Shock boundary layers are regions bounded by a shock wave on the one side and tangential discontinuity on the other side. These boundary layers are commonly observed in astrophysics. For example, they exist in the regions of the interaction of the stellar winds with the surrounding interstellar medium. Additionally, the shock layers are often penetrated by the flows of interstellar atoms, as, for instance, in the astrospheres of the stars embedded by the partially ionized interstellar clouds. This paper presents a simple toy model of a shock layer that aims to qualitatively describe the influence of charge exchange with interstellar hydrogen atoms on the plasma flow in astrospheric shock layers. To clearly explore this effect, magnetic fields are neglected, and the geometry is kept as simple as possible. The model explains why the cooling of plasma due to charge exchange in the inner heliosheath leads to an increase in plasma density in front of the heliopause. It also demonstrates that the source of momentum causes changes in the pressure profile within the shock layer. The paper also discusses the decrease in plasma density near the astropause in the outer shock layer in the case of layer heating, which is particularly relevant in light of the Voyager measurements in the heliospheric shock layer.
We report "ground truth", 28-3500 keV in-situ ion and 5.2-55 keV remotely sensed ENA measurements from Voyager 2/Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) detector and Cassini/Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA), respectively, that assess the components of the ion pressure in the heliosheath. In this process, we predict an interstellar neutral hydrogen density of ~0.12 cm-3 and an interstellar magnetic field strength of ~0.5 nT upstream of the heliopause in the direction of V2, i.e. consistent with the measured magnetic field and neutral density measurements at Voyager 1 from August 2012, when the spacecra…
Traditionally, the solar magnetic field has been considered to have a negligible effect in the outer regions of the heliosphere. Recent works have shown that the solar magnetic field may play a crucial role in collimating the plasma in the heliosheath. Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) observations of the heliotail indicated a latitudinal structure varying with energy in the energetic neutral atom (ENA) fluxes. At energies ~1 keV, the ENA fluxes show an enhancement at low latitudes and a deficit of ENAs near the poles. At energies >2.7 keV, ENA fluxes had a deficit within low latitudes, an…
We study the behaviour of shocked wind-electrons leaving wind-driving stars after undergoing the outer wind termination shock. As an example, we describe the evolution of the keV-energetic electron distribution function downstream of the heliospheric termination shock. We start from a kinetic transport equation in the bulk frame of the heliosheath plasma flow taking into account shock-induced electron injection, convective changes, cooling processes, and whistler wave-induced energy diffusion. From this equation we proceed to an associated pressure moment of the electron distribution function …
We simulated the signal due to neutral He atoms, observed by Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX), assuming that charge exchange collisions between neutral He atoms and He+ ions operate everywhere between the heliopause and a distant source region in the local interstellar cloud, where the neutral and charged components are in thermal equilibrium. We simulated several test cases of the plasma flow within the outer heliosheath and investigated the signal generation for plasma flows both in the absence and in the presence of the interstellar magnetic field. We found that a signal in the portion…
A recent study by Opher et al. (2015) suggested the heliosphere has a "croissant" shape, where the heliosheath plasma is confined by the toroidal solar magnetic field. The "croissant" heliosphere is in contrast to the classically accepted view of a comet-like tail. We investigate the effect of the "croissant" heliosphere model on energetic neutral atom (ENA) maps. Regardless of the existence of a split tail, the confinement of the heliosheath plasma should appear in ENA maps. ENA maps from the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) have shown two high latitude lobes with excess ENA flux at high…
We derive an exact, time-dependent analytical magnetic field solution for the inner heliosheath, which satisfies both the induction equation of ideal magnetohydrodynamics in the limit of infinite electric conductivity and the magnetic divergence constraint. To this end, we assume that the magnetic field is frozen into a plasma flow resembling the characteristic interaction of the solar wind with the local interstellar medium. Furthermore, we make use of the ideal Ohm's law for the magnetic vector potential and the electric scalar potential. By employing a suitable gauge condition that relates …
Voyager 1 and 2 crossed the heliopause at $\sim$122 AU in 2012 and $\sim$119 AU in 2018, respectively. It was quite a surprise because the thickness of the inner heliosheath obtained by the existing at that time models of the global heliosphere was significantly larger (by 20-40 AU). Until now, the problem of the heliosheath thickness has not been fully resolved. Earlier in the frame of an oversimplified toy model of nearly isothermal solar wind plasma it has been shown that the effect of electron thermal conduction may significantly reduce the thickness of the inner heliosheath. In this paper…
Interaction of the solar wind with interstellar matter involves, among other, charge exchange between interstellar neutral atoms and plasma, which results in the creation of secondary population of interstellar neutral (ISN) atoms. The secondary population of interstellar He was detected by Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX), but interpretation of these measurements was mostly based on an approximation that the primary interstellar neutral population and the secondary population were non-interacting homogeneous Maxwell-Boltzmann functions in the outer heliosheath. We simulate the distributi…
In mid-2012, a GMIR observed by Voyager 2 crossed through the heliosheath and collided with the heliopause, generating a pressure pulse that propagated into the very local interstellar medium. The effects of the transmitted wave were seen by Voyager 1 just 93 days after its own heliopause crossing. The passage of the transient was accompanied by long-lasting decreases in galactic cosmic ray intensities that occurred from ~2012.55 to ~2013.35 and ~2012.91 to ~2013.70 at Voyager 2 and Voyager 1, respectively. Omnidirectional (>20 MeV) proton-dominated measurements from each spacecraft's Cosmic R…
The understanding of inertial-scale dynamics in the heliosheath is not yet thorough. Magnetic field fluctuations across the inner heliosheath (IHS) and the local interstellar medium (LISM) are here considered to provide accurate and highly resolved statistics over different plasma conditions between 88 and 136 au. By using the unique in situ 48 s measurements from the Voyager Interstellar Mission, we investigate different fluctuation regimes at the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) scales, down to the MHD-to-kinetic transition. We focus on a range of scales exceeding five frequency decades (5 x 10-8 <…
Solar wind He pickup ions as source of tens-of-keV/n neutral He atoms observed by the HSTOF/SOHO detector

Interstellar neutral hydrogen (ISN H) gas penetrates freely the heliopause. Inside the inner heliosheath, the charge-exchange interaction of this gas with the shocked solar wind and pickup ions creates energetic neutral atoms (ENAs). ISN H is strongly depleted inside the termination shock but a fraction reaches the Earth's orbit. In these regions of the heliosphere, ISN H is the source population for interstellar pickup ions and for the heliospheric backscatter glow. The Globally Distributed Flux (GDF) of ENAs created in the inner heliosheath has been sampled directly by Interstellar Boundary …
The heliosphere is formed due to interaction between the solar wind (SW) and local interstellar medium (LISM). The shape and position of the heliospheric boundary, the heliopause, in space depend on the parameters of interacting plasma flows. The interplay between the asymmetrizing effect of the interstellar magnetic field and charge exchange between ions and neutral atoms plays an important role in the SW-LISM interaction. By performing three-dimensional, MHD plasma / kinetic neutral atom simulations, we determine the width of the outer heliosheath - the LISM plasma region affected by the pre…
Dynamics of the Upwind Heliosphere Due to Data-Driven, Solar Wind and Magnetic Field Variations and Implications for Wave Propagation into the Very Local Interstellar Medium
Boston University(波士顿大学);Southwest Research Institute(西南研究院);Massachusetts Institute of Technology(麻省理工学院)
Analysis of data from the Interstellar Boundary EXplorer (IBEX) has revealed the presence of a flow of neutral helium through the inner solar system that most likely emanates from the outer heliosheath, where a distinct population of neutral He is produced by charge exchange processes. This secondary He flow has been modeled using codes designed to study interstellar flows through the heliosphere, but a laminar flow is not a good approximation for the outer heliosheath. I present a simple parametrization for a more appropriate divergent flow, and demonstrate how the secondary He particles migh…
Interstellar neutral atoms provide a remote diagnostic of plasma in the outer heliosheath and the very local interstellar medium via charge exchange collisions that convert ions into atoms and vice versa. So far, most studies of interstellar atoms assumed that daughter hydrogen atoms directly inherit the kinetic properties of parent protons. This assumption neglects angular scattering of the interacting particles. However, for low relative velocities, as expected for charge exchanges in the outer heliosheath, this scattering is significant. In this study, we present how the parameters of daugh…
Models play an important role in our understanding of the global structure of the solar wind and its interaction with the interstellar medium. A critical ingredient in many types of models are the charge-exchange collisions between ions and neutrals. Some ambiguity exists in the charge-exchange cross-section for protons and hydrogen atoms, depending on which experimental data is used. The differences are greatest at low energies, and for the plasma-neutral interaction in the outer heliosheath may exceed 50\%. In this paper we assess a number of existing data sets and formulae for proton-hydrog…
We discuss the possibility that the observed low-order multipole features of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) all originate in the termination shock (TS) region of the heliosheath that surrounds the solar system. If the intrinsic CMB spectrum is assumed to be a pure monopole (2.73K) then thermodynamic processes occurring within the plasma region of the TS could imprint the observed power spectrum of the low-order multipoles and their alignment (the so-called "axis of evil") onto this background isotropic CMB. Conditions are outlined for the geometric shape of the TS region. A ke…
Pickup ions are created when interstellar neutral atoms resonantly exchange charge with the solar wind (SW) ions, especially in the supersonic part of the wind, where they carry most of the plasma pressure. Here we present numerical simulation results of the 3D heliospheric interface treating pickup ions as a separate proton fluid. To satisfy the fundamental conservation laws, we solve the system of equations describing the flow of the mixture of electrons, thermal protons, and pickup ions. To find the density and pressure of pickup ions behind the termination shock, we employ simple boundary …
We present a simplified model of the outer heliosheath to help interpret the observations of interstellar neutral helium by the IBEX-Lo instruments. We assume that the measured particles are composed of the superposition of a primary beam population, with the properties of the local interstellar medium, and a secondary population, created by charge exchange between the primary beam neutrals and the ions that have been deflected as they approach the heliopause. We extract information on the large-scale shape of the heliopause by comparing the helium flux measured at IBEX along four different lo…
Electromagnetic Energy Conversion in Downstream Fronts from 3D Kinetic Reconnection
