This letter proposes a simple and inexpensive technique to improve the frequency control of distributed energy resources. The proposed control consists in modifying the conventional estimated bus frequency signal with an additional feedback signal that utilizes the rate of change of the voltage magnitude measured at the same bus. The case study showcases the benefits of the proposed control and compares its performance with standard frequency control schemes through time-domain simulations.
The renewable energy is connected to the power grid through power electronic converters, which are lack of make the inertia of synchronous generator/machine (SM) be lost. The increasing penetration of renewable energy in power system weakens the frequency and voltage stability. The Grid-Forming Converters (GFCs) simulate the function of synchronous motor through control method in order to improve the stability of power grid by providing inertia and stability regulation mechanism. This kind of converter control methods include virtual synchronous machine, schedulable virtual oscillator control …
Inverter based renewable generation (RG), especially at the distribution level, is supposed to trip offline during an islanding situation. However, islanding detection is done by comparing the voltage and frequency measurements at the point of common coupling (PCC), with limits defined in the form of ride-through curves. Current practice is to use the same limit throughout the year independent of the operating conditions. This could result in the tripping of RG at times when the system is already weak, thereby posing a threat to voltage security by heavily limiting the load margin (LM). Conver…
In this paper, we introduce Voltage Phasor Control (VPC), also known as Phasor Based Control, as a novel way of implementing Optimal Power Flow (OPF). Unlike conventional OPF, in which the power flow optimization broadcasts power injections, the VPC power flow optimization broadcasts voltage phasor setpoints to feedback controllers distributed throughout the network which respond to disturbances in real time. In this paper, we demonstrate that VPC can actively manage distributed energy resources to avoid voltage magnitude and line flow constraint violations in power distribution networks. We p…
In this paper, we present a data-driven secondary controller for regulating to some desired values several variables of interest in a power system, namely, electrical frequency, voltage magnitudes at critical buses, and active power flows through critical lines. The power generation system is based on distributed energy resources (DERs) interfaced with either grid-forming (GFM) or grid-following (GFL) inverters. The secondary controller is based on online feedback optimization leveraging the learned sensitivities of the changes in the system frequency, voltage magnitudes at critical buses, and…
We consider the problem of controlling the voltage of a distribution feeder using the reactive power capabilities of inverters. On a real distribution grid, we compare the local Volt/VAr droop control recommended in recent grid codes, a centralized dispatch based on optimal power flow (OPF) programming, and a feedback optimization (FO) controller that we propose. The local droop control yields suboptimal regulation, as predicted analytically. The OPF-based dispatch strategy requires an accurate grid model and measurement of all loads on the feeder in order to achieve proper voltage regulation.…
In vibration energy harvesting technologies, feedback control is required to maximize the average power generated from stochastic disturbances. In large-scale applications it is often advantageous to use three-phase conversion technologies for transduction. In such situations, vector control techniques can be used to optimally control the transducer currents in the direct-quadrature reference frame, as dynamic functions of feedback measurements. In this paradigm, converted energy is optimally controlled via the quadrature current. The direct current is only used to maintain control of the quad…
High penetrations of photovoltaic (PV) systems can cause severe voltage quality problems in distribution networks. This paper proposes a distributed control strategy based on the dynamic formation of coalitions to coordinate a large number of PV inverters for voltage regulation. In this strategy, a rule-based coalition formation scheme deals with the zonal voltage difference caused by the uneven integration of PV capacity. Under this scheme, PV inverters form into separate voltage regulation coalitions autonomously according to local, neighbor as well as coalition voltage magnitude and regulat…
