Large-scale surveys will provide spectroscopy for $\sim$50 million resolved stars in the Milky Way and Local Group. However, these data will have a high degree of heterogeneity and most will be low-resolution ($R<10000$), posing challenges to measuring consistent and reliable stellar labels. Here, we introduce a framework for identifying and remedying these issues. By simultaneously fitting the full spectrum and Gaia photometry with the Payne, we measure $\sim$40 abundances for 8 red giants in M15. From degraded quality Keck/HIRES spectra, we evaluate trends with resolution and S/N and find that (i) $\sim$20 abundances are recovered consistently within $\lesssim$0.1 dex agreement and with $\lesssim$0.05-0.15~dex systematic uncertainties from $10000\lesssim R\lesssim80000$; (ii) for 9 elements (C, Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Fe, Ni, Y, Nd), this systematic precision and accuracy extends down to $R\sim2500$; and (iii) while most elements do not exhibit strong S/N-dependent systematics, there are non-negligible biases for 4 elements (C, Mg, Ca, and Dy) below $\text{S/N}\sim10$ pixel$^{-1}$. We compare statistical uncertainties from MCMC sampling to the easier-to-compute Cramér-Rao bounds and find that they agree for $\sim$75% of elements, indicating the latter to be a reliable and faster way to estimate uncertainties. Our analysis illustrates the great promise of low-resolution spectroscopy for stellar chemical abundance work, and ongoing improvements to stellar models (e.g., 3D-NLTE physics) will only further extend its viability to more elements and to higher precision and accuracy.

The 'First Stars' programme revealed the metal-poor halo star CS 31082-001 to be r-process and actinide rich, including the first measurement of a uranium abundance for an old star. To better characterise and understand such rare objects, we present the first abundance estimates of three elements (Be, V, Cu) for CS 31082-001 from analysis of its near-ultraviolet spectrum. Beryllium is rarely measured in giant stars, and we confirm that its abundance in this star is low due to the rather cool effective temperature that causes destruction of both Be and Li in its atmosphere. Vanadium and copper …
We present metallicities for red giant stars in the globular cluster NGC 6273 based on intermediate resolution GMOS-S spectra of the calcium triplet region. For the 42 radial velocity members with reliable calcium triplet line strength measurements, we obtain metallicities, [Fe/H], using calibrations established from standard globular clusters. We confirm the presence of an intrinsic abundance dispersion identified by Johnson et al. (2015). The total range in [Fe/H] is ~1.0 dex and after taking into account the measurement errors, the intrinsic abundance dispersion is σ[Fe/H] = 0.17 dex. Among…
We present a tutorial on the determination of the physical conditions and chemical abundances in gaseous nebulae. We also include a brief review of recent results on the study of gaseous nebulae, their relevance for the study of stellar evolution, galactic chemical evolution, and the evolution of the universe. One of the most important problems in abundance determinations is the existence of a discrepancy between the abundances determined with collisionally excited lines and those determined by recombination lines, this is called the ADF (abundance discrepancy factor) problem; we review result…
We analyze the physical conditions, chemical composition and other properties of the photoionized Herbig-Haro object HH~204 through Very Large Telescope (VLT) echelle spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope (\textit{HST}) imaging. We kinematically isolate the high-velocity emission of HH~204 from the emission of the background nebula and study the sub-arcsecond distribution of physical conditions and ionic abundances across the HH object. We find that low and intermediate-ionization emission arises exclusively from gas at photoionization equilibrium temperatures, whereas the weak high-ionizati…
Elemental abundances in the solar corona are known to be different from those observed in the solar photosphere. The ratio of coronal to photospheric abundance shows a dependence on the first ionisation potential (FIP) of the element. We estimate FIP bias from direct measurements of elemental abundances from soft X-ray spectra using data from multiple space missions covering a range of solar activity levels. This comprehensive analysis shows clear evidence for a decrease in FIP bias around maximum intensity of the X-ray flare with coronal abundances briefly tending to photospheric values and a…
We present MUSE deep integral-field unit spectroscopy of three planetary nebulae(PNe) with high abundance discrepancy factors (ADF > 20): NGC 6778, M 1-42 and Hf 2-2. We have constructed flux maps for more than 40 emission lines, and use them to build extinction, electron temperature (T$_e$), electron density (n$_e$), and ionic abundances maps of a number of ionic species. The effects of the contribution of recombination to the auroral [N II] and [O II] lines on T$_e$ and the abundance maps of low-ionization species are evaluated using recombination diagnostics. As a result, low T$_e$ values a…
We present abundances of globular clusters in the Milky Way and Fornax from integrated light spectra. Our goal is to evaluate the consistency of the integrated light analysis relative to standard abundance analysis for individual stars in those same clusters. This sample includes an updated analysis of 7 clusters from our previous publications and results for 5 new clusters that expand the metallicity range over which our technique has been tested. We find that the [Fe/H] measured from integrated light spectra agrees to $\sim$0.1 dex for globular clusters with metallicities as high as [Fe/H]=$…
We report on the first high-resolution spectroscopic analysis of HE0020-1741, a bright (V=12.9), ultra metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -4.1), carbon-enhanced ([C/Fe] = +1.7) star selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. This star exhibits low abundances of neutron-capture elements ([Ba/Fe] = -1.1), and an absolute carbon abundance A(C) = 6.1; based on either criterion, HE0020-1741 is sub-classified as a CEMP-no star. We show that the light-element abundance pattern of HE0020-1741 is consistent with predicted yields from a massive (M = 21.5 Mo), primordial composition, supernova (SN) progenitor. We also comp…
We report chemical abundances of 14 young $α$-rich stars including neutron-capture elements based on high-quality optical spectra from HIRES/Keck I and differential line-by-line analysis. From the comparison of the abundance patterns of young $α$-rich stars to those of nearby bright red giants with a similar metallicity range ($-0.7<[\mathrm{Fe/H}]<-0.2$), we confirm their high $α$-element abundances reported by previous studies based on near-infrared spectroscopy. We reveal for the first time low abundances of $s$-process elements and high abundances of $r$-process elements. All the abundance…
We measure chemical abundances for over 20 elements of 15 N-rich field stars with high resolution ($R \sim 30000$) optical spectra. We find that Na, Mg, Al, Si, and Ca abundances of our N-rich field stars are mostly consistent with those of stars from globular clusters (GCs). Seven stars are estimated to have [Al/Fe$]>0.5$, which is not found in most GC "first generation" stars. On the other hand, $α$ element abundances (especially Ti) could show distinguishable differences between in situ stars and accreted stars. We discover that one interesting star, with consistently low [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], …
We present high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectra of the four brightest confirmed red giant stars in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Bootes II (Boo II). These stars all inhabit the metal-poor tail of the Boo II metallicity distribution function. The chemical abundance pattern of all detectable elements in these stars is consistent with that of the Galactic halo. However, all four stars have undetectable amounts of neutron-capture elements Sr and Ba, with upper limits comparable to the lowest ever detected in the halo or in other dwarf galaxies. One star exhibits significant radial velocity variati…
Carbon abundance in Small Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae through Advanced Camera for Surveys prism spectroscopy: constraining stellar evolution at low metallicity
MAGIS (Measuring Abundances of red super Giants with Infrared Spectroscopy) project I. Establishment of an abundance analysis procedure for red supergiants and its evaluation with nearby stars
We present the abundance analyses of 7 Carbon enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars to understand the origin of carbon in them. We used high-resolution optical spectra to derive abundances of various elements. We also used low-resolution Near-Infrared (NIR) spectra to derive the abundance of O and 12C/13C from the CO molecular band and compared their values with those derived from high-resolution optical spectra. We identified a good agreement between the values. Thus, in cool CEMP stars, the NIR observations complement the high-resolution optical observations to derive the oxygen abundance and the…
High-resolution optical spectroscopy was conducted for the metal-poor post-AGB star CC Lyr to determine its chemical abundances and spectral line profiles. Our standard abundance analysis confirms its extremely low metallicity ([Fe/H]<-3.5) and a clear correlation between abundance ratios and the condensation temperature for 11 elements, indicating that dust depletion is the cause of the abundance anomaly of this object. The very low abundances of Sr and Ba, which are detected for the first time for this object, suggest that heavy neutron-capture elements are not significantly enhanced in this…
We determine Mg abundances in 6 Gaia benchmark stars using theoretical one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic model atmospheres, as well as temporally- and spatially-averaged 3D model atmospheres (<3D>). The stars cover a range of Teff from 4700 to 6500 K, log g from 1.6 to 4.4 dex, and [Fe/H] from -3.0 dex to solar. Spectrum synthesis calculations are performed in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and in non-LTE (NLTE) using the oscillator strengths recently published by Pehlivan Rhodin et al. We find that: a) Mg abundances determined from the infrared spectra are as accurate as the optical dia…
We test the performance of our analysis technique for integrated-light spectra by applying it to seven well-studied Galactic GCs that span a wide range of metallicities. Integrated-light spectra were obtained by scanning the slit of the UVES spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope across the half-light diameters of the clusters. We modelled the spectra using resolved HST colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), as well as theoretical isochrones, in combination with standard stellar atmosphere and spectral synthesis codes. The abundances of Fe, Na, Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Ba were compared with litera…
We derive metallicities for 41 cataclysmic variables (CVs) from near-infrared spectroscopy. We use synthetic spectra that cover the 0.8 $μ$m $\leq λ\leq$ 2.5 $μ$m bandpass to ascertain the value of [Fe/H] for CVs with K-type donors, while also deriving abundances for other elements. Using calibrations for determining [Fe/H] from the $K$-band spectra of M-dwarfs, we derive more precise values for T$_{\rm eff}$ for the secondaries in the shortest period CVs, and examine whether they have carbon deficits. In general, the donor stars in CVs have sub-solar metallicities. We confirm carbon deficits …
Stellar population astrophysics (SPA) with the TNG. Abundance analysis of nearby red giants and red clump stars: combining high resolution spectroscopy and asteroseismology
Nebular spectroscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the production of heavy elements by slow neutron(n)-capture nucleosynthesis (the s-process). Several transitions of n-capture elements have been identified in planetary nebulae (PNe) in the last few years, with the aid of sensitive high-resolution near-infrared spectrometers. Combined with optical spectroscopy, the newly discovered near-infrared lines enable more accurate abundance determinations than previously possible, and provide access to elements that had not previously been studied in PNe or their progenitors. Neutron-capture element…
We have done a spectroscopical analysis of the type I planetary nebula (PN) NGC 5315, through high-resolution (R$\sim$40000) optical spectroscopy with UVES at the 8.2m Very Large Telescope, and medium-resolution (R$\sim$4800) near-IR spectroscopy with FIRE at the 6.5m Magellan Baade telescope, covering a wide spectral range from 0.31 $μ$m to 2.50 $μ$m. The main aim of this work is to investigate the slow neutron(n)-capture process (the s-process) in the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star progenitor of a type I PNe. We detected and identified about 700 features, including lines from the n-captu…
The determination of chemical abundances constitutes a fundamental requirement for obtaining a complete picture of a star. Particularly in massive stars, CNO abundances are of prime interest, due to the nuclear CNO-cycle and various mixing processes which bring these elements to the surface. We aim at enabling a reliable carbon spectroscopy for our unified NLTE atmosphere code FASTWIND. We develop a new carbon model atom including CII/III/IV/V, and discuss problems related to carbon spectroscopy in O-type stars. We describe different tests to examine the reliability of our implementation, and …
We present elemental abundances for eight unevolved extremely metal-poor stars with $T_{\rm eff}>5500\,\mathrm{K}$, among which seven have $[\mathrm{Fe/H}]<-3.5$. The sample is selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey / Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SDSS/SEGUE), and our previous high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up with the Subaru Telescope (Aoki et al.). Several methods to derive stellar parameters are compared, and no significant offset in the derived parameters is found in most cases. From an abundance analysis relative to the standard extremely metal-poor…
Open cluster members are coeval and share the same initial bulk chemical compositions. Consequently, differences in surface abundances between members of a cluster that are at different evolutionary stages can be used to study the effects of mixing and internal chemical processing. We carry out an abundance analysis of seven elements (Li, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Fe) in 66 stars belonging to the open cluster M67, based on high resolution GALAH spectra, 1D MARCS model atmospheres, and, for the first time for a large sample of M67 stars, non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer…
With the purpose of performing a homogeneous determination of elemental abundances for members of the Lupus T association, we analyzed three chemical elements: lithium, iron, and barium. The aims were: to derive the Li abundance for ~90% of known class II stars in the Lupus I, II, III, IV clouds; to perform chemical tagging of a region where few Fe abundance measurements have been obtained in the past, and no determination of the Ba content has been done up to now. We also investigated possible Ba enhancement, as this element has become increasingly interesting in the last years following the …
Lithium has confused scientists for decades at almost each scale of the universe. Lithium-rich giants are peculiar stars with lithium abundances over model prediction. A large fraction of lithium-rich low-mass evolved stars are traditionally supposed to be red giant branch (RGB) stars. Recent studies, however, report that red clump (RC) stars are more frequent than RGB. Here, we present a uniquely large systematic study combining the direct asteroseismic analysis with the spectroscopy on the lithium-rich stars. The majority of lithium-rich stars are confirmed to be RCs, whereas RGBs are minor.…
$δ$ Scuti stars are remarkable objects for asteroseismology. In spite of decades of investigations, there are still important questions about these pulsating stars to be answered, such as their positions in $\log$$T_{\rm eff}$ $-$ $\log g$ diagram, or the dependence of the pulsation modes on atmospheric parameters and rotation. Therefore, we performed a detailed spectroscopic study of $41$ $δ$ Scuti stars. The selected objects are located near the $γ$ Doradus instability strip to make a reliable comparison between both types of variables. Spectral classification, stellar atmospheric parameters…
