英文摘要:
We propose new low-fidelity (LoFi) user equipment (UE) scheduling algorithms for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. The proposed methods rely on an efficient guess-and-check procedure that, given an objective function, performs paired comparisons between random subsets of UEs that should be scheduled in certain time slots. The proposed LoFi scheduling methods are computationally efficient, highly parallelizable, and gradient-free, which enables the use of almost arbitrary, non-differentiable objective functions. System simulations in a millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiuser MIMO scenario demonstrate that the proposed LoFi schedulers outperform a range of state-of-the-art user scheduling algorithms in terms of bit error-rate and/or computational complexity.
This paper studies the design of a decentralized multiuser multi-antenna (MIMO) system for spectrum sharing over a fixed narrow band, where the coexisting users independently update their transmit covariance matrices for individual transmit-rate maximization via an iterative manner. This design problem was usually investigated in the literature by assuming that each user treats the co-channel interference from all the other users as additional (colored) noise at the receiver, i.e., the conventional single-user decoder (SUD) is applied. This paper proposes a new decoding method for the decentra…
Aiming at maximizing the achievable sum-rate of wideband multiuser mmWave massive MIMO systems, the hybrid precoding is studied. Since each computation of the achievable sum-rate can be performed only after the analog precoder and digital precoder are both determined, the maximization of the achievable sum-rate has intractable computational complexity. By introducing the interference free (IF) achievable sum-rate, the design of the analog and digital precoders can be decoupled. To avoid the beam conflict and maximize the IF achievable sum-rate, a Hungarian-based codeword selection algorithm is…
In this paper, we endeavour to seek a fundamental understanding of the potentials and limitations of training-based multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In a multiuser MIMO system, users are geographically separated. So, the near-far effect plays an indispensable role in channel fading. The existing optimal training design for conventional MIMO does not take the near-far effect into account, and thus is not applicable to a multiuser MIMO system. In this work, we use the majorization theory as a basic tool to study the tradeoff between the channel estimation quality and the …
In this letter, we study the performance of a downlink multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with sub-connected structure over limited feedback channels. Tight rate approximations are theoretically analyzed for the system with pure analog precoding and hybrid precoding. The effect of quantized analog and digital precoding is characterized in the derived expressions. Furthermore, it is revealed that the pure analog precoding outperforms the hybrid precoding using maximal-ratio transmission (MRT) or zero forcing (ZF) under certain conditions, and we theoretically charact…
This study proposes a symbol-level precoding algorithm based on the minimum mean squared error design objective under a strict per antenna power constraint for PSK modulation. The proposed design is then formulated in the standard form of a second-order cone program, allowing for an optimal solution via the interior point method. Numerical results indicate that the proposed design is superior to the existing approaches in terms of bit-error-rate for the low and intermediate SNR regime.
In this paper, we consider the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter which simultaneously functions as a MIMO radar and a base station for downlink multiuser communications. In addition to a power constraint, we require the covariance of the transmit waveform be equal to a given optimal covariance for MIMO radar, to guarantee the radar performance. With this constraint, we formulate and solve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem for multiuser transmit beamforming via convex optimization. Considering that the interference cannot be complet…
Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) uses $n_t$ transmit antenna elements but fewer transmit radio frequency (RF) chains, $n_{rf}$. Spatial modulation (SM) and spatial multiplexing are special cases of GSM with $n_{rf}=1$ and $n_{rf}=n_t$, respectively. In GSM, in addition to conveying information bits through $n_{rf}$ conventional modulation symbols (for example, QAM), the indices of the $n_{rf}$ active transmit antennas also convey information bits. In this paper, we investigate {\em GSM for large-scale multiuser MIMO communications on the uplink}. Our contributions in this paper include: ($…
This paper considers the use of NOMA in multiuser MIMO systems in practical scenarios where CSI is acquired through pilot signaling. A new NOMA scheme that uses shared pilots is proposed. Achievable rate analysis is carried out for different pilot signaling schemes including both uplink and downlink pilots. The achievable rate performance of the proposed NOMA scheme with shared pilot within each group is compared with the traditional orthogonal access scheme with orthogonal pilots. Our proposed scheme is a generalization of the orthogonal scheme, and can be reduced to the orthogonal scheme whe…
We study the performance of uplink transmission in a large-scale (massive) MIMO system, where all the transmitters have single antennas and the receiver (base station) has a large number of antennas. Specifically, we analyze achievable degrees of freedom of the system without assuming channel state information at the receiver. Also, we quantify the amount of power saving that is possible with increasing number of receive antennas.
This paper proposes a communication model for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems based on large intelligent surfaces (LIS), where the LIS is modeled as a collection of tightly packed antenna elements. The LIS system is first represented in a circuital way, obtaining expressions for the radiated and received powers, as well as for the coupling between the distinct elements. Then, this circuital model is used to characterize the channel in a line-of-sight propagation scenario, rendering the basis for the analysis and design of MIMO systems. Due to the particular properties o…
This paper studies the sum rate performance of a low complexity quantized CSI-based Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoding scheme for downlink multiuser MIMO tansmission, employing greedy user selection. The asymptotic distribution of the output signal to interference plus noise ratio of each selected user and the asymptotic sum rate as the number of users K grows large are derived by using extreme value theory. For fixed finite signal to noise ratios and a finite number of transmit antennas $n_T$, we prove that as K grows large, the proposed approach can achieve the optimal sum rate scaling of th…
In this paper, we solve the sum mean-squared error (MSE)-optimal 1-bit quantized precoding problem exactly for small-to-moderate sized multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems via branch and bound. To this end, we reformulate the original NP-hard precoding problem as a tree search and deploy a number of strategies that improve the pruning efficiency without sacrificing optimality. We evaluate the error-rate performance and the complexity of the resulting 1-bit branch-and-bound (BB-1) precoder, and compare its efficacy to that of existing, suboptimal algorithms for 1-bit preco…
Joint user selection and precoding in multiuser MIMO settings can be interpreted as group sparse recovery in linear models. In this problem, a signal with group sparsity is to be reconstructed from an underdetermined system of equations. This paper utilizes this equivalent interpretation and develops a computationally tractable algorithm based on the method of group LASSO. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed scheme shows performance enhancements in two different respects: higher achievable sum-rate and lower interference at the non-selected user terminals.
In this paper, we consider a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication system between a base station equipped with multiple antennas and multiple mobile users each equipped with a single antenna. The uplink scenario is considered. The uplink channels are acquired by the base station through a training phase. Two linear processing schemes are considered, namely maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF). We optimize the training period and optimal training energy under the average and peak power constraint so that an achievable sum rate is maximized.
This paper investigates the sum spectral efficiency maximization problem in downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low-resolution quantizers at an access point (AP) and users. In particular, we consider rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) to enhance spectral efficiency by offering opportunities to boost achievable degrees of freedom. Optimizing RSMA precoders, however, is highly challenging due to the minimum rate constraint when determining the rate of the common stream. The quantization errors coupled with the precoders further make the problem more complicat…
Most recently, there has been a flurry of research activities on studying how massive MIMO precoding should be designed when the digital-to-analog conversion at the transmitter side is operated by cheap one-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Such research is motivated by the desire to substantially cut down the hardware cost and power consumption of the radio-frequency chain, which is unaffordable in massive MIMO if high-resolution DACs are still used. One-bit MIMO precoding design problems are much harder to solve than their high-resolution DAC counterparts. In our previous work, we dev…
In this paper, we propose algorithms for signal detection in large-scale multiuser {\em spatial modulation multiple-input multiple-output (SM-MIMO)} systems. In large-scale SM-MIMO, each user is equipped with multiple transmit antennas (e.g., 2 or 4 antennas) but only one transmit RF chain, and the base station (BS) is equipped with tens to hundreds of (e.g., 128) receive antennas. In SM-MIMO, in a given channel use, each user activates any one of its multiple transmit antennas and the index of the activated antenna conveys information bits in addition to the information bits conveyed through …
Precoding design exploiting deep learning methods has been widely studied for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. However, conventional neural precoding design applies black-box-based neural networks which are less interpretable. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based precoding method based on an interpretable design of a neural precoding network, namely iPNet. In particular, the iPNet mimics the classic minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) precoding and approximates the matrix inversion in the design of the neural network architecture. Specifically, the proposed …
In this work, we propose a new single-RF MIMO architecture which enjoys high scalability and energy-efficiency. The transmitter in this proposal consists of a single RF illuminator radiating towards a reflecting surface. Each element on the reflecting surface re-transmits its received signal after applying a phase-shift, such that a desired beamforming pattern is obtained. For this architecture, the problem of beamforming is interpreted as linear regression and a solution is derived via the method of least-squares. Using this formulation, a fast iterative algorithm for tuning of the reflecting…
The problem of radio resource allocation for global energy efficiency (GEE) maximization in mmWaves large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems using hybrid-beamforming with spatial modulation is addressed. The theoretical properties of the optimization problem at hand are analyzed and two provably convergent optimization algorithms with affordable complexity are proposed. The former achieves the global optimum, while the latter trades off optimality with a lower computational complexity. Nevertheless, numerical results show that both algorithms attain global optimality in practi…
Multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) plays a key role in the widely adopted 3GPP LTE standard for wireless cellular networks. While exact and asymptotic sum-rate results are well known, the problem of obtaining intuitive analytical results for medium signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) is still not solved. In this paper, we propose the bend point, which quantifies the transition between low and high SNR; i.e., the beginning of the high SNR region. We derive the bend point for MU-MIMO with zero-forcing precoding and show that it is intimately related to the intercept of the high SNR asymptote with the zero sum-r…
This paper investigates the passive beamforming and information transfer (PBIT) technique for the multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with the aid of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), where the RIS enhances the primary communication via passive beamforming and at the same time delivers additional information by the spatial modulation (which adjusts the on-off states of the reflecting elements). For the passive beamforming design, we propose to maximize the sum channel capacity of the RIS-aided multiuser MIMO channel and formulate the problem as a two-step stochast…
We investigate beam training and allocation for multiuser millimeter wave massive MIMO systems. An orthogonal pilot based beam training scheme is first developed to reduce the number of training times, where all users can simultaneously perform the beam training with the base station (BS). As the number of users increases, the same beam from the BS may point to different users, leading to beam conflict and multiuser interference. Therefore, a quality-of-service (QoS) constrained (QC) beam allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the equivalent channel gain of the QoS-satisfied users, under th…
This paper proposes a linear interference alignment (IA) scheme which can be used for uplink channels in a general multicell multiuser MIMO cellular network. The proposed scheme aims to align interference caused by signals from a set of transmitters into a subspace which is established by the signals from only a subset of those transmitters, thereby effectively reducing the number of interfering transmitters. The total degrees of freedom (DoF) achievable by the proposed scheme is given in closed-form expression, and a numerical analysis shows that the proposed scheme can achieve the optimal Do…
Accurate channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is critical for maximizing spectral efficiency on the downlink of multi-antenna networks. In this work we analyze a novel form of physical layer attacks on such closed-loop wireless networks. Specifically, this paper considers the impact of deliberately inaccurate feedback by malicious users in a multiuser multicast system. Numerical results demonstrate the significant degradation in performance of closed-loop transmission schemes due to intentional feedback of false CSI by adversarial users.
This letter investigates the secure communication in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system exploiting artificial noise (AN). We first derive a closed-form expression of the ergodic secrecy rate under spatially correlated MIMO channels. By using this derived result, we further optimize the power fraction of AN in closed form and the RIS phase shifts by developing a gradient-based algorithm, which requires only statistical channel state information (CSI). Our analysis shows that spatial correlation at the RIS provides an a…
In this paper, an energy efficiency (EE) game in a MIMO multiple access channel (MAC) communication system is considered. The existence and the uniqueness of the Nash Equilibrium (NE) is affirmed. A bisection search algorithm is designed to find this unique NE. Despite being sub-optimal for deploying the $\varepsilon$-approximate NE of the game when the number of antennas in transmitter is unequal to receiver's, the policy found by the proposed algorithm is shown to be more efficient than the classical allocation techniques. Moreover, compared to the general algorithm based on fractional progr…
This letter considers spectrum sharing between a primary multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless energy transfer (WET) system and a coexisting secondary point-to-point MIMO wireless information transmission (WIT) system, where WET generates interference to WIT and degrades its throughput performance. We show that due to the interference, the WIT system suffers from a loss of the degrees of freedom (DoF) proportional to the number of energy beams sent by the energy transmitter (ET), which, in general, needs to be larger than one in order to optimize the multiuser WET with user …

In this work, we investigate the sum-rate performance of multicell and cell-free massive MIMO systems using linear precoding and multiuser scheduling algorithms. We consider the use of a network-centric clustering approach to reduce the computational complexity of the techniques applied to the cell-free system. We then develop a greedy algorithm that considers multiple candidates for the subset of users to be scheduled and that approaches the performance of the optimal exhaustive search. We assess the proposed and existing scheduling algorithms in both multicell and cell-free networks with the…
We derive a general and closed-form result for the success probability in downlink multiple-antenna (MIMO) heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets), utilizing a novel Toeplitz matrix representation. This main result, which is equivalently the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) distribution, includes multiuser MIMO, single-user MIMO and per-tier biasing for $K$ different tiers of randomly placed base stations (BSs), assuming zero-forcing precoding and perfect channel state information. The large SIR limit of this result admits a simple closed form that is accurate at moderate SIRs, e.g., above…
In this paper, we propose a joint pilot design and channel estimation scheme based on the deep learning (DL) technique for multiuser multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) channels. To this end, we construct a pilot designer using two-layer neural networks (TNNs) and a channel estimator using deep neural networks (DNNs), which are jointly trained to minimize the mean square error (MSE) of channel estimation. To effectively reduce the interference among the multiple users, we also use the successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique in the channel estimation process. The numerical result…
In this paper, we propose a new detection technique for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. The proposed scheme combines a lattice reduction (LR) transformation, which makes the channel matrix nearly orthogonal, and then employs a multi-branch (MB) technique with successive interference cancellation (SIC). A single LR transformation is required for the receive filters of all branches in the scheme, which proposes a different ordering for each branch and generates a list of detection candidates. The best vector of estimated symbols is chosen according to the maximum like…
In this work, we propose a novel adaptive reduced-rank strategy based on joint interpolation, decimation and filtering (JIDF) for large multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this scheme, a reduced-rank framework is proposed for linear receive processing and multiuser interference suppression according to the minimization of the bit error rate (BER) cost function. We present a structure with multiple processing branches that performs dimensionality reduction, where each branch contains a group of jointly optimized interpolation and decimation units, followed by a linear re…
Block diagonalization (BD) based precoding techniques are well-known linear transmit strategies for multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) systems. By employing BD-type precoding algorithms at the transmit side, the MU-MIMO broadcast channel is decomposed into multiple independent parallel single user MIMO (SU-MIMO) channels and achieves the maximum diversity order at high data rates. The main computational complexity of BD-type precoding algorithms comes from two singular value decomposition (SVD) operations, which depend on the number of users and the dimensions of each user's channel matrix. In this work…
Due to the large power consumption in RF-circuitry of massive MIMO systems, practically relevant performance measures such as energy efficiency or bandwidth efficiency are neither necessarily monotonous functions of the total transmit power nor the number of active antennas. Optimal antenna selection is however computationally infeasible in these systems. In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm to optimize the transmit power and the subset of selected antennas subject to non-monotonous performance measures in massive multiuser MIMO settings. Numerical results are given for energy effi…
In this thesis, we investigate the problem of efficient data detection in large MIMO and high order MU-MIMO systems. First, near-optimal low-complexity detection algorithms are proposed for regular MIMO systems. Then, a family of low-complexity hard-output and soft-output detection schemes based on channel matrix puncturing targeted for large MIMO systems is proposed. The performance of these schemes is characterized and analyzed mathematically, and bounds on capacity, diversity gain, and probability of bit error are derived. After that, efficient high order MU-MIMO detectors are proposed, bas…
In this paper, we consider {\em media-based modulation (MBM)}, an attractive modulation scheme which is getting increased research attention recently, for the uplink of a massive MIMO system. Each user is equipped with one transmit antenna with multiple radio frequency (RF) mirrors (parasitic elements) placed near it. The base station (BS) is equipped with tens to hundreds of receive antennas. MBM with $m_{rf}$ RF mirrors and $n_r$ receive antennas over a multipath channel has been shown to asymptotically (as $m_{rf}\rightarrow \infty$) achieve the capacity of $n_r$ parallel AWGN channels. Thi…
We solve a sum rate maximization problem of full-duplex (FD) multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. Since additional self-interference (SI) in the uplink channel and co-channel interference (CCI) in the downlink channel are coupled in FD communication, the downlink and uplink multiuser beamforming vectors are required to be jointly designed. However, the joint optimization problem is non-convex and hard to solve due to the coupled effect. To properly address the coupled design issue, we reformulate the problem into an equivalent uplink channel problem, using the uplink and…
The high energy consumption of massive multi-input multi-out (MIMO) system has become a prominent problem in the millimeter wave(mm-Wave) communication scenario. The hybrid precoding technology greatly reduces the number of radio frequency(RF) chains by handing over part of the coding work to the phase shifting network, which can effectively improve energy efficiency. However, conventional hybrid precoding algorithms based on mathematical means often suffer from performance loss and high computational complexity. In this paper, a novel BP-neural-network-enabled hybrid precoding algorithm is pr…
In this paper we provide three contributions to the field of channel sounding waveform design in asynchronous Multi-user (MU) MIMO systems. The first contribution is a derivation of the asynchronous MU-MIMO model and the conditions that the sounding waveform must meet to independently resolve all of the spatial channel responses. Next we propose a chirp waveform that meets the constraints and we show that the MSE of our system meets the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) when the time offset is an integer multiple of the sampling interval. Finally we demonstrate that the channel capacity region of the asy…
To enable user diversity and multiplexing gains, a fully digital precoding multiple input multiple output (MIMO) architecture is typically applied. However, a large number of radio frequency (RF) chains make the system unrealistic to low-cost communications. Therefore, a practical three-stage hybrid analogue-digital precoding architecture, occupying fewer RF chains, is proposed aiming for a non-orthogonal IoT signal in low-cost multiuser MIMO systems. The non-orthogonal waveform can flexibly save spectral resources for massive devices connections or improve data rate without consuming extra sp…
In this paper, we consider a reconfigurable intelligence surface (RIS) aided uplink multiuser multi-input multi-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, where the receiver is assumed to conduct low-complexity iterative detection. We aim to minimize the total transmit power by jointly designing the precoder of the transmitter and the passive beamforming of the RIS. This problem can be tackled from the perspective of information theory. But this information-theoretic approach may involve prohibitively high complexity since the number of rate constraints that specif…
This letter investigates the joint active and passive beamforming optimization for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems with the objective of maximizing the weighted sum-rate. We show that this problem can be solved via a matrix weighted mean square error minimization equivalence. In particular, for the optimization of the passive IRS beamforming, we first propose an iterative algorithm with excellent performance based on the manifold optimization. By using the matrix fractional programming technique to obtain a more tractable object funct…
In this work, we consider the problem of reduced latency of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with iterative detection and decoding (IDD) receiver in multiuser multiple-antenna systems. The proposed knowledge-aided IDD (KA-IDD) system employs a minimum mean-square error detector with refined iterative processing and a reweighted belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm. We present reweighted BP decoding algorithms, which exploit the knowledge of short cycles in the graph structure and reweighting factors derived from the expansion of hypergraphs. Simulation results show that the proposed…
For a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, restricting the number of RF chains to far less than the number of antenna elements can significantly reduce the implementation cost compared to the full complexity RF chain configuration. In this paper, we consider the downlink communication of a massive multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) system and propose a low-complexity hybrid block diagonalization (Hy-BD) scheme to approach the capacity performance of the traditional BD processing method. We aim to harvest the large array gain through the phase-only RF precoding and combining and then dig…
