Stellar ages are critical for understanding the temporal evolution of a galaxy. We calculate the ages of over 6000 red giant branch stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) observed with SDSS-IV / APOGEE-S. Ages are derived using multi-band photometry, spectroscopic parameters (T$_\text{eff}$, $\log{g}$, [Fe/H], and [$α$/Fe]) and stellar isochrones and the assumption that the stars lie in a thin inclined plane to get accurate distances. The isochrone age and extinction are varied until a best match is found for the observed photometry. We perform validation using the APOKASC sample, which has asteroseismic masses and accurate ages, and find that our uncertainties are $\sim$20% and range from $\sim$1$-$3 Gyr for the calculated age values. Here we present the LMC age map as well as the age-radius relation and an accurate age-metallicity relation (AMR). The age map and age-radius relation reveal that recent star formation in the galaxy was more centrally located and that there is a slight dichotomy between the north and south with the northern fields being slightly younger. The northern fields that cover a known spiral arm have median ages of $\gtrsim$ 2 Gyr, which is the time when an interaction with the SMC is suggested to have happened. The AMR is mostly flat especially for older ages although recently (about 2.0-2.5 Gyr ago) there is an increase in the median [Fe/H]. Based on the time frame, this might also be attributed to the close interaction between the LMC and SMC.

We present a sample of local red giant stars observed using the New Mexico State University 1 m telescope with the APOGEE spectrograph, for which we estimate stellar ages and the age distribution from the high-resolution spectroscopic stellar parameters and accurate distance measurements from Hipparcos. The high-resolution (R ~ 23,000), near infrared (H-band, 1.5-1.7 micron) APOGEE spectra provide measurements of the stellar atmospheric parameters (temperature, surface gravity, [M/H], and [alpha/M]). Due to the smaller uncertainties in surface gravity possible with high-resolution spectra and …

We report the first APOGEE metallicities and alpha-element abundances measured for 3600 red giant stars spanning a large radial range of both the Large (LMC) and Small Magellanic Clouds (SMC), the largest Milky Way dwarf galaxies. Our sample is an order of magnitude larger than that of previous studies, and extends to much larger radial distances. These are the first results presented that make use of the newly installed Southern APOGEE instrument on the du Pont telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. Our unbiased sample of the LMC spans a large range in metallicity, from [Fe/H]=-0.2 to very me…
In a companion paper, we have presented the combined asteroseismic-spectroscopic dataset obtained from CoRoT lightcurves and APOGEE infra-red spectra for 678 solar-like oscillating red giants in two fields of the Galactic disc (CoRoGEE). We have measured chemical abundance patterns, distances, and ages of these field stars which are spread over a large radial range of the Milky Way's disc. Here we show how to simulate this dataset using a chemodynamical Galaxy model. We also demonstrate how the observation procedure influences the accuracy of our estimated ages.
We report the first 3-D kinematical measurements of 88 stars in the direction of several recently discovered substructures in the southern periphery of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using a combination of Gaia proper motions and radial velocities from the APOGEE-2 survey. More specifically, we explore stars lie in assorted APOGEE-2 pointings in a region of the LMC periphery where various overdensities of stars have previously been identified in maps of stars from Gaia and DECam. By using a model of the LMC disk rotation, we find that a sizeable fraction of the APOGEE-2 stars have extreme sp…
Baade's window (BW) is one of the most observed Galactic bulge fields in terms of chemical abundances. Due to its low and homogeneous interstellar absorption it is considered as a calibration field for Galactic bulge studies. In the era of large spectroscopic surveys, calibration fields such as BW are necessary to cross calibrate the stellar parameters and individual abundances of the APOGEE survey. We use the APOGEE BW stars to derive their metallicity distribution function (MDF) and individual abundances, for $α$- and iron-peak elements of the APOGEE ASPCAP pipeline (DR13), as well as the ag…
We present [C/N]-[Fe/H] abundance trends from the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey, Data Release 14 (DR14), for red giant branch stars across the Milky Way Galaxy (MW, 3 kpc $<$ R $<$ 15 kpc). The carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (often expressed as [C/N]) can indicate the mass of a red giant star, from which an age can be inferred. Using masses and ages derived by Martig et al., we demonstrate that we are able to interpret the DR14 [C/N]-[Fe/H] abundance distributions as trends in age-[Fe/H] space. Our results show that an anti-correlation between age and…
We present a new study of the spatial distribution and ages of the star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). To detect and estimate the ages of the star clusters we rely on the new fully-automated method developed by Bitsakis et al. (2017). Our code detects 1319 star clusters in the central 18 deg$^{2}$ of the SMC we surveyed (1108 of which have never been reported before). The age distribution of those clusters suggests enhanced cluster formation around 240 Myr ago. It also implies significant differences in the cluster distribution of the bar with respect to the rest of the galaxy, …

We use models of stellar angular momentum evolution to determine ages for $\sim500$ stars in the APOGEE-\textit{Kepler} Cool Dwarfs sample. We focus on lower main-sequence stars, where other age-dating tools become ineffective. Our age distributions are compared to those derived from asteroseismic and giant samples and solar analogs. We are able to recover gyrochronological ages for old, lower-main-sequence stars, a remarkable improvement over prior work in hotter stars. Under our model assumptions, our ages have a median relative uncertainty of $14\%$, comparable to the age precision inferred…
We present our new, fully-automated method to detect and measure the ages of star clusters in nearby galaxies, where individual stars can be resolved. The method relies purely on statistical analysis of observations and Monte-Carlo simulations to define stellar overdensities in the data. It decontaminates the cluster color-magnitude diagrams and, using a revised version of the Bayesian isochrone fitting code of Ramirez-Siordia et al., estimates the ages of the clusters. Comparisons of our estimates with those from other surveys show the superiority of our method to extract and measure the ages…
Large scale surveys open the possibility to investigate Galactic evolution both chemically and kinematically, however, reliable stellar ages remain a major challenge. Detailed chemical information provided by high-resolution spectroscopic surveys of the stars in clusters can be used as a means to calibrate recently developed chemical tools for age-dating field stars. Using data from the Open Cluster Abundances and Mapping (OCCAM) survey, based on the SDSS/APOGEE-2 survey, we derive a new empirical relationship between open cluster stellar ages and the carbon-to-nitrogen ([C/N]) abundance ratio…
A cold high-velocity (HV, $\sim$ 200 km/s) peak was first reported in several Galactic bulge fields based on the APOGEE commissioning observations. Both the existence and the nature of the high-velocity peak are still under debate. Here we revisit this feature with the latest APOGEE DR13 data. We find that most of the low latitude bulge fields display a skewed Gaussian distribution with a HV shoulder. However, only 3 out of 53 fields show distinct high-velocity peaks around 200 km/s. The velocity distribution can be well described by Gauss-Hermite polynomials, except the three fields showing c…
The formation of the Galactic disc is an enthusiastically debated issue. Numerous studies and models seek to identify the dominant physical process(es) that shaped its observed properties. Taking advantage of the improved coverage of the inner Milky Way provided by the SDSS DR16 APOGEE catalogue and of the ages published in the APOGEE-AstroNN Value Added Catalogue (VAC), we examine the radial evolution of the chemical and age properties of the Galactic stellar disc, with the aim to better constrain its formation. Using a sample of 199,307 giant stars with precise APOGEE abundances and APOGEE-a…
We present stellar age distributions of the Milky Way (MW) bulge region using ages for $\sim$6,000 high-luminosity ($\log(g) < 2.0$), metal-rich ($\rm [Fe/H] \ge -0.5$) bulge stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). Ages are derived using {\it The Cannon} label-transfer method, trained on a sample of nearby luminous giants with precise parallaxes for which we obtain ages using a Bayesian isochrone-matching technique. We find that the metal-rich bulge is predominantly composed of old stars ($>$8 Gyr). We find evidence that the planar region of the b…
We train a convolutional neural network, APOGEE Net, to predict $T_\mathrm{eff}$, $\log g$, and, for some stars, [Fe/H], based on the APOGEE spectra. This is the first pipeline adapted for these data that is capable of estimating these parameters in a self-consistent manner not only for low mass stars, (such as main sequence dwarfs, pre-main sequence stars, and red giants), but also high mass stars with $T_\mathrm{eff}$ in excess of 50,000 K, including hot dwarfs and blue supergiants. The catalog of ~650,000 stars presented in this paper allows for a detailed investigation of the star forming …
We measure carbon and nitrogen abundances to $\lesssim$ 0.1 dex for 450,000 giant stars from their low-resolution (R$\sim$1800) LAMOST DR2 survey spectra. We use these [C/M] and [N/M] measurements, together with empirical relations based on the APOKASC sample, to infer stellar masses and implied ages for 230,000 of these objects to 0.08 dex and 0.2 dex respectively. We use The Cannon, a data-driven approach to spectral modeling, to construct a predictive model for LAMOST spectra. Our reference set comprises 8125 stars observed in common between the APOGEE and LAMOST surveys, taking seven APOGE…
The YMCA (Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again) and STEP ({The SMC in Time: Evolution of a Prototype interacting late-type dwarf galaxy) projects are deep g,i photometric surveys carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and devoted to study the outskirts of the Magellanic System. A main goal of YMCA and STEP is to identify candidate stellar clusters and complete their census out to the outermost regions of the Magellanic Clouds. We adopted a specific over-density search technique coupled with a visual inspection of the color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to select the best candidates and estimate t…
We derive the spatially-resolved star formation history (SFH) for a $96$ deg$^2$ area across the main body of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the near-infrared photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC). The data and analyses are characterised by a great degree of homogeneity and a low sensitivity to the interstellar extinction. 756 subregions of size $0.125$ deg$^2$ -- corresponding to projected sizes of about $296\times322\,\mathrm{pc}^{2}$ in the LMC -- are analysed. The resulting SFH maps, with typical resolution of $0.2$--$0.3$ dex in logarithm of age, reveal …
A catalogue of asteroseismically calibrated ages for APOGEE DR17. The predictions of a CatBoost machine learning model based on the [Mg/Ce] chemical clock and other stellar parameters
In this paper, we study the age and spatial distributions of Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) as a function of their ages using the data from the OGLE III photometric catalogue. A period-age (PA) relation derived for the Classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been used to find the ages of Cepheids. The age distribution of the SMC Classical Cepheids is found to have a peak at log(Age) = 8.40+/-0.10 which suggests that a major star formation event might have occurred in the SMC at about 250+/-50 Myrs ago. It is believed that this star forming burst had been trigge…
We study 147 star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in order to determine their mean metallicities and ages, as well as the mean metallicities of 80 surrounding fields. We construct an age-metallicity relation (AMR) for the clusters in the LMC. For this purpose, we used Strömgren photometry obtained with the SOI camera on the 4.1 m SOAR telescope. We found the mean metallicity and age for 110 star clusters. For the remaining 37, we provide an age estimation only. To the best of our knowledge, for 29 clusters from our sample, we provide both the metallicity and age for the first time…
In the era of large high-resolution spectroscopic surveys, high-quality spectra can contribute to our understanding of the Galactic chemical evolution, providing chemical abundances belonging to the different nucleosynthesis channels, and also providing constraints to stellar age. Some abundance ratios have been proven to be excellent indicators of stellar ages. We aim at providing an empirical relationship between stellar ages and [C/N] using, as calibrators, open star clusters observed by both the Gaia-ESO and APOGEE surveys. We use stellar parameters and abundances from the Gaia-ESO and APO…
The X-ray emission from a supernova remnant is a powerful diagnostic of the state of its shocked plasma. The temperature and the emission measure are related to the energy of the explosion, the age of the remnant, and the density of the surrounding medium. Here we present the results of a study of the remnant population of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Progress in X-ray observations of remnants has resulted in a sample of 20 remnants in the Small Magellanic Clound with measured temperatures and emission measures. We apply spherically symmetric supernova remnant evolution models to this set of re…
We present results based on YJKs photometry of star clusters located in the outermost, eastern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We analysed a total of 51 catalogued clusters whose colour--magnitude diagrams (CMDs), having been cleaned from field-star contamination, were used to assess the clusters' reality and estimate ages of the genuine systems. Based on CMD analysis, 15 catalogued clusters were found to be possible non-genuine aggregates. We investigated the properties of 80% of the catalogued clusters in this part of the SMC by enlarging our sample with previously obtained clust…
The best way to trace back the history of star formation and mass assembly of the Milky Way disc is by combining chemical compositions, ages and phase-space information for a large number of disc stars. With the advent of large surveys of the stellar populations of the Galaxy, such data have become available and can be used to pose constraints on sophisticated models of galaxy formation. We use SDSS-III/APOGEE data to derive the first detailed 3D map of stellar density in the Galactic disc as a function of age, [Fe/H] and $\mathrm{[α/Fe]}$. We discuss the implications of our results for the fo…
Context: Analysis of ages and metallicities of star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds provide information for studies on the chemical evolution of the Clouds and other dwarf irregular galaxies. Aims: The aim is to derive ages and metallicities from integrated spectra of 14 star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud, including a few intermediate/old age star clusters. Methods: Making use of a full-spectrum fitting technique, we compared the integrated spectra of the sample clusters to three different sets of single stellar population models, using two fitting codes available in the literature.…
To enlarge our growing sample of well-studied star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), we present CCD Washington CT1 photometry to T1 ~ 23 in the fields of twenty-three mostly unstudied clusters located in the inner disc and outer regions of the LMC. We estimated cluster radii from star counts. Using the cluster Washington (T1,C-T1) colour-magnitude diagrams, statistically cleaned from field star contamination, we derived cluster ages and metallicities from a comparison with theoretical isochrones of the Padova group. Whenever possible, we also derived ages using delta_T1 - the magni…
New star cluster candidates projected toward the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (L/SMC) have been recently discovered from relatively deep imaging surveys. We here conduct a sound analysis of 24 star cluster candidates located in the outer regions of the L/SMC using PSF photometry produced by the Survey of the Magellanic Stellar History. With only one exception, the studied objects resulted to be genuine stellar aggregates. We conclude on their physical reality once their observed color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) were statistically decontaminated by the presence of field stars, and the resul…
In this paper we refine our method for the abundance analysis of high resolution spectroscopy of the integrated light of unresolved globular clusters (GCs). This method was previously demonstrated for the analysis of old ($>$10 Gyr) Milky Way GCs. Here we extend the technique to young clusters using a training set of 9 GCs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Depending on the signal-to-noise ratio of the data, we use 20-100 Fe lines per cluster to successfully constrain the ages of old clusters to within a $\sim$5 Gyr range, the ages of $\sim$2 Gyr clusters to a 1-2 Gyr range, and the ages of …
We present for the first time CCD SDSS gr photometry, obtained at the Gemini South telescope with the GMOS attached, of stars in the field of the poorly studied star clusters NGC1768, HS85, SL676, NGC2107, NGC2190, and SL866, which are distributed in the main body of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We applied a subtraction procedure to statistically clean the cluster CMDs from field star contamination. In order to disentangle cluster features from those belonging to their surrounding fields, we applied a subtraction procedure which makes use of variable cells to reproduce the field star Color-Magn…
In this work we analyse Colour-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) of catalogued star clusters located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), from a YJKs photometric data set obtained by the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). We studied a total of 98 objects of small angular size, typically ~ 11.6 pc in diameter projected towards both uncrowded tile LMC 8_8 and crowded tile LMC 5_5. They populate relatively crowded LMC fields with significant fluctuations in the stellar density, the luminosity function, and the colour distribution as w…
We investigate the metallicity, age, and orbital anatomy of the inner Milky Way, specifically focussing on the outer bar region. We integrated a sample of APOGEE DR16 inner Galaxy stars in a state of the art bar-bulge potential with a slow pattern speed and investigated the link between the resulting orbits and their [Fe/H] and ages. By superimposing the orbits, we built density, [Fe/H], and age maps of the inner Milky Way, which we divided further using the orbital parameters eccentricity, |Xmax|, and |Zmax|. We find that at low heights from the Galactic plane, the Galactic bar gradually tran…
Integrated light spectroscopy from galaxies can be used to study the stellar populations that cannot be resolved into individual stars. This analysis relies on stellar population synthesis (SPS) techniques to study the formation history and structure of galaxies. However, the spectral templates available for SPS are limited, especially in the near-infrared. We present A-LIST (APOGEE Library of Infrared SSP Templates), a new set of high-resolution, near-IR SSP spectral templates spanning a wide range of ages (2-12 Gyr), metallicities ($\rm -2.2 < [M/H] < +0.4$) and $α$ abundances ($\rm -0.2 < […
We analyze Hubble Space Telescope observations of six globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud from program GO-14164 in Cycle 23. These are the deepest available observations of the LMC globular cluster population; their uniformity facilitates a precise comparison with globular clusters in the Milky Way. Measuring the magnitude of the main sequence turnoff point relative to template Galactic globular clusters allows the relative ages of the clusters to be determined with a mean precision of 8.4%, and down to 6% for individual objects. We find that the mean age of our LMC cluster ensembl…
We present results from Washington CT1 photometry for eleven star fields located in the western outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), which cover angular distances to its centre from 2 up to 13 degrees (~ 2.2 - 13.8 kpc). The colour- magnitude diagrams, cleaned from the unavoidable Milky Way (MW) and background galaxy signatures, reveal that the most distant dominant main sequence (MS) stellar populations from the SMC centre are located at an angular distance of ~ 5.7 deg (6.1 kpc); no sign of farther clear SMC MS is visible other than the residuals from the MW/background field contam…
In this paper we study the Cepheids distribution in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as a function of their ages using data from the OGLE III photometric catalogue. To determine age of the Pop I Cepheids, we derived a period-age (PA) relationship using the Cepheids found in the LMC star clusters. We find two peaks in the period distribution at logP =0.49+/-0.01 and logP =0.28+/-0.01 days which correspond to fundamental and first overtone pulsation modes, respectively. Ages of the Cepheids are used to understand star formation scenario in the LMC in last 30-600 Myr. The age distribution of the …
In this work we study 35 stellar clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in order to provide their mean metallicities and ages. We also provide mean metallicities of the fields surrounding the clusters. We used Strömgren photometry obtained with the 4.1 m SOAR telescope and take advantage of $(b - y)$ and $m1$ colors for which there is a metallicity calibration presented in the literature. The spatial metallicity and age distributions of clusters across the SMC are investigated using the results obtained by Strömgren photometry. We confirm earlier observations that younger, more metal-ric…
We revisit the stellar velocity distribution in the Galactic bulge/bar region with APOGEE DR16 and {\it Gaia} DR2, focusing in particular on the possible high-velocity (HV) peaks and their physical origin. We fit the velocity distributions with two different models, namely with Gauss-Hermite polynomial and Gaussian mixture model (GMM). The result of the fit using Gauss-Hermite polynomials reveals a positive correlation between the mean velocity ($\bar{V}$) and the "skewness" ($h_{3}$) of the velocity distribution, possibly caused by the Galactic bar. The $n=2$ GMM fitting reveals a symmetric l…
Cluster Ages to Reconstruct the Milky Way Assembly (CARMA) IV. Chrono-dynamics of seven old star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the peculiar origin of NGC 1841
The mass of a star is arguably its most fundamental parameter. For red giant stars, tracers luminous enough to be observed across the Galaxy, mass implies a stellar evolution age. It has proven to be extremely difficult to infer ages and masses directly from red giant spectra using existing methods. From the KEPLER and APOGEE surveys, samples of several thousand stars exist with high-quality spectra and asteroseismic masses. Here we show that from these data we can build a data-driven spectral model using The Cannon, which can determine stellar masses to $\sim$ 0.07 dex from APOGEE DR12 spectr…
The kinematics of the Milky Way disc as a function of age are well measured at the solar radius, but have not been studied over a wider range of Galactocentric radii. Here, we measure the kinematics of mono-age, mono-$\mathrm{[Fe/H]}$ populations in the low and high $\mathrm{[α/Fe]}$ discs between $4 \lesssim R \lesssim 13$ kpc and $|z| \lesssim 2$ kpc using 65,719 stars in common between APOGEE DR14 and $\it{Gaia}$ DR2 for which we estimate ages using a Bayesian neural network model trained on asteroseismic ages. We determine the vertical and radial velocity dispersions, finding that the low …
We present flux-calibrated integrated spectra in the optical range (3700-6800 Å) obtained at Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO, Argentina) for a sample of 10 concentrated star clusters belonging to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). No previous data exist for two of these objects (SL 142 and SL 624), while most of the remaining clusters have been only poorly studied. We derive simultaneously foreground $E(B-V)$ reddening values and ages for the cluster sample by comparing their integrated spectra with template LMC cluster spectra and with two different sets of simple stellar population m…
We compare the observed bivariate distribution of masses(M) and ages(t) of star clusters in the LMC with the predicted distributions g(M,t) from 3 idealized models for the disruption of star clusters: (1)sudden mass-dependent disruption;(2)gradual mass-dependent disruption; and (3)gradual mass-independent disruption. The model with mass-{\em in}dependent disruption provides a good, first-order description of these cluster populations, with g(M,t) propto M^{beta} t^{gamma}, beta=-1.8+/-0.2 and gamma=-0.8+/-0.2, at least for clusters with ages t<10^9 yr and masses M<10^3 M_sol (more specifically…
We present CMDs in the V and I bands for fifteen star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on data taken with the Very Large Telescope (VLT, Chile). We selected these clusters from our previous work, wherein we derived cluster radial velocities and metallicities from Calcium II infrared triplet (CaT) spectra also taken with the VLT. We discovered that the ages of six of our clusters have been appreciably underestimated by previous studies, which used comparatively small telescopes, graphically illustrating the need for large apertures to obtain reliable ages of old and intermedia…
Machine learning allows efficient extraction of physical properties from stellar spectra that have been obtained by large surveys. The viability of ML approaches has been demonstrated for spectra covering a variety of wavelengths and spectral resolutions, but most often for main sequence or evolved stars, where reliable synthetic spectra provide labels and data for training. Spectral models of young stellar objects (YSOs) and low mass main sequence (MS) stars are less well-matched to their empirical counterparts, however, posing barriers to previous approaches to classify spectra of such stars…
