Chinese Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) error correction presents significant challenges due to the Chinese language's unique features, including a large character set and borderless, morpheme-based structure. Current mainstream models often struggle with effectively utilizing word-level features and phonetic information. This paper introduces a novel approach that incorporates a dynamic error scaling mechanism to detect and correct phonetically erroneous text generated by ASR output. This mechanism operates by dynamically fusing word-level features and phonetic information, thereby enriching the model with additional semantic data. Furthermore, our method implements unique error reduction and amplification strategies to address the issues of matching wrong words caused by incorrect characters. Experimental results indicate substantial improvements in ASR error correction, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed method and yielding promising results on established datasets.
Named Entity Recognition (NER) from speech is among Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) tasks, aiming to extract semantic information from the speech signal. NER from speech is usually made through a two-step pipeline that consists of (1) processing the audio using an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system and (2) applying an NER tagger to the ASR outputs. Recent works have shown the capability of the End-to-End (E2E) approach for NER from English and French speech, which is essentially entity-aware ASR. However, due to the many homophones and polyphones that exist in Chinese, NER from Chin…
End-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) has achieved promising results. However, most existing end-to-end ASR methods neglect the use of specific language characteristics. For Mandarin Chinese ASR tasks, there exist mutual promotion relationship between Pinyin and Character where Chinese characters can be romanized by Pinyin. Based on the above intuition, we first investigate types of end-to-end encoder-decoder based models in the single-input dual-output (SIDO) multi-task framework, after which a novel asynchronous decoding with fuzzy Pinyin sampling method is proposed according to the …

In this paper, we present promising accurate prefix boosting (PAPB), a discriminative training technique for attention based sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) ASR. PAPB is devised to unify the training and testing scheme in an effective manner. The training procedure involves maximizing the score of each partial correct sequence obtained during beam search compared to other hypotheses. The training objective also includes minimization of token (character) error rate. PAPB shows its efficacy by achieving 10.8\% and 3.8\% WER with and without RNNLM respectively on Wall Street Journal dataset.

Much of the recent literature on automatic speech recognition (ASR) is taking an end-to-end approach. Unlike English where the writing system is closely related to sound, Chinese characters (Hanzi) represent meaning, not sound. We propose factoring audio -> Hanzi into two sub-tasks: (1) audio -> Pinyin and (2) Pinyin -> Hanzi, where Pinyin is a system of phonetic transcription of standard Chinese. Factoring the audio -> Hanzi task in this way achieves 3.9% CER (character error rate) on the Aishell-1 corpus, the best result reported on this dataset so far.
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems frequently use a search-based decoding strategy aiming to find the best attainable transcript by considering multiple candidates. One prominent speech recognition decoding heuristic is beam search, which seeks the transcript with the greatest likelihood computed using the predicted distribution. While showing substantial performance gains in various tasks, beam search loses some of its effectiveness when the predicted probabilities are highly confident, i.e., the predicted distribution is massed for a single or very few classes. We show that recently …

We propose a unified framework for low resource automatic speech recognition tasks named meta audio concatenation (MAC). It is easy to implement and can be carried out in extremely low resource environments. Mathematically, we give a clear description of MAC framework from the perspective of bayesian sampling. In this framework, we leverage a novel concatenative synthesis text-to-speech system to boost the low resource ASR task. By the concatenative synthesis text-to-speech system, we can integrate language pronunciation rules and adjust the TTS process. Furthermore, we propose a broad notion …

Code-switching automatic speech recognition becomes one of the most challenging and the most valuable scenarios of automatic speech recognition, due to the code-switching phenomenon between multilingual language and the frequent occurrence of code-switching phenomenon in daily life. The ISCSLP 2022 Chinese-English Code-Switching Automatic Speech Recognition (CSASR) Challenge aims to promote the development of code-switching automatic speech recognition. The ISCSLP 2022 CSASR challenge provided two training sets, TAL_CSASR corpus and MagicData-RAMC corpus, a development and a test set for parti…
Spoken dialogue systems such as Siri and Alexa provide great convenience to people's everyday life. However, current spoken language understanding (SLU) pipelines largely depend on automatic speech recognition (ASR) modules, which require a large amount of language-specific training data. In this paper, we propose a Transformer-based SLU system that works directly on phones. This acoustic-based SLU system consists of only two blocks and does not require the presence of ASR module. The first block is a universal phone recognition system, and the second block is a Transformer-based language mode…

The choice of modeling units is critical to automatic speech recognition (ASR) tasks. Conventional ASR systems typically choose context-dependent states (CD-states) or context-dependent phonemes (CD-phonemes) as their modeling units. However, it has been challenged by sequence-to-sequence attention-based models, which integrate an acoustic, pronunciation and language model into a single neural network. On English ASR tasks, previous attempts have already shown that the modeling unit of graphemes can outperform that of phonemes by sequence-to-sequence attention-based model. In this paper, we ar…

Due to the recent advances of natural language processing, several works have applied the pre-trained masked language model (MLM) of BERT to the post-correction of speech recognition. However, existing pre-trained models only consider the semantic correction while the phonetic features of words is neglected. The semantic-only post-correction will consequently decrease the performance since homophonic errors are fairly common in Chinese ASR. In this paper, we proposed a novel approach to collectively exploit the contextualized representation and the phonetic information between the error and it…
Social robots deployed in public spaces present a challenging task for ASR because of a variety of factors, including noise SNR of 20 to 5 dB. Existing ASR models perform well for higher SNRs in this range, but degrade considerably with more noise. This work explores methods for providing improved ASR performance in such conditions. We use the AiShell-1 Chinese speech corpus and the Kaldi ASR toolkit for evaluations. We were able to exceed state-of-the-art ASR performance with SNR lower than 20 dB, demonstrating the feasibility of achieving relatively high performing ASR with open-source toolk…

Performance of spoken language understanding (SLU) can be degraded with automatic speech recognition (ASR) errors. We propose a novel approach to improve SLU robustness by randomly corrupting clean training text with an ASR error simulator, followed by self-correcting the errors and minimizing the target classification loss in a joint manner. In the proposed error simulator, we leverage confusion networks generated from an ASR decoder without human transcriptions to generate a variety of error patterns for model training. We evaluate our approach on the DSTC10 challenge targeted for knowledge-…

Sequence-to-sequence attention-based models have recently shown very promising results on automatic speech recognition (ASR) tasks, which integrate an acoustic, pronunciation and language model into a single neural network. In these models, the Transformer, a new sequence-to-sequence attention-based model relying entirely on self-attention without using RNNs or convolutions, achieves a new single-model state-of-the-art BLEU on neural machine translation (NMT) tasks. Since the outstanding performance of the Transformer, we extend it to speech and concentrate on it as the basic architecture of s…

It was released with a baseline system containing solid training and testing pipelines for Mandarin ASR. In AISHELL-2, 1000 hours of clean read-speech data from iOS is published, which is free for academic usage. On top of AISHELL-2 corpus, an improved recipe is developed and released, containing key components for industrial applications, such as Chinese word segmentation, flexible vocabulary expension and phone set transformation etc. Pipelines support various state-of-the-art techni…
When we use End-to-end automatic speech recognition (E2E-ASR) system for real-world applications, a voice activity detection (VAD) system is usually needed to improve the performance and to reduce the computational cost by discarding non-speech parts in the audio. Usually ASR and VAD systems are trained and utilized independently to each other. In this paper, we present a novel multi-task learning (MTL) framework that incorporates VAD into the ASR system. The proposed system learns ASR and VAD jointly in the training stage. With the assistance of VAD, the ASR performance improves as its connec…

The performance of speech-processing models is heavily influenced by the speech corpus that is used for training and evaluation. In this study, we propose BAlanced Script PROducer (BASPRO) system, which can automatically construct a phonetically balanced and rich set of Chinese sentences for collecting Mandarin Chinese speech data. First, we used pretrained natural language processing systems to extract ten-character candidate sentences from a large corpus of Chinese news texts. Then, we applied a genetic algorithm-based method to select 20 phonetically balanced sentence sets, each containing …
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), as the assistance of speech communication between pilots and air-traffic controllers, can significantly reduce the complexity of the task and increase the reliability of transmitted information. ASR application can lead to a lower number of incidents caused by misunderstanding and improve air traffic management (ATM) efficiency. Evidently, high accuracy predictions, especially, of key information, i.e., callsigns and commands, are required to minimize the risk of errors. We prove that combining the benefits of ASR and Natural Language Processing (NLP) method…
Personal rare word recognition in end-to-end Automatic Speech Recognition (E2E ASR) models is a challenge due to the lack of training data. A standard way to address this issue is with shallow fusion methods at inference time. However, due to their dependence on external language models and the deterministic approach to weight boosting, their performance is limited. In this paper, we propose training neural contextual adapters for personalization in neural transducer based ASR models. Our approach can not only bias towards user-defined words, but also has the flexibility to work with pretraine…

This paper proposes InterAug: a novel training method for CTC-based ASR using augmented intermediate representations for conditioning. The proposed method exploits the conditioning framework of self-conditioned CTC to train robust models by conditioning with "noisy" intermediate predictions. During the training, intermediate predictions are changed to incorrect intermediate predictions, and fed into the next layer for conditioning. The subsequent layers are trained to correct the incorrect intermediate predictions with the intermediate losses. By repeating the augmentation and the correction, …

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is greatly developed in recent years, which expedites many applications on other fields. For the ASR research, speech corpus is always an essential foundation, especially for the vertical industry, such as Air Traffic Control (ATC). There are some speech corpora for common applications, public or paid. However, for the ATC, it is difficult to collect raw speeches from real systems due to safety issues. More importantly, for a supervised learning task like ASR, annotating the transcription is a more laborious work, which hugely restricts the prospect of ASR ap…
