We show that for $k \geq 2$, there exists a function $f(k) = O(k)$ such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ of order $n \geq f(k)$ with minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle $H$ such that $G-E(H)$ is $k$-connected. Applying Nash-Williams' result on edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles, we also show that for $k \geq 2$ and $\ell \geq 2$, there exists a function $g(k,\ell) = O(k\ell)$ such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ of order $n \geq g(k,\ell)$ with minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}$ contains $\ell$ edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles $H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_\ell$ such that $G-\cup_{1 \leq i \leq \ell}E(H_i)$ is $k$-connected. As a corollary, we have a statement that refines the result of Nash-Williams for $k$-connected graphs with $k \leq 8$. Moreover, when the connectivity of $G$ is exactly $k$, a similar result with an improved lower bound on $n$ can be shown, which does not depend on the result of Nash-Williams.
We relate matroid connectivity to Tutte-connectivity in an infinite graph. Moreover, we show that the two cycle matroids, the finite-cycle matroid and the cycle matroid, in which also infinite cycles are taken into account, have the same connectivity function. As an application we re-prove that, also for infinite graphs, Tutte-connectivity is invariant under taking dual graphs.
The conditional $h$-vertex($h$-edge) connectivity of a connected graph $H$ of minimum degree $ k > h$ is the size of a smallest vertex(edge) set $F$ of $H$ such that $H - F$ is a disconnected graph of minimum degree at least $h.$ Let $G$ be the Cartesian product of $r\geq 1$ cycles, each of length at least four and let $h$ be an integer such that $0\leq h\leq 2r-2$. In this paper, we determine the conditional $h$-vertex-connectivity and the conditional $h$-edge-connectivity of the graph $G.$ We prove that both these connectivities are equal to $(2r-h)a_h^r$, where $a_h^r$ is the number of vert…
Dirac showed that in a $(k-1)$-connected graph there is a path through each $k$ vertices. The path $k$-connectivity $π_k(G)$ of a graph $G$, which is a generalization of Dirac's notion, was introduced by Hager in 1986. In this paper, we study path connectivity of line graphs.
A conjecture by Lichiardopol states that for every $k \ge 1$ there exists an integer $g(k)$ such that every digraph of minimum out-degree at least $g(k)$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles of pairwise distinct lengths. Motivated by Lichiardopol's conjecture, we study the existence of vertex-disjoint directed cycles satisfying length constraints in digraphs of large connectivity or large minimum degree. Our main result is that for every $k \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists $s(k) \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every strongly $s(k)$-connected digraph contains $k$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles …
Let $G$ be a connected graph and $g$ be a non-negative integer. The $g$-extra connectivity of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a set of vertices in $G$, if it exists, whose removal disconnects $G$ and leaves every component with more than $g$ vertices. The strong product $G_1 \boxtimes G_2$ of graphs $G_1=(V_{1}, E_{1})$ and $G_2=(V_{2}, E_{2})$ is the graph with vertex set $V(G_1 \boxtimes G_2)=V_{1} \times V_{2}$, where two distinct vertices $(x_{1}, x_{2}), (y_{1}, y_{2}) \in V_{1} \times V_{2}$ are adjacent in $G_1 \boxtimes G_2$ if and only if $x_{i}=y_{i}$ or $x_{i} y_{i} \in E_{i}$ for…
We consider a robust variant of Dirac-type problems in $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For instance, we prove that if $H$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least $(1/2 + γ)n$, $γ>0$, and $n$ is sufficiently large, then any edge coloring $ϕ$ satisfying appropriate local constraints yields a properly colored tight Hamilton cycle in $H$. Similar results for loose cycles are also shown.
The famous Dirac's Theorem gives an exact bound on the minimum degree of an $n$-vertex graph guaranteeing the existence of a hamiltonian cycle. We prove exact bounds of similar type for hamiltonian Berge cycles in $r$-uniform, $n$-vertex hypergraphs for all $3\leq r< n$. The bounds are different for $r<n/2$ and $r\geq n/2$. We also give bounds on the minimum degree guaranteeing existence of Berge cycles of length at least $k$ in such hypergraphs; the bounds are exact for all $k\geq n/2$.
Hamidoune's connectivity results for hierarchical Cayley digraphs are extended to Cayley coset digraphs and thus to arbitrary vertex transitive digraphs. It is shown that if a Cayley coset digraph can be hierarchically decomposed in a certain way, then it is optimally vertex connected. The results are obtained by extending the methods used by Hamidoune. They are used to show that cycle-prefix graphs are optimally vertex connected. This implies that cycle-prefix graphs have good fault tolerance properties.
Let $c$ be an edge-colouring of a graph $G$ such that for every vertex $v$ there are at least $d \ge 2$ different colours on edges incident to $v$. We prove that $G$ contains a properly coloured path of length 2d or a properly coloured cycle of length at least $d+1$. Moreover, if $G$ does not contain any properly coloured cycle, then there exists a properly coloured path of length $3 \times 2^{d-1}-2$.
The paper studies the connectivity properties of facet graphs of simplicial complexes of combinatorial interest. In particular, it is shown that the facet graphs of $d$-cycles, $d$-hypertrees and $d$-hypercuts are, respectively, $(d+1)$, $d$, and $(n-d-1)$-vertex-connected. It is also shown that the facet graph of a $d$-cycle cannot be split into more than $s$ connected components by removing at most $s$ vertices. In addition, the paper discusses various related issues, as well as an extension to cell-complexes.
For a graph $G$, let $\cn(G)$ and $\la(G)$ denote the chromatic number of $G$ and the maximum local edge connectivity of $G$, respectively. A result of Dirac \cite{Dirac53} implies that every graph $G$ satisfies $\cn(G)\leq \la(G)+1$. In this paper we characterize the graphs $G$ for which $\cn(G)=\la(G)+1$. The case $\la(G)=3$ was already solved by Alboulker {\em et al.\,} \cite{AlboukerV2016}. We show that a graph $G$ with $\la(G)=k\geq 4$ satisfies $\cn(G)=k+1$ if and only if $G$ contains a block which can be obtained from copies of $K_{k+1}$ by repeated applications of the Hajós join.

We establish a precise characterisation of $4$-uniform hypergraphs with minimum codegree close to $n/2$ which contain a Hamilton $2$-cycle. As an immediate corollary we identify the exact Dirac threshold for Hamilton $2$-cycles in $4$-uniform hypergraphs. Moreover, by derandomising the proof of our characterisation we provide a polynomial-time algorithm which, given a $4$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree close to $n/2$, either finds a Hamilton $2$-cycle in $H$ or provides a certificate that no such cycle exists. This surprising result stands in contrast to the graph setting, in whi…
The research in the present paper was motivated by the conjecture of Ryjáček that every locally connected graph is weakly pancyclic. For a connected locally connected graph $G$ of order at least $3$, our results are as follows: If $G$ is $(K_1+(K_1\cup K_2))$-free, then $G$ is weakly pancyclic. If $G$ is $(K_1+(K_1\cup K_2))$-free, then $G$ is fully cycle extendable if and only if $2δ(G)\geq n(G)$. If $G$ is $\{ K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3,K_1+P_4\}$-free or $\{ K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3,K_1+(K_1\cup P_3)\}$-free, then $G$ is fully cycle extendable. If $G$ is distinct from $K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3$ and $\{ K_1+P_4,K_…
A famous theorem of Dirac states that any graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n/2$ has a Hamilton cycle. Such graphs are called Dirac graphs. Strengthening this result, we show the existence of rainbow Hamilton cycles in $μn$-bounded colourings of Dirac graphs for sufficiently small $μ>0$.
We show that for each α>0 every sufficiently large oriented graph G with δ^+(G),δ^-(G)\ge 3|G|/8+ α|G| contains a Hamilton cycle. This gives an approximate solution to a problem of Thomassen. In fact, we prove the stronger result that G is still Hamiltonian if δ(G)+δ^+(G)+δ^-(G)\geq 3|G|/2 + α|G|. Up to the term α|G| this confirms a conjecture of Häggkvist. We also prove an Ore-type theorem for oriented graphs.
Let $k \ge 3$ be an integer, $H_{k}(G)$ be the set of vertices of degree at least $2k$ in a graph $G$, and $L_{k}(G)$ be the set of vertices of degree at most $2k-2$ in $G$. In 1963, Dirac and Erdős proved that $G$ contains $k$ (vertex-)disjoint cycles whenever $|H_{k}(G)| - |L_{k}(G)| \ge k^{2} + 2k - 4$. The main result of this paper is that for $k \ge 2$, every graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \ge 3k$ containing at most $t$ disjoint triangles and with $|H_{k}(G)| - |L_{k}(G)| \ge 2k + t$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles. This yields that if $k \ge 2$ and $|H_{k}(G)| - |L_{k}(G)| \ge 3k$, then $G$ contain…
A tight Hamilton cycle in a $k$-uniform hypergraph ($k$-graph) $G$ is a cyclic ordering of the vertices of $G$ such that every set of $k$ consecutive vertices in the ordering forms an edge. Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi proved that for $k\geq 3$, every $k$-graph on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $n/2+o(n)$ contains a tight Hamilton cycle. We show that the number of tight Hamilton cycles in such $k$-graphs is $\exp(n\ln n-Θ(n))$. As a corollary, we obtain a similar estimate on the number of Hamilton $\ell$-cycles in such $k$-graphs for all $\ell\in\{0,\dots,k-1\}$, which makes prog…
For $0\leq \ell <k$, a Hamiltonian $\ell$-cycle in a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is a cyclic ordering of the vertices of $H$ in which the edges are segments of length $k$ and every two consecutive edges overlap in exactly $\ell$ vertices. We show that for all $0\le \ell<k-1$, every $k$-graph with minimum co-degree $δn$ with $δ>1/2$ has (asymptotically and up to a subexponential factor) at least as many Hamiltonian $\ell$-cycles as in a typical random $k$-graph with edge-probability $δ$. This significantly improves a recent result of Glock, Gould, Joos, Kühn, and Osthus, and verifies a conjectur…
Let $G$ be a graph, $C$ a longest cycle in $G$ and $\overline{p}$, $\overline{c}$ the lengths of a longest path and a longest cycle in $G\backslash C$, respectively. Almost all lower bounds for the circumference base on a standard procedure: choose an initial cycle $C_0$ in $G$ and try to enlarge it via structures of $G\backslash C_0$ and connections between $C_0$ and $G\backslash C_0$ closely related to $\overline{p}$, $\overline{c}$ and connectivity $κ$. Actually, each lower bound obtained in result of this procedure, somehow or is related to $κ$, $\overline{p}$, $\overline{c}$ but in forms …
Every 4-connected graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ$ and connectivity $κ$ either contains a cycle of length at least $4δ-κ-4$ or every longest cycle in $G$ is a dominating cycle.
A Hamilton Berge cycle of a hypergraph on $n$ vertices is an alternating sequence $(v_1, e_1, v_2, \ldots, v_n, e_n)$ of distinct vertices $v_1, \ldots, v_n$ and distinct hyperedges $e_1, \ldots, e_n$ such that $\{v_1,v_n\}\subseteq e_n$ and $\{v_i, v_{i+1}\} \subseteq e_i$ for every $i\in [n-1]$. We prove the following Dirac-type theorem about Berge cycles in the binomial random $r$-uniform hypergraph $H^{(r)}(n,p)$: for every integer $r \geq 3$, every real $γ>0$ and $p \geq \frac{\ln^{17r} n}{n^{r-1}}$ asymptotically almost surely, every spanning subgraph $H \subseteq H^{(r)}(n,p)$ with mini…
We study sufficient conditions for Hamiltonian cycles in hypergraphs, and obtain both Turán- and Dirac-type results. While the Turán-type result gives an exact threshold for the appearance of a Hamiltonian cycle in a hypergraph depending only on the extremal number of a certain path, the Dirac-type result yields a sufficient condition relying solely on the minimum vertex degree.
We prove that the cycle space of every planar finitely separable 3-connected graph $G$ is generated by some ${\rm Aut}(G)$-invariant nested set of cycles. We also discuss the situation in the case of smaller connectivity.
A graph is Hamiltonian if it contains a cycle passing through every vertex exactly once. A celebrated theorem of Dirac from 1952 asserts that every graph on $n\ge 3$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n/2$ is Hamiltonian. We refer to such graphs as Dirac graphs. In this paper we obtain the following strengthening of this result. Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, an {\em incompatibility system} $\mathcal{F}$ over $G$ is a family $\mathcal{F}=\{F_v\}_{v\in V}$ such that for every $v\in V$, the set $F_v$ is a set of unordered pairs $F_v \subseteq \{\{e,e'\}: e\ne e'\in E, e\cap e'=\{v\}\}$. An incompa…
A graph is said to be cyclic $k$-edge-connected, if at least $k$ edges must be removed to disconnect it into two components, each containing a cycle. Such a set of $k$ edges is called a cyclic-$k$-edge cutset and it is called a trivial cyclic-$k$-edge cutset if at least one of the resulting two components induces a single $k$-cycle. It is known that fullerenes, that is, 3-connected cubic planar graphs all of whose faces are pentagons and hexagons, are cyclic 5-edge-connected. In this article it is shown that a fullerene $F$ containing a nontrivial cyclic-5-edge cutset admits two antipodal pent…
Let $k \geq 3$ be an integer, $h_{k}(G)$ be the number of vertices of degree at least $2k$ in a graph $G$, and $\ell_{k}(G)$ be the number of vertices of degree at most $2k-2$ in $G$. Dirac and Erdős proved in 1963 that if $h_{k}(G) - \ell_{k}(G) \geq k^{2} + 2k - 4$, then $G$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles. For each $k\geq 2$, they also showed an infinite sequence of graphs $G_k(n)$ with $h_{k}(G_k(n)) - \ell_{k}(G_k(n)) = 2k-1$ such that $G_k(n)$ does not have $k$ disjoint cycles. Recently, the authors proved that, for $k \geq 2$, a bound of $3k$ is sufficient to guarantee the existence…
In 1952, Dirac proved that every $2$-connected $n$-vertex graph with the minimum degree $k+1$ contains a cycle of length at least $\min\{n, 2(k+1)\}$. Here we obtain a stability version of this result by characterizing those graphs with minimum degree $k$ and circumference at most $2k+1$. We present applications of the above-stated result by obtaining generalized Turán numbers. In particular, for all $\ell \geq 5$ we determine how many copies of a five-cycle as well as four-cycle are necessary to guarantee that the graph has circumference larger than $\ell$. In addition, we give a new proof of…
In 1963, Corrádi and Hajnal proved that for all $k\geq1$ and $n\geq3k$, every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq2k$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles. The bound $δ(G) \geq 2k$ is sharp. Here we characterize those graphs with $δ(G)\geq2k-1$ that contain $k$ disjoint cycles. This answers the simple-graph case of Dirac's 1963 question on the characterization of $(2k-1)$-connected graphs with no $k$ disjoint cycles. Enomoto and Wang refined the Corrádi-Hajnal Theorem, proving the following Ore-type version: For all $k\geq1$ and $n\geq3k$, every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains $k…
Let $G$ be a cyclically $5$-connected cubic graph with a $5$-edge-cut separating $G$ into two cyclic components $G_1$ and $G_2$. We prove that each component $G_i$ can be completed to a cyclically $5$-connected cubic graph by adding three vertices, unless $G_i$ is a cycle of length five. Our work extends similar results by Andersen et al. for cyclic connectivity $4$ from 1988.
If a biconnected graph stays connected after the removal of an arbitrary vertex and an arbitrary edge, then it is called 2.5-connected. We prove that every biconnected graph has a canonical decomposition into 2.5-connected components. These components are arranged in a tree-structure. We also discuss the connection between 2.5-connected components and triconnected components and use this to present a linear-time algorithm which computes the 2.5-connected components of a graph. We show that every critical 2.5-connected graph other than K4 can be obtained from critical 2.5-connected graphs of sm…
In 1963, Corrádi and Hajnal proved that for all $k \ge 1$ and $n \ge 3k$, every (simple) graph on n vertices with minimum degree at least 2k contains k disjoint cycles. The same year, Dirac described the 3-connected multigraphs not containing two disjoint cycles and asked the more general question: Which (2k-1)-connected multigraphs do not contain k disjoint cycles? Recently, the authors characterized the simple graphs G with minimum degree $δ(G) \ge 2k-1$ that do not contain k disjoint cycles. We use this result to answer Dirac's question in full.
Dirac proved that any graph with minimum vertex degree $δ$ contains either a cycle of length at least $2δ$ or a Hamilton cycle. Motivated by this result, we characterize those graphs having no cycle longer than $2δ$.
A digraph is {\bf eulerian} if it is connected and every vertex has its in-degree equal to its out-degree. Having a spanning eulerian subdigraph is thus a weakening of having a hamiltonian cycle. A digraph is {\bf semicomplete} if it has no pair of non-adjacent vertices. A {\bf tournament} is a semicomplete digraph without directed cycles of length 2. Fraise and Thomassen \cite{fraisseGC3} proved that every $(k+1)$-strong tournament has a hamiltonian cycle which avoids any prescribed set of $k$ arcs. In \cite{bangsupereuler} the authors demonstrated that a number of results concerning vertex-c…
A connected graph $G$ is said to be $k$-connected if it has more than $k$ vertices and remains connected whenever fewer than $k$ vertices are deleted. In this paper, for a connected graph $G$ with sufficiently large order, we present a tight sufficient condition for $G$ with fixed minimum degree to be $k$-connected based on the $Q$-index. Our result can be viewed as a spectral counterpart of the corresponding Dirac type condition.
Let P be a graph property. A graph is locally P if the subgraph induced by the open neighbourhood of every vertex has property P. A graph has the Dirac condition if the minimum degree of every vertex is at least half the order of the graph and it satisfies the Ore condition if the sum of the degrees of any pair of non-adjacent vertices is at least the order of the graph. In this paper we study global properties of graphs that possess the local Dirac and Ore conditions. We focus on the connectivity, edge-connectivity, diameter, planarity and cycle structure of these graphs.
The cyclic edge-connectivity of a graph $G$ is the least $k$ such that there exists a set of $k$ edges whose removal disconnects $G$ into components where every component contains a cycle. We show that for graphs of minimum degree at least 3 and girth $g$ at least 4, the cyclic edge-connectivity is bounded above by $(Δ-2)g$ where $Δ$ is the maximum degree. We then prove that if the second eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a $d$-regular graph of girth $g\geq4$ is sufficiently small, then the cyclic edge-connectivity is $(d-2)g$, providing a spectral condition for when this upper bound on cy…
A particular case of Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture, says that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum out-degree at least $1/3n$ contains a directed cycle of length at most 3. Recently, Kral, Hladky and Norine proved that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum out-degree at least $0.3465n$ contains a directed cycle of length at most 3 (which currently is the best result). A weaker particular case says that a digraph of order $n$ with minimum semi-degree at least $1/3n$ contains a directed triangle. In a recent paper, by using the result of Kral et al, the author proved that for $β\geq 0.343545$, any …
We perform a systematic study in the computational complexity of the connected variant of three related transversal problems: Vertex Cover, Feedback Vertex Set, and Odd Cycle Transversal. Just like their original counterparts, these variants are NP-complete for general graphs. A graph $G$ is $H$-free for some graph $H$ if $G$ contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. It is known that Connected Vertex Cover is NP-complete even for $H$-free graphs if $H$ contains a claw or a cycle. We show that the two other connected variants also remain NP-complete if $H$ contains a cycle or claw. In the…
n the $k$-diameter component connectivity model a network is consider operational if there is a component with diameter at least $k$. Therefore, a network is in a failure state if every component has diameter less than $k$. In this paper we find the vertex variant of the $k$-diameter component connectivity parameter, which is the minimum number of vertex deletions in order to put a network into a failure state, for particular classes of graphs. We also show the mixed variant by allowing vertex and edge failures within the network. We show results for paths, cycles, complete, and complete bipar…
Supergrid graphs contain grid graphs and triangular grid graphs as their subgraphs. The Hamiltonian cycle and path problems for general supergrid graphs were known to be NP-complete. A graph is called Hamiltonian if it contains a Hamiltonian cycle, and is said to be Hamiltonian connected if there exists a Hamiltonian path between any two distinct vertices in it. In this paper, we first prove that every L-shaped supergrid graph always contains a Hamiltonian cycle except one trivial condition. We then verify the Hamiltonian connectivity of L-shaped supergrid graphs except few conditions. The Ham…
The topology of an interconnection network can be modeled by a graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$. The connectivity of graph $G$ is a parameter to measure the reliability of corresponding network. Direct product is one important graph product. This paper mainly focuses on the super connectedness of direct product of graphs and cycles. The connectivity of $G$, denoted by $κ(G)$, is the size of a minimum vertex set $S\subseteq V(G)$ such that $G-S$ is not connected or has only one vertex. The graph $G$ is said to be super connected, simply super-$κ$, if every minimum vertex cut is the neighborhood of a verte…
