Omnidirectional videos (ODVs) play an increasingly important role in the application fields of medical, education, advertising, tourism, etc. Assessing the quality of ODVs is significant for service-providers to improve the user's Quality of Experience (QoE). However, most existing quality assessment studies for ODVs only focus on the visual distortions of videos, while ignoring that the overall QoE also depends on the accompanying audio signals. In this paper, we first establish a large-scale audio-visual quality assessment dataset for omnidirectional videos, which includes 375 distorted omnidirectional audio-visual (A/V) sequences generated from 15 high-quality pristine omnidirectional A/V contents, and the corresponding perceptual audio-visual quality scores. Then, we design three baseline methods for full-reference omnidirectional audio-visual quality assessment (OAVQA), which combine existing state-of-the-art single-mode audio and video QA models via multimodal fusion strategies. We validate the effectiveness of the A/V multimodal fusion method for OAVQA on our dataset, which provides a new benchmark for omnidirectional QoE evaluation. Our dataset is available at https://github.com/iamazxl/OAVQA.

To open up new possibilities to assess the multimodal perceptual quality of omnidirectional media formats, we proposed a novel open source 360 audiovisual (AV) quality dataset. The dataset consists of high-quality 360 video clips in equirectangular (ERP) format and higher-order ambisonic (4th order) along with the subjective scores. Three subjective quality experiments were conducted for audio, video, and AV with the procedures detailed in this paper. Using the data from subjective tests, we demonstrated that this dataset can be used to quantify perceived audio, video, and audiovisual quality.…

In an earlier study, we gathered perceptual evaluations of the audio, video, and audiovisual quality for 360 audiovisual content. This paper investigates perceived audiovisual quality prediction based on objective quality metrics and subjective scores of 360 video and spatial audio content. Thirteen objective video quality metrics and three objective audio quality metrics were evaluated for five stimuli for each coding parameter. Four regression-based machine learning models were trained and tested here, i.e., multiple linear regression, decision tree, random forest, and support vector machine…

Video saliency detection (VSD) aims at fast locating the most attractive objects/things/patterns in a given video clip. Existing VSD-related works have mainly relied on the visual system but paid less attention to the audio aspect, while, actually, our audio system is the most vital complementary part to our visual system. Also, audio-visual saliency detection (AVSD), one of the most representative research topics for mimicking human perceptual mechanisms, is currently in its infancy, and none of the existing survey papers have touched on it, especially from the perspective of saliency detecti…

Optical flow estimation has been a long-lasting and fundamental problem in the computer vision community. However, despite the advances of optical flow estimation in perspective videos, the 360$^\circ$ videos counterpart remains in its infancy, primarily due to the shortage of benchmark datasets and the failure to accommodate the omnidirectional nature of 360$^\circ$ videos. We propose the first perceptually realistic 360$^\circ$ filed-of-view video benchmark dataset, namely FLOW360, with 40 different videos and 4,000 video frames. We then conduct comprehensive characteristic analysis and exte…

Omnidirectional images and videos can provide immersive experience of real-world scenes in Virtual Reality (VR) environment. We present a perceptual omnidirectional image quality assessment (IQA) study in this paper since it is extremely important to provide a good quality of experience under the VR environment. We first establish an omnidirectional IQA (OIQA) database, which includes 16 source images and 320 distorted images degraded by 4 commonly encountered distortion types, namely JPEG compression, JPEG2000 compression, Gaussian blur and Gaussian noise. Then a subjective quality evaluation…
Due to the strong correlation between visual attention and perceptual quality, many methods attempt to use human saliency information for image quality assessment. Although this mechanism can get good performance, the networks require human saliency labels, which is not easily accessible for omnidirectional images (ODI). To alleviate this issue, we propose a spatial attention-based perceptual quality prediction network for non-reference quality assessment on ODIs (SAP-net). To drive our SAP-net, we establish a large-scale IQA dataset of ODIs (IQA-ODI), which is composed of subjective scores of…

Omnidirectional images (also referred to as static 360° panoramas) impose viewing conditions much different from those of regular 2D images. How do humans perceive image distortions in immersive virtual reality (VR) environments is an important problem which receives less attention. We argue that, apart from the distorted panorama itself, two types of VR viewing conditions are crucial in determining the viewing behaviors of users and the perceived quality of the panorama: the starting point and the exploration time. We first carry out a psychophysical experiment to investigate the interplay am…
Omnidirectional image quality assessment (OIQA) aims to predict the perceptual quality of omnidirectional images that cover the whole 180$\times$360$^{\circ}$ viewing range of the visual environment. Here we propose a blind/no-reference OIQA method named S$^2$ that bridges the gap between low-level statistics and high-level semantics of omnidirectional images. Specifically, statistic and semantic features are extracted in separate paths from multiple local viewports and the hallucinated global omnidirectional image, respectively. A quality regression along with a weighting process is then foll…

Optical flow estimation in omnidirectional videos faces two significant issues: the lack of benchmark datasets and the challenge of adapting perspective video-based methods to accommodate the omnidirectional nature. This paper proposes the first perceptually natural-synthetic omnidirectional benchmark dataset with a 360-degree field of view, FLOW360, with 40 different videos and 4,000 video frames. We conduct comprehensive characteristic analysis and comparisons between our dataset and existing optical flow datasets, which manifest perceptual realism, uniqueness, and diversity. To accommodate …

Objective quality assessment of stereoscopic omnidirectional images is a challenging problem since it is influenced by multiple aspects such as projection deformation, field of view (FoV) range, binocular vision, visual comfort, etc. Existing studies show that classic 2D or 3D image quality assessment (IQA) metrics are not able to perform well for stereoscopic omnidirectional images. However, very few research works have focused on evaluating the perceptual visual quality of omnidirectional images, especially for stereoscopic omnidirectional images. In this paper, based on the predictive codin…
In this paper, we propose a novel virtual reality image quality assessment (VR IQA) with adversarial learning for omnidirectional images. To take into account the characteristics of the omnidirectional image, we devise deep networks including novel quality score predictor and human perception guider. The proposed quality score predictor automatically predicts the quality score of distorted image using the latent spatial and position feature. The proposed human perception guider criticizes the predicted quality score of the predictor with the human perceptual score using adversarial learning. F…

Incorporating the audio stream enables Video Saliency Prediction (VSP) to imitate the selective attention mechanism of human brain. By focusing on the benefits of joint auditory and visual information, most VSP methods are capable of exploiting semantic correlation between vision and audio modalities but ignoring the negative effects due to the temporal inconsistency of audio-visual intrinsics. Inspired by the biological inconsistency-correction within multi-sensory information, in this study, a consistency-aware audio-visual saliency prediction network (CASP-Net) is proposed, which takes a co…

The field of steganography has experienced a surge of interest due to the recent advancements in AI-powered techniques, particularly in the context of multimodal setups that enable the concealment of signals within signals of a different nature. The primary objectives of all steganographic methods are to achieve perceptual transparency, robustness, and large embedding capacity - which often present conflicting goals that classical methods have struggled to reconcile. This paper extends and enhances an existing image-in-audio deep steganography method by focusing on improving its robustness. Th…

We formulate a selection of sparse visual inputs suitable for locomotion over the terrains of interest, and propose a learning framework to integrate exteroceptive and proprioceptive states. We specifically design the state observations and a training curriculum to lear…

The recent state of the art on monocular 3D face reconstruction from image data has made some impressive advancements, thanks to the advent of Deep Learning. However, it has mostly focused on input coming from a single RGB image, overlooking the following important factors: a) Nowadays, the vast majority of facial image data of interest do not originate from single images but rather from videos, which contain rich dynamic information. b) Furthermore, these videos typically capture individuals in some form of verbal communication (public talks, teleconferences, audiovisual human-computer intera…
