When subjected to sufficiently strong velocity gradients, solutions of long, flexible polymers exhibit flow instabilities and chaotic motion, often referred to as elastic turbulence. Its mechanism differs from the familiar, inertia-driven turbulence in Newtonian fluids, and is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that the dynamics of purely elastic pressure-driven channel flows of dilute polymer solutions are organised by exact coherent structures that take the form of two-dimensional travelling waves. Our results demonstrate that no linear instability is required to sustain such travelling wave solutions, and that their origin is purely elastic in nature. We show that the associated stress profiles are characterised by thin, filament-like arrangements of polymer stretch, which is sustained by a solitary pair of vortices. We discuss the implications of the travelling wave solutions for the transition to elastic turbulence in straight channels, and propose ways for their detection in experiments.
We investigate the steady-state extensional rheology of a dilute suspension of spherical particles in a dilute polymer solution. For a particle-free polymeric fluid, in addition to the solvent viscosity, the extensional viscosity due to the polymers, $μ^\text{poly}$, contributes to the total non-dimensionalized extensional viscosity $1+μ^\text{poly}$. When a small volume fraction, $ϕ$, of spheres is added to a polymeric fluid, the stress is altered by the Einstein viscosity of 2.5$ϕ$ and two additional stress contributions: the interaction stresslet and the particle-induced polymer stress (PIP…
As a stiff polymer tumbles in shear flow, it experiences compressive viscous forces that can cause it to buckle and undergo a sequence of morphological transitions with increasing flow strength. We use numerical simulations to uncover the effects of these transitions on the steady shear rheology of a dilute suspension of stiff polymers. Our results agree with classic scalings for Brownian rods in relatively weak flows but depart from them above the buckling threshold. Signatures of elastoviscous buckling include enhanced shear thinning and an increase in the magnitude of normal stress differen…
The viscoelastic behavior of polymer solutions is commonly measured using oscillating shear rheometry, however, the accuracy of such methods is limited by the oscillating frequency of the equipment and since the relaxation time of the dilute polymer solutions is short, this requires measurement at very high frequencies. Microrheology has been proposed to overcome this technical challenge. Yet the equipment for resolving the statistics of particle displacements in microrheology is expensive. In this work, we measured the viscoelastic behavior of Methocel solutions at various concentrations usin…
We report experimental measurements of Lagrangian accelerations in the bulk of intense turbulent flows of dilute polymer solutions by following tracer particles with a high-speed optical tracking system. We observed a significant decrease in the acceleration variance in dilute polymer solutions. The shape of the normalized acceleration probability density functions, however, remain the same as in Newtonian water flows. We also observed an increase in the turbulent Lagrangian acceleration autocorrelation time in these dilute polymer solutions.
We investigate previously unclarified effects of fluid elasticity on shear-thickening in dilute suspensions in an Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluid using a novel direct numerical simulation based on the smoothed profile method. Fluid elasticity is determined by the Weissenberg number Wi and by viscosity ratio $1-β=η_p/(η_s+η_p)$ which measures the coupling between the polymer stress and flow: $η_p$ and $η_s$ are the polymer and solvent viscosity, respectively. As $1-β$ increases, while the stresslet does not change significantly compared to that in the $β\to 1$ limit, the growth rate of the normaliz…
Nonlinear behavior of electro-osmosis in dilute non-adsorbing polymer solutions with low salinity is investigated with Brownian dynamics simulations and a kinetic theory. In the Brownian simulations, the hydrodynamic interaction between the polymers and a no-slip wall is considered with Rotne-Prager approximation of Blake tensor. In a plug flow under a sufficiently strong applied electric field, the polymer migrates toward the bulk, forming a depletion layer thicker than the equilibrium one. Consequently, the electro-osmotic mobility increases nonlinearly with the electric field and gets satur…
We study the physics of turbulent/non-turbulent interface of an isolated turbulent region in dilute polymer solutions and Newtonian fluid. The performance of a FENE-P model with a localized homogeneous forcing is verified using the specially designed experimental setup of a turbulent patch growing in water/dilute polymer solution, without mean shear and far from the walls. The results of the small scale dynamics of vorticity and strain help to reveal the key mechanism of polymer action in turbulent flows without mean shear. Modified degrees of alignment between vorticity, the polymer conformat…
We study the effect of diluted flexible polymers on a disordered capillary wave state. The waves are generated at an interface of a dyed water sugar solution and a low viscous silicon oil. This allows for a quantitative measurement of the spatio-temporal Fourier spectrum. The primary pattern after the first bifurcation from the flat interface are squares. With increasing driving strength we observe a melting of the square pattern. It is replaced by a weak turbulent cascade. The addition of a small amount of polymers to the water layer does not affect the critical acceleration but shifts the di…
We provide a Boltzmann-type kinetic description for dilute polymer solutions based on two-fluid theory. This Boltzmann-type description uses a quasi-equilibrium based relaxation mechanism to model collisions between a polymer dumbbell and a solvent molecule. The model reproduces the desired macroscopic equations for the polymer-solvent mixture. The proposed kinetic scheme leads to a numerical algorithm which is along the lines of the lattice Boltzmann method. Finally, the algorithm is applied to describe the evolution of a perturbed Kolmogorov flow profile, whereby we recover the major elastic…
Recently singular solutions have been discovered in purely elongational flows of visco-elastic fluids. We surmise that these solutions are the mathematical structures underlying the so-called birefringent strands seen experimentally. In order to facilitate future experimental studies of these we derive a number of asymptotic results for the scaling of the width and extension of the near-singular structures in the FENE-P model for polymers of finite extensibility.
We study the dynamics of a dilute solution of rigid rodlike polymers in a viscous fluid at low Reynolds number by means of numerical simulations of a simple rheological model. We show that the rotational dynamics of polymers destabilizes the laminar flow and causes the emergence of a turbulent-like chaotic flow with a wide range of active scales. This regime displays an increased flow resistance, corresponding to a reduced mean flow at fixed external forcing, as well as an increased mixing efficiency. The latter effect is quantified by measuring the decay of the variance of a scalar field tran…
In fully developed three dimensional fluid turbulence the fluctuating energy is supplied at large scales, cascades through intermediate scales, and dissipates at small scales. It is the hallmark of turbulence that for intermediate scales, in the so called inertial range, the average energy flux is constant and independent of viscosity [1-3]. One very important question is how this range is altered, when an additional agent that can also transport energy is added to the fluid. Long-chain polymers dissolved at very small concentrations in the fluid are such an agent [4,5]. Based on prior work by…
Extensional rheometry of mobile fluids. Part II: Comparison between the uniaxial, planar and biaxial extensional rheology of dilute polymer solutions using numerically-optimized stagnation point microfluidic devices
Drag reduction by polymers in turbulent wall-bounded flows exhibits universal and non-universal aspects. The universal maximal mean velocity profile was explained in a recent theory. The saturation of this profile and the crossover back to the Newtonian plug are non-universal, depending on Reynolds number Re, concentration of polymer $c_p$ and the degree of polymerization $N_p$. We explain the mechanism of saturation stemming from the finiteness of extensibility of the polymers, predict its dependence on $c_p$ and $N$ in the limit of small $c_p$ and large Re, and present the excellent comparis…
We consider stagnation point flow away from a wall for creeping flow of dilute polymer solutions. For a simplified flow geometry, we explicitly show that a narrow region of strong polymer extension (a birefringent strand) forms downstream of the stagnation point in the UCM model and extensions, like the FENE-P model. These strands are associated with the existence of an essential singularity in the stresses, which is induced by the fact that the stagnation point makes the convective term in the constitutive equation into a singular point. We argue that the mechanism is quite general, so that a…
We study the inertial migration of finite-size neutrally buoyant spherical particles in dilute and semi-dilute suspensions in laminar square duct flow. We perform several direct numerical simulations using an immersed boundary method to investigate the effects of the bulk Reynolds number $Re_b$, particle Reynolds number $Re_p$ and duct to particle size ratio $h/a$ at different solid volume fractions $ϕ$, from very dilute conditions to $20\%$. We show that the bulk Reynolds number $Re_b$ is the key parameter in inertial migration of particles in dilute suspensions. At low solid volume fraction …
The migration of a Brownian fluid droplet in a parallel-plate microchannel was investigated using dissipative particle dynamics computer simulations. In a Newtonian solvent, the droplet migrated toward the channel walls due to inertial effects at the studied flow conditions, in agreement with theoretical predictions and recent simulations. However, the droplet focused onto the channel centerline when polymer chains were added to the solvent. Focusing was typically enhanced for longer polymers and higher polymer concentrations with a nontrivial flow-rate dependence due to droplet and polymer de…
Elasto-inertial turbulence is a new state of turbulence found in flows with polymer additives . The dynamics of turbulence generated and controlled by such additives is investigated from the perspective of the coupling between polymer dynamics and flow structures. Direct numerical simulations of channel flow with Reynolds numbers ranging from 1000 to 6000 (based on the bulk and the channel height) are used to study the formation and dynamics of elastic instabilities and their effects on the flow. The resulting mechanism of interactions between polymer dynamics and the flow helps resolve a long…
Microfluidic technologies are commonly used for the manipulation of red blood cell (RBC) suspensions and analyses of flow-mediated biomechanics. To enhance the performance of microfluidic devices, understanding the dynamics of the suspensions processed within is crucial. We report novel aspects of the spatio-temporal dynamics of RBC suspensions flowing through a typical microchannel at low Reynolds number. Through experiments with dilute RBC suspensions, we find an off-centre two-peak (OCTP) profile of cells contrary to the centralised distribution commonly reported for low-inertia flows. This…
The goal of the present study is: (i) to demonstrate the two-dimensional nature of the elasto-inertial instability in elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT), (ii) to identify the role of the bi-dimensional instability in three-dimensional EIT flows and (iii) to establish the role of the small elastic scales in the mechanism of self-sustained EIT. Direct numerical simulations of FENE-P fluid flows are performed in two- and three-dimensional channels. The Reynolds number is set to $\mathrm{Re}_τ= 85$ which is sub-critical for 2D flows but beyond transition for 3D ones. The polymer properties correspon…
Behavior of a dilute polymer solution in a random three-dimensional flow with an average shear is studied experimentally. Polymer contribution to the shear stress is found to be more than two orders of magnitude higher than in a laminar shear flow. The results indicate that the polymer molecules get strongly stretched by the random motion of the fluid.
We investigate the mechanisms by which inertial particles dispersed at semi-dilute conditions cause significant drag-reduction in a turbulent channel flow at $\mathrm{Re}_τ= 180$. We consider a series of four-way coupled Euler-Lagrange simulations where particles having friction Stokes number $\mathrm{St}^+ = 6$ or 30 are introduced at progressively increasing mass loading from $M=0.2$ to 1.0. The simulations show that $\mathrm{St}^+ = 30$ particles cause large drag-reduction by up to 19.74\% at $M=1.0$, whereas $\mathrm{St}^+ = 6$ particles cause large drag increase by up to 16.92\% at $M=1.0…
We show that viscoelastic plane Poiseuille flow becomes linearly unstable in the absence of inertia, in the limit of high elasticities, for ultra-dilute polymer solutions. While inertialess elastic instabilities have been predicted for curvilinear shear flows, this is the first ever report of a purely elastic linear instability in a rectilinear shear flow. The novel instability continues upto a Reynolds number ($Re$) of $O(1000)$, corresponding to the recently identified elasto-inertial turbulent state believed to underlie the maximum-drag-reduced regime. Thus, for highly elastic ultra-dilute …
The motility behavior of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans in polymeric solutions of varying concentrations is systematically investigated in experiments using tracking and velocimetry methods. As the polymer concentration is increased, the solution undergoes a transition from the semi-dilute to the concentrated regime, where these rod-like polymers entangle, align, and form networks. Remarkably, we find an enhancement in the nematode's swimming speed of approximately 65% in concentrated solutions compared to semi-dilute solutions. Using velocimetry methods, we show that the undulatory swimm…
Amplification of deterministic disturbances in inertialess shear-driven channel flows of viscoelastic fluids is examined by analyzing the frequency responses from spatio-temporal body forces to the velocity and polymer stress fluctuations. In strongly elastic flows, we show that disturbances with large streamwise length scales may be significantly amplified even in the absence of inertia. For fluctuations without streamwise variations, we derive explicit analytical expressions for the dependence of the worst-case amplification (from different forcing to different velocity and polymer stress co…
The dynamics of rigid particle suspensions in a wall-bounded laminar flow present several non-trivial and intriguing features, including particle ordering, lateral transport, and the appearance of stable, preferential locations like the Segré-Silberberg annulus. The formation of more than one annulus is a particularly puzzling phenomenon that is still not fully explained. Here, we present numerical simulation results of a dilute suspension of particles in (periodic) pipe flow based on the lattice Boltzmann and the discrete element methods (DEM). Our simulations provide access to the full radia…
This movie illustrates the recent numerical and experimental discovery of a new state of turbulence in dilute polymer solutions, Elasto-Inertial Turbulence. Elasto-inertial turbulence is characterized by a chaotic flow state in which both inertial and elastic effects, whose relative contributions vary with the Reynolds number, control the flow dynamics.
