Neutrinos as almost massless particles could mediate long-range forces, known as neutrino forces. In this talk, I will introduce some theoretical aspects of neutrino forces, including why the potential of a neutrino force has the $1/r^{5}$ form and how it may vary under different circumstances. Experimental probes and possible implications for cosmology are also briefly discussed.
Recent results from neutrino experiments show evidence for light sterile neutrinos which do not have any Standard Model interactions. In this work we study the hidden interaction of sterile neutrinos with an "MeV scale" gauge boson (the $ν_s$HI model) with mass $M_X$ and leptonic coupling $g^\prime_l$. By performing an analysis on the $ν_s$HI model using the data of the MINOS neutrino experiment we find that the values above $G_X/G_F=92.4$ are excluded by more than $2σ$ C.L., where $G_F$ is the Fermi constant and $G_X$ is the field strength of the $ν_s$HI model. Using this model we can also pr…
Sterile neutrinos at the eV scale have long been studied in the context of anomalies in short baseline neutrino experiments. Their cosmology can be made compatible with our understanding of the early Universe provided the sterile neutrino sector enjoys a nontrivial dynamics with exotic interactions, possibly providing a link to the Dark Matter (DM) puzzle. Interactions between DM and neutrinos have also been proposed to address the long-standing "missing satellites" problem in the field of large scale structure formation. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper we discuss realistic sc…
The mediators of neutrino mass generation can provide a probe of neutrino properties at the next round of high-energy hadron (FCC-hh) and lepton colliders (FCC-ee/ILC/CEPC/CLIC). We show how the decays of the Higgs triplet scalars mediating the simplest seesaw mechanism can shed light on the neutrino mass scale and mass-ordering, as well as the atmospheric octant. Four-lepton signatures at the high-energy frontier may provide the discovery-site for charged lepton flavour non-conservation in nature, rather than low-energy intensity frontier experiments.
We consider a fifth force to be an interaction that couples to matter with a strength that grows with the number of atoms. In addition to competing with the strength of gravity a fifth force can give rise to violations of the equivalence principle. Current long range constraints on the strength and range of fifth forces are very impressive. Amongst possible fifth forces are those that couple to lepton flavorful charges $L_e-L_μ$ or $L_e-L_τ$. They have the property that their range and strength are also constrained by neutrino interactions with matter. In this brief note we review the existing…
We discuss the possibility to distinguish between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in the context of the minimal gauge theory for neutrino masses, the B-L gauge extension of the Standard Model. We revisit the possibility to observe lepton number violation at the Large Hadron Collider and point out the importance of the decays of the new gauge boson to discriminate between the existence of Dirac or Majorana neutrinos.
We consider a class of models involving interactions between ultra-light scalar dark matter and Standard Model neutrinos. Such couplings modify the neutrino mass splittings and mixing angles to include additional components that vary in time periodically with a frequency and amplitude set by the mass and energy density of the dark matter. Null results from recent searches for anomalous periodicities in the solar neutrino flux strongly constrain the dark matter-neutrino coupling to be orders of magnitude below current and projected limits derived from observations of the cosmic microwave backgr…
We review probes of heavy sterile neutrinos, focusing on direct experimental searches and neutrinoless double beta decay. Working in a phenomenological parametrization, we emphasize the importance of the nature of sterile neutrinos in interpreting neutrinoless double beta decay searches. While current constraints on the active-sterile neutrino mixing are already stringent, we highlight planned future efforts that will probe regimes motivated by the lightness of active neutrinos.
A laboratory detection of a sterile neutrino could provide the first indication of the evolution of the Universe before Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), an epoch yet untested. Such "visible" sterile neutrinos are observable in upcoming experiments such as KATRIN/TRISTAN and HUNTER in the keV mass range and PTOLEMY and others in the eV mass range. A set of standard assumptions is typically made about cosmology before the temperature of the Universe was 5 MeV. However, non-standard pre-BBN cosmologies based on alternative assumptions could arise in motivated theoretical models and are equally in …
We examine the commonly explored beyond-standard-model physics scenario of secret neutrino forces, and point out a model prediction that appears to have been overlooked: the generation of unique flavor-changing effects in experiments featuring decay-at-rest (DAR) neutrino sources. These flavor changes occur because the decay that drives neutrino and antineutrino production, $μ^{+}\rightarrow e^+ +\barν_μ+ν_{e}$, is unique in producing two neutrinos in the final state. Any non-flavor-universal force between the emerging neutrinos would thus induce a new oscillation phase as they escape from eac…
Right-handed (RH) Majorana neutrinos play a crucial role in understanding the origin of neutrino mass, the nature of dark matter and the mechanism of matter-antimatter asymmetry. In this work, we investigate the observability of heavy Majorana neutrino through the top quark neutrinoless double beta decay process $t \to b \ell^+ \ell^+ j j$ at hadron colliders. By performing detector level simulation, we demonstrate that our method can give stronger limits on the light-heavy neutrino mixing parameters $|V_{eN, μN}|$ in the mass range of 15 GeV $< m_N <$ 80 GeV than other existing collider bound…

In light of the exciting campaign of cosmogenic neutrino detection, we investigate the double and multiple tau bangs detectable at future tau neutrino telescopes. Such events are expected from the Standard Model (SM) higher-order processes, which can be easily identified with broad techniques anticipated at future tau neutrino telescopes. We find that SM perturbative processes can already contribute observable double-bang events to telescopes with a sensitivity of collecting $\mathcal{O}(100)$ cosmogenic neutrino events. The detectable but suppressed rate in fact makes the double and multiple …
We propose a new way to probe non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino data at current and future neutrino telescopes. We consider the Zee model of radiative neutrino mass generation as a prototype, which allows two charged scalars -- one $SU(2)_L$-doublet and one singlet, both being leptophilic, to be as light as 100 GeV, thereby inducing potentially observable NSI with electrons. We show that these light charged Zee-scalars could give rise to a Glashow-like resonance feature in the UHE neutrino event spectrum at the IceCube neutrino …
The relic neutrinos from old supernova explosions are among the most ancient neutrino fluxes within experimental reach. Thus, the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) could teach us if neutrino masses were different in the past (redshifts $z\lesssim 5$). Oscillations inside the supernova depend strongly on the neutrino mass-squared differences and the values of the mixing angles, rendering the DSNB energy spectrum sensitive to variations of these parameters. Considering a purely phenomenological parameterization of the neutrino masses as a function of redshift, we compute the expected …
The Sommerfeld enhancement plays an important role in dark matter (DM) physics, and can significantly enhance the annihilation cross section of non-relativistic DM particles. In this paper, we study the effect of neutrino forces, which are generated by the exchange of a pair of light neutrinos, on the Sommerfeld enhancement. We demonstrate that in certain cases, a neutrino force can cause a significant correction to the Sommerfeld enhancement. Models that can realise DM-neutrino interactions and sizeable Sommerfeld enhancement are also briefly discussed, together with the impacts on DM phenome…
We examine the current constraints and future sensitivity of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$ν$NS) experiments to mixing scenarios involving a $Z^\prime$ which interacts via portals with the Standard Model. We contrast the results against those from fixed target, atomic parity violation, and solar neutrino experiments. We demonstrate a significant dependence of the experimental reach on the $Z'$ coupling non-universality and the complementarity of CE$ν$NS to existing searches.
The 2-neutrino exchange potential is a Standard Model weak potential arising from the exchange of virtual neutrino-antineutrino pairs which must include all neutrino properties, including the number of flavors, their masses, fermionic nature (Dirac or Majorana), and CP violation. We describe a new approach for calculating the spin-independent 2-neutrino exchange potential, including the mixing of three neutrino mass states and CP violation.
We investigate the reach at the LHC to probe light sterile neutrinos with displaced vertices. We focus on sterile neutrinos $N$ with masses $m_{N} \sim $ (5-30) GeV, that are produced in rare decays of the Standard Model gauge bosons and decay inside the inner trackers of the LHC detectors. With a strategy that triggers on the prompt lepton accompanying the $N$ displaced vertex and considers charged tracks associated to it, we show that the 13 TeV LHC with $3000$/fb is able to probe active-sterile neutrino mixings down to $|V_{lN}|^2\approx 10^{-9}$, with $l=e,μ$, which is an improvement of up…
We point out a novel role for the Standard Model neutrino in dark matter phenomenology where the exchange of neutrinos generates a long-range potential between dark matter particles. The resulting dark matter self interaction could be sufficiently strong to impact small-scale structure formation, without the need of any dark force carrier. This is a generic feature of theories where dark matter couples to the visible sector through the neutrino portal. It is highly testable with improved decay rate measurements at future $Z$, Higgs, and $τ$ factories, as well as precision cosmology.
Sterile neutrinos with keV-MeV masses and non-zero transition magnetic moments can be probed through low-energy nuclear or electron recoil measurements. Here we determine the sensitivities of current and future searches, showing how they can probe a previously unexplored parameter region. Future coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) or elastic neutrino-electron scattering (E$ν$ES) experiments using a monochromatic $^{51}$Cr source can fully probe the region indicated by the recent XENON1T excess.
In the low energy effective theory of the weak interaction, a macroscopic force arises when pairs of neutrinos are exchanged. We calculate the neutrino Casimir force between plates, allowing for two different mass eigenstates within the loop. We also provide the general potential between point sources. We discuss the possibility of distinguishing whether neutrinos are Majorana or Dirac fermions using these quantum forces.
Physics beyond the Standard Model can manifest itself as both new light states and heavy degrees of freedom. In this paper, we assume that the former comprise only a sterile neutrino, $N$. Therefore, the most agnostic description of the new physics is given by an effective field theory built upon the Standard Model fields as well as $N$. We show that Higgs phenomenology provides a sensitive and potentially crucial tool to constrain effective gauge interactions of sterile neutrinos, not yet probed by current experiments. In parallel, this motivates a range of new Higgs decay channels with clean…
Astrophysical searches for new long-range interactions complement collider searches for new short-range interactions. Conveniently, neutrino flavor oscillations are keenly sensitive to the existence of long-ranged flavored interactions between neutrinos and electrons, motivated by lepton-number symmetries of the Standard Model. For the first time, we probe them using TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrinos and accounting for all large electron repositories in the local and distant Universe. The high energies and colossal number of electrons grant us unprecedented sensitivity to the new interaction, ev…
Multiple astrophysical probes of the cosmic star formation history yield widely different inferences of this rate at redshifts z > 1. While all probes seem to indicate a period of peak star formation known as the cosmic noon between 1.5 < z < 3, the detailed inferences from these probes are in disagreement. In particular, the magnitude of the peak star formation rate density indicated by H-alpha data is higher by a factor of ~ 4 compared to the magnitude of the peak indicated by UV/IR data. In this work, we explore the potential of future measurements of the diffuse supernova neutrino backgrou…
Characteristic patterns of cosmic neutrino spectrum reported by the IceCube collaboration and long-standing inconsistency between theory and experiment in muon anomalous magnetic moment are simultaneously explained by an extra leptonic force mediated by a gauge field with a mass of the MeV scale. With different assumptions for redshift distribution of cosmic neutrino sources, diffuse neutrino flux is calculated with the scattering between cosmic neutrino and cosmic neutrino background through the new leptonic force. Our analysis sheds light on a relation among lepton physics at the three diffe…
