We investigate a nonlinear parabolic reaction-diffusion equation describing the oxygen concentration in encapsulated pancreatic cells with a general core-shell geometry. This geometry introduces a discontinuous diffusion coefficient as the material properties of the core and shell differ. We apply monotone operator theory to show well-posedness of the problem in the strong form. Furthermore, the stationary solutions are unique and asymptotically stable. These results rely on the gradient structure of the underlying PDE.
A general system of several ordinary differential equations coupled with a reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded domain with zero-flux boundary condition is studied in the context of pattern formation. These initial-boundary value problems may have regular (i.e. sufficiently smooth) stationary solutions. This class of {\it close-to-equilibrium} patterns includes stationary solutions that emerge due to the Turing instability of a spatially constant stationary solution. The main result of this work is instability of all regular patterns. It suggests that stable stationary solutions arising in…
Systems consisting of a single ordinary differential equation coupled with one reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded domain and with the Neumann boundary conditions are studied in the case of particular nonlinearities from the Brusselator model, the Gray-Scott model, the Oregonator model and a certain predator-prey model. It is shown that the considered systems have the both smooth and discontinuous stationary solutions, however, only discontinuous ones can be stable.
We deal with a mass-conserved three-component reaction-diffusion system which is proposed by a model describing the dynamics of wavelike actin polymerization in the macropinocytosis and numerically exhibits dynamical patterns such as annihilation, crossover, and nucleation of pulses (Yochelis-Beta-Giv 2020). In this article we first establish the condition for the diffusion driven instability in the system. Then we rigorously prove the existence of spiky stationary solutions to the system in a bounded interval with the Neumann condition. By numerics these solutions play a crucial role in the n…
We consider a $n \times n$ nonlinear reaction-diffusion system posed on a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$. This system models reversible chemical reactions. We act on the system through $m$ controls ($1 \leq m < n$), localized in some arbitrary nonempty open subset $ω$ of the domain $Ω$. We prove the local exact controllability to nonnegative (constant) stationary states in any time $T >0$. A specificity of this control system is the existence of some invariant quantities in the nonlinear dynamics that prevents controllability from happening in the whole space $L^\infty(Ω)^n$. The …
We consider a two-phase heat conductor in two dimensions consisting of a core and a shell with different constant conductivities. When the medium outside the two-phase conductor has a possibly different conductivity, we consider the Cauchy problem in two dimensions where initially the conductor has temperature 0 and the outside medium has temperature 1. It is shown that, if there is a stationary isothermic surface in the shell near the boundary, then the structure of the conductor must be circular. Moreover, as by-products of the method of the proof, we mention other proofs of all the previous…
This paper investigates the optimal distribution of hard and soft material on elastic plates. In the class of isometric deformations stationary points of a Kirchhoff plate functional with incorporated material hardness function are investigated and a compliance cost functional is taken into account. Under symmetry assumptions on the material distribution and the load it is shown that cylindrical solutions are stationary points. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the optimal design of cylindrically deforming, clamped rectangular plates is non trivial, i.e. with a material distribution which i…
