Kinetic Alfvén Waves (KAWs) are generated in magnetized space and laboratory plasmas due to a continuous shear Alfvén wave (SAW) spectrum and, unlike SAWs, are characterized by microscale perpendicular structures of the order of the thermal ion Larmor radius. This has important consequences on heating, acceleration and transport processes connected with KAWs. Historically, KAWs generation by mode conversion of SAWs in laboratory plasmas and their strong damping/absorption right after SAW mode conversion have been investigated for plasma heating. Here, we focus on the opposite limit: a mode converted KAW weakly absorbed in a periodic magnetized plasma cylinder. We show that a KAW may be excited as resonant cavity mode in the region between the magnetic axis and the SAW resonant layer generated externally by an antenna launcher; this process is qualitatively similar to mode converted electron Bernstein waves. In this way, large amplitude KAWs may be generated time asymptotically with relatively small coupled antenna power. This case has little or no relevance for plasma heating but interesting nonlinear implications for plasma equilibrium. In particular, we demonstrate that KAWs may generate convective cells (CCs) by modulational instability, that a consequence of plasma nonuniformity is the azimuthal symmetry breaking due to plasma diamagnetic effects, that the modulational instability growth rate is enhanced over the corresponding uniform plasma limit, that the unstable parameter space is extended, and that the cylindrical geometry causes a complex interplay between nonlinearity and nonuniformity. As a result, we show that it is possible to control the CC radial structures and the corresponding parallel electric field generation not only by means of the antenna frequency but also by fine tuning of its amplitude.
The linear non-modal kinetic theory of the kinetic drift-Alfven instability of plasma shear flows reveals the temporal non-modal growth with growing with time growth rate. The turbulent scattering of the sheared modes on ions accelerates this growth. The instability ceases its growth when the coupling of the drift and Alfven waves violates due to the changing with time frequencies of the drift and Alfven waves in shear flow.
Using Hall-MHD theory, we focus on the resonant interaction between three kinetic Alfvén waves. We thus derive three coupled equations which govern this process. It turns out that these equations contain the same coupling coefficient, directly showing that they satisfy the Manley-Rowe relations. The coupling coefficient can be written in a comparatively very simple form, that has not been deduced before. The decay rate, when a pump kinetic Alfvén wave decays into two similar Alfvén waves, is therefore easily estimated for plasmas of astrophysical interest.
Parametric instabilities of parallel propagating, circularly polarized finite amplitude Alfven waves in a uniform background plasma is studied, within a framework of one-dimensional Vlasov description for ions and massless electron fluid, so that kinetic perturbations in the longitudinal direction (ion Landau damping) are included. The present formulation also includes the Hall effect. The obtained results agree well with relevant analysis in the past, suggesting that kinetic effects in the longitudinal direction play essential roles in the parametric instabilities of Alfven waves when the kin…
Large amplitude kinetic Alfvénon (exact Alfvén soliton) matching condition is investigated in quasineutral electron-ion and electron-positron-ion plasmas immersed in a uniform magnetic field. Using the standard pseudopotential method, the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are exactly solved and a global allowed matching condition for propagation of kinetic solitary waves is derived. It is remarked that, depending on the plasma parameters, the kinetic solitons can be sub- or super-Alfvénic, in general. It is further revealed that, either upper or lower soliton speed-limit is independent of f…
We study numerically small-scale reconnection events in kinetic, low-frequency, quasi-2D turbulence (termed kinetic-Alfvén turbulence). Using 2D particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate that such turbulence generates reconnection structures where the electron dynamics do not couple to the ions, similarly to the electron-only reconnection events recently detected in the Earth's magnetosheath by Phan et al. (2018). Electron-only reconnection is thus an inherent property of kinetic-Alfvén turbulence, where the electron current sheets have limited anisotropy and, as a result, their sizes are s…
The dispersion relation of kinetic Alfvén wave in inertial regime is studied in a three component non-degenerate streaming plasma. A lin- ear dispersion relation using fluid- Vlasov equation for quantum plasma is also derived. The quantum correction CQ raised due to the insertion of Bohm potential in Vlasov model causes the suppression in the Alfven wave frequency and the growth rates of instability. A number of analytical expressions are derived for various modes of propagation. It is also found that many system parameters, i.e, streaming velocity, dust charge, num- ber density and quantum co…
Kinetic Alfvén waves represent an important subject in space plasma physics, since they are thought to play a crucial role in the development of the turbulent energy cascade in the solar wind plasma at short wavelengths (of the order of the proton inertial length $d_p$ and beyond). A full understanding of the physical mechanisms which govern the kinetic plasma dynamics at these scales can provide important clues on the problem of the turbulent dissipation and heating in collisionless systems. In this paper, hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell simulations are employed to analyze in detail the features of the…
The kinetic excitation of ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) discrete Alfven eigenmodes in the second MHD ballooning stable domain is studied in the presence of a thermal ion temperature gradient (ITG), using linear gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations of a local flux tube in shifted-circle tokamak geometry. The instabilities are identified as alpha-induced toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (alpha-TAE); that is, bound states trapped between pressure-gradient-induced potential barriers of the Schroedinger equation for shear Alfven waves. Using numerical tools, we examine in detail the effect of kinet…
Adopting the theoretical framework for the generalized fishbonelike dispersion relation, an extended hybrid magnetohydrodynamics gyrokinetic simulation model has been derived analytically by taking into account both thermal ion compressibility and diamagnetic effects in addition to energetic particle kinetic behaviors. The extended model has been used for implementing an eXtended version of Hybrid Magnetohydrodynamics Gyrokinetic Code (XHMGC) to study thermal ion kinetic effects on Alfvénic modes driven by energetic particles, such as kinetic beta induced Alfvén eigenmodes in tokamak fusion pl…
We investigate the small but finite amplitude solitary Kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) in low $β$ plasmas with superthermal electrons modeled by a kappa-type distribution. A nonlinear Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation describing the evolution of KAWs is derived by using the standard reductive perturbation method. Examining the dependence of the nonlinear and dispersion coefficients of the KdV equation on the superthermal parameter $κ$, plasma $β$ and obliqueness of propagation, we show that these parameters may change substantially the shape and size of solitary KAW pulses. Only sub-Alfvénic, compr…
The evolution of a linearly-polarized, long-wavelength Alfvén wave --propagating in a collisionless magnetized plasma with a sheared parallel-directed velocity flow-- is here studied by means of two-dimensional hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell (HVM) simulations. The unperturbed sheared flow has been represented by an exact solution of the HVM set of equations (Malara {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. E 97, 053212), this avoiding spurious oscillations that would arise from the non-stationary initial state and inevitably affect the dynamics of the system. We have considered the evolution of both a small and a moder…
The resonant and non-resonant effects of core plasma on the excitation of low frequency modes with $ω< ω_{BAE}$, such as Beta-induced Alfvén Acoustic Eigenmodes (BAAEs) and Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBMs) are examined in the framework of the generalized fishbone-like dispersion relation. The formalism of the fishbone-like equation contains all the necessary ingredients to describe the features of these low frequency fluctuations, and explain experimental findings. Core plasma properties (diamagnetic frequency and precession resonance with trapped ions) strongly affect the excitation of the mod…
Previous studies have concluded that the Hall magnetic field structures generated during magnetic reconnection are carried away by kinetic Alfvén waves (KAW). Here we apply a kinetic simulation with an ion/electron mass ratio closer to its natural value and find that much-reduced damping rates permit the KAW to convert into shear Alfvén waves (SAW). For magnetotail reconnection these SAW provides efficient transport of wave energy, enhancing the energy input for the Aurora Borealis by orders of magnitude above previous estimates.
Recently, it has been realized that magnetic plasma turbulence and magnetic field reconnection are inherently related phenomena. Turbulent fluctuations generate regions of a sheared magnetic field that become unstable to the tearing instability and reconnection, thus modifying turbulence at the corresponding scales. In this contribution, we give a brief discussion of some recent results on tearing-mediated magnetic turbulence. We illustrate the main ideas of this rapidly developing field of study by concentrating on two important examples -- magnetohydrodynamic Alfvén turbulence and small-scal…
With first-principles kinetic simulations, we show that a large-scale Alfvén wave (AW) propagating in an inhomogeneous background decays into kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs), triggering ion and electron energization. We demonstrate that the two species can access unequal amounts of the initial AW energy, experiencing differential heating. During the decay process, the electric field carried by KAWs produces non-Maxwellian features in the particle VDFs, in accordance with space observations. The process we present solely requires the interaction of a large-scale AW with a magnetic shear and may be …
Phase space holes, double layers and other solitary electric field structures, referred to as time domain structures (TDSs), often occur around dipolarization fronts in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. They are considered to be important because of their role in the dissipation of the injection energy and their potential for significant particle scattering and acceleration. Kinetic Alfvén waves are observed to be excited during energetic particle injections, and are typically present in conjunction with TDS observations. Despite the availability of a large number of spacecraft observations, th…
The measured spectrum of kinetic Alfven wave fluctuations in the turbulent solar wind plasma is used to calculate the electron and ion distribution functions resulting from quasi-linear diffusion. The modified ion distribution function is found to be unstable to long wavelength electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. These waves pitch angle scatter the parallel ion velocity into perpendicular velocity which effectively increases the perpendicular ion temperature.
The nature of the plasma wave modes around the ion kinetic scales in highly Alfvénic slow solar wind turbulence is investigated using data from the NASA's Parker Solar Probe taken in the inner heliosphere, at 0.18 Astronomical Unit (AU) from the sun. The joint distribution of the normalized reduced magnetic helicity $σ_m (θ_{RB}, τ)$ is obtained, where $θ_{RB}$ is the angle between the local mean magnetic field and the radial direction and $τ$ is the temporal scale. Two populations around ion scales are identified: the first population has $σ_m (θ_{RB}, τ) < 0$ for frequencies (in the spacecra…
The resonant interaction between kinetic Alfvén and ion-acoustic waves is considered using the Hall-MHD theory. The results of previous authors are generalized to cover both finite Larmor radius as well as the ideal MHD results. It is found that the three wave coupling is strongest when the wavelength is comparable to the ion-sound gyroradius. Applications of our work to weak turbulence theories as well as to the heating of the solar corona are pointed out.
The possibility of fast dynamo action by collisionless kinetic Alfven Wave turbulence is demonstrated. The irreversibility necessary to lock in the generated field is provided by electron Landau damping, so the induced electric field does not vanish with resistivity. Mechanisms for self-regulation of the system and the relation of these results to the theory of alpha quenching are discussed. The dynamo-generated fields have symmetry like to that of zonal flows, and thus are termed zonal fields.
A 1-D linear gyrokinetic code called AWECS is developed to study the kinetic excitation of Alfvenic instabilities in a high-beta tokamak plasma, with beta being the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure. It is designed to describe physics associated with a broad range of frequencies and wavelengths. For example, AWECS is capable of simulating kinetic ballooning modes, Alfvenic ion-temperature-gradient-driven modes, as well as Alfven instabilities due to energetic particles. In addition, AWECS may be used to study drift-Alfven instabilities in the low-beta regime. Here, the layout of the code a…
Recent observational and analytical studies suggested that a new regime of kinetic turbulence may exist in plasma environments with low electron beta (Chen and Boldyrev, 2017). Such a regime, termed inertial kinetic-Alfvén turbulence, is relevant for the solar corona, Earth's magnetosheath, and other astrophysical systems where the electron and ion plasma beta parameters satisfy the condition $β_e\ll β_i\lesssim 1$. In this paper we present kinetic numerical simulations that confirm existence of the iKAW regime. Specifically, the simulations demonstrate a transition at scales below electron in…
We study the amplitude modulation of nonlinear kinetic Alfv{é}n waves (KAWs) in an intermediate low-beta magnetoplasma. Starting from a set of fluid equations coupled to the Maxwell's equations, we derive a coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) which govern the evolution of KAW envelopes in the plasma. The modulational instability (MI) of such KAW envelopes is then studied by a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation derived from the coupled PDEs. It is shown that the KAWs can evolve into bright envelope solitons, or can undergo damping depending on whether the characte…

A model for strong kinetic Alfvén plasma turbulence at scales smaller than the ion gyroscale is proposed. It is argued that magnetic and density fluctuations are concentrated mostly at two-dimensional structures, which leads to their Fourier energy spectra $E(k_\perp)\propto k_{\perp}^{-8/3}$, where $k_\perp$ is the wave-vector component normal to the strong background magnetic field. The results are shown to be in good agreement with numerical simulations, and they can explain recent observations of magnetic and density fluctuations in the solar wind at sub-proton scales.
This comment clarifies the relation of the research in a recently published article [Phys. Plasmas 14, 042503 (2007)] to other prior publications addressing the inclusion of electromagnetic and drift-kinetic electron physics in gyrokinetic simulation, raises a concern related to the inclusion of kinetic electrons in a system with magnetic shear, and discusses alternatives in the face of an important limitation on the general applicability of the algorithm described therein.
A nonlocal coupling mechanism to directly transfer the energy from large-scale Magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) Alfven waves to small-scale kinetic Alfven waves is presented. It is shown that the interaction between a MHD Alfven wave and a reversely propagating kinetic Alfven wave can generate another kinetic Alfven wave, and this interaction exists in the plasmas where the thermal to magnetic pressure ratio is larger than the electron to ion mass ratio. The proposed nonlocal interaction may have a potential application to account for the observed electron scale kinetic Alfven waves in the solar wind …

Exact relativistic force free fields with cylindrical symmetry are explored. Such fields are generated in the interstellar gas via their connection to pulsar magnetospheres both inside and outside their light cylinders. The possibility of much enhanced interstellar fields wound on cylinders of Solar system dimensions is discussed but these are most likely unstable.
Turbulence is thought to play a role in the heating of the solar wind plasma, though many questions remain to be solved regarding the exact nature of the mechanisms driving this process in the heliosphere. In particular, the physics of the collisionless interactions between particles and turbulent electromagnetic fields in the kinetic dissipation range of the turbulent cascade remains incompletely understood. A recent analysis of an interval of Magnetosphere Multiscale (MMS) observations has used the field-particle correlation technique to demonstrate that electron Landau damping is involved i…
It is shown that the dispersion relation for whistler waves is identical for a high or low beta plasma. Furthermore in the high-beta solar wind plasma whistler waves meet the Landau resonance with electrons for velocities less than the thermal speed, and consequently the electric force is small compared to the mirror force. As whistlers propagate through the inhomogeneous solar wind, the perpendicular wave number increases through refraction, increasing the Landau damping rate. However, the whistlers can survive because the background kinetic Alfven wave turbulence creates a plateau by quasili…
Observations reveal nearly power-law spectra of magnetic and density plasma fluctuations at subproton scales in the solar wind, which indicates the presence of a turbulent cascade. We discuss the three-field and two-field models for micro-scale plasma fluctuations, and then present the results of numerical simulations of a two-field model of kinetic-Alfven turbulence, which models plasma motion at sub-proton scales.
We present results from a three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation of plasma turbulence, resembling the plasma conditions found at kinetic scales of the solar wind. The spectral properties of the turbulence in the subion range are consistent with theoretical expectations for kinetic Alfv\' en waves. Furthermore, we calculate the local anisotropy, defined by the relation $k_{\parallel}(k_{\perp})$, where $k_{\parallel}$ is a characteristic wave number along the local mean magnetic field at perpendicular scale $l_{\perp}\sim 1/k_{\perp}$. The subion range anisotropy is scale dependent with …
Compressional Alfvén eigenmodes (CAE) driven by energetic ions have been observed in magnetic fusion experiments. In this paper, we show that the modes can also be driven by runaway electrons formed in post-disruption plasma, which may explain kinetic instabilities observed in DIII-D disruption experiments with massive gas injection. The mode-structure is calculated, as are the frequencies which are in agreement with experimental observations. Using a runaway electron distribution function obtained from a kinetic simulation, the mode growth rates are calculated and found to exceed the collisio…
The gyrokinetic particle simulation serves as a powerful tool for the studies of transport, nonlinear phenomenon, and energetic particle physics in tokamak plasmas. While most gyrokinetic simulations make use of the scalar and vector potentials, a new model (GK-E&B) has been developed by using the E and B field in a general and comprehensive form and has been implemented in simulating kinetic Alfvén waves in uniform plasma [Chen et al, Science China Phys. Mechanics & Astronomy 64 (2021)]. In our work, the Chen et al. GK-E&B model has been expressed in general tokamak geometry explicitly using …
We demonstrate analytically that, in toroidal plasmas, scattering by drift wave turbulence could lead to appreciable damping of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes via generation of short-wavelength electron Landau damped kinetic Alfven waves. A corresponding analytic expression of the damping rate is derived, and found to be, typically, comparable to the linear drive by energetic particles. The implications of this novel mechanism on the transport and heating processes in burning plasmas are also discussed.
In a weakly collisional, low-electron-beta plasma, large-scale Alfvén turbulence transforms into inertial kinetic-Alfvén turbulence at scales smaller than the ion microscale (gyroscale or inertial scale). We propose that at such kinetic scales, the nonlinear dynamics tend to organize turbulent eddies into thin current sheets, consistent with the existence of two conserved integrals of the ideal equations, energy and helicity. The formation of strongly anisotropic structures is arrested by the tearing instability that sets a critical aspect ratio of the eddies at each scale $a$ in the plane per…
Gyrokinetic theory of nonlinear mode coupling as a mechanism for toroidal Alfven eigenmode (TAE) saturation in the fusion plasma related parameter regime is presented, including 1) para- metric decay of TAE into lower kinetic TAE (LKTAE) and geodesic acoustic mode (GAM), and 2) enhanced TAE coupling to shear Alfven wave (SAW) continuum via ion induced scattering. Our theory shows that, for TAE saturation in the parameter range of practical interest, several processes with comparable scattering cross sections can be equally important.
One view of the solar-wind turbulence is that the observed highly anisotropic fluctuations at spatial scales near the proton inertial length $d_p$ may be considered as Kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs). In the present paper, we show how phase-mixing of large-scale parallel propagating Alfvén waves is an efficient mechanism for the production of KAWs at wavelengths close to $d_p$ and at large propagation angle with respect to the magnetic field. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), Hall-Magnetohydrodynamic (HMHD), and hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell (HVM) simulations modeling the propagation of Alfvén waves in inhomogen…
Kinetic Alfven wave turbulence in solar wind is considered and it is shown that non-Maxwellian electron distribution function has a significant effect on the dynamics of the solar wind plasmas. Linear Landau damping leads to the formation of a plateau in the parallel electron distribution function which diminishes the Landau damping rate significantly. Nonlinear scattering of waves by plasma particles is generalized to short wavelengths and it is found that for the solar wind parameters this scattering is the dominant process as compared to three wave decay and coalescence in the wave vector r…
A numerical simulation of kinetic plasma turbulence is performed to assess the applicability of critical balance to kinetic, dissipation scale turbulence. The analysis is performed in the frequency domain to obviate complications inherent in performing a local analysis of turbulence. A theoretical model of dissipation scale critical balance is constructed and compared to simulation results, and excellent agreement is found. This result constitutes the first evidence of critical balance in a kinetic turbulence simulation and provides evidence of an anisotropic turbulence cascade extending into …
We investigate properties of the plasma fluid motion in the large amplitude low frequency fluctuations of highly Alfvénic fast solar wind. We show that protons locally conserve total kinetic energy when observed from an effective frame of reference comoving with the fluctuations. For typical properties of the fast wind, this frame can be reasonably identified by alpha particles, which, owing to their drift with respect to protons at about the Alfvén speed along the magnetic field, do not partake in the fluid low frequency fluctuations. Using their velocity to transform proton velocity into the…
We investigate dispersive and kinetic effects on the evolution of a two-dimensional kinked Alfvén wave packet by comparing results from MHD, Hall-MHD and hybrid simulations of a low-$β$ plasma. We find that the Hall term determines the overall evolution of the wave packet over a characteristic time $τ^*=τ_a\ell/d_i$ in both fluid and hybrid models. Dispersion of the wave packet leads to the conversion of the wave energy into internal plasma energy. When kinetic protons are considered, the proton internal energy increase has contributions from both plasma compressions and phase space mixing. Th…
Kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) are the short-wavelength extension of the MHD Alfvén-wave branch in the case of highly-oblique propagation with respect to the background magnetic field. Observations of space plasma show that small-scale turbulence is mainly KAW-like. We apply two theoretical approaches, collisional two-fluid theory and collisionless kinetic theory, to obtain predictions for the KAW polarizations depending on $β_\mathrm{p}$ (the ratio of the proton thermal pressure to the magnetic pressure) at the ion gyroscale in terms of fluctuations in density, bulk velocity, and pressure. We pe…
The saturation of ion cyclotron Alfven turbulence excited by beam particles is investigated using resonance broadening theory. The stochastic scattering which decorrelates particles, includes both random acceleration by electric fields and a turbulent magnetic mirroring effect. Turbulent mirroring is shown to yield non-Gaussian corrections to the orbits even if the random electric and magnetic fields are Gaussian. The predicted steady-state turbulence level exhibits a peaked anglular distribution, with a maximum near Theta ~ 60 degrees.
The kinetic effects of electrons are important to long wavelength magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)instabilities and short wavelength drift-Alfvenic instabilities responsible for turbulence transport in magnetized plasmas, since the non-adiabatic electron can interact with, modify and drive the low frequency instabilities. A novel conservative split weight scheme is proposed for the electromagnetic simulation with drift kinetic electrons in tokamak plasmas, which shows great computational advantages that there is no numerical constrain of electron skin depth on the perpendicular grid size without sacri…
Nonlinear saturation of beta induced Alfvén eigenmode, driven by slowing down energetic particles via transit resonance, is investigated by the nonlinear hybrid magnetohyrodynamic gyro-kinetic code (XHMGC). Saturation is characterized by frequency chirping and symmetry breaking between co- and counter-passing particles, which can be understood as the the evidence of resonance-detuning. The scaling of the saturation amplitude with the growth rate is also demonstrated to be consistent with radial resonance detuning due to the radial non-uniformity and mode structure.
A weakly dispersive sub-range (WDR) of kinetic Alfvén turbulence is distinguished and investigated for the first time in the context of MHD/kinetic turbulence transition. We found perpendicular wavenumber spectra ~ k^{-3} and ~ k^{-4} formed in WDR by strong and weak turbulence of kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs), respectively. These steep WDR spectra connect shallower spectra in the MHD and strongly dispersive KAW sub-ranges, which results in a specific double-kink (2-k) pattern often seen in observed turbulent spectra. The first kink occurs where MHD turbulence transforms into weakly dispersive K…
The influence of various kinetic effects (e.g. Landau damping, diffusive and collisional dissipation, and finite Larmor radius terms) on the nonlinear evolution of finite amplitude Alfvenic wave trains in a finite-beta environment is systematically investigated using a novel, kinetic nonlinear Schrodinger (KNLS) equation. The dynamics of Alfven waves is sensitive to the sense of polarization as well as the angle of propagation with respect to the ambient magnetic field. Numerical solution for the case with Landau damping reveals the formation of dissipative structures, which are quasi-stationa…
We use fluctuating magnetic helicity to investigate the polarisation properties of Alfvénic fluctuations at ion-kinetic scales in the solar wind as a function of $β_p$, the ratio of proton thermal pressure to magnetic pressure, and $θ_{vB}$, the angle between the proton flow and local mean magnetic field, $\mathbf{B}_0$. Using almost 15 years of \textit{Wind} observations, we separate the contributions to helicity from fluctuations with wave-vectors, $\textbf{k}$, quasi-parallel and oblique to $\mathbf{B}_0$, finding that the helicity of Alfvénic fluctuations is consistent with predictions fro…
We report analytical and numerical investigations of sub-ion-scale turbulence in low-beta plasmas, focusing on the spectral properties of the fluctuations and electron heating. In the isothermal limit, the numerical results strongly support a description of the turbulence as a critically-balanced Kolmogorov-like cascade of kinetic Alfvén wave fluctuations, as amended by Boldyrev & Perez (Astrophys. J. Lett. 758, L44 (2012)) to include intermittent effects. When the constraint of isothermality is removed (i.e., with the inclusion of electron kinetic physics), the energy spectrum is found to ste…
A conservative scheme has been formulated and verified for gyrokinetic particle simulations of electromagnetic waves and instabilities in magnetized plasmas. An electron continuity equation derived from drift kinetic equation is used to time advance electron density perturbation by using the perturbed mechanical flow calculated from the parallel vector potential, and the parallel vector potential is solved by using the perturbed canonical flow from the perturbed distribution function. In gyrokinetic particle simulations using this new scheme, shear Alfvén wave dispersion relation in shearless …
