In this paper, we study the overdetermined problem for the $p$-Laplacian equation on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove that the regularity results of weak solutions of the $p$-Laplacian equation and obtain some integral identities. As their applications, we give the proof of the $p$-Laplacian overdetermined problem and obtain some well known results such as the Heintze-Karcher inequality and the Soap Bubble Theorem.
We extend the symmetry result of Serrin and Weinberger from the Laplacian operator to the highly degenerate game-theoretic $p$-Laplacian operator and show that viscosity solutions of $-Δ_p^Nu=1$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ and $\tfrac{\partial u}{\partialν}=-c\neq 0$ on $\partialΩ$ can only exist on a bounded domain $Ω$ if $Ω$ is a ball.
Our work proposes a unified approach to three different topics in a general Riemannian setting: splitting theorems, symmetry results and overdetermined elliptic problems. By the existence of a stable solution to the semilinear equation $-Δu = f(u)$ on a Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, we are able to classify both the solution and the manifold. We also discuss the classification of monotone (with respect to the direction of some Killing vector field) solutions, in the spirit of a conjecture of De Giorgi, and the rigidity features for overdetermined elliptic problems on su…
We consider the $p$-Laplacian equation $-Δ_p u=1$ for $1<p<2$, on a regular bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^N$, with $N\ge2$, under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the spirit of Alexandrov's Soap Bubble Theorem and of Serrin's symmetry result for the overdetermined problems, we prove that if the mean curvature $H$ of $\partialΩ$ is constant, then $Ω$ is a ball and the unique solution of the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian problem is radial. The main tools used are integral identities, the $P$-function, and the maximum principle.
We consider a partially overdetermined problem for anisotropic $N$-Laplace equations in a convex cone $Σ$ intersected with the exterior of a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 2$. Under a prescribed logarithmic condition at infinity, we prove a rigidity result by showing that the existence of a solution implies that $Σ\capΩ$ must be the intersection of the Wulff shape and $Σ$. Our approach is based on a Pohozaev-type identity and the characterization of minimizers of the anisotropic isoperimetric inequality inside convex cones.
We consider a fractional elliptic equation in an unbounded set with both Dirichlet and fractional normal derivative datum prescribed. We prove that the domain and the solution are necessarily radially symmetric. The extension of the result in bounded non-convex regions is also studied, as well as the radial symmetry of the solution when the set is a priori supposed to be rotationally symmetric.
The main purpose of this paper is to address two open questions raised by W. Reichel on characterizations of balls in terms of the Riesz potential and fractional Laplacian. For a bounded $C^1$ domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N$, we consider the Riesz-potential $$u(x)=\int_Ω\frac{1}{|x-y|^{N-α}} \,dy$$ for $2\leq α\not =N$. We show that $u=$ constant on the boundary of $Ω$ if and only if $Ω$ is a ball. In the case of $ α=N$, the similar characterization is established for the logarithmic potential. We also prove that such a characterization holds for the logarithmic Riesz potential. This provides a …
We consider overdetermined boundary value problems for the $\infty$-Laplacian in a domain $Ω$ of $\R^n$ and discuss what kind of implications on the geometry of $Ω$ the existence of a solution may have. The classical $\infty$-Laplacian, the normalized or game-theoretic $\infty$-Laplacian and the limit of the $p$-Laplacian as $p\to \infty$ are considered and provide different answers.
We prove a rigidity result for the anisotropic Laplacian. More precisely, the domain of the problem is bounded by an unknown surface supporting a Dirichlet condition together with a Neumann-type condition which is not translation-invariant. Using a comparison argument, we show that the domain is in fact a Wulff shape. We also consider the more general case when the unknown surface is required to have its boundary on a given conical surface: in such a case, the domain of the problem is bounded by the unknown surface and by a portion of the given conical surface, which supports a homogeneous Neu…
We show that a wide range of overdetermined boundary problems for semilinear equations with position-dependent nonlinearities admits nontrivial solutions. The result holds true both on the Euclidean space and on compact Riemannian manifolds. As a byproduct of the proofs we also obtain some rigidity, or partial symmetry, results for solutions to overdetermined problems on Riemannian manifolds of nonconstant curvature.
We consider an overdetermined problem for the Finsler Laplacian in the exterior of a convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, establishing a symmetry result for the anisotropic capacitary potential. Our result extends the one of W. Reichel [Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 137 (1997)], where the usual Newtonian capacity is considered, giving rise to an overdetermined problem for the standard Laplace equation. Here, we replace the usual Euclidean norm of the gradient with an arbitrary norm $H$. The resulting symmetry of the solution is that of the so-called Wulff shape (a ball in the dual norm $H_0$).
We consider an overdetermined fourth order boundary value problem in which the boundary value of the Laplacian of the solution is prescribed, in addition to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. It is known that, in the case where the prescribed boundary value is a constant, this overdetermined problem has a solution if and only if the domain under consideration is a ball. In this paper, we study the shape of a domain admitting a solution to the overdetermined problem when the prescribed boundary value is slightly perturbed from a constant. We derive an integral identity for the fourth…
Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold with a distinguished point $O$ and assume that the geodesic distance $d$ from $O$ is an isoparametric function. Let $Ω\subset M$ be a bounded domain, with $O \in Ω$, and consider the problem $Δ_p u = -1$ in $Ω$ with $u=0$ on $\partial Ω$, where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian of $g$. We prove that if the normal derivative $\partial_νu$ of $u$ along the boundary of $Ω$ is a function of $d$ satisfying suitable conditions, then $Ω$ must be a geodesic ball. In particular, our result applies to open balls of $\mathbb{R}^n$ equipped with a rotationally symmetric metri…
This is an expanded version of a series of two lectures given at the IMA summer program "Symmetries and Overdetermined Systems of Partial Differential Equations". The main part of the article describes the Riemannian version of the prolongation procedure for certain overdetermined system obtained recently in joint work with T.P. Branson, M.G. Eastwood, and A.R. Gover. First a simple special case is discussed, then the (Riemannian) procedure is described in general. The prolongation procedure was derived from a simplification of the construction of Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) sequences of i…
We deal with eigenvalue problems for the Laplacian on noncompact Riemannian manifolds $M$ of finite volume. Sharp conditions ensuring $L^q(M)$ and $L^\infty (M)$ bounds for eigenfunctions are exhibited in terms of either the isoperimetric function or the isocapacitary function of $M$.
We study viscosity solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic equations of $p$-Laplacian type on Riemannian manifolds. The Krylov-Safonov type Harnack inequality for the $p$-Laplacian operators with $1<p<\infty$ is established on the manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below based on ABP type estimates. We also prove the Harnack inequality for nonlinear $p$-Laplacian type operators assuming that a nonlinear perturbation of Ricci curvature is bounded below.
In this paper, we deal with a singular quasilinear critical elliptic equation of Lichnerowicz type involving the p-Laplacian operator. With the help of the subcritical approach from variational method, we obtain the non-existence, existence, and multiplicity results under some given assumptions.
The present paper is devoted to geometric optimization problems related to the Neumann eigenvalue problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on bounded subdomains $Ω$ of a Riemannian manifold $(\mathcal{M},g)$. More precisely, we analyze locally extremal domains for the first nontrivial eigenvalue $μ_2(Ω)$ with respect to volume preserving domain perturbations, and we show that corresponding notions of criticality arise in the form of overdetermined boundary problems. Our results rely on an extension of Zanger's shape derivative formula which covers the case when $μ_2(Ω)$ is not a simple eigenv…
We obtain a criterion for the existence of solutions of the problem $$ Δ_p u = 0 \quad \mbox{in } M \setminus \partial M, \quad \left. u \right|_{ \partial M } = h, $$ with the bounded Dirichlet integral, where $M$ is an oriented complete Riemannian manifold with boundary and $h \in W_{p, loc}^1 (M)$, $p > 1$.
Following \cite{B2}, we introduce a notion of para-products associated to a semi-group. We do not use Fourier transform arguments and the background manifold is doubling, endowed with a sub-laplacian structure. Our main result is a paralinearization theorem in a non-euclidean framework, with an application to the propagation of regularity for some nonlinear PDEs.
In this paper, we investigate the existence and uniqueness of a non-trivial solution for a class of nonlocal equations involving the fractional $p$-Laplacian operator defined on compact Riemannian manifold, namely, \begin{eqnarray}\label{k1} \begin{gathered} \left\{\begin{array}{lll} (-Δ_g)^s_p u(x)+ \left| u \right|^{p-2} u= f(x,u) & \text { in }& Ω, \hspace{3,4cm} u=0 & \text{in }& M\setminusΩ, \end{array}\right. \end{gathered} \end{eqnarray} and $Ω$ is an open bounded subset of M with a smooth boundary.
We give a complete characterization, as "stadium-like domains", of convex subsets $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ where a solution exists to Serrin-type overdetermined boundary value problems in which the operator is either the infinity Laplacian or its normalized version. In case of the not-normalized operator, our results extend those obtained in a previous work, where the problem was solved under some geometrical restrictions on $Ω$. In case of the normalized operator, we also show that stadium-like domains are precisely the unique convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ where the solution to a Dirichlet probl…
We obtain necessary and sufficient existence conditions for solutions of the boundary value problem $$ Δ_p u = f \quad \mbox{on } M, \quad \left. \left| \nabla u \right|^{p - 2} \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν} \right|_{ \partial M } = h, $$ where $p > 1$ is a real number, $M$ is a connected oriented complete Riemannian manifold with boundary, and $ν$ is the external normal vector to $\partial M$.
We define the notion of an exceptional manifold to be a flat Riemannian manifold with boundary which supports a positive harmonic function satisfying simultaneously a zero Dirichlet condition and a constant (nonzero) Neumann condtion at the boundary. We study the two-dimensional case: we present various examples and give a general construction algorithm of such surface by using complex analysis. We deduce a classification of all such surfaces assuming some further natural hypotheses and prove a Bernstein type theorem.
We prove the existence of a countable family of Delaunay type domains Ω_j in M^n x R, where M^n is the Riemannian manifold S^n or H^n and n is at least 2, bifurcating from the cylinder B^n x R (where B^n is a geodesic ball of radius 1 in M^n) for which the first eigenfunction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator with zero Dirichlet boundary condition also has constant Neumann data at the boundary. The domains Ω_j are rotationally symmetric and periodic with respect to the R-axis of the cylinder and as j converges to 0 the domain Ω_j converges to the cylinder B^n x R.
We consider the first eigenvalue $λ_1(Ω,σ)$ of the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions on a compact Riemannian manifold $Ω$ with smooth boundary, $σ\in\bf R$ being the Robin boundary parameter. When $σ>0$ we give a positive, sharp lower bound of $λ_1(Ω,σ)$ in terms of an associated one-dimensional problem depending on the geometry through a lower bound of the Ricci curvature of $Ω$, a lower bound of the mean curvature of $\partialΩ$ and the inradius. When the boundary parameter is negative, the lower bound becomes an upper bound. In particular, explicit bounds for mean-convex Euclidean do…
We develop a variational theory of geodesics for the canonical variation of the metric of a totally geodesic foliation. As a consequence, we obtain comparison theorems for the horizontal and vertical Laplacians. In the case of Sasakian foliations, we show that sharp horizontal and vertical comparison theorems for the sub-Riemannian distance may be obtained as a limit of horizontal and vertical comparison theorems for the Riemannian distances approximations.
In this paper we provide a new method for establishing the rotational symmetry of the solutions to a couple of very classical overdetermined problems arising in potential theory, in both the exterior and the interior punctured domain. Thanks to a conformal reformulation of the problems, we obtain Riemannian manifolds with zero Weyl tensor satisfying a quasi-Einstein type equation. Exploiting these geometric properties, we conclude via a splitting argument that the manifolds obtained are half cylinders. In turn, the rotational symmetry of the potential is implied. To the authors' knowledge, som…
These notes are the basis of a course given at the Institut Henri Poincare in September 2014. We survey some recent results related to the geometric analysis of hypoelliptic diffusion operators on totally geodesic Riemannian foliations. We also give new applications to the study of hypocoercive estimates for Kolmogorov type operators.
We prove global comparison results for the $p$-Laplacian on a $p$-parabolic manifold. These involve both real-valued and vector-valued maps with finite $p$-energy.
The Ray-Singer analytic torsion is the zeta-function trace of a certain sum of logarithm operators on the de Rham complex. In this note we examine the residue analytic torsion, defined using the residue-trace instead of the spectral zeta function quasi-trace.
We compute the Green's function for the Hodge Laplacian on the symmetric spaces M\timesΣ, where M is a simply connected n-dimensional Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold of constant curvature and Σis a simply connected Riemannian surface of constant curvature. Our approach is based on a generalization to the case of differential forms of the method of spherical means and on the use of Riesz distributions on manifolds. The radial part of the Green's function is governed by a fourth order analogue of the Heun equation.
The aim of this paper is give a simple proof of some results in \cite{Jun Ling-2006-IJM} and \cite{JunLing-2007-AGAG}, which are very deep studies in the sharp lower bound of the first eigenvalue in the Laplacian operator on compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also get a result about lower bound of the first Neumann eigenvalue in a special case. Indeed, our estimate of lower bound in the this case is optimal. Although the methods used in here due to \cite{Jun Ling-2006-IJM} (or \cite{JunLing-2007-AGAG}) on the whole, to some extent we can tackle the singularity of…
