As deep spectroscopic campaigns extend to higher redshifts and lower stellar masses, the interpretation of galaxy spectra depends increasingly upon models for very young stellar populations. Here we present new HST/COS ultraviolet spectroscopy of seven nearby ($<120$ Mpc) star-forming regions hosting very young stellar populations ($\sim$ 4-20 Myr) with optical Wolf-Rayet stellar wind signatures, ideal laboratories in which to test these stellar models. We detect nebular C III] in all seven, but at equivalent widths uniformly $< 10$ Å. This suggests that even for very young stellar populations, the highest equivalent width C III] emission at $\geq 15$ Å is reserved for inefficiently-cooled gas at metallicities at or below that of the SMC. The spectra also reveal strong C IV P-Cygni profiles and broad He II emission formed in the winds of massive stars, including some of the most prominent He II stellar wind lines ever detected in integrated spectra. We find that the latest stellar population synthesis prescriptions with improved treatment of massive stars nearly reproduce the entire range of stellar He II wind strengths observed here. However, we find that these models cannot simultaneously match the strongest wind features alongside the optical nebular line constraints. This discrepancy can be naturally explained by an overabundance of very massive stars produced by a high incidence of binary mass transfer and mergers occurring on short $\lesssim 10$ Myr timescales, suggesting these processes may be crucial for understanding the highest-sSFR galaxies in the early Universe. Reproducing both the stellar and nebular light of young systems such as these will be a crucial benchmark for the next generation of stellar population synthesis models.
The ultraviolet catalog of nearby galaxies made by \citet{Gil07} presents the integrated photometry and surface brightness profiles for 1034 nearby galaxies observed by \textit{Galaxy Evolution Explorer} (\textit{GALEX}). We provide an updated catalog of 4138 nearby galaxies based on the latest Genral Release (GR6/GR7) of \textit{GALEX}. These galaxies are selected from HyperLeda with apparent diameter larger than 1{\arcmin}. From the surface brightness profiles accurately measured with the deep NUV and FUV images, we have calculated asymptotic magnitudes, aperture (D25) magnitudes, colors, st…
In order to examine their relation to the host galaxy, the extraplanar dust of six nearby galaxies are modeled, employing a three dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. The targets are from the highly-inclined galaxies that show dust-scattered ultraviolet halos, and the archival Galaxy Evolution Explorer FUV band images were fitted with the model. The observed images are in general well reproduced by two dust layers and one light-source layer, whose vertical and radial distributions have exponential profiles. We obtained several important physical parameters, such as star formation r…
This is the first in a series of three papers describing a project with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope to measure abundances of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) in a sample of 9 nearby star-forming galaxies. The goal is to assess the (in)homogeneities of the multiphase ISM in galaxies where the bulk of metals can be hidden in the neutral phase, yet the metallicity is inferred from the ionized gas in the HII regions. The sample, spanning a wide range in physical properties, is to date the best suited to investigate the metallicity behavior of the neutral gas …
Nearby dwarf galaxies provide a unique laboratory in which to test stellar population models below $Z_\odot/2$. Such tests are particularly important for interpreting the surprising high-ionization UV line emission detected at $z>6$ in recent years. We present HST/COS ultraviolet spectra of ten nearby metal-poor star-forming galaxies selected to show He II emission in SDSS optical spectra. The targets span nearly a dex in gas-phase oxygen abundance ($7.8<12+\log\mathrm{O/H}<8.5$) and present uniformly large specific star formation rates (sSFR $\sim 10^2$ $\mathrm{Gyr}^{-1}$). The UV spectra co…
We present the first observations of diffuse radiation in the far ultraviolet (1000 -- 1150 Å) from the Large Magellanic Cloud based on observations made with the {\it Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer}. The fraction of the total radiation in the field emitted as diffuse radiation is typically 5 -- 20\% with a high of 45\% near N70 where there are few exciting stars, indicating that much of the emission is not due to nearby stars. Much less light is scattered in the far ultraviolet than at longer wavelengths with the stellar radiation going into heating the interstellar dust.
Spectroscopic observations of a massive star formation in the ultraviolet and their interpretation are reviewed. After a brief historical retrospective, two well-studied resolved star clusters and the surrounding H II regions are introduced: NGC 2070 in the Large Magellanic Cloud and NGC 604 in M33. These regions serve as a training set for studies of more distant clusters, which can no longer be resolved into individual stars. Observations of recently formed star clusters and extended regions in star-forming galaxies in the nearby universe beyond the Local Group are presented. Their interpret…
Ultraviolet (UV) observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are crucial for constraining the properties of their progenitor systems. Theoretical studies predicted that the UV spectra, which probe the outermost layers of a SN, should be sensitive to the metal content of the progenitor. Using the largest SN Ia UV (lambda<2900 A) spectroscopic sample obtained from Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, we investigate the dependence of UV spectra on metallicity. For the first time, our results reveal a correlation (~2 sigma) between SN Ia UV flux and host-galaxy metallicities, with SNe in more metal-ric…
We have discovered ultraviolet halos extending as far as 5° around four (of six) bright UV stars using data from the GALEX satellite. These halos are due to the scattering of the starlight from nearby thin, foreground dust clouds. We have placed limits of 0.58 $\pm$ 0.12 and 0.72 $\pm$ 0.06 on the phase function asymmetry factor (g) and limits on the albedo of 0.10 $\pm$ 0.05 and 0.26 $\pm$ 0.10 in the FUV (1521 Å) and NUV (2320 Å) bands, respectively. We suggest that these halos are a common feature around bright stars and may be used to explore the scattering function of interstellar grains …
We present new Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope observations of eight optically selected broad-line AGN candidates in nearby dwarf galaxies ($z<0.055$). Including archival Chandra observations of three additional sources, our sample contains all ten galaxies from Reines et al. (2013) with both broad H$α$ emission and narrow-line AGN ratios (6 AGNs, 4 Composites), as well as one low-metallicity dwarf galaxy with broad H$α$ and narrow-line ratios characteristic of star formation. All eleven galaxies are detected in X-rays. Nuclear X-ray luminosities range from $L_{0.5-7 \rm{k…
The ultraviolet (UV) polarization spectrum of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) is poorly known. The Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment and a handful of instruments on board the Hubble Space Telescope were able to probe the near- and mid-UV polarization of nearby AGN, but the far-UV band (from 1200 angs down to the Lyman limit at 912 angs) remains completely uncharted. In addition, the linewidth resolution of previous observations was at best 1.89 angs. Such a resolution is not sufficient to probe in detail quantum mechanical effects, synchrotron and cyclotron processes, scat…
Metal-poor nearby galaxies hosting massive stars have a fundamental role to play in our understanding of both high-redshift galaxies and low metallicity stellar populations. But while much attention has been focused on their bright nebular gas emission, the massive stars that power it remain challenging to constrain. Here we present exceptionally deep Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectra targeting six galaxies that power strong nebular C IV emission approaching that encountered at $z>6$. We find that the strength and spectral profile of the nebular C IV in these new spectra follow a sequ…

We compare star formation in the inner and outer disks of 11 dwarf Irregular galaxies (dIm) within 3.6 Mpc. The regions are identified on GALEX near-UV images, and modeled with UV, optical, and near-IR colors to determine masses and ages. A few galaxies have made 10^5-10^6 Msun complexes in a starburst phase, while others have not formed clusters in the last 50 Myrs. The maximum region mass correlates with the number of regions as expected from the size-of-sample effect. We find no radial gradients in region masses and ages, even beyond the realm of Halpha emission, although there is an expone…
We have examined polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) excitation in a sample of 25 nearby face-on spiral galaxies using the ratio of mid-infrared PAH emission to dust mass. Within 11 of the galaxies, we found that the PAH excitation was straightforwardly linked to ultraviolet or mid-infrared star formation tracers, which, along with other results studying the relation of PAH emission to star formation, indicates that the PAHs are most strongly excited in dusty shells around the star forming regions. Within another 5 galaxies, the PAH emission is enhanced around star forming regions only at sp…

We present the emission Halpha line images for 40 galaxies of the Local Volume based on the observations at the 6-meter BTA telescope. Among them there are eight satellites of the Milky Way and Andromeda M31 as well as two companions to M51. The measured Halpha fluxes of the galaxies are used to determine their integral (SFR) and specific (sSFR) star formation rates. The values of Log(sSFR) for the observed galaxies lie in the range of (-9, -14)/yr. A comparison of SFR estimates derived from the Halpha flux and from the ultraviolet FUV flux yields evidence that two blue compact galaxies MRK 47…
We examine and quantify how hybrid (e.g., UV+IR) star formation rate (SFR) estimators and the $A_{\rm FUV}$-$β$ relation depend on inclination for disk-dominated galaxies using spectral energy distribution modeling that utilizes the inclination-dependent attenuation curves described in Doore et al. We perform this analysis on a sample of 133 disk-dominated galaxies from the CANDELS fields and 18 disk galaxies from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey and Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: A Far-Infrared Survey with Herschel samples. We find that both the hybrid SFR estimators and the $A_{…

We present narrowband H$α$ imaging of nearby Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies known as a subset of starburst galaxies. The H$α$ images have been used to show morphology of star-forming regions in galaxies, which leads to speculate that the studied galaxies have most likely experienced merger or interaction with low luminous dwarf galaxies or \HI clouds. We further derive the H$α$ based star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies using our H$α$ observations. These SFRs are well-correlated with SFRs derived using other indicators at far-ultraviolet, far-infrared and 1.4-GHz radio wavebands. It is noticed th…
We study spatially resolved properties (on spatial scales of $\sim 1-2$ kpc out to at least $3$ effective radii) of the stars, dust, and gas in ten nearby spiral galaxies. The properties of the stellar population and dust are derived by fitting the spatially resolved spectral energy distribution (SED) with more than 20 photometric bands ranging from far-ultraviolet to far-infrared. Our newly developed software piXedfit performs point spread function matching of images, pixel binning, and models the stellar light, dust attenuation, dust emission, and emission from a dusty torus heated by an act…
We present preliminary results of deep echelle spectrophotometry of a sample of HII regions along the disk of the Scd galaxy NGC300 obtained with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) with the aim of detect and measure very faint OII and CII permitted lines. We focus this study on the C and O abundances obtained from faint optical recombination lines (ORLs) instead of the most commonly used collisionally excited lines (CELs). We have derived the ionic abundances of C++ from the CII 4267 angstrom RL and O++ from the multiplet 1 of OII around 46…
We have analyzed FUSE, COS, GHRS, and Keck HIRES spectra of the UV-bright star Barnard 29 in M13 (NGC 6205). By comparing the photospheric abundances derived from multiple ionization states of C, N, O, Si, and S, we infer an effective temperature T_eff = 21,400 +/- 400 K. Balmer-line fits yield a surface gravity log g = 3.10 +/- 0.03. We derive photospheric abundances of He, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Ge. Barnard 29 exhibits an abundance pattern typical of the first-generation stars in M13, enhanced in oxygen and depleted in aluminum. An underabundance of C and an o…
We use the GALEX data of the GUViCS survey to construct the NUV luminosity function of the Virgo cluster over ~ 300 deg.2, an area covering the cluster and its surrounding regions up to ~ 1.8 virial radii. The NUV luminosity function is also determined for galaxies of different morphological type and NUV-i colour, and for the different substructures within the cluster. These luminosity functions are robust vs. statistical corrections since based on a sample of 833 galaxies mainly identified as cluster members with spectroscopic redshift (808) or high-quality optical scaling relations (10). We …
We present calibrations for star formation rate indicators in the ultraviolet, mid-infrared and radio continuum bands, including one of the first direct calibrations of 150 MHz as a star formation rate indicator. Our calibrations utilize 66 nearby star forming galaxies with Balmer decrement corrected H-alpha luminosities, which span 5 orders of magnitude in star formation rate and have absolute magnitudes of -24<M_r<-12. Most of our photometry and spectrophotometry is measured from the same region of each galaxy, and our spectrophotometry has been validated with SDSS photometry, so our random …
The star formation rates for the 230 nearest Markarian galaxies with radial velocities V_LG<3500 km/s have been determined from their far ultraviolet fluxes obtained with the GALEX satellite. We briefly discuss the observed relationship between the star formation rate and other integral parameters of these galaxies: stellar mass, hydrogen mass, morphological type, and activity index. On the average, the Markarian galaxies have reserves of gas that are a factor of two smaller than those of galaxies in the field of the same stellar mass and type. Despite their elevated activity, the specific rat…
We present a study of quasars with very redward asymmetric (RA) ultraviolet (UV) broad emission lines (BELs). An excess of redshifted emission has been previously shown to occur in the BELs of radio loud quasars and is most extreme in certain blazars. Paradoxically, blazars are objects that are characterized by a highly relativistic blue-shifted outflow towards Earth. We show that the red emitting gas resides in a very broad component (VBC) that is typical of Population B quasars that are defined by a wide H$β$ BEL profile. Empirically, we find that RA BEL blazars have both low Eddington rates…
New deep optical and near-infrared imaging is combined with archival ultraviolet and infrared data for fifteen nearby galaxies mapped in the Spitzer Extended Disk Galaxy Exploration Science survey. These images are particularly deep and thus excellent for studying the low surface brightness outskirts of these disk-dominated galaxies with stellar masses ranging between 10^8 and 10^11 Msun. The spectral energy distributions derived from this dataset are modeled to investigate the radial variations in the galaxy colors and star formation histories. Taken as a whole, the sample shows bluer and you…
Studying star formation beyond the optical radius of galaxies allows us to test empirical relations in extreme conditions with low average gas density and low molecular fraction. Previous studies discovered galaxies with extended ultraviolet (XUV) disks, which often contain star forming regions with lower Halpha-to-far-UV (FUV) flux ratios compared to inner disk star forming regions. However, most previous studies lack measurements of molecular gas, which is presumably the component of the interstellar medium out of which stars form. We analyzed published CO measurements and upper limits for f…
We present ultraviolet (UV) follow-up of a sample of potential dwarf galaxy candidates selected for their neutral hydrogen (HI) properties, taking advantage of the low UV background seen by the GALEX satellite and its large and publicly available imaging footprint. The HI clouds, which are drawn from published GALFA-HI and ALFALFA HI survey compact cloud catalogs, are selected to be galaxy candidates based on their spatial compactness and non-association with known high-velocity cloud complexes or Galactic HI emission. Based on a comparison of their UV characteristics to those of known dwarf g…

One of the fundamental goals of modern astrophysics is to estimate the physical parameters of galaxies. We present a hierarchical Bayesian model to compute age maps from images in the \Ha\ line (taken with Taurus Tunable Filter, TTF), ultraviolet band (GALEX far UV, FUV), and infrared bands (Spitzer 24, 70, and 160 $μ$m). We present the burst ages for young stellar populations in a sample of nearby and nearly face-on galaxies. The \Ha\ to FUV flux ratio is a good relative indicator of the very recent star formation history (SFH). As a nascent star-forming region evolves, the \Ha\ line emission…
We perform a large set of cosmological simulations of early structure formation and follow the formation and evolution of 1540 star-forming gas clouds to derive the mass distribution of primordial stars. The star formation in our cosmological simulations is characterized by two distinct populations, the so-called Population III.1 stars and primordial stars formed under the influence of far ultraviolet (FUV) radiation (Population III.2D stars). In this work, we determine the stellar masses by using the dependences on the physical properties of star-forming cloud and/or the external photodissoci…
Using Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC data we present the photometry and spatial distribution of resolved stellar populations of four fields within the extended ultraviolet disk (XUV disk) of M83. These observations show a clumpy distribution of main-sequence stars and a mostly smooth distribution of red giant branch stars. We constrain the upper-end of the initial mass function (IMF) in the outer disk using the detected population of main-sequence stars and an assumed constant star formation rate (SFR) over the last 300 Myr. By comparing the observed main-sequence luminosity function to simula…
We present multi-wavelength global star formation rate (SFR) estimates for 326 galaxies from the Star Formation Reference Survey (SFRS) in order to determine the mutual scatter and range of validity of different indicators. The widely used empirical SFR recipes based on 1.4 GHz continuum, 8.0 $μ$m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and a combination of far-infrared (FIR) plus ultraviolet (UV) emission are mutually consistent with scatter of $\raise{-0.8ex}\stackrel{\textstyle <}{\sim }$0.3 dex. The scatter is even smaller, $\raise{-0.8ex}\stackrel{\textstyle <}{\sim }$0.24 dex, in the int…
We present a far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) imaging study of recent star formation in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2336 using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). NGC 2336 is nearly face-on in morphology and has a multi-armed, branching spiral structure which is associated with star forming regions distributed mainly along the spiral arms and the co-rotation ring around the bar. We have identified 72 star forming knots in the disk, of which only two are in the inter-arm regions and 6 in the co-rotation ring. We have tabulated their positions and estimated their luminosities, sizes, star f…
Mapping star-formation rates (SFR) within galaxies is key to unveiling their assembly and evolution. Calibrations exist for computing SFR from a combination of ultraviolet and infrared bands for galaxies as integrated systems, but their applicability to sub-galactic (kpc) scales remains largely untested. Here we use integral field spectroscopy of 19 nearby ($D <$ 20 Mpc) galaxies obtained by PHANGS-MUSE to derive accurate Balmer decrements (H$α$/H$β$) and attenuation-corrected H$α$ maps. We combine this information with mid-infrared maps from WISE at 22 $\rm μm$, and ultraviolet maps from GALE…
Almost all chemical elements have been made by nucleosynthetic reactions in various kind of stars and have been accumulated along our cosmic history. Among those elements, the origin of phosphorus is of extreme interest because it is known to be essential for life such as we know on Earth. However, current models of (Galactic) chemical evolution under-predict the phosphorus we observe in our Solar System. Here we report the discovery of 15 phosphorus-rich stars with unusual overabundances of O, Mg, Si, Al, and Ce. Phosphorus-rich stars likely inherit their peculiar chemistry from another nearb…
The correlation between infrared-to-ultraviolet luminosity ratio and ultraviolet color, i.e. the IRX-UV relation, was regarded as a prevalent recipe for correcting extragalactic dust attenuation. Considerable dispersion in this relation discovered for normal galaxies, however, complicates its usability. In order to investigate the cause of the dispersion, in this paper, we select five nearby spiral galaxies, and perform spatially resolved studies on each of the galaxies, with a combination of ultraviolet and infrared imaging data. We measure all positions within each galaxy and divide the extr…
(Abridged) The effective extinction law (attenuation behavior) in galaxies in the emitted ultraviolet is well known only for actively star-forming objects and combines effects of the grain properties, fine structure in the dust distribution, and relative distributions of stars and dust. We use GALEX, XMM Optical Monitor, and HST data to explore the UV attenuation in the outer parts of spiral disks which are backlit by other UV-bright galaxies, starting with candidates provided by Galaxy Zoo participants. Our analysis incorporates galaxy symmetry, using non-overlapping regions of each galaxy to…

We analyze high-resolution ultraviolet spectra of three nearby exoplanet host stars (HD 192310, HD 9826, and HD 206860) to study interstellar properties along their lines of sight and to search for the presence of astrospheric absorption. Using HST/STIS spectra of the Lyman-alpha, Mg II, and Fe II lines, we identify three interstellar velocity components in the lines of sight to each star. We can reliably assign eight of the nine components to partially ionized clouds found by Redfield & Linsky (2008) on the basis of the star's location in Galactic coordinates and agreement of measured radial …
We present the results of an infrared photometric survey performed with NICS@TNG in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4214. We derived accurate integrated JK magnitudes of 10 young massive clusters and compared them with the already available Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet colors. These clusters are located in the combined ultraviolet-infrared colors planes on well defined sequences, whose shapes allow a precise determination of their age. By means of the comparison with suitable stellar evolution models we estimated ages, metallicities, reddening and masses of these clusters. All the analyz…
We combine new sensitive, wide-field CO data from the HERACLES survey with ultraviolet and infrared data from GALEX and Spitzer to compare the surface densities of H2, Sigma_H2, and recent star formation rate, Sigma_SFR, over many thousands of positions in 30 nearby disk galaxies. We more than quadruple the size of the galaxy sample compared to previous work and include targets with a wide range of galaxy properties. Even though the disk galaxies in this study span a wide range of properties, we find a strong and approximately linear correlation between Sigma_SFR and Sigma_H2 at our common res…
The abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in low- and high-metallicity galaxies has been widely discussed since the time when detailed infrared data for extragalactic objects were first obtained. On the scales of entire galaxies, a smaller PAH abundance in lower-metallicity galaxies is often observed. We study this relationship for star-forming regions in nearby galaxies, for a sample containing more than 200 HII complexes, using spatially-resolved observations from the Herschel Space Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope. We use a model for the dust emission to estimate the p…
