Two-dimensional (2D) half-metallic materials are highly desirable for nanoscale spintronic applications. Here, we propose a new mechanism that can achieve half-metallicity in 2D ferromagnetic (FM) material with two-layer magnetic atoms by electric field tuning. We use a concrete example of experimentally synthesized CrSBr monolayer to illustrate our proposal through the first-principle calculations. It is found that the half-metal can be achieved in CrSBr within appropriate electric field range, and the corresponding amplitude of electric field intensity is available in experiment. Janus monolayer $\mathrm{Cr_2S_2BrI}$ is constructed, which possesses built-in electric field due to broken horizontal mirror symmetry. However, $\mathrm{Cr_2S_2BrI}$ without and with applied external electric field is always a FM semiconductor. A possible memory device is also proposed based on CrSBr monolayer. Our works will stimulate the application of 2D FM CrSBr in future spintronic nanodevices.
Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets have recently drawn extensive attention, and here we study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the bulk and monolayer of CrSBr, using first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that bulk CrSBr is a magnetic semiconductor and has the easy magnetization b-axis, hard c-axis, and intermediate a-axis. Thus, the experimental triaxial magnetic anisotropy (MA) is well reproduced here, and it is identified to be the joint effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. We find that bulk CrSBr…

Magnetic excitations in layered magnetic materials that can be thinned down the two-dimensional (2D) monolayer limit are of high interest from a fundamental point of view and for applications perspectives. Raman scattering has played a crucial role in exploring the properties of magnetic layered materials and, even-though it is essentially a probe of lattice vibrations, it can reflect magnetic ordering in solids through the spin-phonon interaction or through the observation of magnon excitations. In bulk CrSBr, a layered A type antiferromagnet (AF), we show that the magnetic ordering can be di…

Identifying intrinsic low-dimensional ferromagnets with high transition temperature and electrically tunable magnetism is crucial for the development of miniaturized spintronics and magnetoelectrics. Recently long-range 2D ferromagnetism was observed in van der Waals crystals CrI$_3$ and Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, however their Curie temperature is significantly lowered when reducing down to monolayer/few layers. Herein, using renormalized spin-wave theory and first-principles electronic structure theory, we present a theoretical study of electrically tunable 2D ferromagnetism in van der Waals layere…

Correlated quantum phenomena in one-dimensional (1D) systems that exhibit competing electronic and magnetic order are of strong interest for studying fundamental interactions and excitations, such as Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids and topological orders and defects with properties completely different from the quasiparticles expected in their higher-dimensional counterparts. However, clean 1D electronic systems are difficult to realize experimentally, particularly magnetically ordered systems. Here, we show that the van der Waals layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr behaves like a quasi-1D materia…
Two-dimensional van der Waals Janus materials and their heterostructures offer fertile platforms for designing fascinating functionalities. Here, by means of systematic first-principles studies on van der Waals Janus monolayer Cr-based dichalcogenide halides CrYX (Y=S, Se, Te; X=Cl, Br, I), we find that CrSX (X=Cl, Br, I) are the very desirable high TC ferromagnetic semiconductors with an out-of-plane magnetization. Excitingly, by the benefit of the large magnetic moments on ligand S2- anions, the sought-after large-gap quantum anomalous Hall effect and sizable valley splitting can be achieved…
Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials present promising candidates for spintronic devices, and the half-metallic materials with 100% spin polarization at Fermi energy level are highly desired for many spin-based devices. 2D Janus materials have attracted great attention in recent years due to their excellent properties induced by breaking the symmetry. Here, using the density functional theory, we report that the Janus V2AsP monolayer demonstrates a charming ferromagnetic half-metallic feature. It is dynamically stable in view of the absence of imaginary frequency phonon. The half-metal…
The electronic and magnetic properties of pristine CrPSe$_3$ and mixed Cr$_{1\textrm{-}x}$M$_x$PSe$_3$ (M = Zn, Cd, Hg) monolayers were studied using density functional theory including an on-site Coulomb term (DFT$+U$) and tight-binding approach (TBA). While pristine CrPSe$_3$ monolayer has an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, its alloying with MPSe$_3$ may give rise to half-metallic ferromagnet (HMF) with high Curie temperature. The resulting monolayers demonstrate single-spin Dirac cones of mainly Cr-$d$ character located in the first Brillouin zone directly at the Fermi energy. The cal…
To obtain high-performance spintronic devices with high integration density, two-dimensional (2D) half-metallic materials are eagerly pursued all along. Here, we propose a stable 2D material with a honeycomb-kagome lattice, i.e., the Mg3C2 monolayer, based on first-principles calculations. This monolayer is an anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor at its ground state. We further demonstrate that a transition from AFM semiconductor to ferromagnetic half-metal in this 2D material can be induced by carrier (electron or hole) doping. This magnetic transition can be understood by the Stoner criter…
Two-dimensional (2D) half-metallic materials are of great interest for their promising applications in spintronics. Although numerous of 2D half-metals have been proposed theoretically, rarely of them can be synthesized experimentally. Here, exemplified by monolayer FeCl2, we show three mechanisms in such quantum magnets that would cause the metal-insulator transition by using first-principles calculations. In particular, half-metallicity, especially that protected by symmetry-induced degeneracies, predicted by the previous theoretical simulations could be destroyed by electron correlation, sp…

The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of single layers of Iron Dichloride (FeCl$_{2}$) were calculated using first principles calculations. We found that the 1T phase of the single layer FeCl$_{2}$ is 0.17 eV/unit cell more favorable than its 1H phase. The structural stability is confirmed by phonon calculations. We found that 1T-FeCl$_{2}$ possess three Raman-active (130, 179 and 237 cm$^{-1}$) and one Infrared-active (279 cm$^{-1}$) phonon branches. The electronic band dispersion of the 1T-FeCl$_{2}$ is calculated using both GGA-PBE and DFT-HSE06 functionals. Both functionals re…
One of the key problems in valleytronics is to realize valley polarization. Ferrovalley (FV) semiconductor and half-valley-metal (HVM) have been proposed, which possess intrinsic spontaneous valley polarization. Here, we propose the concept of quasi-half-valley-metal (QHVM), including electron and hole carriers with only a type of carriers being valley polarized. The QHVM may realize separation function of electron and hole. A concrete example of $\mathrm{VGe_2P_4}$ monolayer is used to illustrate our proposal through the first-principle calculations. To better realize QHVM, the electric field…
Exploring two-dimensional (2D) materials with magnetic ordering is a focus of current research. It remains a challenge to achieve tunable magnetism in a material of one-atom-thickness without introducing extrinsic magnetic atoms or defects. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose that tunable ferromagnetism can be realized in the recently synthesized holey 2D C$_2$N ($h$2D-C$_2$N) monolayer via purely electron doping that can be readily achieved by gating. We show that owing to the prominent van Hove singularity in the band structure, the material exhibits ferromagnetism even …
Two dimensional magnetic materials, with tunable electronic properties could lead to new spintronic, magnetic and magneto-optic applications. Here, we explore intrinsic magnetic ordering in two dimensional monolayers of transition metal tri-halides (MX$_3$, M = V, Cr, Mn, Fe and Ni, and X = F, Cl, Br and I), using density functional theory. We find that other than FeX$_3$ family which has an anti-ferromagnetic ground state, rest of the trihalides are ferromagnetic. Amongst these the VX$_3$ and NiX$_3$ family are found to have the highest magnetic transition temperature, beyond the room tempera…

The $d_{z}^{2}$…
First-principles calculations on the mechanical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of two-dimensional Janus Cr$_2$TeX (X= P, As, Sb) monolayers
We propose that a half semiconducting state can exist in trigonal-prismatic transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers of d$^{1}$ configuration. In that state both electrons and holes are spin polarized and share the same spin channel. On the basis of hybrid density functional theory, we predict in particular that VS$_2$ monolayers are half semiconductors with a direct band gap. Moreover, we find that the conduction electron spin orientation of VS$_2$ switches under moderate strain. Our predictions thus open up intriguing possibilities for applications of VS$_2$ in spintronics and optoe…

Next-generation spintronic devices will benefit from low-dimensionality, ferromagnetism, and half-metallicity, possibly controlled by electric fields. We find these technologically-appealing features to be combined with an exotic microscopic origin of magnetism in doped CdOHCl, a van der Waals material from which 2D layers may be exfoliated. By means of first principles simulations, we predict homogeneous hole-doping to give rise to $p$-band magnetism in both the bulk and monolayer phases and interpret our findings in terms of Stoner instability: as the Fermi level is tuned via hole-doping thr…

Structural and electronic properties of pristine and transition metal doped ZnS monolayer are investigated within the framework of density functional theory. The pristine ZnS monolayer is showing direct band gap of about 2.8 eV. The investigated transition metal doping showed the transition from non-magnetic semiconductor to a magnetic system e.g. magnetic semiconductor for Co doped ZnS and half metal for Ni doped ZnS monolayers. The Co doped ZnS monolayer showed higher formation energy, confirming the strong bonding than that of Ni doped ZnS monolayer. The electron difference density shows th…
We find, through first-principles calculations, that hole doping induces a ferromagnetic phase transition in monolayer GaSe. Upon increasing hole density, the average spin magnetic moment per carrier increases and reaches a plateau near 1.0 $μ_{\rm{B}}$/carrier in a range of $3\times 10^{13}$/cm$^{2}$-$1\times 10^{14}$/cm$^{2}$ with the system in a half-metal state before the moment starts to descend abruptly. The predicted magnetism originates from an exchange splitting of electronic states at the top of the valence band where the density of states exhibits a sharp van Hove singularity in thi…
We propose a new topological quantum state of matter---the two-dimensional (2D) Weyl half semimetal (WHS), which features 2D Weyl points at Fermi level belonging to a single spin channel, such that the low-energy electrons are described by fully spin-polarized 2D Weyl fermions. We predict its realization in the ground state of monolayer PtCl$_3$. We show that the material is a half metal with an in-plane magnetization, and its Fermi surface consists of a pair of fully spin-polarized Weyl points protected by a mirror symmetry, which are robust against spin-orbit coupling. Remarkably, we show th…
