Stochastic model and kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of solute interactions with stationary and moving grain boundaries. II. Application to two-dimensional systems
In Part I of this work, we proposed a stochastic model describing solute interactions with stationary and moving grain boundaries (GBs) and applied it to planar GBs in 1D systems. The model reproduces nonlinear GB dynamics, solute saturation in the segregation atmosphere, and all basic features of the solute drag effect. Part II of this work extends the model to 2D GBs represented by solid-on-solid interfaces. The model predicts a GB roughening transition in stationary GBs and reversible dynamic roughening in moving GBs. The impacts of the GB roughening on GB migration mechanisms, GB mobility, and the solute drag are studied in detail. The threshold effect in GB dynamics is explained by the dynamic roughening transition, which is amplified in the presence of solute segregation. The simulation results are compared with the classical models by Cahn and Lücke-Stüwe and previous computer simulations.
Stochastic model and kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of solute interactions with stationary and moving grain boundaries. I. Model formulation and application to one-dimensional systems
The control of solute segregation at grain boundaries (GBs) is essential in engineering alloy properties, however the structure-activity relationship of the key parameter-the segregation energies-still remains elusive. Here we propose the electronic and geometric descriptors of GB segregation based on the valence, electronegativity and size of solutes and the non-local coordination number of free surfaces, with which we build a predictive framework to determine the segregation energies across different solutes, matrices, GB structures and segregation sites. This framework uncovers not only the…
We show that molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are capable of reproducing the drag of solute segregation atmospheres by moving grain boundaries (GBs). Although lattice diffusion is frozen out on the MD timescale, the accelerated GB diffusion provides enough atomic mobility to allow the segregated atoms to follow the moving GB. This finding opens the possibility of studying the solute drag effect with atomic precision using the MD approach. We demonstrate that a moving GB activates diffusion and alters the short-range order in the lattice regions swept during its motion. It is also shown that…
In magnesium alloys with multiple substitutional elements, solute segregation at grain boundaries (GBs) has a strong impact on many important material characteristics, such as GB energy and mobility, and therefore, texture. Although it is well established that GB segregation is inhomogeneous, the variation of GB solute composition for random boundaries is still not understood. In the current study, atomic-scale experimental and simulation techniques were used to investigate the compositional inhomogeneity of six different GBs. Three-dimensional atom probe tomography results revealed that GB so…

We investigate the effect of solute drag on grain growth (GG) kinetics in olivine-rich rocks through full field and mean field modelling. Considering a drag force exerted by impurities on grain boundary migration allows reconciling laboratory and natural constraints on olivine GG kinetics. Solute drag is implemented in a full field level-set framework and on a mean field model, which explicitly accounts for a grain size distribution. After calibration of the mean field model on full field results, both models are able to both reproduce laboratory GG kinetics and to predict grain sizes consiste…
Faceted grain boundaries exhibit unusual segregation and migration tendencies. To gain a deeper understanding of how solute atoms interact with faceted interfacial structures during migration, this study probes the migration behavior of a faceted $Σ$11 boundary in Cu doped with Ag atoms. The solutes are found to segregate to the facet with more free volume and strongly reduce boundary velocity in one migration direction, but not the other, due to the presence of a directionally-dependent motion mechanism that can escape solute pinning and therefore speed up migration. Hence, a new mechanism of…
The study of defect phases is important for designing nanostructured metals and alloys. Grain boundaries (GBs) form one class of defects that directly influence materials properties, such as deformability and strength. At the same time, alloying can introduce GB phase transformations and can therewith alter mechanical performance. In this work, the defect phases of a $Σ$7 $(12\bar{3}0)$ [0001] 21.78$^\circ$ symmetric tilt GB in hcp Mg are investigated. Ab-initio simulations as a function of stress and temperature (using quasi-harmonic approximation) are performed, and different types of phase …
In this work, we experimentally establish the isothermal nanofacet evolution at an asymmetric tilt grain boundary in the Cu-Ag system using a diffusion couple approach. We investigate the nanofacet formation along the grain boundary in dependence of the Ag solute excess concentration. The initial grain boundary dissociates into asymmetric Ag-lean segments and Ag-rich symmetric (210) segments. Increasing Ag excess leads to an increase in Ag-rich facet segment length, while the length of the asymmetric facets remains constant. From this, we construct a grain boundary nanofaceting diagram deduced…
High strength 7xxx Al-alloys are currently commonly used in aerospace and are expected to be increasingly employed in the automotive sector for weight reduction purposes. These alloys can however be sensitive to stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) depending on temper and loading conditions. Both the alloy's grain structure and composition are believed to play a key role in determining sensitivity to SCC. Here, we study at the nanometer scale the evolution of the microstructure near stress corrosion cracks on two different model variants of the 7140 aluminum alloy. We performed double cantilever be…
