Solutions of long, flexible polymer molecules are complex fluids that simultaneously exhibit fluid-like and solid-like behaviour. When subjected to an external flow, dilute polymer solutions exhibit elastic turbulence - a unique, chaotic flow state absent in Newtonian fluids, like water. Unlike its Newtonian counterpart, elastic turbulence is caused by polymer molecules stretching and aligning in the flow, and can occur at vanishing inertia. While experimental realisations of elastic turbulence are well-documented, there is currently no understanding of its mechanism. Here, we present large-scale direct numerical simulations of elastic turbulence in pressure-driven flows through straight channels. We demonstrate that the transition to elastic turbulence is sub-critical, giving rise to spot-like flow structures that, further away from the transition, eventually spread throughout the domain. We provide evidence that elastic turbulence is organised around unstable coherent states that are localised close to the channel midplane.
We present a combined experimental, numerical and theoretical investigation of the geometric scaling of the onset of a purely-elastic flow instability in a serpentine channel. Good qualitative agreement is obtained between experiments, using dilute solutions of flexible polymers in microfluidic devices, and two-dimensional numerical simulations using the UCM model. The results are confirmed by a simple theoretical analysis, based on the dimensionless criterion proposed by Pakdel-McKinley for onset of a purely-elastic instability.
In a viscoelastic flow over a microfluidic canopy of polymeric pillars, we report the spontaneous emergence of waves in the form of propagating regions of low flow velocity compared to the surrounding flow. The occurrence of the wave is chaotic and shows characteristics of elastic turbulence. We systematically study the coupling between the low velocity wave and the microfluidic canopy by combining flow velocimetry experiments and high speed tracking of the pillars. The waves form an angle $β$ with the primary flow direction that depends on the geometry of the pillar array. If the canopy is co…
We study the statistical properties of spatially averaged global injected power fluctuations for Taylor-Couette flow of a worm-like micellar gel formed by surfactant CTAT. At sufficiently high Weissenberg numbers (Wi) the shear rate and hence the injected power p(t) at a constant applied stress shows large irregular fluctuations in time. The nature of the probability distribution function (pdf) of p(t) and the power-law decay of its power spectrum are very similar to that observed in recent studies of elastic turbulence for polymer solutions. Remarkably, these non-Gaussian pdfs can be well des…
In the past twenty years, shear-banding flows have been probed by various techniques, such as rheometry, velocimetry and flow birefringence. In micellar solutions, many of the data collected exhibit unexplained spatio-temporal fluctuations. Recently, it has been suggested that those fluctuations originate from a purely elastic instability of the flow. In cylindrical Couette geometry, the instability is reminiscent of the Taylor-like instability observed in viscoelastic polymer solutions. In this letter, we describe how the criterion for purely elastic Taylor-Couette instability should be adapt…
Speed of sound waves in gases and liquids is governed by medium compressibility. There exists another type of non-dispersive waves which speed depends on stress instead of medium elasticity. A well-known example is the Alfven wave propagating, with a speed determined by a magnetic tension, in plasma permeated by a magnetic field. Later, an elastic analog of the Alfven waves has been predicted in a flow of dilute polymer solution, where elastic stress engendered by polymer stretching determines the elastic wave speed. Here, we present quantitative evidence of elastic Alfven waves observed in el…
This movie illustrates the recent numerical and experimental discovery of a new state of turbulence in dilute polymer solutions, Elasto-Inertial Turbulence. Elasto-inertial turbulence is characterized by a chaotic flow state in which both inertial and elastic effects, whose relative contributions vary with the Reynolds number, control the flow dynamics.
We show that, at low inertia and large elasticity, shell models of viscoelastic fluids develop a chaotic behaviour with properties similar to those of elastic turbulence. The low dimensionality of shell models allows us to explore a wide range both in polymer concentration and in Weissenberg number. Our results demonstrate that the physical mechanisms at the origin of elastic turbulence do not rely on the boundary conditions or on the geometry of the mean flow.
We report evidence of irregular unsteady flow of two-dimensional polymer solutions in the absence of inertia in cross-slot geometry using numerical simulations of Oldroyd-B model. By exploring the transition to time-dependent flow versus both the fluid elasticity and the polymer concentration, we find periodic behaviour close to the instability threshold and more complex flows at larger elasticity, in agreement with experimental findings. For high enough elasticity we obtain dynamics pointing to elastic turbulence, with temporal spectra of velocity fluctuations showing a power-law decay, of ex…
We demonstrate through numerical solutions of the Oldroyd-B model in a two-dimensional Taylor-Couette geometry that the onset of elastic turbulence in a viscoelastic fluid can be controlled by imposed shear-rate modulations. While for slow modulations elastic turbulence is still present, it vanishes for fast modulations and a laminar response with the Taylor-Couette base flow is recovered. We find that the transition from the laminar to the turbulent state is supercritical and occurs at a critical Deborah number. In the state diagram of both control parameters, Weissenberg versus Deborah numbe…
We report frictional drag reduction and a complete flow re-laminarization of elastic turbulence (ET) at vanishing inertia in a viscoelastic channel flow past an obstacle. We show that intensity of observed elastic waves and wall-normal vorticity correlate well with the measured drag above the ET onset. Moreover, we find that the elastic wave frequency grows with Weissenberg number, and at sufficiently high frequency it causes decay of the elastic waves, resulting in ET attenuation and drag reduction. Thus, this allows us to substantiate a physical mechanism, involving interaction of elastic wa…
I shortly describe the main results on elastically driven instabilities and elastic turbulence in viscoelastic inertia-less flows with curved streamlines. Then I describe a theory of elastic turbulence and prediction of elastic waves at Re<<1 and Wi>>1, which speed depends on the elastic stress similarly to the Alfven waves in magneto-hydrodynamics and in in a contrast to all other fluid flows with wave speed depending on medium elasticity. Since the established and testified mechanism of elastic instability of viscoelastic flows with curvilinear streamlines becomes ineffective at zero curvatu…
Recent progress in the study of Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes (CHNS) turbulence is summarized. This is an example of \textit{elastic turbulence}, which can occur in elastic (i.e. self-restoring) media. Such media exhibit memory due freezing-in laws, as does MHD, which in turn constrains the dynamics. We report new results in the theory of CHNS turbulence in 2D, with special emphasis on the role of structure (i.e. `blob') formation and its interaction with the dual cascade. The evolution of a concentration gradient in response to a single eddy -- analogous to flux expulsion in MHD -- is analyzed.…
We perform a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the forced, incompressible two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation coupled with the FENE-P equations for the polymer-conformation tensor. The forcing is such that, without polymers and at low Reynolds numbers $\mbox{Re}$, the film attains a steady state that is a square lattice of vortices and anti-vortices. We find that, as we increase the Weissenberg number $\mbox{Wi}$, a sequence of nonequilibrium phase transitions transforms this lattice, first to spatially distorted, but temporally steady, crystals and then to a sequence of crystals that os…
We investigate theoretically the near-wall region in elastic turbulence of a dilute polymer solution in the limit of large Weissenberg number. As it was established experimentally, elastic turbulence possesses a boundary layer where the fluid velocity field can be approximated by a steady shear flow with relatively small fluctuations on the top of it. Assuming that at the bottom of the boundary layer the dissolved polymers can be considered as passive objects, we examine analytically and numerically statistics of the polymer conformation, which is highly nonuniform in the wall-normal direction…
Recent studies of pressure-driven flows of dilute polymer solutions in straight channels demonstrated the existence of two-dimensional coherent structures that are disconnected from the laminar state and appear through a sub-critical bifurcation from infinity. These travelling-wave solutions were suggested to organise the phase-space dynamics of purely elastic and elasto-inertial chaotic channel flows. Here, we consider a wide range of parameters, covering the purely-elastic and elasto-inertial cases, and demonstrate that the two-dimensional travelling-wave solutions are unstable when embedded…
In the present study, we investigated flow structures and properties of elastic turbulence in straight 2D channel viscoelastic fluid flow and tested earlier observations. We discovered self-organized cycling process of weakly unstable coherent structures (CSs) of co-existing streaks and stream-wise vortices, with the former being destroyed by Kelvin-Helmholtz-like instability resulting in chaotic structures. The sequence periodically repeats itself leading to stochastically steady state. This self-sustained process (SSP) remarkably resembles one investigated theoretically and experimentally fo…
We report the onset of elastic turbulence in a two-dimensional Taylor-Couette geometry using numerical solutions of the Oldroyd-B model, also performed at high Weissenberg numbers with the program OpenFOAM. Beyond a critical Weissenberg number, an elastic instability causes a supercritical transition from the laminar Taylor-Couette to a turbulent flow. The order parameter, the time average of secondary-flow strength, follows the scaling law $Φ\propto (\mathrm{Wi} -\mathrm{Wi}_c)^γ$ with $\mathrm{Wi}_c=10$ and $γ= 0.45$. The power spectrum of the velocity fluctuations shows a power-law decay wi…
Elastic turbulence is a chaotic regime that emerges in polymer solutions at low Reynolds numbers. A common way to ensure stability in numerical simulations of polymer solutions is to add artificially large polymer-stress diffusion. In order to assess the accuracy of this approach in the elastic-turbulence regime, we compare numerical simulations of the two-dimensional Oldroyd-B and FENE-P models sustained by a cellular force with and without artificial diffusion. We find that artificial diffusion can have a dramatic effect even on the large-scale properties of the flow and we show some of the …
We study the dynamical regime of wave turbulence of a vibrated thin elastic plate based on experimental and numerical observations. We focus our study to the strongly non linear regime described in a previous letter by N. Yokoyama & M. Takaoka. At small forcing, a weakly non linear regime is compatible with the Weak Turbulence Theory when the dissipation is localized at high wavenumber. When the forcing intensity is increased, a strongly non linear regime emerges: singular structures dominate the dynamics at large scale whereas at small scales the weak turbulence is still present. A turbulence…
We report detailed quantitative studies of elastic turbulence in a curvilinear channel flow in a dilute polymer solution of high molecular weight polyacrylamide in a high viscosity water-sugar solvent. Detailed studies of the average and rms velocity and velocity gradients profiles reveal an emergence of the boundary layer associated with the nonuniform distribution of the elastic stresses across the channel. The characteristic boundary width is independent of the Weissenberg number Wi and proportional to the channel width that follows from our early investigations of the boundary layer in ela…
We report experimental results on the decay of wave turbulence in an elastic plate obtained by stopping the forcing from a stationary turbulent state. In the stationary case, the forcing is seen to induce some anisotropy and a spectrum in disagreement with the weak turbulence theory. After stopping the forcing, almost perfect isotropy is restored. The decay of energy is self similar and the observed decaying spectrum is in better agreement with the prediction of the weak turbulence theory. The dissipative part of the spectrum is partially consistent with the theoretical prediction based on pre…
In elastic-wave turbulence, strong turbulence appears in small wave numbers while weak turbulence does in large wave numbers. Energy transfers in the coexistence of these turbulent states are numerically investigated in both of the Fourier space and the real space. An analytical expression of a detailed energy balance reveals from which mode to which mode energy is transferred in the triad interaction. Stretching energy excited by external force is transferred nonlocally and intermittently to large wave numbers as the kinetic energy in the strong turbulence. In the weak turbulence, the resonan…
We investigate the dynamics of the two-dimensional periodic Kolmogorov flow of a viscoelastic fluid, described by the Oldroyd-B model, by means of direct numerical simulations. Above a critical Weissenberg number the flow displays a transition from stationary to randomly fluctuating states, via periodic ones. The increasing complexity of the flow in both time and space at progressively higher values of elasticity accompanies the establishment of mixing features. The peculiar dynamical behavior observed in the simulations is found to be related to the appearance of filamental propagating patter…

We present the full three-dimensional numerical investigation of the von Karman swirling flow between two parallel plates using the Oldroyd-B model and characterize the onset and development of elastic turbulence. We quantify the flow state with the secondary-flow strength, a measure of the average strength of the velocity fluctuations, and then define an order parameter as the time average of the secondary-flow strength. The order parameter displays a subcritical transition from the laminar to a bistable flow that switches between weakly chaotic flow and elastic turbulence. The transition to …
When subjected to sufficiently strong velocity gradients, solutions of long, flexible polymers exhibit flow instabilities and chaotic motion, often referred to as elastic turbulence. Its mechanism differs from the familiar, inertia-driven turbulence in Newtonian fluids, and is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that the dynamics of purely elastic pressure-driven channel flows of dilute polymer solutions are organised by exact coherent structures that take the form of two-dimensional travelling waves. Our results demonstrate that no linear instability is required to sustain such travelling…
Low-Reynolds-number polymer solutions exhibit a chaotic behaviour known as 'elastic turbulence' when the Weissenberg number exceeds a critical value. The two-dimensional Oldroyd-B model is the simplest constitutive model that reproduces this phenomenon. To make a practical estimate of the resolution scale of the dynamics requires an assumption that an attractor of the Oldroyd-B model exists : numerical simulations show that the quantities on which this assumption is based are bounded. We estimate the Lyapunov dimension of this assumed attractor as a function of the Weissenberg number by combin…

To simulate elastic turbulence, where viscoelasticity dominates, numerical solvers introduce an artificial stress diffusivity term to handle the steep polymer stress gradients that ensue. This has recently been shown [Gupta & Vincenzi, J. Fluid Mech. 870, 405-418 (2019); Dzanic, From & Sauret, J. Fluid Mech. 937, A31 (2022)] to introduce unphysical artifacts with a detrimental impact on simulations. In this Letter, we propose that artificial diffusion is limited to regions where stress gradients are steep instead of seeking the zero-diffusivity limit. Through the cellular forcing and four-roll…
We study single-phase and particulate turbulent channel flows, bounded by two incompressible hyper-elastic walls. Different wall elasticities are considered with and without a 10% volume fraction of finite-size rigid spherical particles, while elastic walls are modelled as a neo-Hookean material. We report a significant drag increase and an enhancement of the turbulence activity with growing wall elasticity for both single-phase and particulate cases in comparison with the single-phase flow over rigid walls. A drag reduction and a turbulence attenuation is obtained for the particulate cases wi…
Small flexible fibers in a turbulent flow are found to be most of the time as straight as stiff rods. This is due to the cooperative action of flexural rigidity and fluid stretching. However, fibers might bend and buckle when they tumble and experience a strong-enough local compressive shear. Such events are similar to an activation process, where the role of temperature is played by the inverse of Young's modulus. Numerical simulations show that buckling occurs very intermittently in time. This results from unexpected long-range Lagrangian correlations of the turbulent shear.
We numerically investigate the spatial and temporal statistical properties of a dilute polymer solution in the elastic turbulence regime, i.e., in the chaotic flow state occurring at vanishing Reynolds and high Weissenberg numbers. We aim at elucidating the relations between measurements of flow properties performed in the spatial domain with the ones taken in the temporal domain, which is a key point for the interpretation of experimental results on elastic turbulence and to discuss the validity of Taylor's hypothesis. To this end, we carry out extensive direct numerical simulations of the tw…
We experimentally investigate the flow of a viscoelastic fluid in a parallel shear geometry at low Reynolds number. As the flow becomes unstable via a nonlinear subcritical instability, velocimetry measurements show non-periodic fluctuations over a broad range of frequencies and wavelengths, consistent with the main features of elastic turbulence. Using the same experimental setup, we compare these features to those in the flow around cylinders, which is upstream to the parallel shear region; we find significant differences in power spectra scaling, intermittency statistics, and flow structure…
We study the fully-coupled dynamics between a fully-developed turbulent flow and an ensemble of immersed flexible fibers. We vary the concentration of the suspension, the mechanical properties and the length of the fibers in a vast parametric range. For all configurations, the fiber dynamics falls in only two possible dynamical states: (i) the fiber manifests its natural response to the flow forcing or (ii) its motion fully synchronizes to the hydrodynamic timescales of the turbulent flow. This scenario holds for both a dilute condition, where the carrier flow is not affected by the fluid-stru…
We use direct numerical simulations to study homogeneous, and isotropic turbulent flows of dilute polymer solutions at high Reynolds and Deborah numbers. We find that for small wavenumbers $k$, the kinetic energy spectrum shows Kolmogorov--like behavior which crosses over at a larger $k$ to a novel, elastic scaling regime, $E(k) \sim k^{-ξ}$, with $ξ\approx 2.3$. We study the contribution of the polymers to the flux of kinetic energy through scales, and find that it can be decomposed into two parts: one increase in effective viscous dissipation, and a purely elastic contribution that dominates…
Weak Wave Turbulence is a powerful theory to predict statistical observables of diverse relevant physical phenomena, such as ocean waves, magnetohydrodynamics and nonlinear optics. The theory is based upon an asymptotic closure permitted in the limit of small nonlinearity. Here, we explore the possible deviations from this mean-field framework, in terms of anomalous scaling, focusing on the case of elastic plates. We establish the picture of the possible behaviors at varying the extent of nonlinearity, and we show that the mean-field theory is appropriate when all excited scales remain dominat…
Viscoelastic fluids are a subclass of complex fluids used in widespread applications ranging from biological to large-scale industrial settings. These fluids are often associated with various complex flow phenomena due to the presence of non-linear elastic stresses, originating due to the stretching and relaxation phenomena of microstructure (such as polymer molecules in the case of a viscoelastic polymer solution) in a deformed flow field. One such phenomenon is elastic instability (EI) which emerges due to the interaction between elastic stresses and streamline curvature present in a flow sy…
We report numerical investigations of wave turbulence in a vibrating plate. The possibility to implement advanced measurement techniques and long time numerical simulations makes this system extremely valuable for wave turbulence studies. The purely 2D character of dynamics of the elastic plate makes it much simpler to handle compared to much more complex 3D physical systems that are typical of geo- and astrophysical issues (ocean surface or internal waves, magnetized plasmas or strongly rotating and/or stratified flows). When the forcing is small the observed wave turbulence is consistent wit…
