We have conducted a search for $z\simeq7$ Lyman break galaxies over 8.2 square degrees of near-infrared imaging from the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey in the XMM-Newton - Large Scale Structure (XMM-LSS) and the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S) fields. Candidate galaxies were selected from a full photometric redshift analysis down to a $Y+J$ depth of 25.3 ($5σ$), utilizing deep auxiliary optical and Spitzer/IRAC data to remove brown dwarf and red interloper galaxy contaminants. Our final sample consists of 28 candidate galaxies at $6.5\le z \le7.5$ with $-23.5 \le M_{\mathrm{UV}} \le -21.6$. We derive stellar masses of $9.1 \le \mathrm{log}_{10}(M/M_{\odot}) \le 10.9$ for the sample, suggesting that these candidates represent some of the most massive galaxies known at this epoch. We measure the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) at $z\simeq7$, confirming previous findings of a gradual decline in number density at the bright-end ($M_{\mathrm{UV}} < -22$) that is well described by a double-power law (DPL). We show that quasar contamination in this magnitude range is expected to be minimal, in contrast to conclusions from recent pure-parallel Hubble studies. Our results are up to a factor of ten lower than previous determinations from optical-only ground-based studies at $M_{\rm UV} \lesssim - 23$. We find that the inclusion of $YJHK_{s}$ photometry is vital for removing brown-dwarf contaminants, and $z \simeq 7$ samples based on red-optical data alone could be highly contaminated ($\gtrsim 50$ per cent). In comparison with other robust $z > 5$ samples, our results further support little evolution in the very bright-end of the rest-frame UV LF from $z = 5-10$, potentially signalling a lack of mass quenching and/or dust obscuration in the most massive galaxies in the first Gyr.
We present the discovery of a new $z \sim 6.8$ quasar discovered with the near-IR VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) which has been spectroscopically confirmed by the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) and the Magellan telescope. This quasar has been selected by spectral energy distribution (SED) classification using near infrared data from VISTA, optical data from Pan-STARRS, and mid-IR data from WISE. The SED classification algorithm is used to statistically rank two classes; foreground Galactic low-mass stars and high redshift quasars, prior to spectroscopic observation. Forced photometry on Pan…
We report the first confirmed detection of the galaxy cluster VVV-J144321-611754 at very low latitudes (l = 315.836$^{\circ}$, b = -1.650$^{\circ}$) located in the tile d015 of the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) survey. We defined the region of 30$\times$ 30 $arcmin^2$ centered in the brightest galaxy finding 25 galaxies. For these objects, extinction-corrected median colors of (H - K$_{s}$) = 0.34 $\pm$ 0.05 mag, (J - H) = 0.57 $\pm$ 0.08 mag and (J - K$_{s}$) = 0.87 $\pm$ 0.06 mag, and R$_{1/2}$ = 1.59 $\pm$ 0.16 $arcsec$; C = 3.01 $\pm$ 0.08; and Sersic index, n = 4.63 $\pm$ 0.39 w…
Aims. We analyze the properties of the sources in the NGC253 to define an up to date catalog of GC candidates in the galaxy. Methods. Our analysis is based on the science verification data of two ESO survey telescopes, VST and VISTA. Using ugri photometry from VST and JKs from VISTA, GC candidates were selected using the morpho-photometric and color properties of spectroscopically confirmed GCs available in the literature. The strength of the results was verified against available archival HST/ACS data from the GHOSTS survey. Results. The adopted GC selection leads to the definition of a sampl…
We search for extragalactic sources in the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea survey that are hidden by the Galaxy. Herein, we describe our photometric procedure to find and characterize extragalactic objects using a combination of SExtractor and PSFEx. It was applied in two tiles of the survey: d010 and d115, without previous extragalactic IR detections, in order to obtain photometric parameters of the detected sources. The adopted criteria to define extragalactic candidates include CLASS_STAR < 0.3; 1.0 < R1/2 < 5.0 arcsec; 2.1 < C < 5; and Phi > 0.002 and the colors: 0.5 < (J - K_s) < 2.0 ma…
[abridged] We used J and Ks band images acquired with the VISTA telescope as part of the science verification to quantify the structures in the stellar disk of the barred Sc galaxy NGC253. Moving outward from the galaxy center, we find a nuclear ring within the bright 1 kpc diameter nucleus, then a bar, a ring with 2.9 kpc radius. From the Ks image we obtain a new measure of the deprojected length of the bar of 2.5 kpc. The bar's strength, as derived from the curvature of the dust lanes in the J-Ks image, is typical of weak bars. From the deprojected length of the bar, we establish the corotat…
We present the discovery and analysis of J1316+2614 at z=3.6130, a UV-bright star-forming galaxy ($M_{\rm UV} \simeq -24.7$) with large escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation. J1316+2614 is a young ($\simeq 10$ Myr) star-forming galaxy with $SFR \simeq 500 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and a starburst mass of log($M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \simeq 9.7$. It shows a very steep UV continuum, $β_{\rm UV} \simeq -2.59 \pm 0.05$, consistent with residual dust obscuration, $E(B-V)\simeq 0$. LyC emission is detected with high significance ($\simeq 17 σ$) down to $830$Å, for which a very high relative (absolute) L…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array observations of the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission of six bright Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $z \simeq 7$. One LBG is detected ($5.2σ$ at peak emission), while the others remain individually undetected at the $3σ$ level. The average FIR luminosity of the sample is found to be $L_{\rm FIR} \simeq 2 \times 10^{11}\,{\rm L}_{\odot}$, corresponding to an obscured star-formation rate (SFR) that is comparable to that inferred from the unobscured UV emission. In comparison to the infrared excess (IRX$\,=L_{\rm FIR}/L_{\…
The currently defined "UKIRT Faint Standards" have JHK magnitudes between 10 and 15, with K_median=11.2. These stars will be too bright for the next generation of large telescopes. We have used multi-epoch observations taken as part of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) and the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) surveys to identify non-variable stars with JHK magnitudes in the range 16-19. The stars were selected from the UKIDSS Deep Extragalactic Survey (DXS) and Ultra Deep Survey (UDS), the WFCAM calibration data (WFCAMCAL08B), the VISTA Deep Extragalactic O…
We measure the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) at $z \sim 4$ self-consistently over a wide range in absolute magnitude ($-27 \lesssim M_{\rm UV} \lesssim -20$). The LF is measured with 46,904 sources selected using a photometric redshift approach over $ \sim 6$ deg$^2$ of the combined COSMOS and XMM-LSS fields. We simultaneously fit for both AGN and galaxy LFs using a combination of Schechter or Double Power Law (DPL) functions alongside a single power law for the faint-end slope of the AGN LF. We find a lack of evolution in the shape of the bright-end of the LBG component when compared…
Recent work has shown that UV-luminous reionization-era galaxies often exhibit strong Lyman-alpha emission despite being situated at redshifts where the IGM is thought to be substantially neutral. It has been argued that this enhanced Ly$α$ transmission reflects the presence of massive galaxies in overdense regions which power large ionized bubbles. An alternative explanation is that massive galaxies shift more of their Ly$α$ profile to large velocities (relative to the systemic redshift) where the IGM damping wing absorption is reduced. Such a mass-dependent trend is seen at lower redshifts, …
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) are typically massive ellipticals at the centers of clusters. They are believed to experience strong environmental processing, and their mass assembly and star formation history are still debated. We have selected three star forming BCGs in the equatorial field of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) at intermediate redshifts. We have observed them with the IRAM-30m telescope in the first three CO transitions. We remarkably detected all BCGs at high signal-to-noise ratio ${\rm S/N}\simeq(3.8-10.2)$, for a total of 7 detected lines out of 8, corresponding to a success…
Wide Area VISTA Extra-galactic Survey (WAVES): Unsupervised star-galaxy separation on the WAVES-Wide photometric input catalogue using UMAP and ${\rm{\scriptsize HDBSCAN}}$
We utilize deep near-infrared survey data from the UltraVISTA fourth data release (DR4) and the VIDEO survey, in combination with overlapping optical and Spitzer data, to search for bright star-forming galaxies at $z \gtrsim 7.5$. Using a full photometric redshift fitting analysis applied to the $\sim 6\,{\rm deg}^2$ of imaging searched, we find 27 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs), including 20 new sources, with best-fitting photometric redshifts in the range $7.4 < z < 9.1$. From this sample we derive the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) at $z = 8$ and $z = 9$ out to extremely bright UV magn…
VISTA variables in the Via Lactea is an ESO Public survey dedicated to scan the bulge and an adjacent portion of the Galactic disk in the fourth quadrant using the VISTA telescope and the near-infrared camera VIRCAM. One of the leading goals of the VVV survey is to contribute to the knowledge of the star cluster population of the Milky Way. To improve the census of the Galactic star clusters, we performed a systematic scan of the JHKs images of the Galactic plane section of the VVV survey. Our detection procedure is based on a combination of superficial density maps and visual inspection of pr…
We present results from a near/mid IR search for submillimetre galaxies over a region of 6230 sq deg. of the southern sky. We used a cross-correlation of the VISTA Hemispheric Survey (VHS) and the WISE database to identify bright galaxies (K_s <= 18.2) with near/mid IR colours similar to those of the high redshift lensed sub-mm galaxy SMM J2135-0102. We find 7 galaxies which fulfill all five adopted near/mid IR colour (NMIRQC) criteria and resemble the SED of the reference galaxy at these wavelengths. For these galaxies, which are broadly distributed in the sky, we determined photometric redsh…
The onset of the {\it JWST}-era provides a much-improved opportunity to characterize the resolved structure of early star forming systems. Previous {\it Spitzer} observations of $z\gtrsim 6$ galaxies revealed the presence of old stars and luminous HII regions (via [OIII]+H$β$ emission), but the poor resolution stunted our ability to map their locations with respect to the star forming regions identified in the rest-UV. In this paper, we investigate the internal structure of 12 of the most luminous $z\simeq 6-8$ galaxies in the EGS field observed with recent {\it JWST}/NIRCam imaging. The syste…
We present deep ALMA dust continuum observations for a sample of luminous ($M_{\rm UV} < -22$) star-forming galaxies at $z \simeq 7$. We detect five of the six sources in the far-infrared (FIR), providing key constraints on the obscured star-formation rate (SFR) and the infrared-excess-$β$ (IRX-$β$) relation without the need for stacking. Despite the galaxies showing blue rest-frame UV slopes ($β\simeq -2$) we find that 35-75 percent of the total SFR is obscured. We find the IRX-$β$ relation derived for these $z \simeq 7$ sources is consistent with that found for local star-burst galaxies. Usi…
Using a large sample of sub-L$_*$ galaxies, with similar UV magnitudes, M$_{\rm UV}\simeq -19$ at $z\simeq6$, extracted from the FirstLight simulations, we show the diversity of galaxies at the end of the reionization epoch. We find a factor $\sim$40 variation in the specific star-formation rate (sSFR). This drives a $\sim$1 dex range in equivalent width of the [OIII]$λ$5007 line. Variations in nebular metallicity and ionization parameter within HII regions lead to a scatter in the equivalent widths and [OIII]/H$α$ line ratio at a fixed sSFR. [OIII]-bright emitters ([OIII]/H$α$>1) have higher …
We present the Ly$α$ luminosity function (LF) derived from 34 Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=7.0$ on the sky of $3.1$ deg$^2$, the largest sample compared to those in the literature obtained at a redshift $z\gtrsim7$. The LAE sample is made by deep large-area Subaru narrowband observations conducted by the Cosmic HydrOgen Reionization Unveiled with Subaru (CHORUS) project. The $z=7.0$ Ly$α$ LF of our project is consistent with those of the previous DECam and Subaru studies at the bright and faint ends, respectively, while our $z=7.0$ Ly$α$ LF has uncertainties significantly smaller than those of …
We report on the optical properties of infrared (IR)-bright dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) that are defined as (i-[22])_AB > 7.0. Because supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in IR-bright DOGs are expected to be rapidly growing in the major merger scenario, they provide useful clues for understanding the co-evolution of SMBHs and their host galaxies. However, the optical properties of IR-bright DOGs remain unclear because the optical emission of a DOG is very faint. By combining ~ 105 deg^2 images of the optical, near-IR, and mid-IR data obtained from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey, the …
Outskirts of large galaxies contain important information about the galaxy formation and assembly process, and resolved star count studies can probe the extremely low surface brightness of the outer halos. We use images obtained with the VISTA telescope to construct spatially resolved J vs Z-J colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of NGC 253, a nearly edge-on disk galaxy in the Sculptor group. The very deep photometry, down to J ~ 23.5, and the wide area covered allows us to trace the red giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars that belong to the outer disk and the halo of NGC 25…
We present the VISTA-CFHT Stripe 82 (VICS82) survey: a near-infrared (J+Ks) survey covering 150 square degrees of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) equatorial Stripe 82 to an average depth of J=21.9 AB mag and Ks=21.4 AB mag (80% completeness limits; 5-sigma point source depths are approximately 0.5 mag brighter). VICS82 contributes to the growing legacy of multi-wavelength data in the Stripe 82 footprint. The addition of near-infrared photometry to the existing SDSS Stripe 82 coadd ugriz photometry reduces the scatter in stellar mass estimates to delta log(M_stellar)~0.3 dex for galaxies wi…
We report the discovery of a very diverse set of five low-surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxy candidates in Hickson Compact Group 90 (HCG 90) detected in deep U- and I-band images obtained with VLT/VIMOS. These are the first LSB dwarf galaxy candidates found in a compact group of galaxies. We measure spheroid half-light radii in the range $0.7\!\lesssim\! r_{\rm eff}/{\rm kpc}\! \lesssim\! 1.5$ with luminosities of $-11.65\!\lesssim\! M_U\! \lesssim\! -9.42$ and $-12.79\!\lesssim\! M_I\! \lesssim\! -10.58$ mag, corresponding to a color range of $(U\!-\!I)_0\!\simeq\!1.1\!-\!2.2$ mag and surf…
We present new observations of sixteen bright ($r=19-21$) gravitationally lensed galaxies at $z\simeq 1-3$ selected from the CASSOWARY survey. Included in our sample is the $z=1.42$ galaxy CSWA-141, one of the brightest known reionization-era analogs at high redshift (g=20.5), with a large sSFR (31.2 Gyr$^{-1}$) and an [OIII]+H$β$ equivalent width (EW$_{\rm{[OIII]+Hβ}}$=730~Å) that is nearly identical to the average value expected at $z\simeq 7-8$. In this paper, we investigate the rest-frame UV nebular line emission in our sample with the goal of understanding the factors that regulate strong…
Hubble Space Telescope imaging for 26 giant early-type galaxies, all drawn from the MAST archive, is used to carry out photometry of their surrounding globular cluster (GC) systems. Most of these targets are Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and their distances range from 24 to 210 Mpc. The catalogs of photometry, completed with DOLPHOT, are publicly available. The GC color indices are converted to [Fe/H] through a combination of 12-Gyr SSP (Single Stellar Population) models and direct spectroscopic calibration of the fiducial color index (F475W-F850LP). All the resulting metallicity distribut…
We analyse a unique sample of 517 bright ($L>L^{*}$) LBGs at redshift z$\sim$3 in order to characterise the distribution of their UV slopes $β$ and infer their dust extinction under standard assumptions. We exploited multi-band observations over 750 arcmin$^2$ of the COSMOS field that were acquired with three different ground-based facilities: the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), the Suprime-Cam on the SUBARU telescope, and the VIRCAM on the VISTA telescope (ULTRAVISTA DR2). Our multi-band photometric catalogue is based on a new method that is designed to ma…
We quantify the distribution of [OIII]+H$β$ line strengths at z$\simeq$7 using a sample of 20 bright (M$_{\mathrm{UV}}$ $\lesssim$ $-$21) galaxies. We select these systems over wide-area fields (2.3 deg$^2$ total) using a new colour-selection which precisely selects galaxies at z$\simeq$6.63$-$6.83, a redshift range where blue Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]$-$[4.5] colours unambiguously indicate strong [OIII]$+$H$β$ emission. These 20 galaxies suggest a log-normal [OIII]$+$H$β$ EW distribution with median EW = 759$^{+112}_{-113}$ $\mathrm{\mathring{A}}$ and standard deviation = 0.26$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ dex.…
We present a study of seven spectroscopically confirmed (Ly$α$ emitting) galaxies at redshift $z\simeq6$ using the $JWST$/NIRCam imaging data. These galaxies, with a wide range of Ly$α$ luminosities, were recently observed in a series of NIRCam broad- and medium-bands. We constrain the rest-frame UV/optical continua and measure the H$α$ line emission of the galaxies using the combination of the $JWST$/NIRCam and archival $HST$/WFC3 infrared photometry. We further estimate their escape fractions of Ly$α$ photons ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm Lyα}$) and the production efficiency of ionizing photons ($ξ_{\r…
We present the results of a first search for galaxy candidates at z$\sim$9--15 on deep seven-bands NIRCam imaging acquired as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program on a flanking field of the Frontier Fields cluster A2744. Candidates are selected via two different renditions of the Lyman-break technique, isolating objects at z$\sim$9-11, and z$\sim$9-15, respectively, supplemented by photometric redshifts obtained with two independent codes. We find five color-selected candidates at z$>$9, plus one additional candidate with photometric redshift z$_{phot}\geq$9. In particular, we …
We investigate the evolution of star formation rates (SFRs), stellar masses, and M/L$_{3.4 μm}$ ratios of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the COSMOS survey since z ~ 1 to determine the contribution of star formation to the growth-rate of BCG stellar mass over time. Through the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of the GALEX, CFHT, Subaru, Vista, Spitzer, and Herschel photometric data available in the COSMOS2015 catalog, we estimate the stellar mass and SFR of each BCG. We use a modified version of the iSEDfit package to fit the SEDs of our sample with both stellar and dust emissio…
In a recent paper (Fumagalli et al. 2017) we reported on the detection of a diffuse H$α$ glow in the outskirts of the nearby, edge-on disc galaxy UGC 7321 observed with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the ESO Very Large Telescope. By interpreting the H$α$ emission as fluorescence arising from hydrogen ionised by an external (i.e., extragalactic) radiation field, we estimated the UV background (UVB) intensity in terms of HI ionisation rate (per ion) at $z\simeq 0$ to be in the range $Γ_{\rm HI}\sim 6-8\times 10^{-14}$ s$^{-1}$. In the present work, by performing radiative transf…
We report on a search for new low-surface-brightness galaxies (LSBGs) using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data within the GAMA equatorial fields. The search method consisted of masking objects detected with SDSS photo, combining gri images weighted to maximise the expected signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and smoothing the images. The processed images were then run through a detection algorithm that finds all pixels above a set threshold and groups them based on their proximity to one another. The list of detections was cleaned of contaminants such as diffraction spikes and the faint wings of ma…
We have initiated a program to study the baryon content and dynamic state of galaxy clusters. Here we present results primarily from XMM-Newton observations of two optically-selected galaxy clusters, A1095 ($z \simeq 0.210$) and A1926 ($z \simeq 0.136$). We find that both of them are actually cluster pairs at similar redshifts. We characterize the temperatures of these individual clusters through X-ray spectral fits and then estimate their gravitational masses. We show a rich set of substructures, including large position offsets between the diffuse X-ray centroids and the brightest galaxies o…

We report the identification of radio (0.144-3 GHz), mid-IR, far-IR, and sub-mm (24-850$μ$m) emission at the position of one of 41 UV-bright (M$_\mathrm{UV}^{}\lesssim-21.25$) $z\simeq6.6-6.9$ Lyman-break galaxy candidates in the 1.5 deg$^2$ COSMOS field. This source, COS-87259, exhibits a sharp flux discontinuity (factor $>$3) between two narrow/intermediate bands at 9450 and 9700 Angstroms and is undetected in all nine bands blueward of 9600 Angstroms, as expected from a Lyman-alpha break at $z\simeq6.8$. The full multi-wavelength (X-ray through radio) data of COS-87529 can be self-consisten…
The variety of star formation histories (SFHs) of $z\gtrsim6$ galaxies provides important insights into early star formation, but has been difficult to systematically quantify. Some observations suggest that many $z\sim6-9$ galaxies are dominated by $\gtrsim200$ Myr stellar populations, implying significant star formation at $z\gtrsim9$, while others find that most reionization era galaxies are $\lesssim10$ Myr, consistent with little $z\gtrsim9$ star formation. Here, we quantify the distribution of ages of UV-bright ($-22.5\lesssim M_{UV}\lesssim-21$) galaxies colour-selected to lie at $z\sim…
We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 7 observational results of a Lyman break galaxy at $ z=7.15 $, B14-65666 ("Big Three Dragons"), which is an object detected in [OIII] 88 $\rm{μm}$, [CII] 158 $\rm{μm}$, and dust-continuum emission during the epoch of reionization. Our targets are the [NII] 122 $\rm{μm}$ fine-structure emission line and underlying 120 $\rm{μm}$ dust continuum. The dust continuum is detected with a $ \sim $19$ σ$ significance. From far-infrared spectral energy distribution sampled at 90, 120, and 160 $\rm{μm}$, we obtaine a best-fit dust temperatur…
VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) is one of six ESO Public Surveys using the 4 meter Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). The VVV survey covers the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk, and one of the principal objectives is to search for new star clusters within previously unreachable obscured parts of the Galaxy. The primary motivation behind this work is to discover and analyze obscured star clusters in the direction of the inner Galactic disk and bulge. Regions of the inner disk and bulge covered by the VVV survey were visually inspected using c…
We report the discovery of 158 previously undetected dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster central regions using a deep coadded $u, g$ and $i$-band image obtained with the DECam wide-field camera mounted on the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory as part of the {\it Next Generation Fornax Survey} (NGFS). The new dwarf galaxies have quasi-exponential light profiles, effective radii $0.1\!<\!r_e\!<\!2.8$ kpc and average effective surface brightness values $22.0\!<\!μ_i\!<\!28.0$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. We confirm the existence of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the …
In this paper, we present the first results from the Renaissance Simulations, a suite of extremely high-resolution and physics-rich AMR calculations of high redshift galaxy formation performed on the Blue Waters supercomputer. These simulations contain hundreds of well-resolved galaxies at $z \sim 25-8$, and make several novel, testable predictions. Most critically, we show that the ultraviolet luminosity function of our simulated galaxies is consistent with observations of high-z galaxy populations at the bright end of the luminosity function (M$_{1600} \leq -17$), but at lower luminosities i…
We study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum slopes ($β$) of galaxies at redshifts $8 < z < 16$, using a combination of JWST ERO and ERS NIRcam imaging and ground-based near-infrared imaging of the COSMOS field. The combination of JWST and ground-based imaging provides a wide baseline in both redshift and absolute UV magnitude ($-22.6 < M_{\rm UV} < 17.9$), sufficient to allow a meaningful comparison to previous results at lower redshift. Using a power-law fitting technique, we find that our full sample (median $M_{\rm UV}=-19.3\pm 1.3$) returns an inverse-variance weighted mean value of…
Morphologies of Galaxies at $z \gtrsim 9$ Uncovered by JWST/NIRCam Imaging: Cosmic Size Evolution and an Identification of an Extremely Compact Bright Galaxy at $z\sim 12$
We present deep H-band surface photometry and analysis of 40 Local Volume galaxies, a sample primarily composed of dwarf irregulars in the Cen A group, obtained using the IRIS2 detector at the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope. We probe to a surface brightness of ~25 mag arcsec$^{-2}$, reaching a 40 times lower stellar density than the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). Employing extremely careful and rigorous cleaning techniques to remove contaminating sources, we perform surface photometry on 33 detected galaxies deriving the observed total magnitude, effective surface brightness and best fitt…
We present first results from Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations at the Very Large Telescope in the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF), a $\approx 1.2\times 1.4$ arcmin$^2$ region for which we are collecting $\approx$200 hours of integral field spectroscopy. The $\approx 40$-hour observation completed to date reveals the presence of a group of three Ly$α$ nebulae associated with a bright quasar pair at $z\simeq3.23$ with projected separation of $\approx 500\rm~kpc$. Two of the nebulae are physically associated with the quasars which are likely powering the Ly$α$ emission, and exte…
The bright central galaxies (BCGs) dominate the inner portion of the diffuse cluster light, but it is still unclear where the intracluster light (ICL) takes over. To investigate the BCG-ICL transition, we stack the images of ${\sim}3000$ clusters between $0.2{<}z{<}0.3$ in the SDSS $gri$ bands, and measure their BCG+ICL stellar surface mass profile $Σ_{*}^{\texttt{B+I}}$ down to $3{\times}10^4\,M_{\odot}/\mathrm{kpc}^{2}$ at $R{\simeq}1\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ (${\sim}32$ mag/arcsec$^2$ in the $r$-band). We develop a physically-motivated method to decompose $Σ_{*}^{\texttt{B+I}}$ into three components,…
Pushing JWST to the extremes: search and scrutiny of bright galaxy candidates at z$\simeq$15-30

MUSE observations of the cluster of galaxies CGr32 ($M_{200}$ $\simeq$ 2 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) at $z$ = 0.73 reveal the presence of two massive star forming galaxies with extended tails of diffuse gas detected in the [OII]$λλ$3727-3729 A emission-line doublet. The tails, which have a cometary shape with a typical surface brightness of a few 10$^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$, extend up to $\simeq$ 100 kpc (projected distance) from the galaxy discs and are not associated to any stellar component. All this observational evidence suggests that the gas has been removed durin…
