Leveraging the potential of low-field Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), our study introduces the multimodal surface RF coil, a design tailored to overcome the limitations of conventional coils in this context. The inherent challenges of low-field MRI, notably suboptimal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the need for specialized RF coils, are effectively addressed by our novel design. The multimodal surface coil is characterized by a unique assembly of resonators, optimized for both B1 efficiency and low-frequency tuning capabilities, essential for low-field applications. This paper provides a thorough investigation of the conceptual framework, design intricacies, and bench test validation of the multimodal surface coil. Through detailed simulations and comparative analyses, we demonstrate its superior performance in terms of B1 field efficiency, outperforming conventional surface coils.
High impedance RF coils, such as self-decoupled coils, reduce the electromagnetic coupling between the coil elements and eliminates the use of complex decoupling technologies. Although the high impedance design promises excellent decoupling between the coil elements, it also results in high electric fields across the RF coil, leading to potential safety problems during imaging. It also causes B1 field asymmetry, ultimately leading to difficulties in imaging quantification. In this study, we propose and investigate using a high dielectric sheet to reduce the electric fields across the coil and …
Multi-nuclear radio-frequency (RF) coils at ultrahigh field strengths are challenging to develop due to the high operating frequency, increased electromagnetic interaction among the coil elements, and increased electromagnetic interaction between the coils and the subject. In this work, a triple-nuclear surface coil for 1H, 13C, and 31P for small animal metabolic imaging at 14.1 T is built by nesting three surface coil geometries: a lumped-element L-C loop coil, a butterfly coil, and a microstrip transmission line (MTL) resonator. The loop coil, butterfly coil, and MTL are tuned to 31P, 13C, a…
Purpose: To develop a rapid imaging framework for balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) that jointly reconstructs undersampled data (by a factor of R) across multiple coils (D) and multiple acquisitions (N). To devise a multi-acquisition coil compression technique for improved computational efficiency. Methods: The bSSFP image for a given coil and acquisition is modeled to be modulated by a coil sensitivity and a bSSFP profile. The proposed reconstruction by calibration over tensors (ReCat) recovers missing data by tensor interpolation over the coil and acquisition dimensions. Coil com…

The analytical expression for the signal-to-noise ratio of a slotted surface coil with an arbitrary number of slots was derived using the quasi-static approach. This surface coil based on the vane-type magnetron tube. To study the coil perfomance, the theoretical signal-to-noise ratio predictions of this coil design were computed using a different number of slots. Results were also compared with theoretical results obtained for a circular coil with similar dimensions. It can be appreciated that slotted surface coil performance improves as the number of coils increases and, outperformed the cir…
Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is a novel and versatile imaging modality developing towards human application. When up-scaling to human size, the sensitivity of the systems naturally drops as the coil sensitivity depends on the bore diameter. Thus, new methods to push the sensitivity limit further have to be investigated to cope for this loss. In this paper a dedicated surface coil for mice is developed, improving the sensitivity in cerebral imaging applications. Similar to MRI the developed surface coil improves the sensitivity due to the closer vicinity to the region of interest. With the d…
Magnetic resonance imaging systems rely on signal detection via radiofrequency coil arrays which, ideally, need to provide both bendability and form-fitting stretchability to conform to the imaging volume. However, most commercial coils are rigid and of fixed size with a substantial mean offset distance of the coil from the anatomy, which compromises the spatial resolution and diagnostic image quality as well as patient comfort. Here, we propose a soft and stretchable receive coil concept based on liquid metal and ultra-stretchable polymer that conforms closely to a desired anatomy. Moreover, …
In this work a mu=-1 metamaterial (MM) lens for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is demonstrated. MRI uses surface coils to detect the radiofrequency(RF) energy absorbed and emitted by the nuclear spins in the imaged object. The proposed MM lens manipulates the RF field detected by these surface coils, so that the coil sensitivity and spatial localization is substantially improved. Beyond this specific application, we feel that the reported results are the experimental confirmation of a new concept for the manipulation of RF field in MRI, which paves the way to many other interesting applicati…
Preclinical magnetic resonance imaging often requires the entire body of an animal to be imaged with sufficient quality. This is usually performed by combining regions scanned with small coils with high sensitivity or long scans using large coils with low sensitivity. Here, a metamaterial-inspired design employing of a parallel array of wires operating on the principle of eigenmode hybridization is used to produce a small animal whole-body imaging coil. The coil field distribution responsible for the coil field of view and sensitivity is simulated in an electromagnetic simulation package and t…

Microstrip lines are being used in MR applications due to their unique properties, such as reduced radiation loss, high-frequency capability, and reduced perturbation of sample loading to the RF coil compared to conventional coils. Here, we present the design of the 13-channel hybrid array consisting of 12 Microstrips, 1 volume half birdcage coil placed on the foot/ankle phantom, and high permittivity materials to cover the maximum area of the subject at 7T/300MHz. We demonstrate using electromagnetic simulations, magnetic field distribution, SAR performance, and the coupling performance of th…
In this contribution we present numerical and experimental results of a parametric quantitative study of radiative dipole antennas in a phased array configuration for efficient body magnetic resonance imaging at 7T via parallel transmission. For magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at ultrahigh fields (7T and higher) dipole antennas are commonly used in phased arrays, particularly for body imaging targets. This study reveals the effects of dipole positioning in the array (elevation of dipoles above the subject and inter-dipole spacing) on their mutual coupling, $B_1^{+}$ per $P_{acc}$ and $B_1^{+}…
Electromagnetic decoupling among a close-fitting or high-density transceiver RF array elements is required to maintain the integrity of the magnetic flux density from individual channel for enhanced performance in detection sensitivity and parallel imaging. High-impedance RF coils have demonstrated to be a prominent design method to circumvent these coupling issues. Yet, inherent characteristics of these coils have ramification on the B1 field efficiency and SNR. In this work, we propose a hairpin high impedance RF resonator design for highly decoupled multichannel transceiver arrays at ultrah…
Superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles can be used in a variety of medical applications like vascular or targeted imaging. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a promising tomographic imaging technique that allows visualizing the 3D nanoparticle distribution concentration in a non-invasive manner. The two main strengths of MPI are high temporal resolution and high sensitivity. While the first has been proven in the assessment of dynamic processes like cardiac imaging, it is unknown how far the detection limit of MPI can be lowered. Within this work, we will present a highly sensitive gradiom…

Purpose: To develop an ESPIRiT-based method to estimate coil sensitivities with image phase as a building block for efficient and robust image reconstruction with phase constraints. Theory and Methods: ESPIRiT is a new framework for calibration of the coil sensitivities and reconstruction in parallel Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Applying ESPIRiT to a combined set of physical and virtual conjugate coils (VCC-ESPIRiT) implicitly exploits conjugate symmetry in k-space similar to VCC-GRAPPA. Based on this method, a new post-processing step is proposed for the explicit computation of coil sens…
It is technically challenging to design efficient transceiver coil arrays for foot and ankle imaging at ultrahigh fields due to the irregular geometry of the anatomy. Shortened wavelength because of the high operation frequency at ultrahigh fields increases phase variation, leading to inhomogeneous B1 distribution in the imaging sample. In this work, we propose a hybrid design with mixed L-C loops and microstrip resonators for multichannel foot/ankle transceiver arrays at the ultrahigh field of 7T. The proposed transceiver array consists of 14 microstrip resonators and 5 L-C loop coils to cove…
Here we propose double-coil setup to allow high signal-to-noise ratio broad-range heteronuclear magnetic resonance imaging experiments: two independent coils, one of them tuned to $^{1}$H frequency to perform anatomical $^{1}$H imaging, and another one, metamaterial-inspired coil, tuned to the X-nucleus frequency. In this work our goal was to design a broad-range X-nuclei coil to cover $^{2}$H, $^{11}$B, $^{13}$C, $^{23}$Na, $^{7}$Li and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance frequencies, and to combine it with $^{1}$H coil in one setup. The system was designed for 11.7 T scanner, i.e., with 76-2…
Purpose: Universal Pulses (UPs) are excitation pulses that reduce the flip angle inhomogeneity in high field MRI systems without subject-specific optimization, originally developed for parallel transmit (PTX) systems at 7T. We investigated the potential benefits of UPs for single channel (SC) transmit systems at 3T, which are widely used for clinical and research imaging, and for which flip angle inhomogeneity can still be problematic. Methods: SC-UPs were designed using a spiral nonselective k-space trajectory for brain imaging at 3T using transmit field maps (B1+) and off-resonance maps (B0)…
A volume coil with squared slots-end ring was developed to attain improved sensitivity for imaging of rat's brain at 7 T. The principles of the high cavity resonator for the low-pass case and the law of Biot-Savart were used to derive a theoretical expression of the coil sensitivity. The slotted-end ring resonator showed a theoretical 2.22-fold improvement over the standard birdcage coil with similar dimensions. Numerical studies were carried out for the electromagnetic fields and specific absorption rates for our coil and a birdcage coil loaded with a saline-filled cylindrical phantom and a d…
Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is an emerging medical imaging modality that is not yet adopted by clinical practice. Most of the working MPI prototypes including commercial-grade research MPI scanners utilize cylindrical bores that limit the access to the scanner and the imaging volume. Recently a single-sided or an asymmetric device that is based on a field-free point (FFP) coplanar coil topology has been introduced that shows promise in alleviating access constraint issues. In this paper, we present a simulation study of selection coils for a novel design of a single-sided MPI device that h…
Recently, metamaterials have been introduced to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of magnetic resonance images with very promising results. However, the use polymers in the generation of high quality images in magnetic resonance imaging has not been fully been investigated. These investigations explored the use of a dielectric periodical array as a lens to improve the image SNR generated with single surface coils. Commercial polycarbonate glazing sheets were used together with a circular coil to generate phantom images at 3 Tesla on a clinical MR imager.
The paper proposes the design of a tri-mode coupled coil which enables three modes of operation for inducing electromagnetic field, where the focal adjustment of the E field can be optimized. Methods: The setup consists of two identical figure-of-eight coils, namely coil 1 and coil 2, coupled to each other by magnetic resonance coupling. Coil 1 is driven by active source, where coil 2 is driven by the magnetic field coupled from coil 1. The frequency of operation would affect the coupling between the coils and hence the current ratios induced. Results: In the first and the second modes, the cu…
Waveguides have been successfully used to generate magnetic resonance images at 7 T with whole-body systems. The bore limits the magnetic resonance signal transmitted because its specific cut-off frequency is greater than the majority of resonant frequencies. This restriction can be overcome by using a parallel-plate waveguide whose cut-off frequency is zero for the transversal electric modes and it can propagate any frequency. To investigate the potential benefits for whole-body imaging at 3 T, we compare numerical simulations at 1.5 T, 3 T, 7 T, and 9 T via the propagation of the parallel-pl…

Methods: We designed a transmit-receive RF coil with $8$ decoupled channels for $7$T head imaging. We calculated the RF transmit field ($B_1^+$) inside heterogeneous head models for different RF shimming approaches, and used them as input for GMT to reco…
'Coil design' is an inverse problem in which arrangements of wire are designed to generate a prescribed magnetic field when energized with electric current. The design of gradient and shim coils for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are important examples of coil design. The magnetic fields that these coils generate are usually required to be both strong and accurate. Other electromagnetic properties of the coils, such as inductance, may be considered in the design process, which becomes an optimization problem. The maximum current density is additionally optimized in this work and the resultan…

Although deep learning (DL) has received much attention in accelerated MRI, recent studies suggest small perturbations may lead to instabilities in DL-based reconstructions, leading to concern for their clinical application. However, these works focus on single-coil acquisitions, which is not practical. We investigate instabilities caused by small adversarial attacks for multi-coil acquisitions. Our results suggest that, parallel imaging and multi-coil CS exhibit considerable instabilities against small adversarial perturbations.

The fastMRI dataset, unique in that it contains large volumes of raw MRI data, has enabled significant advances in accelerating MRI using deep learning-based reconstruction methods. While the impact of the fastMRI dataset on the field of medical imaging is unquestioned, the dataset currently lacks clinical expert pathology annotations, critical to addressing clinically relevant reconstruction frameworks an…
We previously presented a lock-in-amplifier model for analyzing the behavior of signal harmonics in magnetic particle imaging (MPI). The purpose of the current study was to investigate the behavior of signal harmonics in MPI with the drive magnetic field being applied to the selection magnetic field in an …

In this paper we propose, design and test a new dual-nuclei RF-coil inspired by wire metamaterial structures. The coil operates due to resonant excitation of hybridized eigenmodes in multimode flat periodic structures comprising several coupled thin metal strips. It was shown that the field distribution of the coil (i.e. penetration depth) can be controlled independently at two different Larmor frequencies by selecting a proper eigenmode in each of two mutually orthogonal periodic structures. The proposed coil requires no lumped capacitors for tuning and matching. In order to demonstrate the p…
