One challenge of using nonlinear optical phenomena for practical applications is the need to perform phase-matching. Recently, epsilon-near-zero materials have been shown to demonstrate strong optical nonlinearities, in addition to their other unique properties. As suggested by their name, the permittivity of the material is close to zero for a certain wavelength range. We demonstrate that this small permittivity allows for efficient three-wave mixing interactions to take place in indium-tin-oxide thin films without the need for phase matching the pump and signal beams. The efficiency of the second-order nonlinear interactions is characterized, and cascaded three-wave mixing is demonstrated.
We investigated laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) generated on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) thin films with femtosecond laser pulses in the infrared region. Using pulses between 1.6 and 2.4 $μ$m central wavelength, we observed robust LIPSS morphologies with a periodicity close to $λ$/10. Supporting finite-difference time-domain calculations suggest that the surface forms are rooted in the field localization in the surface pits leading to a periodically increased absorption of the laser pulse energy that creates the observed periodic structures.
Photonic crystals can integrate plasmonic materials such as indium tin oxide (ITO) in their structure. Exploiting ITO plasmonic properties it is possible to tune the photonic band gap of the photonic crystal upon the application of an external stimuli. In this work, we have fabricated a one-dimensional multilayer photonic crystal via radiofrequency sputtering and we have triggered its optical response with ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. Upon photoexcitation we observe a change in the refractive index of indium tin oxide. Such effect has been used to create a photonic crystal that change it…
We experimentally demonstrate several electro-optical modulators based on transparent conducting oxides. Our previous work demonstrated the modulator structure on glass substrate with broadband bias polarity-dependent modulation. Further exploration shows similar modulation effect of the modulator on quartz and silicon substrate.
Thermo-optic (TO) phase shifters are very fundamental units in large-scale active silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs). However, due to the limitation of microheater materials with a trade-off between heating efficiency and absorption loss, designs reported so far typically suffer from slow response time, high power consumption, low yields, and so on. Here, we demonstrate an energy-efficient, fast-response, and low-loss TO phase shifter by introducing hydrogen-doped indium oxide (IHO) films as microheater, and the optimized electron concentration with enhanced mobility endows the IHO hi…
In this work, we observe plasmon induced hot electron extraction in a heterojunction between indium tin oxide nanocrystals and monolayer molybdenum disulphide. We study the sample with ultrafast differential transmission exciting the sample at 1750 nm where the intense localized plasmon surface resonance of the indium tin oxide nanocrystals is and where the monolayer molybdenum disulphide does not absorb light. With the excitation at 1750 nm we observe the excitonic features of molybdenum disulphide in the visible range, close to the exciton of molybdenum disulphide. Such phenomenon can be asc…
We investigate selective patterning of ultra-thin 20 nm Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) thin films on glass substrates, using 343, 515, and 1030 nm femtosecond (fs), and 1030 nm picoseconds (ps) laser pulses. An ablative removal mechanism is observed for all wavelengths at both femtosecond and picoseconds time-scales. The absorbed threshold fluence values were determined to be 12.5 mJ/cm2 at 343 nm, 9.68 mJ/cm2 at 515 nm, and 7.50 mJ/cm2 at 1030 nm for femtosecond and 9.14 mJ/cm2 at 1030 nm for picosecond laser exposure. Surface analysis of ablated craters using atomic force microscopy confirms that th…
In this work we study the optical properties, by means of the transfer matrix method, of one-dimensional photonic crystals in which layers of silica nanoparticles are alternated with layers of indium tin oxide nanoparticle (ITO) / titania nanoparticle mixture. The dielectric function of the mixed ITO/TiO$_{2}$ nanoparticle layer is carefully accounted for with a generalized Rayleigh equation for the ternary mixture ITO:TiO$_{2}$:air. We have studied the light transmission of the multilayer photonic crystal as a function of the ITO/TiO$_{2}$ ratio. We observe that, by increasing the ITO content…
We report a novel optical waveguide design of a hollow step index fiber modified with a thin layer of indium tin oxide (ITO). We show an excitation of highly confined waveguide mode in the proposed fiber near the wavelength where permittivity of ITO approaches zero. Due to the high field confinement within thin ITO shell inside the fiber, the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode can be characterized by a peak in modal loss of the hybrid waveguide. Our results show that such in-fiber excitation of ENZ mode is due to the coupling of the guided core mode to the thin-film ENZ mode. We also show that the p…
We report comparative experimental and theoretical studies of second and third harmonic generation from a 20nm-thick indium tin oxide layer in proximity of the epsilon-near-zero condition. Using a tunable OPA laser we record both spectral and angular dependence of the generated harmonic signals close to this particular point. In addition to the enhancement of the second harmonic efficiency close to the epsilon-near-zero wavelength, at oblique incidence third harmonic generation displays unusual behavior, predicted but not observed before. We implement a comprehensive, first-principles hydrodyn…

The predominant methods currently used to determine nonlinear optical constants like the nonlinear refractive index n2 or chi3 rely mostly on experimental, open and closed z-scan techniques and beam deflection methods. While these methods work well when the linear absorption is relatively small or negligible, the retrieval process is more complicated for a strongly scattering, dispersive or absorbing medium. The study of optics at the nanoscale in the ps or fs regimes demands the development of new theoretical tools experimental approaches, to extract and verify both linear and nonlinear optic…
The unique properties of the emerging photonic materials - conducting nitrides and oxides - especially their tailorability, large damage thresholds, and the so-called epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior, have enabled novel photonic phenomena spanning optical circuitry, tunable metasurfaces, and nonlinear optical devices. This work explores direct control of the optical properties of polycrystalline titanium nitride (TiN) and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) by tailoring the film thickness, and their potential for ENZ-enhanced photonic applications. We demonstrate that TiN-AZO bilayers act as Ferre…

Nonreciprocal ENZ-Dielectric Bilayers: Enhancement of Nonreciprocity from a Nonlinear Transparent Conducting Oxide Thin Film at Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) Frequency
As alternatives to conventional metals, new plasmonic materials offer many advantages in the rapidly growing fields of plasmonics and metamaterials. These advantages include low intrinsic loss, semiconductor-based design, compatibility with standard nanofabrication processes, tunability, and others. Transparent conducting oxides such as Al:ZnO, Ga:ZnO and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) enable many high-performance metamaterial devices operating in the near-IR. Transition-metal nitrides such as TiN or ZrN can be substitutes for conventional metals in the visible frequencies. In this paper we provide th…
Strong nonlinear materials have been sought after for decades for applications in telecommunications, sensing, and quantum optics. Gallium-doped zinc oxide is a II-VI transparent conducting oxide that shows promising nonlinearities similar to indium tin oxide and aluminum-doped zinc oxide for the telecommunications band. Here we explore its nonlinearities in the epsilon near zero (ENZ) region and show n2,eff values on the order of 4.5x10-3 cm2GW-1 for IR pumping on 200-300 nm thin films. Measuring nonlinear changes in transmission and reflection with a white light source probe in the near-IR w…
