Atomic scale localization of Kohn-Sham wavefunction at SiO2/4H-SiC interface under electric field, deviating from envelope function by effective mass approximation
To clarify the cause of the low channel conductivity at the SiO2/4H-SiC interface, the wavefunction at the SiC conduction band minimum was calculated using density functional theory under an applied electric field. We found that the wavefunction for a 4H-SiC (0001) slab tends to be localized at the cubic site closest to the interface. Importantly, because the conduction electrons are distributed closer to the interface (< 5 angstroms) than expected from the effective mass approximation (EMA), they are more frequently scattered by interface defects. This is expected to be the reason why the channel conductivity for the (0001) face is particularly low compared with that for other faces, such as (11-20). The breakdown of the EMA for the (0001) interface is related to the long structural periodicity along the [0001] direction in 4H-SiC crystals.
An exact-exchange spin-current Kohn-Sham method to treat non-collinear spin, magnetic effects, currents, spin-currents, and spin-orbit interactions self-consistently on equal footing is introduced. Spin-orbit interactions are shown to induce spin-currents. Results for silicon and germanium are presented.
A bivariate perspective on Kohn-Sham density functional theory is proposed, treating potential and density as simultaneous independent variables, and used to make fruitful connection between Lieb's rigorous foundational framework and practical Kohn-Sham computation. Support is found for potential-mixing schemes, but not for more standard density-mixing. Under presumably-generic conditions, total energy can be lowered from one iteration to the next. Density, intrinsic and total energy are analytic functions of the noninteracting potential on the open set of potentials having a single isolated g…
We consider the extension of the standard single-determinant Kohn-Sham method to the case of a multiconfiguration trial wavefunction. By applying the rigorous Kohn-Sham method to this case, we construct the proper interacting and non-interacting energy functionals. Following the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem for both energy functionals, we derive the corre-sponding multiconfiguration Kohn-Sham equations. At the end of the analysis we show that, at the ground state, the multiconfiguration wavefunction must collapse into a single-determinant wavefunction, equal to the regular KS wavefunction. We also d…
We formulate a set of equations that facilitate an exact numerical solution of the Kohn-Sham potential for a finite Hubbard chain with nearest neighbour hopping and arbitrary site potentials. The approach relies on a mapping of the non-interacting Kohn-Sham ground state wave function onto the exact interacting system wavefunction and two interconnected self-consistent cycles. The self-consistent cycles are performed within the framework of the Kohn-Sham non-interacting system without any direct reference to the interacting system. The first self-consistent cycle updates the mapping of the non-…
The theory of the macroscopic field appearing in the Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation potential for dielectric materials, as introduced by Gonze, Ghosez and Godby, is reexamined. It is shown that this Kohn-Sham field cannot be determined from a knowledge of the local state of the material (local crystal potential, electric field, and polarization) alone. Instead, it has an intrinsically nonlocal dependence on the global electrostatic configuration. For example, it vanishes in simple transverse configurations of a polarized dielectric, but not in longitudinal ones.
For hybrid systems, such as molecules grafted onto solid surfaces, the calculation of linear response in time dependent density functional theory is slowed down by the need to calculate, in N^4 operations, the susceptibility of N non interacting Kohn-Sham reference electrons. We show how this susceptibility can be calculated N times faster within finite precision. By itself or in combination with previous methods, this should facilitate the calculation of TDDFT response and optical spectra of hybrid systems.
Kohn-Sham orbitals of face-centered cubic lithium fluoride are calculated in prototypical local-density approximations to the exchange-correlation functional. The symmetry analysis of these Bloch functions in a LCAO basis on a path Gamma-X-W-K-Gamma-L-W through the Brillouin Zone is compiled into a list of errata to symmetry labels in the LiF literature, the bulk of which dates back to the 1970's.
We model a Kohn-Sham potential with a discontinuity at integer particle numbers derived from the GLLB approximation of Gritsenko et al. We evaluate the Kohn-Sham gap and the discontinuity to obtain the quasiparticle gap. This allows us to compare the Kohn-Sham gaps to those obtained by accurate many-body perturbation theory based optimized potential methods. In addition, the resulting quasiparticle band gap is compared to experimental gaps. In the GLLB model potential, the exchange-correlation hole is modeled using a GGA energy density and the response of the hole to density variations is eval…
The accurate prediction of electronic response properties of extended molecular systems has been a challenge for conventional, explicit density functionals. We demonstrate that a self-interaction correction implemented rigorously within Kohn-Sham theory via the Optimized Effective Potential (OEP) yields polarizabilities close to the ones from highly accurate wavefunction-based calculations and exceeding the quality of exact-exchange-OEP. The orbital structure obtained with the OEP-SIC functional and approximations to it are discussed.
The liquid regime equation of state of silicon dioxide SiO$_2$ is calculated via quantum molecular dynamics in the density range 5 to 15 g/cc and with temperatures from 0.5 to 100 eV, including the $α$-quartz and stishovite phase Hugoniot curves. Below 8 eV calculations are based on Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT), above 8 eV a new orbital-free DFT formulation, presented here, based on matching Kohn-Sham DFT calculations is employed. Recent experimental shock data is found to be in very good agreement with the current results. Finally both experimental and simulation data are used in…
We describe a rapidly converging algorithm for solving the Kohn--Sham equations and equations of similar structure that appear frequently in calculations of the structure of inhomogeneous electronic many--body systems. The algorithm has its roots the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem and solves directly for the electron density; single--particle wave functions are only used as auxiliary quantities. The method has been implemented for symmetric ``slabs'' of jellium as well as for spherical jellium clusters. Starting from very rough guesses for the initial electron density, convergence is reached within a …
In this work we introduce a new semi-implicit second order correction scheme to the kinetic Kohn-Sham lattice model. The new approach is validated by performing realistic exchange-correlation energy calculations of atoms and dimers of the first two rows of the periodic table finding good agreement with the expected values. Additionally we simulate the ethane molecule where we recover the bond lengths and compare the results with standard methods. Finally, we discuss the current applicability of pseudopotentials within the lattice kinetic Kohn-Sham approach.
By introducing a set of auxiliary equations representing a many-body system, we have derived an extension of the Kohn-Sham scheme for the density functional theory. These equations consist of a Kohn-Sham-type equation determining single-particle orbitals and an eigen-value equation for an effective many-body problem. A variational method similar to the Kohn-Sham technique was utilized to derive effective interactions as well as effective potentials without artificial substitution of a Hubbard-type interaction and a mean-field correction in the energy functional. The second equation is describe…
Absolute binding energies of core electrons in molecules and bulk materials can be efficiently calculated by spin paired density-function theory employing a $Δ$ Kohn-Sham ($Δ$KS) scheme corrected by offsets that are highly transferable. These offsets depend on core level and atomic species and can be determined by comparing $Δ$KS energies to experimental molecular X-ray photoelectron spectra. We demonstrate the correct prediction of absolute and relative binding energies on a wide range of molecules, metals and insulators.
A long-standing puzzle in density-functional theory is the issue of the long-range behavior of the Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation potential at metal surfaces. As an important step towards its solution, it is proved here, through a rigurouos asymptotic analysis and accurate numerical solution of the Optimized-Effective-Potential integral equation, that the Kohn-Sham exact exchange potential decays as $\ln(z)/z$ far into the vacuum side of an {\it extended} semi-infinite jellium. In contrast to the situation in {\it localized} systems, like atoms, molecules, and slabs, this dominant contribution…
We present analytic expressions for the exact density functional and Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian of simple tight-binding models of correlated electrons. These are the single- and double-site versions of the Anderson, Hubbard and spinless fermion models. The exact exchange and correlation potentials are fully non-local. The analytic expressions allow to compare the Kohn-Sham eigenstates of exact density functional theory with the many-body quasi-particle states of these correlated-electron systems. The exact Kohn-Sham spectrum describes correctly many of the non-trivial features of the many-body quas…
A recently developed formalism in which Kohn-Sham calculations are combined with an ``average pair density functional theory'' is reviewed, and some new properties of the effective electron-electron interaction entering in this formalism are derived. A preliminary construction of a fully self-consitent scheme is also presented in this framework.
A sufficiently damped iteration of the Kohn-Sham equations with the exact functional is proven to always converge to the true ground-state density, regardless of the initial density or the strength of electron correlation, for finite Coulomb systems. We numerically implement the exact functional for one-dimensional continuum systems and demonstrate convergence of the damped KS algorithm. More strongly correlated systems converge more slowly.
We present an exact expression for the frequency-dependent Kohn-Sham exact-exchange (EXX) kernel for periodic insulators, which can be employed for the calculation of electronic response properties within time-dependent (TD) density-functional theory. It is shown that the EXX kernel has a long-wavelength divergence behavior of the exact full exchange-correlation kernel and thus rectifies one serious shortcoming of the adiabatic local-density approximation and generalized-gradient approximations kernels. A comparison between the TDEXX and the GW-approximation-Bethe-Salpeter-equation approach is…
We present a rigorous formulation of generalized Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. This provides a straightforward Kohn-Sham description of many-body systems based not only on particle-density but also on any other observable. We illustrate the formalism for the case of a particle-density based description of a nonrelativistic many-electron system. We obtain a simple diagrammatic expansion of the exchange-correlation functional in terms of Kohn-Sham single-particle orbitals and energies; develop systematic Kohn-Sham formulation for one-electron propagators and many-body excitation energies.…
We present a multigrid algorithm for self consistent solution of the Kohn-Sham equations in real space. The entire problem is discretized on a real space mesh with a high order finite difference representation. The resulting self consistent equations are solved on a heirarchy of grids of increasing resolution with a nonlinear Full Approximation Scheme, Full Multigrid algorithm. The self consistency is effected by updates of the Poisson equation and the exchange correlation potential at the end of each eigenfunction correction cycle. The algorithm leads to highly efficient solution of the equat…
This is a brief description of how to derive the local ``atomic'' potentials from the Self-Consistent Atomic Deformation (SCAD) model density function. Particular attention is paid to the spherically averaged case.
We study the question of existence and uniqueness for the finite temperature Kohn-Sham equations. For finite volumes, a unique soluion is shown to exists if the effective potential satisfies a set of general conditions and the coupling constant is smaller than a certain value. For periodic background potentials, this value is proven to be volume independent. In this case, the finite volume solutions are shown to converge as the thermodynamic limit is considered. The local density approximation is shown to satisfy the general conditions mentioned above.
Aiming to combine density functional theory (DFT) and wavefunction theory, we study a mapping from the many-body interacting system to an effectively-interacting Kohn-Sham system instead of a non-interacting Kohn-Sham system. Because a ground state of effectively-interacting systems requires having a solution for the correlated many-body wavefunctions, this provides a natural framework to many-body wavefunction theories such as the configuration interaction and the coupled cluster method in the formal theoretical framework of DFT. Employing simple one-dimensional two-electron systems -- namely…
The polarization-dependence of the exchange-correlation (XC) energy functional of periodic insulators within Kohn-Sham (KS) density-functional theory requires a ${\cal O} (1/q^2)$ divergence in the XC kernel for small vectors q. This behaviour, exemplified for a one-dimensional model semiconductor, is also observed when an insulator happens to be described as a KS metal, or vice-versa. Although it can occur in the exchange-only kernel, it is not found in the usual local, semi-local or even non-local approximations to KS theory. We also show that the test-charge and electronic definitions of th…
We developed a method for calculating solid-state ground-state properties and fundamental band-gaps using a generalized Kohn-Sham approach combining a local density approximation (LDA) functional with a long-range explicit exchange orbital functional. We found that when the range parameter is selected according to the formula γ=A/(\eps_\inf - \eps_\tilde) where \eps_\inf is the optical dielectric constant of the solid and \eps_\tilde= 0.84 and A= 0.216a0^(-1), predictions of the fundamental band-gap close to the experimental values are obtained for a variety of solids of different types. For m…
Exact-exchange self-consistent calculations of the Kohn-Sham potential, surface energy, and work function of jellium slabs are reported in the framework of the Optimized Effective Potential (OEP) scheme of Density Functional Theory. In the vacuum side of the jellium surface and at a distance $z$ that is larger than the slab thickness, the exchange-only Kohn-Sham potential is found to be image-like ($\sim -e^2/z$) but with a coefficient that differs from that of the classical image potential $V_{im}(z)=-e^2/4z$. The three OEP contributions to the surface energy (kinetic, electrostatic, and exch…
Atomic forces formulation based on the Dirac-Kohn-Sham equation and flexible (APW+lo/LAPW)+LO basis set is presented. The formulation was implemented in the code FlapwMBPT and allows a user to easily switch between different basis functions of the augmentation type (APW or LAPW) and between different kind of local orbitals. Similar to the work (Phys.Rev.B 91 (2015) 035105), the implementation takes into account small discontinuities of the wave functions, density, and potential at the muffin-tin sphere boundaries. Applications to the materials with strong relativistic effects, such as $α$-Uran…
We present a general scheme for treating the integrable singular terms within exact exchange (EXX) Kohn-Sham or Hartree-Fock (HF) methods for periodic solids. We show that the singularity corrections for treating these divergencies depend only on the total number and the positions of k-points and on the lattice vectors, in particular the unit cell volume, but not on the particular positions of atoms within the unit cell. The method proposed here to treat the singularities constitutes a stable, simple to implement, and general scheme that can be applied to systems with arbitrary lattice paramet…
Despite of its huge successes in vast amount of applications, the Kohn-Sham scheme of density functional theory (DFT-Kohn-Sham) has not been able to get reliable ionization potentials (IP) for semiconductors, due to self-interaction error in the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximations (GGA), and the difficulty of using asymptotically long-ranged potentials for surface calculations. An approximate optimize effective potential (OEP), the Becke-Johnson'06 exchange, is used to explore the capability of OEP to calculate semiconductor IP with a surface technique sui…
We incorporate in the Kohn-Sham self consistent equation a trained neural-network projection from the charge density distribution to the Hartree-exchange-correlation potential $n \rightarrow V_{\rm Hxc}$ for possible numerical approach to the exact Kohn-Sham scheme. The potential trained through a newly developed scheme enables us to evaluate the total energy without explicitly treating the formula of the exchange-correlation energy. With a case study of a simple model we show that the well-trained neural-network $V_{\rm Hxc}$ achieves accuracy for the charge density and total energy out of th…
We address the problem of bounding rigorously the errors in the numerical solution of the Kohn-Sham equations due to (i) the finiteness of the basis set, (ii) the convergence thresholds in iterative procedures, (iii) the propagation of rounding errors in floating-point arithmetic. In this contribution, we compute fully-guaranteed bounds on the solution of the non-self-consistent equations in the pseudopotential approximation in a plane-wave basis set. We demonstrate our methodology by providing band structure diagrams of silicon annotated with error bars indicating the combined error.
We calculate the imaginary part of the frequency-dependent dielectric function of bulk silicon by applying time-dependent density-functional theory based on the exact-exchange (EXX) Kohn-Sham (KS) band structure and the adiabatic local-density approximation (ALDA) kernel. The position of the E2 absorption peak calculated with the EXX band structure at the independent-particle level is in excellent agreement with experiments, which demonstrates the good quality of EXX `KS quasiparticles'. The excitonic E1 peak that is missing at the independent-particle level remains absent if two-particle inte…
In a recent Letter, Baer et al. present a stochastic method for Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations. Their convergence criterion is the self-averaging total energy per electron, which requires a number of statistical samples that decreases with system size and enables a sublinear-scaling computational cost. However, the electron density, atomic forces, orbital energies, and many other physical quantities do not self-average, and this procedure causes their statistical errors to grow with system size. Convergence of non-self-averaging quantities requires that the number of samples …
We derive and employ a local potential to represent the Fock exchange operator in electronic single-particle equations. This local Fock-exchange (LFX) potential is very similar to the exact exchange (EXX) potential in density functional theory (DFT). The practical software implementation of the two potentials (LFX and EXX) yields robust and accurate results for a variety of systems (semiconductors, transition metal oxides) where Hartree Fock and popular approximations of DFT typically fail. This includes examples traditionally considered qualitatively inaccessible to calculations that omit cor…
Solving the electronic structure from a generalized or standard eigenproblem is often the bottleneck in large scale calculations based on Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. This problem must be addressed by essentially all current electronic structure codes, based on similar matrix expressions, and by high-performance computation. We here present a unified software interface, ELSI, to access different strategies that address the Kohn-Sham eigenvalue problem. Currently supported algorithms include the dense generalized eigensolver library ELPA, the orbital minimization method implemented in l…
We present a broadly-applicable, physically-motivated first-principles approach to determining the fundamental gap of finite systems. The approach is based on using a range-separated hybrid functional within the generalized Kohn-Sham approach to density functional theory. Its key element is the choice of a range-separation parameter such that Koopmans' theorem for both the neutral and anionic is obeyed as closely as possible. We demonstrate the validity, accuracy, and advantages of this approach on first, second, and third row atoms, the oligoacene family of molecules, and a set of hydrogen-pa…
The density-functional approach to quantum electrodynamics is extending traditional density-functional theory and opens the possibility to describe electron-photon interactions in terms of effective Kohn-Sham potentials. In this work, we numerically construct the exact electron-photon Kohn-Sham potentials for a prototype system which consists of a trapped electron coupled to a quantized electromagnetic mode in an optical high-Q cavity. While the effective current that acts on the photons is known explicitly, the exact effective potential that describes the forces exerted by the photons on the …

We present an accurate and efficient formulation of the stress tensor for real-space Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Specifically, while employing a local formulation of the electrostatics, we derive a linear-scaling expression for the stress tensor that is applicable to simulations with unit cells of arbitrary symmetry, semilocal exchange-correlation functionals, and Brillouin zone integration. In particular, we rewrite the contributions arising from the self energy and the nonlocal pseudopotential energy to make them amenable to the real-space finite-difference discre…
We report on a methodology for the treatment of the Coulomb energy and potential in Kohn-Sham density functional theory that is free from self-interaction effects. Specifically, we determine the Coulomb potential given as the functional derivative of the Coulomb energy with respect to the density, where the Coulomb energy is calculated explicitly in terms of the pair density of the Kohn-Sham orbitals. This is accomplished by taking advantage of an orthonormal and complete basis that is an explicit functional of the density that then allows for the functional differentiation of the pair density…
For properties of interacting electron systems, Kohn-Sham (KS) theory is often favored over many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) owing to its low computational cost. However, the exact KS potential can be challenging to approximate, for example in the presence of localized subsystems where the exact potential is known to exhibit pathological features such as spatial steps. By modeling two electrons, each localized in a distinct potential well, we illustrate that the step feature has no counterpart in MBPTs (including Hartree-Fock and GW) or hybrid methods involving Fock exchange because the sp…
Starting from the observation that one of the most successful methods for solving the Kohn-Sham equations for periodic systems -- the plane-wave method -- is a spectral method based on eigenfunction expansion, we formulate a spectral method designed towards solving the Kohn-Sham equations for clusters. This allows for efficient calculation of the electronic structure of clusters (and molecules) with high accuracy and systematic convergence properties without the need for any artificial periodicity. The basis functions in this method form a complete orthonormal set and are expressible in terms …
We construct exact Kohn-Sham potentials for the ensemble density-functional theory (EDFT) from the ground and excited states of helium. The exchange-correlation (XC) potential is compared with the quasi-local-density approximation and both single determinant and symmetry eigenstate ghost-corrected exact exchange approximations. Symmetry eigenstate Hartree-exchange recovers distinctive features of the exact XC potential and is used to calculate the correlation potential. Unlike the exact case, excitation energies calculated from these approximations depend on ensemble weight, and it is shown th…
A numerical scheme for solving the time-evolution of wave functions under the time dependent Kohn-Sham equation has been developed. Since the effective Hamiltonian depends on the wave functions, the wave functions and the effective Hamiltonian should evolve consistently with each other. For this purpose, a self-consistent loop is required at every time-step for solving the time-evolution numerically, which is computationally expensive. However, in this paper, we develop a different approach expressing a formal solution of the TD-KS equation, and prove that it is possible to solve the TD-KS equ…
We present and test a new approximation for the exchange-correlation (xc) energy of Kohn-Sham density functional theory. It combines exact exchange with a compatible non-local correlation functional. The functional is by construction free of one-electron self-interaction, respects constraints derived from uniform coordinate scaling, and has the correct asymptotic behavior of the xc energy density. It contains one parameter that is not determined ab initio. We investigate whether it is possible to construct a functional that yields accurate binding energies and affords other advantages, specifi…
On the basis of the zero-temperature grand canonical ensemble generalization of the energy E[N,N_s,v,B] for fractional particle N and spin N_s numbers, the energy surface over the (N,N_s) plane is displayed and analyzed in the case of homogeneous external magnetic fields B(r). The (negative of the) left/right-side derivatives of the energy with respect to N, N_up, and N_down give the fixed-N_s, spin-up, and spin-down ionization potentials/electron affinities, respectively, while the derivative of E[N,N_s,v,B] with respect to N_s gives the (signed) half excitation energy to a state with N_s inc…
The optimized effective potential (OEP) is the exact Kohn-Sham potential for explicitly orbital-dependent energy functionals, e.g., the exact exchange energy. We give a proof for the OEP equation which does not depend on the chain rule for functional derivatives and directly yields the equation in its simplest form: a certain first-order density shift must vanish. This condition explains why the highest-occupied orbital energies of Hartree-Fock and exact-exchange OEP are so close. More importantly, we show that the exact OEP can be constructed iteratively from the first-order shifts of the Koh…
We analyze the inverse problem of Density Functional Theory using a regularized variational method. First, we show that given $k$ and a target density $ρ$, there exist potentials having $k^{\text{th}}$ bound mixed states which densities are arbitrarily close to $ρ$. The state can be chosen pure in dimension $d=1$ and without interactions, and we provide numerical and theoretical evidence consistently leading us to conjecture that the same pure representability result holds for $d=2$, but that the set of pure-state $v$-representable densities is not dense for $d=3$. Finally, we present an inver…
