With the frequent use of self-supervised monocular depth estimation in robotics and autonomous driving, the model's efficiency is becoming increasingly important. Most current approaches apply much larger and more complex networks to improve the precision of depth estimation. Some researchers incorporated Transformer into self-supervised monocular depth estimation to achieve better performance. However, this method leads to high parameters and high computation. We present a fully convolutional depth estimation network using contextual feature fusion. Compared to UNet++ and HRNet, we use high-resolution and low-resolution features to reserve information on small targets and fast-moving objects instead of long-range fusion. We further promote depth estimation results employing lightweight channel attention based on convolution in the decoder stage. Our method reduces the parameters without sacrificing accuracy. Experiments on the KITTI benchmark show that our method can get better results than many large models, such as Monodepth2, with only 30 parameters. Self-supervised monocular depth estimation has received much attention recently in computer vision. Most of the existing works in literature aggregate multi-scale features for depth prediction via either straightforward concatenation or element-wise addition, however, such feature aggregation operations generally neglect the contextual consistency between multi-scale features. Addressing this problem, we propose the Self-Distilled Feature Aggregation (SDFA) module for simultaneously aggregating a pair of low-scale and high-scale features and maintaining their contextual consistency. The SDFA e…
Depth estimation is a traditional computer vision task, which plays a crucial role in understanding 3D scene geometry. Recently, deep-convolutional-neural-networks based methods have achieved promising results in the monocular depth estimation field. Specifically, the framework that combines the multi-scale features extracted by the dilated convolution based block (atrous spatial pyramid pooling, ASPP) has gained the significant improvement in the dense labeling task. However, the discretized and predefined dilation rates cannot capture the continuous context information that differs in divers…

The exploration of mutual-benefit cross-domains has shown great potential toward accurate self-supervised depth estimation. In this work, we revisit feature fusion between depth and semantic information and propose an efficient local adaptive attention method for geometric aware representation enhancement. Instead of building global connections or deforming attention across the feature space without restraint, we bound the spatial interaction within a learnable region of interest. In particular, we leverage geometric cues from semantic information to learn local adaptive bounding boxes to guid…

A well-known challenge in applying deep-learning methods to omnidirectional images is spherical distortion. In dense regression tasks such as depth estimation, where structural details are required, using a vanilla CNN layer on the distorted 360 image results in undesired information loss. In this paper, we propose a 360 monocular depth estimation pipeline, OmniFusion, to tackle the spherical distortion issue. Our pipeline transforms a 360 image into less-distorted perspective patches (i.e. tangent images) to obtain patch-wise predictions via CNN, and then merge the patch-wise results for fina…
In this paper, we tackle the problem of estimating the depth of a scene from a monocular video sequence. In particular, we handle challenging scenarios, such as non-translational camera motion and dynamic scenes, where traditional structure from motion and motion stereo methods do not apply. To this end, we first study the problem of depth estimation from a single image. In this context, we exploit the availability of a pool of images for which the depth is known, and formulate monocular depth estimation as a discrete-continuous optimization problem, where the continuous variables encode the d…

Monocular depth estimation is an important task that can be applied to many robotic applications. Existing methods focus on improving depth estimation accuracy via training increasingly deeper and wider networks, however these suffer from large computational complexity. Recent studies found that edge information are important cues for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to estimate depth. Inspired by the above observations, we present a novel lightweight Edge Guided Depth Estimation Network (EGD-Net) in this study. In particular, we start out with a lightweight encoder-decoder architecture an…

Previous methods on estimating detailed human depth often require supervised training with `ground truth' depth data. This paper presents a self-supervised method that can be trained on YouTube videos without known depth, which makes training data collection simple and improves the generalization of the learned network. The self-supervised learning is achieved by minimizing a photo-consistency loss, which is evaluated between a video frame and its neighboring frames warped according to the estimated depth and the 3D non-rigid motion of the human body. To solve this non-rigid motion, we first e…

With the advent of deep learning, estimating depth from a single RGB image has recently received a lot of attention, being capable of empowering many different applications ranging from path planning for robotics to computational cinematography. Nevertheless, while the depth maps are in their entirety fairly reliable, the estimates around object discontinuities are still far from satisfactory. This can be contributed to the fact that the convolutional operator naturally aggregates features across object discontinuities, resulting in smooth transitions rather than clear boundaries. Therefore, i…

In this study, a deep-learning-based multi-stage network architecture called Multi-Stage Depth Prediction Network (MSDPN) is proposed to predict a dense depth map using a 2D LiDAR and a monocular camera. Our proposed network consists of a multi-stage encoder-decoder architecture and Cross Stage Feature Aggregation (CSFA). The proposed multi-stage encoder-decoder architecture alleviates the partial observation problem caused by the characteristics of a 2D LiDAR, and CSFA prevents the multi-stage network from diluting the features and allows the network to learn the inter-spatial relationship be…

To increase the robustness, we propose a novel tracking front-end that performs dense direct image alignment using depth maps rendered from a global model that is built incrementally from dense depth predictions. To predict the dense depth maps, we propose Cascade View-Aggregation MVSNet (CVA-MVSNet) that utilizes the entire active keyframe window by hierarchically constructing 3D cost volumes wit…

We present a novel paradigm of building an animatable 3D human representation from a monocular video input, such that it can be rendered in any unseen poses and views. Our method is based on a dynamic Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) rigged by a mesh-based parametric 3D human model serving as a geometry proxy. Previous methods usually rely on multi-view videos or accurate 3D geometry information as additional inputs; besides, most methods suffer from degraded quality when generalized to unseen poses. We identify that the key to generalization is a good input embedding for querying dynamic NeRF: A …

We present a novel approach for unsupervised learning of depth and ego-motion from monocular video. Unsupervised learning removes the need for separate supervisory signals (depth or ego-motion ground truth, or multi-view video). Prior work in unsupervised depth learning uses pixel-wise or gradient-based losses, which only consider pixels in small local neighborhoods. Our main contribution is to explicitly consider the inferred 3D geometry of the scene, enforcing consistency of the estimated 3D point clouds and ego-motion across consecutive frames. This is a challenging task and is solved by a …
We present a novel method for simultaneous learning of depth, egomotion, object motion, and camera intrinsics from monocular videos, using only consistency across neighboring video frames as supervision signal. Similarly to prior work, our method learns by applying differentiable warping to frames and comparing the result to adjacent ones, but it provides several improvements: We address occlusions geometrically and differentiably, directly using the depth maps as predicted during training. We introduce randomized layer normalization, a novel powerful regularizer, and we account for object mot…
Estimating the accurate depth from a single image is challenging since it is inherently ambiguous and ill-posed. While recent works design increasingly complicated and powerful networks to directly regress the depth map, we take the path of CRFs optimization. Due to the expensive computation, CRFs are usually performed between neighborhoods rather than the whole graph. To leverage the potential of fully-connected CRFs, we split the input into windows and perform the FC-CRFs optimization within each window, which reduces the computation complexity and makes FC-CRFs feasible. To better capture t…
Traditional grid/neighbor-based static pooling has become a constraint for point cloud geometry analysis. In this paper, we propose DAR-Net, a novel network architecture that focuses on dynamic feature aggregation. The central idea of DAR-Net is generating a self-adaptive pooling skeleton that considers both scene complexity and local geometry features. Providing variable semi-local receptive fields and weights, the skeleton serves as a bridge that connect local convolutional feature extractors and a global recurrent feature integrator. Experimental results on indoor scene datasets show advant…
Recent advances in deep learning for edge detection and segmentation opens up a new path for semantic-edge-based ego-motion estimation. In this work, we propose a robust monocular visual odometry (VO) framework using category-aware semantic edges. It can reconstruct large-scale semantic maps in challenging outdoor environments. The core of our approach is a semantic nearest neighbor field that facilitates a robust data association of edges across frames using semantics. This significantly enlarges the convergence radius during tracking phases. The proposed edge registration method can be easil…

As cameras are increasingly deployed in new application domains such as autonomous driving, performing 3D object detection on monocular images becomes an important task for visual scene understanding. Recent advances on monocular 3D object detection mainly rely on the ``pseudo-LiDAR'' generation, which performs monocular depth estimation and lifts the 2D pixels to pseudo 3D points. However, depth estimation from monocular images, due to its poor accuracy, leads to inevitable position shift of pseudo-LiDAR points within the object. Therefore, the predicted bounding boxes may suffer from inaccur…

Despite monocular 3D object detection having recently made a significant leap forward thanks to the use of pre-trained depth estimators for pseudo-LiDAR recovery, such two-stage methods typically suffer from overfitting and are incapable of explicitly encapsulating the geometric relation between depth and object bounding box. To overcome this limitation, we instead propose OPA-3D, a single-stage, end-to-end, Occlusion-Aware Pixel-Wise Aggregation network that to jointly estimate dense scene depth with depth-bounding box residuals and object bounding boxes, allowing a two-stream detection of 3D…
Monocular scene reconstruction from posed images is challenging due to the complexity of a large environment. Recent volumetric methods learn to directly predict the TSDF volume and have demonstrated promising results in this task. However, most methods focus on how to extract and fuse the 2D features to a 3D feature volume, but none of them improve the way how the 3D volume is aggregated. In this work, we propose an SDF transformer network, which replaces the role of 3D CNN for better 3D feature aggregation. To reduce the explosive computation complexity of the 3D multi-head attention, we pro…
Query Expansion (QE) is a well established method for improving retrieval metrics in image search applications. When using QE, the search is conducted on a new query vector, constructed using an aggregation function over the query and images from the database. Recent works gave rise to QE techniques in which the aggregation function is learned, whereas previous techniques were based on hand-crafted aggregation functions, e.g., taking the mean of the query's nearest neighbors. However, most QE methods have focused on aggregation functions that work directly over the query and its immediate near…
Graph neural networks (GNNs) have achieved great success in many graph learning tasks. The main aspect powering existing GNNs is the multi-layer network architecture to learn the nonlinear graph representations for the specific learning tasks. The core operation in GNNs is message propagation in which each node updates its representation by aggregating its neighbors' representations. Existing GNNs mainly adopt either linear neighborhood aggregation (mean, sum) or max aggregator in their message propagation. (1) For linear aggregators, the whole nonlinearity and network's capacity of GNNs are ge…

In this work, we focus on designing a point local aggregation function that yields parameter efficient networks for 3D point cloud semantic segmentation. We explore the idea of using learnable neighbor-to-grid soft assignment in grid-based aggregation functions. Previous methods in literature operate on a predefined geometric grid such as local volume partitions or irregular kernel points. A more general alternative is to allow the network to learn an assignment function that best suits the end task. Since it is learnable, this mapping is allowed to be different per layer instead of being appl…
