We study the exciton condensation in the heterostructures where the electron layer and hole layer formed by gapped chiral Fermion (GCF) systems are separately gated. High-angular momentum such as p- and d-wave like excitonic pairing may emerge when the gap of the GCF systems is small compared to the Fermi energy, and the chiral winding number of the electrons and holes are the same. This is a result of the non-trivial band geometry and can be linked to the Berry curvature when projected onto the Fermi surface. In realistic systems, we propose that staggered graphene and magnetic topological surface states are promising candidates for realizing p-wave exciton superfluid, and anomalous Hall conductivity can be used as a signature in experiments.
Spin-charge conversion by inverse spin Hall effect or inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect is prevalent in spintronics but dissipative. We propose a dissipationless spin-charge conversion mechanism by an excitonic pseudospin superfluid in an electron-hole double layer system. Magnetic exchange fields lift singlet-triplet degeneracy of interlayer exciton levels in the double layer system. Condensation of the singlet-triplet hybridized excitons breaks both a U(1) gauge symmetry and a pseudospin rotational symmetry around the fields, leading to spin-charge coupled superflow in the system. We demonstra…
The Andreev-Bashkin effect, or superfluid drag, is predicted in a system of Bose-condensed excitonic polaritons in optical microcavity coupled by electron-exciton interaction with a superconducting layer. Two possible setups with spatially indirect dipole excitons or direct excitons are considered. The drag density characterizing a magnitude of this effect is found by many-body calculations with taking into account dynamical screening of electron-exciton interaction. For the superconducting electronic layer, we assume the recently proposed polaritonic mechanism of Cooper pairing, although the …
Excitons are spin integer particles that are predicted to condense into a coherent quantum state at sufficiently low temperature, and exciton condensates can be realized at much higher temperature than condensates of atoms because of strong Coulomb binding and small mass. Signatures of exciton condensation have been reported in double quantum wells1-4, microcavities5, graphene6, and transition metal dichalcogenides7. Nonetheless, transport of exciton condensates is not yet understood and it is unclear whether an exciton condensate is a superfluid8,9 or an insulating electronic crystal10,11. To…
We develop a theory of the excitonic phase recently proposed as the zero-field insulating state observed near charge neutrality in monolayer WTe$_2$. Using a Hartree-Fock approximation, we numerically identify two distinct gapped excitonic phases: a spin density wave state for weak non-zero interaction strength and spin spiral order at stronger interactions, separated by a narrow window of non-excitonic quantum spin Hall insulator. We introduce a simplified model capturing key features of the WTe$_2$ band structure, in which these phases appear as distinct valley ferromagnetic orders. We link …
Superfluidity has recently been reported in double electron-hole bilayer graphene. The multiband nature of the bilayers is important because of the very small band gaps between conduction and valence bands. The long range nature of the superfluid pairing interaction means that screening must be fully taken into account. We have carried out a systematic mean-field investigation that includes (i) contributions to screening from both intraband and interband excitations, (ii) the low-energy band structure of bilayer graphene with its small band gap and flattened Mexican hat-like low-energy bands, …
The nonequilibrium excitonic insulator (NEQ-EI) is an excited state of matter characterized by a finite density of coherent excitons and a time-dependent macroscopic polarization. The stability of this exciton superfluid as the density grows is jeopardized by the increased screening efficiency of the looser excitons. In this work we put forward a Hartree plus Screened Exchange HSEX scheme to predict the critical density at which the transition toward a free electron-hole plasma occurs. The dielectric function is calculated self-consistently using the NEQ-EI polarization and found to vanish in …
Excitonic superfluidity in double phosphorene monolayers is investigated using the BCS mean-field equations. Highly anisotropic superfluidity is predicted where we found that the maximum superfluid gap is in the BEC regime along the armchair direction and in the BCS-BEC crossover regime along the zigzag direction. We estimate the highest Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature with maximum value up to $\sim 90$ K with onset carrier densities as high as $4 \times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. This transition temperature is significantly larger than what is found in double electron-hole few-layers of g…
We study analytically an analog of the Andreev reflection at a normal-superfluid interface. The polariton gapped superfluid region is achieved by quasi-resonant optical pumping. The interacting polaritons are described with the driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find analytical formulas for the angles and amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted particles. There are limit angles and energies, above which Andreev reflection/transmission cannot be observed anymore and where the Andreev wave becomes a surface mode, exponentially localized on the interface. These properties are co…

We consider quantum phase transitions in a system of bright dipolar excitons which can form bound pairs (dipolar biexcitons). We assume a narrow resonance in the interaction of excitons with opposite spins. At sufficiently large density a resonant exciton superfluid transforms into a superfluid of biexcitons. The transition may be either of the first or the second kind. The average relative momenta of excitons in the pairs being beyond the light cone, the transition should be accompanied by reduction of the photoluminescence intensity. Effective magnetic fields due to the long-range exchange s…
Probing Excitonic Dark States in Single-layer Tungsten Disulfide
The nontrivial topology of {\it p}-wave superfluids make these systems attractive candidate in information technology. In this work we report on the topological state of a {\it p}-wave nonequilibrium excitonic insulator (NEQ-EI) and show how to steer a nontopological band-insulator with bright $p$-excitons toward this state by a suitable laser pulse, thus achieving a dynamical topological phase transition. The underlying mechanism behind the transition is the broken gauge-symmetry of the NEQ-EI which causes self-sustained persistent oscillations of the excitonic condensate and hence a Floquet …
Excitonic insulators (EI) arise from the formation of bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) in semiconductors and provide a solid-state platform for quantum many-boson physics. Strong exciton-exciton repulsion is expected to stabilize condensed superfluid and crystalline phases by suppressing both density and phase fluctuations. Although spectroscopic signatures of EIs have been reported, conclusive evidence for strongly correlated EI states has remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate a strongly correlated spatially indirect two-dimensional (2D) EI ground state formed in transition metal dichalc…
In this tutorial we introduce the reader to several theoretical methods of determining the exciton wave functions and the corresponding eigenenergies. The methods covered are either analytical, semi-analytical, or numeric. We make explicit all the details associated with the different methods, thus allowing newcomers to do research on their own, without experiencing a steep learning curve. The tutorial starts with a variational method and ends with a simple semi-analytical approach to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation in two-dimensional (2D) gapped materials. For the first methods addressed in…
A driven-dissipative nonlinear photonic system (e.g. exciton-polaritons) can operate in a gapped superfluid regime. We theoretically demonstrate that the reflection of a linear wave on this superfluid is an analogue of the Andreev reflection of an electron on a superconductor. A normal region surrounded by two superfluids is found to host Andreev-like bound states. These bound states form topological synthetic bands versus the phase difference between the two superfluids. Changing the width of the normal region allows to invert the band topology and to create "interface" states. Instead of dem…
