T\leq T_{N}}$, where $T_{c}$ and $T_{N}$ are the critical temperatures for the superconducting and antiferromagnetic transitions, respectively. The spin current $j_{\text{Sp}}$ in AF/F/AF junctions with a ballistic ferromagnetic layer and in tunnel AF/I/AF junctions is calculated. It depends on the angle between the magn…
We compute self-consistently the Josephson current in a superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor junction using a lattice model, focusing on $0-π$ transitions occurring when the width of the antiferromagnetic region changes from an even to an odd number of lattice sites. Previous studies predicted $0-π$ transitions when alternating between an even and an odd number of sites for sufficiently strong antiferromagnetic order. We study numerically the magnitude of the threshold value for this to occur, and also explain the physics behind its existence in terms of the phase-shifts picked up by …
We propose a mechanism for high critical temperature (T_c) in the coexistent phase of superconducting- (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) CuO_2 planes in multilayered cuprates. The Josephson coupling between the SC planes separated by an AF insulator (Mott insulator) is calculated perturbatively up to the fourth order in terms of the hopping integral between adjacent CuO_2 planes. It is shown that the AF exchange splitting in the AF plane suppresses the so-called pi-Josephson coupling, and the long-ranged 0-Josephson coupling leads to coexistence with a rather high value of T_c.
We present measurements of Josephson junctions containing three magnetic layers with noncolinear magnetizations. The junctions are of the form $S/F^{\prime}/N/F/N/F^{\prime \prime}/S$, where $S$ is superconducting Nb, $F^\prime$ is either a thin Ni or Permalloy layer with in-plane magnetization, $N$ is the normal metal Cu, $F$ is a synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) with magnetization perpendicular to the plane, composed of Pd/Co multilayers on either side of a thin Ru spacer, and $F^{\prime \prime}$ is a thin Ni layer with in-plane magnetization. The supercurrent in these junctions decays more s…
A layered antiferromagnetic superconductor in the mixed state may posses magnetic domains created along the Josephson vortices. This may happen when an external magnetic field is strong enough to flip over magnetic moments, lying in the phase core of the Josephson vortex, from their ground state configuration. The formation of the domain structure of the vortices modifies the surface energy barrier of the superconductor. During this process the entrance of the flux is stopped and a newly created state exhibits perfect shielding. Such behavior should be visible as a plateau on the dependence of…
We investigate the thermal transport properties in superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor and superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor junctions based on buckled two-dimensional materials (BTDMs). Owing to the unique buckled sublattice structures of BTDMs, in both junctions the phase dependence of the thermal conductance can be effectively controlled by perpendicular electric fields. The underlying mechanism for the electrical tunability of thermal conductance is elucidated resorting to the band structures of the magnetic regions. We also reveal the distinct manifestations of antiferro…
We derive the qualitative behavior of superconductor-antiferromagnet- superconductor (SAS) Josephson junctions described by Zhang's SO(5) theory. The main differences between these junctions and conventional SIS junctions arise from the non-sinusoidal current-phase relation derived by Demler et al. for thin SAS junctions. Using a simple approximation to this non-sinusoidal function, the current voltage relation, Shapiro steps, thermal fluctuation effects and the diffraction pattern in a magnetic field are obtained.
We consider proximity effect coupling in Superconducting/Antiferromagnetic/Superconducting (S-A-S) sandwiches using the recently developed SO(5) effective theory of high temperature superconductivity. We find that, for narrow junctions, the A region acts like a strong superconductor, and that there is a critical junction thickness which depends on the effective SO(5) coupling constants and on the phase difference across the junction, at which the A region undergoes a Freedericksz-like transition to a state which is intermediate between superconductor and antiferromagnet. For thick junctions, t…
A novel time-reversal symmetry breaking state is found theoretically in the Josephson junction between the two-gap superconductor and the conventional s-wave superconductor. This occurs due to the frustration between the three order parameters analogous to the two antiferromagnetically coupled XY-spins put under a magnetic field. This leads to the interface states with the energies inside the superconducting gap. Possible experimental observations of this state with broken time-reversal symmetry are discussed.
We study numerically and analytically the properties of a one-dimensional array of parallel Josephson junctions in which every {\em alternate} junction is a $π$ junction. In the ground state of the array, each cell contains spontaneous magnetic flux $Φ\leqΦ_{0}/2$ which shows {\em antiferromagnetic} ordering along the array. We find that an externally introduced $2π$-fluxon $Φ_{0}$ in such an array is unstable and fractionalizes into two $π$ fluxons of magnitude ${1/2}Φ_{0}$. We attribute this fractionalization to the degeneracy of the ground state of the array. The magnitude of the flux in th…
We study a double quantum dot each dot of which is tunnel-coupled to superconducting leads. In the Coulomb blockade regime, a spin-dependent Josephson coupling between two superconductors is induced, as well as an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange coupling between the spins on the double dot which can be tuned by the superconducting phase difference. We show that the correlated spin states-singlet or triplets-on the double dot can be probed via the Josephson current in a dc-SQUID setup.
We apply a Gutzwiller-like variational technique to study Josephson conduction across a quantum dot with an odd number of electrons connected to two superconducting leads. Our method projects out all states on the dot but the Kondo singlet and is valid when Kondo correlations are dominant and no Andreev bound states localized at the dot are available for Kondo screening. In these conditions superconducting pairing is a competing effect and the junction is $π-$like, to optimize antiferromagnetic correlations on the dot. As the superconducting gap increases, the Josephson current also increases,…
We analyze the magnetic and transport properties of a double quantum dot coupled to superconducting leads. In addition to the possible phase transition to a $π$ state, already present in the single dot case, this system exhibits a richer magnetic behavior due to the competition between Kondo and inter-dot antiferromagnetic coupling. We obtain results for the Josephson current which may help to understand recent experiments on superconductor-metallofullerene dimer junctions. We show that in such a system the Josephson effect can be used to control its magnetic configuration.
We study the transport properties of a Josephson junction consisting of two identical $s$-wave superconductors separated by an even-layer ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ (MBT). Using recursive Green's function method, we calculate the supercurrent in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and find that its quantum interference exhibits distinct patterns when the MBT is in different magnetic states. In the antiferromagnetic state, the MBT is an axion insulator supporting an extended "hinge" supercurrent, which leads to a sinusoidal interference pattern decaying with the field str…
Josephson junctions containing ferromagnetic materials are generating interest for use in superconducting electronics and cryogenic memory. Optimizing the performance of such junctions is an ongoing effort, requiring exploration of a broad range of magnetic systems. Here we study supercurrent transmission through Ni/Ru/Ni synthetic antiferromagnets, with the idea that their magnetic properties may be superior to those of isolated Ni layers. We find that the decay of the supercurrent as a function of Ni thickness is very slow, with a decay length of 7.5 $\pm$ 0.8 nm. We also characterize the ma…
We have demonstrated strong antiferromagnetic coupling between two three-junction flux qubits based on a shared Josephson junction, and therefore not limited by the small inductances of the qubit loops. The coupling sign and magnitude were measured by coupling the system to a high-quality superconducting tank circuit. Design modifications allowing to continuously tune the coupling strength and/or make the coupling ferromagnetic are discussed.
Spectra and spin structures of Andreev interface states and the Josephson current are investigated theoretically in junctions between clean superconductors (SC) with ordered interlayers. The Josephson current through the ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet interlayer can exhibit a nonmonotonic dependence on the misorientation angle. The characteristic behavior takes place if the pi state is the equilibrium state of the junction in the particular case of parallel magnetizations. We find a novel channel of quasiparticle reflection (Q reflection) from the simplest two-sublattice antiferromagnet (AF…
We present an analytic expression for the finite temperature sublattice magnetization, at the Josephson scale, in two dimensional quantum antiferromagnets with short range Néel order. Our expression is able to reproduce both the qualitative behaviour of the phase diagram $M(T)/M_{0}$ and the experimental values of the Néel temperature $T_{N}$ for either doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.15}$ and stoichiometric La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$.
Exerting control of the magnetic exchange interaction in heterostructures is of both basic interest and has potential for use in spin-based applications relying on quantum effects. We here show that the sign of the exchange interaction in a spin-valve, determining whether the ferro- or antiferromagnetic configuration is favored, can be controlled via an electric voltage. This occurs due to an interplay between a nonequilibrium quasiparticle distribution and the presence of spin-polarized Cooper pairs. Additionally, we show that a voltage-induced distribution controls the anomalous supercurrent…
We investigate theoretically the eigenmodes and the stability of one and two arbitrary fractional vortices pinned at one and two $κ$-phase discontinuities in a long Josephson junction. In the particular case of a single $κ$-discontinuity, a vortex is spontaneously created and pinned at the boundary between the 0 and $κ$-regions. In this work we show that only two of four possible vortices are stable. A single vortex has an oscillatory eigenmode with a frequency within the plasma gap. We calculate this eigenfrequency as a function of the fractional flux carried by a vortex. For the case of two …
The ground and first excited state of two superconducting layers in interaction are studied considering two different coupling terms, one represented by the standard Josephson interaction, and one new, which is a superexchange pairing force between bilayer pairs. It is shown that a moderate-to strong Josephson interaction produces a low-lying collective state, pictured as an out-of-phase oscillation of the BCS gauge angles of the two layers. This antisymmetric angular oscillation might explain the 41 meV resonance observed in the neutron scattering experiments. The bilayer pairs are formed by …
The Josephson Effect provides a primary signature of single spin superconductivity (SSS), the as yet unobserved superconducting state which was proposed recently as a low temperature phase of half-metallic antiferromagnets. These materials are insulating in the spin-down channel but are metallic in the spin-up channel. The SSS state is characterized by a unique form of p-wave pairing within a single spin channel. We develop the theory of a rich variety of Josephson effects that arise due to the form of the SSS order parameter. Tunneling is allowed at a SSS-SSS' junction but of course depends o…
In 2010, several experimental groups obtained compelling evidence for spin-triplet supercurrent in Josephson junctions containing strong ferromagnetic materials. Our own best results were obtained from large-area junctions containing a thick central Co/Ru/Co "synthetic antiferromagnet" and two thin outer layers made of Ni or PdNi alloy. Because the ferromagnetic layers in our samples are multi-domain, one would expect the sign of the local current-phase relation inside the junctions to vary randomly as a function of lateral position. Here we report measurements of the area dependence of the cr…
In the past year, several groups have observed evidence for long-range spin-triplet supercurrent in Josephson junctions containing ferromagnetic (F) materials. In our work, the spin-triplet pair correlations are created by non-collinear magnetizations between a central Co/Ru/Co "synthetic antiferromagnet" (SAF) and two outer thin F layers. Here we present data showing that the spin-triplet supercurrent is enhanced up to 20 times after our samples are subject to a large in-plane magnetizing field. This surprising result can be explained if the Co/Ru/Co SAF undergoes a "spin-flop" transition, wh…
We present a theoretical study of the Josephson coupling of two s-wave superconductors which are connected through a diffusive contact consisting of noncollinear ferromagnetic domains. First, we consider a contact with two domains with magnetization vectors misoriented by an angle $θ$. Using the quantum circuit theory, we find that in addition to the charge supercurrent, a spin supercurrent, which is even in $ϕ$ and odd in $θ$, with a spin polarization normal to the magnetization vectors flows between the domains. Furthermore, with asymmetric insulating barriers at the interfaces of the juncti…
Josephson junctions containing three ferromagnetic layers with non-collinear magnetizations between adjacent layers carry spin-triplet supercurrent under certain conditions. The signature of the spin-triplet supercurrent is a relatively slow decay of the maximum supercurrent as a function of the thickness of the middle ferromagnetic layer. In this work we focus on junctions where the middle magnetic layer is a [Co/Pd]$_N$ multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), while the outer two layers have in-plane anisotropy. We compare junctions where the middle PMA layer is or is not con…
We report an in-plane optical spectroscopy study on the iron-selenide superconductor K$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.75}$Se$_2$. The measurement revealed the development of a sharp reflectance edge below T$_c$ at frequency much smaller than the superconducting energy gap on a relatively incoherent electronic background, a phenomenon which was not seen in any other Fe-based superconductors so far investigated. Furthermore, the feature could be noticeably suppressed and shifted to lower frequency by a moderate magnetic field. Our analysis indicates that this edge structure arises from the development of a Jose…
Spin-torque-biased magnetic dynamics in an easy-plane ferromagnet (EPF) is theoretically studied in the presence of a weak in-plane anisotropy. While this anisotropy spoils U(1) symmetry thereby quenching the conventional spin superfluidity, we show that the system instead realizes a close analog of a long Josephson junction (LJJ) model. The traditional magnetic-field and electric-current controls of the latter map respectively onto the symmetric and antisymmetric combinations of the out-of-plane spin torques applied at the ends of the magnetic strip. This suggests an alternative route towards…
We propose the model for magnetic properties of the magnetic superconductor RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$, which incorporates the theory of the superconducting/ferromagnetic multilayers. The transition line $T_{d}(h)$, on which the Josephson coupled superconducting planes are decoupled, i.e. $% j_{c}(T_{d})=0$, is calculated as a function of the exchange energy $h$. As the result of this decoupling a nonmonotonic behavior of magnetic properties, like the lower critical field $H_{c1}$, Josephson plasma frequency, etc. is realized near (or by crossing) the $T_{d}(h)$ line. The obtained results are…

We calculate the critical current of a superconductor/ferromagnetic/superconductor (S/FM/S) Josephson junction in which the FM layer has a conical magnetic structure composed of an in-plane rotating antiferromagnetic phase and an out-of-plane ferromagnetic component. In view of the realistic electronic properties and magnetic structures that can be formed when conical magnets such as Ho are grown with a polycrystalline structure in thin-film form by methods such as direct current sputtering and evaporation, we have modeled this situation in the dirty limit with a large magnetic coherence lengt…
