Within the Landau-Ginzburg picture of phase transitions, scalar field theories develop phase separation because of a spontaneous symmetry-breaking mechanism. This picture works in thermodynamics but also in the dynamics of phase separation. Here we show that scalar non-equilibrium field theories undergo phase separation just because of non-equilibrium fluctuations driven by a persistent noise. The mechanism is similar to what happens in Motility-Induced Phase Separation where persistent motion introduces an effective attractive force. We observe that Noise-Induced Phase Separation occurs in a region of the phase diagram where disordered field configurations would otherwise be stable at equilibrium. Measuring the local entropy production rate to quantify the time-reversal symmetry breaking, we find that such breaking is concentrated on the boundary between the two phases.
It is known that purely repulsive self-propelled colloids can undergo bulk liquid-vapor phase separation. In experiments and large scale simulations, however, more complex steady states are also seen, comprising a dynamic population of dense clusters in a sea of vapor, or dilute bubbles in a liquid. Here we show that these microphase-separated states should emerge generically in active matter, without any need to invoke system-specific details. We give a coarse-grained description of them, and predict transitions between regimes of bulk phase separation and microphase separation. We achieve th…
Materials undergoing both phase separation and chemical reactions (defined here as all processes that change particle type or number) form an important class of non-equilibrium systems. Examples range from suspensions of self-propelled bacteria with birth-death dynamics, to bio-molecular condensates, or 'membraneless organelles', within cells. In contrast to their passive counterparts, such systems have conserved and non-conserved dynamics that do not, in general, derive from a shared free energy. This mismatch breaks time-reversal symmetry and leads to new types of dynamical competition that …
We consider a dynamical field theory (Active Model B+) that minimally extends the equilibrium Model B for diffusive phase separation of a scalar field, by adding leading-order terms that break time-reversal symmetry. It was recently shown that such active terms can cause the bulk phase separation of Model B to be replaced by a steady state of microphase separation at a finite length scale. This phenomenon was understood at mean-field level as due to the activity-induced reversal of the Ostwald ripening mechanism, which provides the kinetic pathway to bulk phase separation in passive fluids. Th…
Off-lattice active Brownian particles form clusters and undergo phase separation even in the absence of attractions or velocity-alignment mechanisms. Arguments that explain this phenomenon appeal only to the ability of particles to move persistently in a direction that fluctuates, but existing lattice models of hard particles that account for this behavior do not exhibit phase separation. Here we present a lattice model of active matter that exhibits motility-induced phase separation in the absence of velocity alignment. Using direct and rare-event sampling of dynamical trajectories we show th…
This paper concerns with the time-reversal characteristics of intrinsic normal diffusion in quantum systems. Time-reversible properties are quantified by the time-reversal test; the system evolved in the forward direction for a certain period is time-reversed for the same period after applying a small perturbation at the reversal time, and the separation between the time-reversed perturbed and unperturbed states is measured as a function of perturbation strength, which characterizes sensitivity of the time reversed system to the perturbation and is called the time-reversal characteristic. Time…
We construct exact steady states of unitary non-equilibrium time evolution in the gapless XXZ spin-1/2 chain where integrability preserves ballistic spin transport at long-times. We characterize the quasi-local conserved quantities responsible for this feature and introduce a computationally effective way to evaluate their expectation values on generic matrix product initial states. We employ this approach to reproduce the long-time limit of local observables in all quantum quenches which explicitly break particle-hole or time-reversal symmetry. We focus on a class of initial states supporting…
Active matter systems are driven out of thermal equilibrium by a lack of generalized Stokes-Einstein relation between injection and dissipation of energy at the microscopic scale. We consider such a system of interacting particles, propelled by persistent noises, and show that, at small but finite persistence time, their dynamics still satisfy a time-reversal symmetry. To do so, we compute perturbatively their steady-state measure and show that, for short persistent times, the entropy production rate vanishes. This endows such systems with an effective Fluctuation-Dissipation theorem akin to t…
Definitions of entropy usually assume time-reversal (T) invariance of interactions, yet microscopically T is known to be violated. We present a detailed computational example of (uncharged) particle species separation (Maxwell demon) using an interaction that violates both parity (P) and T so that PT is preserved, consistent with the CPT invariance required in quantum field theory (C is charge conjugation). This illustrates how T-violating forces can produce more organized states from disorganized ones, contrary to expectations based on increase of entropy. We also outline several scenarios in…
We explore phase separation and kinetic arrest in a model active colloidal system consisting of self-propelled, hard-core particles with nonconvex shapes. The passive limit of the model, namely cross-shaped particles on a square lattice, exhibits a first-order transition from a fluid phase to a solid phase with increasing density. Quenches into the two-phase coexistence region exhibit an aging regime. The nonconvex shape of the particles eases jamming in the passive system and leads to strong inhibition of rotations of the active particles. Using numerical simulations and analytical modeling, …
By means of molecular dynamics, we study the structure and the dynamics of a microscopic model for colloidal gels at low volume fractions. The presence of directional interactions leads to the formation of a persistent interconnected network at temperatures where phase separation does not occur. We find that large scale spatial correlations strongly depend on the volume fraction and characterize the formation of the persistent network. We observe a pre-peak in the static structure factor and relate it to the network structure. The slow dynamics at gelation is characterized by the coexistence o…

We study the Persistence properties of the T=0 coarsening dynamics of one dimensional $q$-state Potts model using a modified mean-field approximation (MMFA). In this approximation, the spatial correlations between the interfaces separating spins with different Potts states is ignored, but the correct time dependence of the mean density $P(t)$ of persistent spins is imposed. For this model, it is known that $P(t)$ follows a power-law decay with time, $P(t)\sim t^{-θ(q)}$ where $θ(q)$ is the $q$-dependent persistence exponent. We study the spatial structure of the persistent region within the MM…

Active colloids exhibit persistent motion, which can lead to motility-induced phase separation (MIPS). However, there currently exists no microscopic theory to account for this phenomenon. We report a first-principles theory, free of fit parameters, for active spherical colloids, which shows explicitly how an effective many-body interaction potential is generated by activity and how this can rationalize MIPS. For a passively repulsive system the theory predicts phase separation and pair correlations in quantitative agreement with simulation. For an attractive system the theory shows that phase…
Numerical solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert micromagnetic model incorporating thermal fluctuations and dipole-dipole interactions (calculated by the Fast Multipole Method) are presented for systems composed of nanoscale iron pillars of dimension 9 nm x 9 nm x 150 nm. Hysteresis loops generated under sinusoidally varying fields are obtained, while the coercive field is estimated to be 1979 $\pm$ 14 Oe using linear field sweeps at T=0 K. Thermal effects are essential to the relaxation of magnetization trapped in a metastable orientation, such as happens after a rapid reversal of an extern…
We investigate the steady-state entropy production rate (EPR) in the Hydrodynamic Vicsek Model (HVM) and Diffusive Flocking Model (DFM). Both models display a transition from an isotropic gas to a polar liquid (flocking) phase, in addition to traveling polar clusters and microphase-separation in the miscibility gap. The phase diagram of the DFM, which may be considered an extension of the HVM, contains additional structure at low densities where we find a novel crystal phase in which a stationary hexagonal lattice of high-density ridges surround low density valleys. From an assessment of the s…
We study the early stages of viral infection, and the distribution of times to obtain a persistent infection. The virus population proliferates by entering and reproducing inside a target cell until a sufficient number of new virus particles are released via a burst, with a given burst size distribution, which results in the death of the infected cell. Starting with a 2D model describing the joint dynamics of the virus and infected cell populations, we analyze the corresponding master equation using the probability generating function formalism. Exploiting time-scale separation between the vir…
