The $γ$-ray emitting compact symmetric objects (CSOs) PKS 1718--649, NGC 3894, and TXS 0128+554 are lobe-dominated in the radio emission. In order to investigate their $γ$-ray radiation properties, we analyze the $\sim$14-yr Fermi/LAT observation data of the three CSOs. They all show the low luminosity ($10^{41}-10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and no significant variability in the $γ$-ray band. Their $γ$-ray average spectra can be well fitted by a power-law function. These properties of $γ$-rays are clearly different from the $γ$-ray emitting CSOs CTD 135 and PKS 1413+135, for which the $γ$-rays are produced by a restarted aligned jet. In the $L_γ-Γ_γ$ plane, the three CSOs are also located at the region occupied by radio galaxies (RGs) while CTD 135 and PKS 1413+135 display the similar feature to blazars. Together with the similar radio emission property to $γ$-ray emitting RGs Cen A and Fornax A, we speculate that the $γ$-rays of the three CSOs stem from their extended mini-lobes. The broadband spectral energy distributions of the three CSOs can be well explained by the two-zone leptonic model, where their $γ$-rays are produced by the inverse Compton process of the relativistic electrons in extended region. By extrapolating the observed Fermi/LAT spectra to the very high energy band, we find that TXS 0128+554 among the three CSOs may be detected by the Cherenkov Telescope Array in future.
The recent discovery of the gamma-ray emission from the lobes of the closest radio galaxy Centaurus A by Fermi implies the presence of high-energy electrons at least up to gamma ~ 10^5 - 10^6. These high-energy electrons are required to interpret the observed gamma-ray radiation in terms of inverse Compton emission off the cosmic microwave background (IC/CMB); the widely accepted scenario to describe the X-ray emission of radio galaxy lobes. In this Letter, we consider the giant radio lobes of FR II radio galaxies showing that it is possible to maintain electrons at energies gamma ~ 10^5 - 10^…
Hadronic emission from parsec size radio lobes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is discussed. The lobes are composed of shocked jet plasmaand expected to be filled with high energy particles. By using the Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the photon spectra from the lobes including photo-meson interaction processes. When the synchrotron emission from primary electrons is bright, synchrotron-self-Compton component is dominant in gamma-ray bands. The hadronic emission from the lobes can be dominated in gamma-ray bands when the primary emission is not very bright. Proton synchrotron component a…
Recent radio observations reveal the existence of mini radio lobes in active galaxies with their scales of $\sim 10 {\rm pc}$. The lobes are expected to be filled with shock accelerated electrons and protons. In this work, we examine the photon spectra from the mini lobes, properly taking the hadronic processes into account. We find that the resultant broadband spectra contain the two distinct hadronic bumps in $γ$-ray bands, i.e., the proton synchrotron bump at $\sim$ MeV and the synchrotron bump at $\sim$ GeV due to the secondary electrons/positrons produced via photo-pion cascade. Especiall…
We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope detection of extended gamma-ray emission from the lobes of the radio galaxy Fornax A using 6.1 years of Pass 8 data. After Centaurus A, this is now the second example of an extended gamma-ray source attributed to a radio galaxy. Both an extended flat disk morphology and a morphology following the extended radio lobes were preferred over a point-source description, and the core contribution was constrained to be < 14% of the total gamma-ray flux. A preferred alignment of the gamma-ray elongation with the radio lobes was demonstrated by rotating the radio…
We systematically analyze the 6-year {\it Fermi}/LAT data of the lobe-dominated quasars (LDQs) in the complete LDQ sample from 3CRR survey and report the discovery of high-energy $γ$-ray emission from 3C 275.1. The $γ$-ray emission of 3C 207 is confirmed and significant variability of the lightcurve is identified. We do not find statistically significant $γ$-ray emission from other LDQs. 3C 275.1 is the known $γ$-ray quasar with the lowest core dominance parameter (i.e., $R=0.11$). We also show that both the northern radio hotspot and parsec jet models can reasonably reproduce the $γ$-ray data…
We explore non-thermal emission from a shocked interstellar medium, which is identified as an expanding shell, driven by a relativistic jet in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In this work, we particularly focus on parsec-scale size mini-shells surrounding mini radio lobes. From radio to X-ray band, the mini radio lobe emission dominates the faint emission from the mini-shell. On the other hand, we find that inverse-Compton (IC) emission from the shell can overwhelm the associated lobe emission at very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray range, because energy densities of synchrotron photons …
The γ-ray data of Fermi-LAT on the giant lobes of Centaurus A are analysed together with the high frequency radio data obtained with the Planck satellite. The large γ-ray photon statistics, accumulated during seven years of observations, and the recently updated Fermi collaboration software tools allow substantial extension of the detected γ-ray emission towards higher energy, up to 30 GeV, and lower energy, down to 60 MeV. Moreover, the new γ-ray data allow us to explore the spatial features of γ-ray emission of the lobes. For the north lobe, we confirm, with higher statistical significance, …
The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has detected the gamma-ray glow emanating from the giant radio lobes of the radio galaxy Centaurus A. The resolved gamma-ray image shows the lobes clearly separated from the central active source. In contrast to all other active galaxies detected so far in high-energy gamma-rays, the lobe flux constitutes a considerable portion (>1/2) of the total source emission. The gamma-ray emission from the lobes is interpreted as inverse Compton scattered relic radiation from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), with additional contribution at higher energies from th…
3C 207 is a lobe-dominant radio galaxy with one sided jet and the bright knots in kpc-Mpc scale were resolved in the radio, optical and X-ray bands. It was confirmed as a gamma-ray emitter with Fermi/LAT, but it is uncertain whether the gamma-ray emission region is the core or knots due to the low spatial resolution of Fermi/LAT. We present an analysis of its Fermi/LAT data in the past 9 years. Different from the radio and optical emission from the core, it is found that the gamma-ray emission is steady without detection of flux variation over 2 sigma confidence level. This likely implies that…
Recent analyses of the broad spectral energy distributions (SED) of extensive lobes of local radio-galaxies have confirmed the leptonic origin of their Fermi/LAT gamma-ray emission, significantly constraining the level of hadronic contribution. SED of distant (D > 125 Mpc) radio-galaxy lobes are currently limited to the radio and X-ray bands, hence give no information on the presence of non-thermal (NT) protons but are adequate to describe the properties of NT electrons. Modeling lobe radio and X-ray emission in 3C 98, Pictor A, DA 240, Cygnus A, 3C 326, and 3C 236, we fully determine the prop…
Current measurements of the spectral energy distribution in radio, X-and-gamma-ray provide a sufficiently wide basis for determining basic properties of energetic electrons and protons in the extended lobes of the radio galaxy Fornax A. Of particular interest is establishing observationally, for the first time, the level of contribution of energetic protons to the extended emission observed by the Fermi satellite. Two recent studies concluded that the observed gamma-ray emission is unlikely to result from Compton scattering of energetic electrons off the optical radiation field in the lobes, a…
SS433, located at the center of the supernova remnant W50, is a close proximity binary system consisting of a compact star and a normal star. Jets of material are directed outwards from the vicinity of the compact star symmetrically to the east and west. Non-thermal hard X-ray emission is detected from lobes lying on both sides. Shock accelerated electrons are expected to generate sub-TeV gamma rays through the inverse-Compton process in the lobes. Observations of the western X-ray lobe region of SS433/W50 system have been performed to detect sub-TeV gamma-rays using the 10m CANGAROO-II telesc…
We present new low-frequency observations of the nearby radio galaxy Fornax A at 154 MHz with the Murchison Widefield Array, microwave flux-density measurements obtained from WMAP and Planck data, and gamma-ray flux densities obtained from Fermi data. We also compile a comprehensive list of previously published images and flux-density measurements at radio, microwave and X-ray energies. A detailed analysis of the spectrum of Fornax A between 154 MHz and 1510 MHz reveals that both radio lobes have a similar spatially-averaged spectral index, and that there exists a steep-spectrum bridge of diff…
A maximum jet efficiency line $R\sim 25$ ($R=L_{\rm jet}/L_{\rm bol}$), found in FRII radio galaxies by Fernandes et al., was extended to cover the full range of jet power by Punsly. Recent general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations on jet formation mainly focused on the enhancement of jet power. In this work, we suggest that the jet efficiency could be very high even for conventional jet power if the radiative efficiency of disk were much smaller. We adopt the model of a thin disk with magnetically driven winds to investigate the observational high efficiency jets in FRII ra…
We report the results of a Suzaku X-ray imaging study of NGC6251, a nearby giant radio galaxy with intermediate FR I/II radio properties. Our pointing direction was centered on the gamma -ray emission peak recently discovered with Fermi-LAT around the position of the north-west radio lobe 15 arcmin offset from the nucleus. After subtracting two "off-source" pointings adjacent to the radio lobe, and removing possible contaminants in the XIS field of view, we found significant residual X-ray emission most likely diffuse in nature. The spectrum of the excess X-ray emission is well fit by a power …
We consider gamma-ray burst models where the radiation is dominated by a photospheric region providing the MeV Band spectrum, and an external shock region responsible for the GeV radiation via inverse Compton scattering. We parametrize the initial dynamics through an acceleration law Gamma \propto r^μ, with μbetween 1/3 and 1 to represent the range between an extreme magnetically dominated and a baryonically dominated regime. We compare these models to several bright Fermi LAT bursts, and show that both the time integrated and the time resolved spectra, where available, can be well described b…
We revisit the vertical structure of neutrino-dominated accretion flows in spherical coordinates. We stress that the flow should be geometrically thick when advection becomes dominant. In our calculation, the luminosity of neutrino annihilation is enhanced by one or two orders of magnitude. The empty funnel along the rotation axis can naturally explain the neutrino annihilable ejection.
We examine the fate of a dead radio source in which jet injection from the central engine has stopped at an early stage of its evolution ($t = t_j \lesssim 10^5$ yr). To this aim, we theoretically evaluate the evolution of the emission from both the lobe and the shell, which are composed of shocked jet matter and a shocked ambient medium, respectively. Based on a simple dynamical model of expanding lobe and shell, we clarify how the broadband spectrum of each component evolves before and after the cessation of the jet activity. It is shown that the spectrum is strongly dominated by the lobe em…
PKS 0202$+$149 is a low-power radio source with blazar-like $γ$-ray AGN characteristics and its properties and classification are investigated in relation to its $γ$-ray characteristics. It shows a hint of low frequency turnover at about 200 MHz. Radio imaging data of 0202$+$149 at different frequencies show differing morphologies on both kilo-parsec (kpc) and parsec (pc) scales. The overall source shows a triple structure of core and double lobes with a total projected size of $\sim$1.3 kpc. The compact source structure of 0202+149 is reminiscent of a compact steep spectrum (CSS) source. At p…
Centaurus B is a nearby radio galaxy positioned in the Southern hemisphere close to the Galactic plane. Here we present a detailed analysis of about 43 months of accumulated Fermi-LAT data of the gamma-ray counterpart of the source initially reported in the 2nd Fermi-LAT catalog, and of newly acquired Suzaku X-ray data. We confirm its detection at GeV photon energies, and analyze the extension and variability of the gamma-ray source in the LAT dataset, in which it appears as a steady gamma-ray emitter. The X-ray core of Centaurus B is detected as a bright source of a continuum radiation. We do…
Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) are generally considered to originate from the massive collapsars. It is believed that the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is a neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF) around a rotating stellar-mass black hole (BH). The neutrino annihilation above the NDAF is a feasible mechanism to power GRB. In this work, we analyse the distributions of the isotropic gamma-ray radiated energy and jet kinetic energy of 48 LGRBs. According to the NDAF and fireball models, we estimate the mean accreted masses of LGRBs in our sample to investigate whether the NDA…
There are a number of theories explaining the nature of the so-called X-shaped radio sources. According to one of them, an X-shaped source is indeed a cross whose one arm is associated with a double radio source that has changed its orientation in space, while the other arm is associated with relic lobes and its position indicates the former direction of the jets. Here, I present two new arguments in favour of this conjecture. Firstly, it is obvious that shortly after the repositioning, the pair of the new lobes must be very compact. To illustrate such a possibility, I show an EVN image of the…
We report the discovery of high-energy γ-ray emission from the Broad Line Radio Galaxy (BLRG) Pictor A with a significance of ~5.8σ(TS=33.4), based on three years of observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detector. The three-year averaged E>0.2 GeV γ-ray spectrum is adequately described by a power-law, with a photon index, Γ, of $2.93 \pm 0.03$ and a resultant integrated flux of $F_γ=(5.8\pm0.7) \times 10^{-9}$ ph cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. A temporal investigation of the observed γ-ray flux, which binned the flux into year long intervals, reveals that the flux in the third year was 50…
PKS 0438$-$436 at a redshift of $z=2.856$ has been previously recognized as possessing perhaps the most luminous known synchrotron jet. Little is known about this source since the maximum elevation above the horizon is low for the Very Large Array (VLA). We present the first VLA radio image that detects the radio lobes. We use both the 151 MHz luminosity, as a surrogate for the isotropic radio lobe luminosity, and the lobe flux density from the radio image to estimate a long term, time averaged, jet power, $\overline{Q} =1.5\pm 0.7 \times 10^{47} \rm{ergs~s^{-1}}$. We analyze two deep optical …
Recent observations and theoretical work on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) favor the central engine model of a Kerr black hole (BH) surrounded by a magnetized neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF). The magnetic coupling between the BH and disk through a large-scale closed magnetic field exerts a torque on the disk, and transports the rotational energy from the BH to the disk. We investigate the properties of the NDAF with this magnetic torque. For a rapid spinning BH, the magnetic torque transfers enormous rotational energy from BH into the inner disk. There are two consequences: (i) the luminosit…
We have detected an Halpha bow shock nebula around PSR J1741-2054, a pulsar discovered through its GeV gamma-ray pulsations. The pulsar is only ~1.5" behind the leading edge of the shock. Optical spectroscopy shows that the nebula is non-radiative, dominated by Balmer emission. The Halpha images and spectra suggest that the pulsar wind momentum is equatorially concentrated and implies a pulsar space velocity ~150km/s, directed 15+/-10deg out of the plane of the sky. The complex Halpha profile indicates that different portions of the post-shock flow dominate line emission as gas moves along the…
We investigate the vertical structure and elements distribution of neutrino-dominated accretion flows around black holes in spherical coordinates with the reasonable nuclear statistical equilibrium. According our calculations, heavy nuclei tend to be produced in a thin region near the disk surface, whose mass fractions are primarily determined by the accretion rate and the vertical distribution of temperature and density. In this thin region, we find that $^{56}\rm Ni$ is dominant for the flow with low accretion rate (e.g., $0.05 $$M_{\odot}$ $\rm s^{-1}$) but $^{56}\rm Fe$ is dominant for the…
A hyperaccretion disk formed around a stellar mass black hole is a plausible model for the central engine that powers gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). If the central black hole rotates and a poloidal magnetic field threads its horizon, a powerful relativistic jet may be driven by a process resembling the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. We estimate the luminosity of such a jet assuming that the poloidal magnetic field strength is comparable to the inner accretion disk pressure. We show that the jet efficiency attains its maximal value when the accretion flow is cooled via optically-thin neutrino emission. …
Neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) around rotating stellar-mass black holes (BHs) are plausible candidates for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). NDAFs are hyperaccretion disks with accretion rates in the range of around 0.001-10 $M_\odot ~\rm s^{-1}$, which have high density and temperature and therefore are extremely optically thick and geometrically slim or even thick. We review the theoretical progresses in studying the properties of NDAFs as well as their applications to the GRB phenomenology. The topics include: the steady radial and vertical structure of NDAFs and t…
The composition of a jet is still an unsolved problem in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Several previous studies have suggested that the prompt emission spectrum of GRBs is likely to consist of a few components that may arise from different jet compositions. Here we present a systematic analysis to search for the GRBs that seem to show the transition from a fireball to the Poynting-flux-dominated outflow between well-separated pulses within a single burst, like the GRB 160626B, using the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor data of the \emph{Fermi} satellite. We obtain 43 GRBs with clear multiple pulses and find…
We study the narrowest spectra expected from gamma-ray bursts. We present an analytical function for the spectrum that is emitted from the photosphere of a radiation-dominated flow that is under acceleration. This is the narrowest possible spectrum and it differs from a Planck function. We also present numerical spectra from photospheres occurring during the transition into the coasting phase of the flow. Using these spectral models, we reanalyse Fermi observations of GRB100507 and GRB101219, which both have been reported to have very narrow spectra. The bursts can be fitted by the spectral mo…
A stellar mass black hole (BH) surrounded by a neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF) has been discussed in a number of works as the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It is widely believed that NDAF cannot liberate enough energy for bright GRBs. However, these works have been based on the assumption of "no torque" boundary condition, which is invalid when the disk is magnetized. In this paper, we present both numerical and analytical solutions for NDAFs with non-zero boundary stresses, and reexamine their properties. We find that NDAF with such boundary torque can be powerful enough…
In the coalescence events of binary neutron star (NS) or a black hole (BH) and an NS, a BH hyperaccretion disk might be eventually formed. At very high mass accretion rates, MeV neutrinos will be emitted from this disk, which is called a neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF). Neutrino annihilation in the space out of the disk is energetic enough to launch ultrarelativistic jets to power gamma-ray bursts. Moreover, vertical advection might exist in NDAFs, which can generate the magnetic buoyancy bubbles to release gamma-ray photons. In this paper, we visit the effects of the vertical advecti…
Recent radio surveys have discovered a large number of low luminosity core dominated radio galaxies that are much more abundant than those at higher luminosities. These objects will be too faint in gamma-rays to be detected individually by Fermi. Nevertheless, they may contribute significantly to the unresolved extragalactic gamma-ray background. We consider here the possible contribution of these core dominated radio galaxies to the diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background. Using published data available for all 45 of the radiogalaxies listed as detected counterparts in the Fermi FL8Y sourc…
It was suggested that the relativistic jets in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are powered via the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism or the annihilation of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos from a neutrino cooling-dominated accretion flow (NDAF). The advection and diffusion of the large-scale magnetic field of a NDAF is calculated, and the external magnetic field is found to be dragged inward efficiently by the accretion flow for a typical magnetic Prandtl number P_m=1. The maximal BZ jet power can be ~10^53-10^54 erg/sec for an extreme Kerr black hole, if an external magnetic field with 10^14 Gauss is advec…
We present a model for gamma-ray bursts where a dissipative photosphere provides the usual spectral peak around MeV energies accompanied by a subdominant thermal component. We treat the initial acceleration of the jet in a general way, allowing for magnetic field- and baryon dominated outflows. In this model, the GeV emission associated with GRBs observed by Fermi LAT, arises as the interaction of photospheric radiation and the shocked electrons at the deceleration radius. Through recently discovered correlations between the thermal and non-thermal peaks within individual bursts, we are able t…
The physical composition of the ejecta of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) remains an open question. The radiation mechanism of the prompt gamma rays is also in debate. This problem can be solved for the bursts hosting distinct thermal radiation. However, the events with dominant thermal spectral components are still rare. In this work, we focus on GRB 220426A, a recent event detected by Fermi-GBM. The time-resolved and time-integrated data analyses yield very hard low-energy spectral indices and rather soft high-energy spectral indices. This means that the spectra of GRB 220426A are narrowly distribut…
The system of accretion disk and black hole is usually considered as the central engine of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). It is usually thought that the disk in the central engine of GRBs is the advection-dominated accretion disk, which is developed from a massive (mass M_disk) torus at radius r_disk. We find a positive correlation between the isotropic gamma-ray energy E_iso and duration (so-called T_90) for GRBs. We interpret this correlation within the advection-dominated accretion disk model, associating E_iso and T_90 with M_ disk and viscous timescale respectively.
We present new results on the shock around the southwest radio lobe of Centaurus A using data from the Chandra Very Large Programme observations. The X-ray spectrum of the emission around the outer southwestern edge of the lobe is well described by a single power-law model with Galactic absorption -- thermal models are strongly disfavoured, except in the region closest to the nucleus. We conclude that a significant fraction of the X-ray emission around the southwest part of the lobe is synchrotron, not thermal. We infer that in the region where the shock is strongest and the ambient gas densit…
We explore the evolution of the emissions by accelerated electrons in shocked shells driven by jets in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Focusing on powerful sources which host luminous quasars, we evaluated the broadband emission spectra by properly taking into account adiabatic and radiative cooling effects on the electron distribution. The synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton (IC) scattering of various photons that are mainly produced in the accretion disc and dusty torus are considered as radiation processes. We show that the resultant radiation is dominated by the IC emission for compac…
We present the effects of the self-gravity on the vertical structure and neutrino luminosity of the neutrino-dominated accretion disks in cylindrical coordinates. It is found that significant changes of the structure appear in the outer region of the disk, especially for high accretion rates (e.g., $\ga 1 M_\odot~\rm s^{-1}$), and thus causes the slight increase of the neutrino luminosity. Furthermore, the gravitational instability of the disk is reviewed by the vertical distribution of the Toomre parameter \citep{Toomre1964}, which may account for the late-time flares in gamma-ray bursts and …
Deep Chandra and VLA imaging reveals a clear correlation between X-ray and radio emission on scales $\sim 100$~kpc in the Spiderweb radio galaxy at z=2.16. The X-ray emission associated with the extended radio source is likely dominated by inverse Compton up-scattering of cosmic microwave background photons by the radio emitting relativistic electrons. For regions dominated by high surface brightness emission, such as hot spots and jet knots, the implied magnetic fields are $\sim 50~μ$G to $70~μ$G. The non-thermal pressure is these brighter regions is then $\sim 9\times 10^{-10}$ dyne cm$^{-2}…
We present phase-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the optical counterpart to the X-ray binary IGR J19308+0530. Ellipsoidal modulations in the light curve show that the F-type companion star in the system is Roche lobe filling. The optical spectra are dominated by absorption features from the donor star, with ~10-20 per cent disc contribution to the optical continuum. We measure an orbital period of 14.662+-0.001 h, a radial velocity semiamplitude for the companion star of K2 = 91.4+-1.4 kms-1 and a rotational broadening of vsini = 108.9+-0.6 kms-1. From K2 and vsini, given that the dono…
We report the discovery of gamma-ray emission from the Circinus galaxy using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Circinus is a nearby (~4 Mpc) starburst with a heavily obscured Seyfert-type active nucleus, bipolar radio lobes perpendicular to the spiral disk, and kpc-scale jet-like structures. Our analysis of 0.1-100 GeV events collected during 4 years of LAT observations reveals a significant (~ 7.3 sigma) excess above the background. We find no indications of variability or spatial extension beyond the LAT point-spread function. A power-law model used …
GRB 101225A is a prototype of the class of blackbody-dominated (BBD) gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It has been suggested that BBD-GRBs result from the merger of a binary system formed by a neutron star and the helium core of an evolved star. We have modelled the propagation of ultrarelativistic jets through the environment left behind the merger by means of relativistic hydrodynamic simulations. In this paper, the output of our numerical models is post-processed to obtain the (thermal) radiative signature of the resulting outflow. We outline the most relevant dynamical details of the jet propagatio…
Neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF) around a rotating stellar-mass black hole (BH) is one of the plausible candidates for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Because the time-variant and anisotropic emission of neutrinos from NDAFs leads to GRB variability, NDAFs can be regarded as the sources of the strong gravitational waves (GWs). We calculate the dependences of the GW strains on both the BH spin and the accretion rate. We demonstrate that for typical GRBs with either single pulse or multiple pulses, the GWs from NDAFs might be detected at a distance of $\sim 100$ kpc/$\sim…
We present a detailed study of the X-ray, optical and radio emission from the jet, lobes and core of the quasar PKS 2101-490 as revealed by new Chandra, HST and ATCA images. We extract the radio to X-ray spectral energy distributions from seven regions of the 13 arcsecond jet, and model the jet X-ray emission in terms of Doppler beamed inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background (IC/CMB) for a jet in a state of equipartition between particle and magnetic field energy densities. This model implies that the jet remains highly relativistic hundreds of kpc from the nucleus, with …
We report the $γ$-ray detection of a young radio galaxy, PKS 1718$-$649, belonging to the class of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the {\it Fermi} satellite. The third {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray LAT catalog (3FGL) includes an unassociated $γ$-ray source, 3FGL J1728.0$-$6446, located close to PKS 1718$-$649. Using the latest Pass 8 calibration, we confirm that the best fit $1 σ$ position of the $γ$-ray source is compatible with the radio location of PKS 1718$-$649. Cross-matching of the $γ$-ray source position with the positions of blazar sources from s…
Most Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have erratic light curves, which demand that the GRB central engine launches an episodic outflow. Recent Fermi observations of some GRBs indicate a lack of the thermal photosphere component as predicted by the baryonic fireball model, which suggests a magnetic origin of GRBs. In view that powerful episodic jets have been observed along with continuous jets in other astrophysical black hole systems, here we propose an intrinsically episodic, magnetically-dominated jet model for GRB central engine. Accumulation and eruption of free magnetic energy in the corona of a …
We present an analytical model for the evolution of extended active galactic nuclei (AGNs) throughout their full lifecycle, including the initial jet expansion, lobe formation, and eventual remnant phases. A particular focus of our contribution is on the early jet expansion phase, which is traditionally not well captured in analytical models. We implement this model within the Radio AGN in Semi-Analytic Environments (RAiSE) framework, and find that the predicted radio source dynamics are in good agreement with hydrodynamic simulations of both low-powered Fanaroff-Riley Type-I and high-powered …
Observations of the FR I radio galaxy Centaurus A in radio, X-ray and gamma-ray bands provide evidence for lepton acceleration up to several TeV and clues about hadron acceleration to tens of EeV. Synthesising the available observational constraints on the physical conditions and particle content in the jets, inner lobes and giant lobes of Centaurus A, we aim to evaluate its feasibility as an ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray source. We apply several methods of determining jet power and affirm the consistency of various power estimates of ~ 1 x 10^43 erg s^-1. Employing scaling relations based on p…
Blackbody-dominated (BBD) gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are events characterized by the absence of a typical afterglow, long durations and the presence of a significant thermal component following the prompt gamma-ray emission. GRB 101225A (the `Christmas burst') is a prototype of this class. A plausible progenitor system for it, and for the BBD-GRBs, is the merger of a neutron star (NS) and a helium core of an evolved, massive star. Using relativistic hydrodynamic simulations we model the propagation of an ultrarelativistic jet through the enviroment created by such a merger and we compute the whol…
Microquasars, the local siblings of extragalactic quasars, are binary systems comprising a compact object and a companion star. By accreting matter from their companions, microquasars launch powerful winds and jets, influencing the interstellar environment around them. Steady gamma-ray emission is expected to rise from their central objects, or from interactions between their outflows and the surrounding medium. The latter prediction was recently confirmed with the detection of SS 433 at high (TeV) energies. In this report, we analyze more than ten years of GeV gamma-ray data from the Fermi Ga…
