Understanding the spatio-temporal evolution of thermal gradient (G) at and velocity (R) of the solid-liquid and liquid-vapor interfaces is critical for the control of site-specific microstructures in additive manufacturing. In-situ dynamic x-ray radiography (DXR) has been used in recent years to probe the evolution of R with high spatial and temporal resolutions. However, the current methods used to measure the temperature (and therefore, G) are inadequate for sub-melt-pool surface measurement (e.g. thermography) or have lower resolution or limited field-of-view (e.g. x-ray diffraction). In this study, we demonstrate a novel approach to estimate the sub-surface temperature distribution and its time evolution with significantly higher resolutions using DXR data. This methodology uses the Beer-Lambert's law as a physical basis and is demonstrated using an in-situ laser spot-melting experiment on Ti-6Al-4V alloy.
This paper investigates the behaviour of colloidal suspensions of alumina particles during directional solidification, by in situ high-resolution observations using X-ray radiography and tomography. This second part is focussed on the evolution of ice crystals during steady state growth (in terms of interface velocity) and on the particles redistribution taking place in this regime. In particular, it is shown that diffusion cannot determine the concentration profile and the particles redistribution in this regime of interface velocities (20-40 microns/s); constitutional supercooling arguments …
This paper investigates by in situ high-resolution X-ray radiography and tomography the behaviour of colloidal suspensions of alumina particles during directional solidification by freezing. The combination of these techniques provided both qualitative and quantitative information about the propagation kinetic of the solid/liquid interface, the particles redistribution between the crystals and a particle enriched phase and the 3D organisation of the ice crystals. In this first part of two companion papers, the precursor phenomena leading to directional crystallisation during the first instants…
Ice templating of colloidal suspension is gaining interest in material science because it offers the possibility to shape advanced materials, and in particular porous ceramics. Recent investigations on this peculiar process show that a correlation between the morphology of the frozen suspension and the velocity of the freezing front do exist. The dynamics of the freezing front of a colloidal suspension of alumina is investigated in the present study by experimental tests, finite element numerical analysis and theoretical analytical calculations. The experimental tests are carried out by in sit…
A simple method for detection of melting event in laser-heated diamond anvil cells (DACs) is introduced. The melting is registered optically by the formation of spherical drops of the investigated material as heated in an inert pressure transmitting medium. Feasibility of the method is demonstrated on the examples of metal (iron and gold) and iron oxide (Fe2O3), materials molten at pressures over 40 GPa employing a portable laser heating system.
Combining Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction, Mechanistic Modeling, and Machine Learning for In Situ Subsurface Temperature Quantification during Laser Melting
Melting experiments require rapid data acquisition due to instabilities of the molten sample and optical drifting due to the high required laser power. In this work, the melting curve of zirconium has been determined for the first time up to 80 GPa and 4000 K using in-situ fast x-ray diffraction (XRD) in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LH-DAC). The main method used for melt detection was the direct observance of liquid diffuse scattering (LDS) in the XRD patterns and it has been proven to be a reliable melting diagnostic. The effectiveness of other melting criteria such as the appearance te…
Connecting a bulk material's microscopic defects to its macroscopic properties is an age-old problem in materials science. Long-range interactions between dislocations (line defects) are known to play a key role in how materials deform or melt, but we lack the tools to connect these dynamics to the macroscopic properties. We introduce time-resolved dark-field X-ray microscopy to directly visualize how dislocations move and interact over hundreds of micrometers, deep inside bulk aluminum. With real-time movies, we reveal the thermally-activated motion and interactions of dislocations that compr…
A metastable austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni steel was processed by selective laser melting with low power, resulting in nearly random crystallographic texture. In-situ tensile loading and neutron diffraction experiments were undertaken and the results indicate high ductility, despite the presence of porosity, and pronounced strain-induced martensitic transformation. A secondary hardening is observed in the mechanical data due to the martensite carrying significant load, upon its formation. The pronounced martensitic transformation is discussed with respect to the initial and the evolving deformation text…
Melting of orthorhombic boron silicide B6Si has been studied at pressures up to 8 GPa using in situ electrical resistivity measurements and quenching. It has been found that in the 2.6-7.7 GPa range B6Si melts congruently, and the melting curve exhibits negative slope of -31(2) K/GPa that points to a higher density of the melt as compared to the solid phase. At very high temperatures B6Si melt appears to be unstable and undergoes disproportionation into silicon and boron-rich silicides. The onset temperature of disproportionation strongly depends on pressure, and the corresponding low-temperat…
The thermal properties are one of the key parameters to control phase purity and microstructure of polycrystalline materials. The melting point of the iron-based BaFe2As2 superconductor (Ba122), which foresees high-field applications, remains controversial. In this work, thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry measurements (TG-DSC) of undoped and Co-doped Ba122 were carried out. Mixtures of elemental metals and pre-reacted Ba122 powders were prepared to investigate the thermal responses during in situ and ex situ synthesis routes, respectively. In addition, the phases and microstruc…
The p-V-T equation of state of magnesium metal has been measured up to 20 GPa and 1500 K using both multianvil and opposite anvil techniques combined with synchrotron X-ray diffraction. To fit the experimental data, the model of Anderson-Grüneisen has been used with fixed parameter δT. The 300-K bulk modulus of B0 = 32.5(1) GPa and its first pressure derivative, B0' = 3.73(2), have been obtained by fitting available data up to 20 GPa to Murnaghan equation of state. Thermal expansion at ambient pressure has been described using second order polynomial with coefficients a = 25(2)x10-6 K-1 and b …
Metal--organic frameworks (MOFs) are a family of chemically diverse materials, with applications in a wide range of fields covering engineering, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. Research so far has focused almost entirely on crystalline structures, yet a clear trend has emerged shifting the emphasis onto disordered states of MOFs, including "defective by design" crystals, as well as amorphous phases such as glasses and gels. Here we introduce a MOF liquid, a strongly associated liquid obtained by melting a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), with retention of chemical configuration,…

The size and shape of the primary dendrite tips determine the principal length scale of the microstructure evolving during solidification of alloys. In-situ X-ray measurements of the tip shape in metals have been unsuccessful so far due to insufficient spatial resolution or high image noise. To overcome these limitations, high-resolution synchrotron radiography and advanced image processing techniques are applied to a thin sample of a solidifying Ga-35wt.%In alloy. Quantitative in-situ measurements are performed of the growth of dendrite tips during the fast initial transient and the subsequen…
We report on how different cluster deposition regimes can be obtained and observed by in situ Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) by exploiting deposition parameters in a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) process. Tungsten clusters were produced by nanosecond Pulsed Laser Ablation in Ar atmosphere at different pressures and deposited on Au(111) and HOPG surfaces. Deposition regimes including cluster deposition-diffusion-aggregation (DDA), cluster melting and coalescence and cluster implantation were observed, depending on background gas pressure and target-to-substrate distance which influence the…
Phase relations in the B-BN system have been studied ex situ and in situ at pressures 2-20 GPa and temperatures up to 2800 K. The evolution of topology of the B-BN phase diagram has been investigated up to 24 GPa using models of phenomenological thermodynamics with interaction parameters derived from our experimental data on phase equilibria at high pressures and high temperatures. There are two thermodynamically stable boron subnitrides in the system i.e. B13N2 and B50N2. Above 16.5 GPa the B50N2 = L + B13N2 peritectic reaction transforms to the solid-phase reaction of B50N2 decomposition int…
The decomposition and the reformation of the (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d (?Bi,Pb(2223)?) phase have been investigated in-situ by means of High-Temperature Neutron Diffraction, both in sintered bulk samples and in Ag-sheathed monofilamentary tapes. Several decomposition experiments were performed at various temperatures and under various annealing atmospheres, under flowing gas as well as in sealed tubes, in order to study the appropriate conditions for Bi,Pb(2223) formation from the melt. The Bi,Pb(2223) phase was found to melt incongruently into (Ca,Sr)2CuO3, (Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41 and a Pb,Bi-rich liqu…

Understanding the covalent clathrate formation is a crucial point for the design of new superhard materials with intrinsic coupling of superhardness and metallic conductivity. Silicon clathrates have the archetype structures that can serve an existant model compounds for superhard clathrate frameworks "Si-B", "Si-C", "B-C" and "C" with intercalated atoms (e.g. alkali metals or even halogenes) that can assure the metalic properties. Here we report the in situ and ex situ studies of high-pressure formation and stability of clathrates Na8Si46 (structure I) and Na24+xSi136 (structure II). Experime…
We present results of temperature resolved scattering studies of a liquid crystalline block copolymer undergoing an order-disorder transition (ODT) in the presence of magnetic fields and time-resolved measurements during isothermal field annealing at sub-ODT temperatures. In each case, field interactions produced strongly textured mesophases with the cylindrical microdomains aligned parallel to the field. We find there is no measurable field-induced shift in the ODT temperature ($T_{ODT}$) which suggests that selective melting does not play a role in mesophase alignment during isothermal exper…

The plastic response of beryllium was investigated during loading by laser-induced shock waves, using surface velocimetry and in-situ x-ray diffraction. Results from loading by thermal x-rays (hohlraum) were consistent with more extensive studies using laser ablation. Strong elastic waves were observed, up to ~1 km/s in free surface speed, with significant structure before the arrival of the plastic shock. The magnitude and shape of the precursor could be reproduced with a plasticity model based on dislocation dynamics. Changes in lattice spacing measured from the x-ray diffraction pattern gav…

The existence of a 'crossover region' in glass-forming liquids has long been considered as a general phenomenon that is as important as the glass transition. One potential origin for the crossover behavior is a liquid-to-liquid phase transition (LLPT). Although a LLPT is thought to exist in all forms of liquids, structural evidence for this, particularly in supercooled liquids, is scarce, elusive, and in many cases controversial. A key challenge to the search for a LLPT in a supercooled liquid is the interference of crystallization during cooling. Crystallization induces major structural chang…
