Nearly all current simulations predict that outcomes of the star formation process, such as the fraction of stars that form in bound clusters (Gamma), depend on the intensity of star formation activity (SigmaSFR) in the host galaxy. The exact shape and strength of the predicted correlations, however, vary from simulation to simulation. Observational results also remain unclear at this time, because most works have mixed estimates made from very young clusters for galaxies with higher SigmaSFR with those from older clusters for galaxies with lower SigmaSFR. The three blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies ESO185-IG13, ESO338-IG04, and Haro11 have played a central role on the observational side because they have some of the highest known SigmaSFR and published values of Gamma. We present new estimates of Gamma for these BCDs in three age intervals (1-10 Myr, 10-100 Myr, 100-400 Myr), based on age-dating which includes Halpha photometry to better discriminate between clusters younger and older than ~10 Myr. We find significantly lower values for Gamma (1-10 Myr) than published previously. The likely reason for the discrepancy is that previous estimates appear to be based on age-reddening results that underestimated ages and overestimated reddening for many clusters, artificially boosting Gamma (1-10 Myr). We also find that fewer stars remain in clusters over time, with ~15-39% in 1-10 Myr, ~5-7% in 10-100 Myr, and ~1-2% in 100-400 Myr clusters. We find no evidence that Gamma increases with SigmaSFR. These results imply that cluster formation efficiency does not vary with star formation intensity in the host galaxy. If confirmed, our results will help guide future assumptions in galaxy-scale simulations of cluster formation and evolution.
Understanding how the birthplace of stars affects planet-forming discs is important for a comprehensive theory of planet formation. Most stars are born in dense star-forming regions where the external influence of other stars, particularly the most massive stars, will affect the survival and enrichment of their planet-forming discs. Simulations suggest that stellar dynamics play a central role in regulating how external feedback affects discs, but comparing models to observations requires an estimate of the initial stellar density in star-forming regions. Structural analyses constrain the amou…
The attenuation of light in star forming galaxies is correlated with a multitude of physical parameters including star formation rate, metallicity and total dust content. This variation in attenuation is even more prevalent on the kiloparsec scale, which is relevant to many current spectroscopic integral field unit surveys. To understand the cause of this variation, we present and analyse \textit{Swift}/UVOT near-UV (NUV) images and SDSS/MaNGA emission-line maps of 29 nearby ($z<0.084$) star forming galaxies. We resolve kiloparsec-sized star forming regions within the galaxies and compare thei…
We present an ultra-violet study of two nearby dwarf irregular galaxies WLM and IC~2574, using the Far-UV and Near-UV data from the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We used the F148W band Far-UV images and identified 180 and 782 young star-forming clumps in WLM and IC~2574, respectively. The identified clumps have sizes between 7 - 30 pc in WLM and 26 - 150 pc in IC~2574. We noticed more prominent hierarchical splitting in the structure of star-forming regions at different flux levels in IC~2574 than WLM. We found that the majority of the clumps have elongated shapes in the sky plane wit…
We investigate the specific angular momentum (sAM) $ j(<r)$ profiles of intermediate redshift ($0.4<z<1.4$) star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the relatively unexplored regime of low masses (down to $M_\star\sim 10^8$M$_{\odot}$), and small sizes (down to $R_{\rm e}\sim 1.5$ kpc) and characterize the sAM scaling relation and its redshift evolution. We have developed a 3D methodology to constrain sAM profiles of the star-forming gas using a forward modeling approach with \galpak{} that incorporates the effects of beam smearing, yielding the intrinsic morpho-kinematic properties even with limited s…
A rich spectroscopic census of members of the local massive cluster Abell 2029 includes 1215 members of A2029 and its two infalling groups, A2033 and a Southern Infalling Group (SIG). The two infalling groups are identified in spectroscopic, X-ray and weak lensing maps. We identify active galactic nuclei (AGN), star-forming galaxies, E+A galaxies, and quiescent galaxies based on the spectroscopy. The fractions of AGN and post-starburst E+A galaxies in A2029 are similar to those of other clusters. We derive the stellar mass ($M_{*}$)-metallicity of A2029 based on 227 star-forming members; A2029…
Dust permeates the interstellar medium, reddening and polarizing background starlight, but dust properties vary with local environment. In order to characterize dust in a highly irradiated diffuse cloud, we measure the reddening and optical polarization towards 27 stars surrounding the mid-latitude $b$=$+$24$^{\circ}$ O9.2IV star $ζ$ Ophiuchi, using new optical spectroscopy and polarimetry. We incrementally deredden and depolarize with distance, allowing us to distinguish dust components along these sightlines. The data indicate three distinct dust populations: a foreground component character…
We develop a novel approach in exploring the joint dependence of halo bias on multiple halo properties using Gaussian process regression. Using a $Λ$CDM $N$-body simulation, we carry out a comprehensive study of the joint bias dependence on halo structure, formation history and environment. We show that the bias is a multivariate function of halo properties that falls into three regimes. For massive haloes, halo mass explains the majority of bias variation. For early-forming haloes, bias depends sensitively on the recent mass accretion history. For low-mass and late-forming haloes, bias depend…
Recently, Kojima and co-authors have reported a record low oxygen abundance, 12+logO/H=6.90+/-0.03 in the low-mass star-forming galaxy HSC J1631+4426. This exceptionally low oxygen abundance was obtained by the direct method, using the [OIII]4363 emission line. However, using the strong-line method by Izotov et al. (2019b), these authors have derived a significantly higher metallicity 12+logO/H=7.175+/-0.005. To clarify the situation, we have obtained new observations of HSC J1631+4426 with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT)/Multi-Object Dual Spectrograph (MODS). We have derived a higher oxyg…
Using the \prospector\ spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code, we analyze the properties of 19 Extreme Emission Line Galaxies (EELGs) identified in the bluest composite SED in the \zfourge\ survey at $2.5 \leq z \leq 4$. \prospector\ includes a physical model for nebular emission and returns probability distributions for stellar mass, stellar metallicity, dust attenuation, and nonparametric star formation history (SFH). The EELGs show evidence for a starburst in the most recent 50 Myr, with the median EELG having a specific star formation rate (sSFR) of 4.6 Gyr$^{-1}$ and forming 15\%…

In addition to occupying the extreme, diffuse tail of the dwarf galaxy population, Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) are themselves a key laboratory in which to study star formation in extreme low-density environments. In the second paper of this series, we compare the spatially resolved star formation activity of 22 HI-selected UDGs and 21 "normal" dwarf galaxies within 120 Mpc to predictions within the pressure-regulated, feedback-modulated (PRFM) theory of star formation. To do so, we employ a joint SED fitting method that allows us to estimate star formation rate and stellar mass surface densi…
We conduct for the first time a theoretical investigation of the mid-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) produced by dust heated by an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and an extreme starburst. These models employ an integrated modeling approach using photoionization and stellar population synthesis models in which both the line and emergent continuum is predicted from gas exposed to the ionizing radiation from a young starburst and an AGN. In this work, we focus on the infrared colors from the {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer}, predicting the dependence of the colors on the input…
Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies are both extreme products of galaxy evolution and extreme environments in which to test our understanding of star formation. In this work, we contrast the spatially resolved star formation activity of a sample of 22 HI-selected UDGs and 35 low-mass galaxies from the NASA Sloan Atlas (NSA) within 120 Mpc. We employ a new joint SED fitting method to compute star formation rate and stellar mass surface density maps that leverage the high spatial resolution optical imaging data of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) and the UV coverage of GALEX, along wi…
Using the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT)/Multi-Object Dual Spectrograph (MODS), we have obtained optical spectroscopy of one of the most metal-poor dwarf star-forming galaxies (SFG) in the local Universe, J2229+2725. This galaxy with a redshift z=0.0762 was selected from the Data Release 16 (DR16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Its properties derived from the LBT observations are most extreme among SFGs in several ways. Its oxygen abundance 12+logO/H=7.085+/-0.031 is among the lowest ever observed for a SFG. With its very low metallicity, an absolute magnitude Mg=-16.39 mag, a low st…
The Milky Way's stellar disk exhibits a bimodality in the [Fe/H] vs. [$α$/Fe] plane, showing a distinct high-$α$ and low-$α$ sequence whose origin is still under debate. We examine the [Fe/H]-[$α$/Fe] abundance plane in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way like galaxies from the NIHAO-UHD project and show that the bimodal $α$-sequence is a generic consequence of a gas-rich merger at some time in the Galaxy's evolution. The high-$α$ sequence evolves first in the early galaxies, extending to high metallicities, while it is the low-$α$ sequence that is formed after the gas-rich me…
The PASSAGES ($Planck$ All-Sky Survey to Analyze Gravitationally-lensed Extreme Starbursts) collaboration has recently defined a sample of 30 gravitationally-lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). These rare, submillimeter-selected objects enable high-resolution views of the most extreme sites of star formation in galaxies at Cosmic Noon. Here, we present the first major compilation of strong lensing analyses using LENSTOOL for PASSAGES, including 15 objects spanning $z=1.1-3.3$, using complementary information from $0.6^{\prime\prime}$-resolution 1 mm Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimet…
A search for High Mass Stars Forming in Isolation using CORNISH & ATLASGAL
We present a sample of low-redshift (z<0.133) candidates for extremely low-metallicity star-forming galaxies with oxygen abundances 12+logO/H<7.4 selected from the Data Release 14 (DR14) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Three methods are used to derive their oxygen abundances. Among these methods two are based on strong [OII]3727, [OIII]4959, and [OIII]5007 emission lines, which we call strong-line and semi-empirical methods. These were applied for all galaxies. We have developed one of these methods, the strong-line method, in this paper. This method is specifically focused on the accu…
Recent work has suggested extreme [OIII] emitting star-forming galaxies are important to reionization. Relatedly, [OIII]/[OII] has been put forward as an indirect estimator of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction ($f_{esc}$) at $z\gtrsim4.5$ when the opaque IGM renders LyC photons unobservable. Using deep archival U-band (VLT/VIMOS) imaging of a recently confirmed overdensity at $z\sim3.5$ we calculate tight constraints on $f_{esc}$ for a sample (N=73) dominated by extreme [OIII] emitters. We find no Lyman Continuum signal ($f_{esc}^{rel} < 6.3^{+0.7}_{-0.7} \%$ at $1σ$) in a deep U-band …
We have obtained optical spectroscopy of one of the most metal-poor dwarf star-forming galaxies (SFG) in the local Universe, J1234+3901, with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT)/Multi-Object Dual Spectrograph (MODS). This blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy with a redshift z=0.133 was selected from the Data Release 14 (DR14) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Its properties are extreme in many ways. Its oxygen abundance 12 + log O/H = 7.035+/-0.026 is among the lowest ever observed for a SFG. Its absolute magnitude Mg = -17.35 mag makes it the brightest galaxy among the known BCDs with 12 + l…
Measurements of the galaxy UV luminosity function at z>6 suggest that young stars hosted in low-mass star-forming galaxies produced the bulk of hydrogen-ionizing photons necessary to reionize the intergalactic medium (IGM) by redshift z~6. Whether star-forming galaxies dominated cosmic reionization, however, also depends on their stellar populations and interstellar medium properties, which set, among other things, the production rate of H-ionizing photons, $ξ_\text{ion}^\star$, and the fraction of these escaping into the IGM. Given the difficulty of constraining with existing observatories th…
We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of eight compact star-forming galaxies at redshifts z=0.02811-0.06540, with low oxygen abundances 12+log(O/H)=7.43-7.82 and extremely high emission-line flux ratios O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727~22-39, aiming to study the properties of Ly-alpha emission in such conditions. We find a diversity in Ly-alpha properties. In five galaxies Ly-alpha emission line is strong, with equivalent width (EW) in the range 45-190A. In the remaining galaxies, weak Ly-alpha emission with EW(Ly-alpha)~2-7A is superposed on a…
As deep spectroscopic campaigns extend to higher redshifts and lower stellar masses, the interpretation of galaxy spectra depends increasingly upon models for very young stellar populations. Here we present new HST/COS ultraviolet spectroscopy of seven nearby ($<120$ Mpc) star-forming regions hosting very young stellar populations ($\sim$ 4-20 Myr) with optical Wolf-Rayet stellar wind signatures, ideal laboratories in which to test these stellar models. We detect nebular C III] in all seven, but at equivalent widths uniformly $< 10$ Å. This suggests that even for very young stellar populations…
We present a study of the [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 (O32) ratios of star-forming galaxies drawn from MUSE data spanning a redshift range 0.28<z<0.85. Recently discovered Lyman continuum (LyC) emitters have extremely high oxygen line ratios: O32>4. Here we aim to understand the properties and the occurrences of galaxies with such high line ratios. Combining data from several MUSE GTO programmes, we select a population of star-forming galaxies with bright emission lines, from which we draw 406 galaxies for our analysis based on their position in the z-dependent star formation rate (SFR) - stellar mas…
We present a detailed study of a high-redshift iron low-ionization broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) quasar (SDSS1214 at $z = 1.046$), including new interferometric $^{12}$CO $J$=2-1 observations, optical through far-infrared photometry, and mid-infrared spectroscopy. The CO line is well-fit by a single Gaussian centered 40 kms$^{-1}$ away from the systemic velocity and implies a total molecular gas mass of $M_\textrm{gas} = 7.3 \times 10^{10} \textrm{M}_\odot$. The infrared SED requires three components: an active galactic nucleus (AGN) torus, an AGN polar dust component, and a starburst. The s…
The first stages of planet formation usually occur when the host star is still in a (relatively) dense star-forming region, where the effects of the external environment may be important for understanding the outcome of the planet formation process. In particular, star-forming regions that contain massive stars have strong far ultraviolet (FUV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation fields, which can induce mass-loss from protoplanetary discs due to photoevaporation. In this paper we present a parameter-space study of the expected FUV and EUV fields in N-body simulations of star-forming regio…

LBT observations of compact star-forming galaxies with extremely high [OIII]/[OII] flux ratios: HeI emission-line ratios as diagnostics of Lyman continuum leakage
We assemble an unbiased sample of 29 galaxies with [O II] $λ3727$ and/or [O III] $λ5007$ detections at $z < 0.15$ from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) Pilot Survey (HPS). HPS finds galaxies without pre-selection based on their detected emission lines via integral field spectroscopy. Sixteen of these objects were followed up with the second-generation, low resolution spectrograph (LRS2) on the upgraded Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Oxygen abundances were then derived via strong emission lines using a Bayesian approach. We find most of the galaxies fall along the mass-metall…
BOSS-EUVLG1 is the most ultraviolet (UV) and Ly$α$ luminous galaxy detected so far in the Universe, going through a very active starburst phase, and forming stars at a rate (SFR) of 955 $\pm$ 118 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We report the detection of a broad H$α$ component carrying 25% of the total H$α$ flux. The broad H$α$ line traces a fast and massive ionized gas outflow characterized by a total mass, $\log(M_{out}[M_{\odot}]),$ of 7.94 $\pm$ 0.15, an outflowing velocity (V$_{out}$) of 573 $\pm$ 151 km s$^{-1}$, and an outflowing mass rate ($\dot{M}_{out}$) of 44 $\pm$ 20 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. …

Green Peas are a class of extreme star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts, originally discovered via color-selection using multi-filter, wide-field survey imaging data (Cardamone et al. 2009). They are commonly thought of as being analogs of high-redshift Ly$α$-emitting galaxies. The defining characteristic of Green Pea galaxies is a high-excitation nebular spectrum with very large equivalent width lines, leading to the recognition that Green Pea-like galaxies can also be identified in samples of emission-line galaxies. Here we compare the properties a sample of [O III]-selected star-f…
