Navigation in Global Positioning Systems (GPS)-denied environments requires robust estimators reliant on fusion of inertial sensors able to estimate rigid-body's orientation, position, and linear velocity. Ultra-wideband (UWB) and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) represent low-cost measurement technology that can be utilized for successful Inertial Navigation. This paper presents a nonlinear deterministic navigation observer in a continuous form that directly employs UWB and IMU measurements. The estimator is developed on the extended Special Euclidean Group $\mathbb{SE}_{2}\left(3\right)$ and ensures exponential convergence of the closed loop error signals starting from almost any initial condition. The discrete version of the proposed observer is tested using a publicly available real-world dataset of a drone flight. Keywords: Ultra-wideband, Inertial measurement unit, Sensor Fusion, Positioning system, GPS-denied navigation.
We propose Super Odometry, a high-precision multi-modal sensor fusion framework, providing a simple but effective way to fuse multiple sensors such as LiDAR, camera, and IMU sensors and achieve robust state estimation in perceptually-degraded environments. Different from traditional sensor-fusion methods, Super Odometry employs an IMU-centric data processing pipeline, which combines the advantages of loosely coupled methods with tightly coupled methods and recovers motion in a coarse-to-fine manner. The proposed framework is composed of three parts: IMU odometry, visual-inertial odometry, and …

Mobile robot positioning, mapping, and navigation systems generally employ an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to obtain the acceleration and angular velocity of the robot. However, errors in the internal and external parameters of an IMU arising from defective calibration directly affect the accuracy of robot positioning and pose estimation. While this issue has been addressed by the mature internal reference calibration methods available for IMUs, external reference calibration methods between the IMU and the chassis of a mobile robot are lacking. This study addresses this issue by proposing …
We present DM-VIO, a monocular visual-inertial odometry system based on two novel techniques called delayed marginalization and pose graph bundle adjustment. DM-VIO performs photometric bundle adjustment with a dynamic weight for visual residuals. We adopt marginalization, which is a popular strategy to keep the update time constrained, but it cannot easily be reversed, and linearization points of connected variables have to be fixed. To overcome this we propose delayed marginalization: The idea is to maintain a second factor graph, where marginalization is delayed. This allows us to later rea…
In this paper, we propose a visual-inertial framework able to efficiently estimate the camera poses of a non-rigid trinocular baseline for long-range depth estimation on-board a fast moving aerial platform. The estimation of the time-varying baseline is based on relative inertial measurements, a photometric relative pose optimizer, and a probabilistic wing model fused in an efficient Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) formulation. The estimated depth measurements can be integrated into a geo-referenced global map to render a reconstruction of the environment useful for local replanning algorithms. B…
Advances in micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) techniques enable inertial measurements units (IMUs) to be small, cheap, energy efficient, and widely used in smartphones, robots, and drones. Exploiting inertial data for accurate and reliable navigation and localization has attracted significant research and industrial interest, as IMU measurements are completely ego-centric and generally environment agnostic. Recent studies have shown that the notorious issue of drift can be significantly alleviated by using deep neural networks (DNNs), e.g. IONet. However, the lack of sufficient labelled data for…

Legged robot navigation in unstructured and slippery terrains depends heavily on the ability to accurately identify the quality of contact between the robot's feet and the ground. Contact state estimation is regarded as a challenging problem and is typically addressed by exploiting force measurements, joint encoders and/or robot kinematics and dynamics. In contrast to most state of the art approaches, the current work introduces a novel probabilistic method for estimating the contact state based solely on proprioceptive sensing, as it is readily available by Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) m…

We aim to enable robots to visually localize a target person through the aid of an additional sensing modality -- the target person's 3D inertial measurements. The need for such technology may arise when a robot is to meet person in a crowd for the first time or when an autonomous vehicle must rendezvous with a rider amongst a crowd without knowing the appearance of the person in advance. A person's inertial information can be measured with a wearable device such as a smart-phone and can be shared selectively with an autonomous system during the rendezvous. We propose a method to learn a visua…

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is a process of concurrent estimation of the vehicle's pose and feature locations with respect to a frame of reference. This paper proposes a computationally cheap geometric nonlinear SLAM filter algorithm structured to mimic the nonlinear motion dynamics of the true SLAM problem posed on the matrix Lie group of $\mathbb{SLAM}_{n}\left(3\right)$. The nonlinear filter on manifold is proposed in continuous form and it utilizes available measurements obtained from group velocity vectors, feature measurements and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The …
This work presents a contracting hierarchical observer that fuses position and orientation measurements with an IMU to generate smooth position, linear velocity, orientation, and IMU bias estimates that are guaranteed to converge to their true values. The proposed approach is composed of two contracting observers. The first is a quaternion-based orientation observer that also estimates gyroscope bias. The output of the orientation observer serves as an input for another contracting observer that estimates position, linear velocity, and accelerometer bias thus forming a hierarchy. We show that …
To obtain a high-accuracy position with SINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System), initial alignment needs to determine initial attitude rapidly and accurately. High-accuracy grade IMU(Inertial Measurement Uint) can obtain the initial attitude indenpendently, however, the low-accuracy grade gyroscope doesn't adapt to determine the heading angle, hence the initial attitude matrix will not be obtained. If using large misalignment angle model to estiamting heading angle, the convergence time will become much longer. For solving these two problems, a novel alignment algorithm combined backtrackin…
Autonomously retracing a manually-taught path is desirable for many applications, and Teach and Repeat (T&R) algorithms present an approach that is suitable for long-range autonomy. In this paper, ultra-wideband (UWB) ranging-based T&R is proposed for vehicles with limited resources. By fixing single UWB transceivers at far-apart unknown locations in an indoor environment, a robot with 3 UWB transceivers builds a locally consistent map during the teach pass by fusing the range measurements under a custom ranging protocol with an on-board IMU and height measurements. The robot then uses informa…
Error distribution analysis is an important assistant technology for the research of SINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System). Error distribution result can provide the contribution of different errors to final navigation error, which is helpful for modifying and optimizing SINS. To realize decomposing the navigation error into parts that caused by each error source, the SINS error state space model is established and covariance matrix is decomposed according to error sources. The proposed error distribution analysis method based on 34-dimension SINS error model can quantitatively analyze th…
This work proposes algorithms for reconstruction of closed-loop pedestrian trajectories based on two foot-mounted inertial measurement units (IMU). The first proposed algorithm allows calculation of a trajectory using measurements from only one IMU. The second algorithm uses data from both foot-mounted IMUs simultaneously. Both algorithms are based on the Kalman filter and the assumption that while a foot is on the ground its velocity is supposed to be zero. Two methods for comparing the obtained trajectories are proposed, advantages and disadvantages of each method are indicated and a way to …
Navigation solutions suitable for cases when both autonomous robot's pose (\textit{i.e}., attitude and position) and its environment are unknown are in great demand. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) fulfills this need by concurrently mapping the environment and observing robot's pose with respect to the map. This work proposes a nonlinear observer for SLAM posed on the manifold of the Lie group of $\mathbb{SLAM}_{n}\left(3\right)$, characterized by systematic convergence, and designed to mimic the nonlinear motion dynamics of the true SLAM problem. The system error is constrained t…
Foot-mounted inertial sensors become popular in many indoor or GPS-denied applications, including but not limited to medical monitoring, gait analysis, soldier and first responder positioning. However, the foot-mounted inertial navigation relies largely on the aid of Zero Velocity Update (ZUPT) and has encountered inherent problems such as heading drift. This paper implements a pedestrian navigation system based on dual foot-mounted low-cost inertial measurement units (IMU) and inter-foot ultrasonic ranging. The observability analysis of the system is performed to investigate the roles of the …
Two novel robust nonlinear stochastic full pose (i.e, attitude and position) estimators on the Special Euclidean Group SE(3) are proposed using the available uncertain measurements. The resulting estimators utilize the basic structure of the deterministic pose estimators adopting it to the stochastic sense. The proposed estimators for six degrees of freedom (DOF) pose estimations consider the group velocity vectors to be contaminated with constant bias and Gaussian random noise, unlike nonlinear deterministic pose estimators which disregard the noise component in the estimator derivations. The…
This paper presents an algorithm that makes novel use of distance measurements alongside a constrained Kalman filter to accurately estimate pelvis, thigh, and shank kinematics for both legs during walking and other body movements using only three wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs). The distance measurement formulation also assumes hinge knee joint and constant body segment length, helping produce estimates that are near or in the constraint space for better estimator stability. Simulated experiments shown that inter-IMU distance measurement is indeed a promising new source of informati…
This paper deals with the problem of full state estimation for vehicles navigating in a three dimensional space. We assume that the vehicle is equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) providing body-frame measurements of the angular velocity, the specific force, and the Earth's magnetic field. Moreover, we consider available sensors that provide partial or full information about the position of the vehicle. Examples of such sensors are those which provide full position measurements (e.g., GPS), range measurements (e.g., Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) sensors), inertial-frame bearing measurement…
Recent human computer-interaction (HCI) studies using electromyography (EMG) and inertial measurement units (IMUs) for upper-limb gesture recognition have claimed that inertial measurements alone result in higher classification accuracy than EMG. In biomedical research such as in prosthesis control, however, EMG remains the gold standard for providing gesture specific information, exceeding the performance of IMUs alone. This study, therefore, presents a preliminary investigation of these conflicting claims between these converging research fields. Previous claims from both fields were verifie…
