We introduce the error-sum function of Pierce expansions. Some basic properties of the error-sum function are analyzed. We also examine the fractal property of the graph of it by calculating the Hausdorff dimension, the box-counting dimension, and the covering dimension of the graph.
We provide a multidimensional weighted Euler--MacLaurin summation formula on polytopes and a multidimensional generalization of a result due to L. J. Mordell on the series expansion in Bernoulli polynomials. These results are consequences of a more general series expansion; namely, if $χ_{τ\mathcal{P}}$ denotes the characteristic function of a dilated integer convex polytope $\mathcal{P}$ and $q$ is a function with suitable regularity, we prove that the periodization of $qχ_{τ\mathcal{P}}$ admits an expansion in terms of multivariate Bernoulli polynomials. These multivariate polynomials are re…
In this short note we show the equivalence of Fourier expansion and Poisson summation approaches for the series approximation of the exponential function $\exp ({-{t^2}/4})$. The application of the Poisson summation formula is shown to reduce to that of the Fourier expansion method.
An asymptotic expansion for the generalised quadratic Gauss sum $$S_N(x,θ)=\sum_{j=1}^{N} \exp (πixj^2+2πijθ),$$ where $x$, $θ$ are real and $N$ is a positive integer, is obtained as $x\rightarrow 0$ and $N\rightarrow\infty$ such that $Nx$ is finite. The form of this expansion holds for all values of $Nx+θ$ and, in particular, in the neighbourhood of integer values of $Nx+θ$. A simple bound for the remainder in the expansion is derived. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the expansion and the sharpness of the bound.
Uniform upper bounds and the asymptotic expansion with an explicit remainder term are established for the Macdonald function $K_{iτ}(x)$. The results can be applied, for instance, to study the summability of the divergent Kontorovich-Lebedev integrals in the sense of Jones. Namely, we answer affirmatively a question (cf. [6]) whether these integrals converge for even entire functions of the exponential type in a weak sense.
We examine the sum of modified Bessel functions with argument depending quadratically on the summation index given by \[S_ν(a)=\sum_{n\geq 1} (\frac{1}{2} an^2)^{-ν} K_ν(an^2)\qquad (|\arg\,a|<π/2)\] as the parameter $|a|\to 0$. It is shown that the positive real $a$-axis is a Stokes line, where an infinite number of increasingly subdominant exponentially small terms present in the asymptotic expansion undergo a smooth, but rapid, transition as this ray is crossed. Particular attention is devoted to the details of the expansion on the Stokes line as $a\to 0$ through positive values. Numerical …
In this paper, we prove that the partial sum process of general orthogonal series is a geometric 2-rough process under the same condition as in Menshov-Rademacher Theorem. For Fourier series, the condition can be improved, and an equivalent condition on the limit function is identified.
We examine convergent representations for the sum of a decaying exponential and a Bessel function in the form \[\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{e^{-an}}{(\frac{1}{2} bn)^ν}\,J_ν(bn),\] where $J_ν(x)$ is the Bessel function of the first kind of order $ν>-1/2$ and $a$, $b$ are positive parameters. By means of a double Mellin-Barnes integral representation we obtain a convergent asymptotic expansion that enables the evaluation of this sum in the limit $a\to 0$ with $b<2π$ fixed. A similar result is derived for the sum when the Bessel function is replaced by the modified Bessel function $K_ν(x)$. The alte…
We examine the sum of a decaying exponential (depending non-linearly on the summation index) and a Bessel function in the form \[\sum_{n=1}^\infty e^{-an^p}\frac{J_ν(an^px)}{(an^px/2)^ν}\qquad (x>0),\] in the limit $a\to0$, where $J_ν(z)$ is the Bessel function of the first kind of real order $ν$ and $a$ and $p$ are positive parameters. By means of a Mellin transform approach we obtain an asymptotic expansion that enables the evaluation of this sum in the limit $a\to 0$. A similar result is derived for the sum when the Bessel function is replaced by the modified Bessel function $I_ν(z)$ when $…
A representation for the Riemann zeta function valid for arbitrary complex $s=σ+it$ is $ζ(s)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty A(n,s)$, where \[A(n,s)=\frac{2^{-n-1}}{1-2^{1-s}} \sum_{k=0}^n \left(\!\begin{array}{c}n\\k\end{array}\!\right) \frac{(-)^k}{(k+1)^s}.\] In this note we examine the asymptotics of $A(n,s)$ as $n\to\infty$ when $t=an$, where $a>0$ is a fixed parameter, by application of the method of steepest descents to an integral representation. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the expansion obtained.
We consider the asymptotic expansion of the sum \[S_p(a;w)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty n^{-w}\e^{-an^p}\] as $a\rightarrow 0$ in $|\arg\,a|<π/2$ for arbitrary finite $p>$ and $w>0$. Our attention is concentrated mainly on the case when $p$ and $w$ are both even integers, where the expansion consists of a {\it finite} algebraic expansion together with a sequence of increasingly subdominant exponential expansions. This exponentially small component produces a transformation for $S_p(a;w)$ analogous to the well-known Poisson-Jacobi transformation for the sum with $p=2$ and $w=0$. Numerical results are give…
Let $f_k$ be the $k$-th Fourier coefficient of a function $f$ in terms of the orthonormal Hermite, Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ for the inequality $\sum_{k}|f_k|^2θ^k<\infty$ to hold with $θ>1$. As a by-product new orthogonality relations for the Hermite and Laguerre polynomials are found. The basic machinery for the proofs is provided by the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
We show that there exists an integrable function on the $n$-sphere $(n\ge 2)$, whose Cesàro (C,$\frac{n-1}{2}$) means with respect to the spherical harmonic expansion diverge unboundedly almost everywhere. By studying equivalence theorems, we also obtain the corresponding results for Riesz and Bochner-Riesz means. This extends results of Stein (1961) for flat tori and complements the work of Taibleson (1985) for spheres.
We obtain an asymptotic expansion for the sum \[S(a;w)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{e^{-an^2}}{n^{w}}\] as $a\rightarrow 0$ in $|\arg\,a|<π/2$ for arbitrary finite $w>0$. The result when $w=2m$, where $m$ is a positive integer, is the analogue of the well-known Poisson-Jacobi transformation for the sum with $m=0$. Numerical results are given to illustrate the accuracy of the expansion.
An inverse polynomial has a Chebyshev series expansion 1/\sum(j=0..k)b_j*T_j(x)=\sum'(n=0..oo) a_n*T_n(x) if the polynomial has no roots in [-1,1]. If the inverse polynomial is decomposed into partial fractions, the a_n are linear combinations of simple functions of the polynomial roots. If the first k of the coefficients a_n are known, the others become linear combinations of these with expansion coefficients derived recursively from the b_j's. On a closely related theme, finding a polynomial with minimum relative error towards a given f(x) is approximately equivalent to finding the b_j in f(…
Consider the Riemann sum of a smooth compactly supported function h(x) on a polyhedron in R^d, sampled at the points of the lattice Z^d/t. We give an asymptotic expansion when t goes to infinity, writing each coefficient of this expansion as a sum indexed by the faces f of the polyhedron, where the f-term is the integral over f of a differential operator applied to the function h(x). In particular, if a Euclidean scalar product is chosen, we prove that the differential operator for the face f can be chosen (in a unique way) to involve only normal derivatives to f. Our formulas are valid for a …
We consider the Bochner-Riesz means for the Hermite and special Hermite expansions and study their $L^p$ boundedness with the sharp summability index in a local setting. In two dimensions we establish the boundedness on the optimal range of $p$ and extend the previously known range in higher dimensions. Furthermore, we prove a new lower bound on the $L^p$ summability index for the Hermite Bochner-Riesz means in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 2.$ This invalidates the conventional conjecture which was expected to be true.
Asymptotic expansions of series $\sum_{k=0}^\infty ε^k(k+a)^γe^{-(k+a)^αx}$ and $\sum_{k=0}^\infty ε^k(k+a)^γ/ (x(k+a)^α+1)^μ}$ in powers of $x$ as $x\to+0$ are found, where $ε=1$ or $ε=-1$. These expansions are applied to obtain precise inequalities for Mathieu series. Keywords: Asymptotic expansion, residues, generalized Mathieu series, inequalities.
V. Nestoridis conjectured that if $Ω$ is a simply connected subset of $\mathbb{C}$ that does not contain $0$ and $S(Ω)$ is the set of all functions $f\in \mathcal{H}(Ω)$ with the property that the set $\left\{T_N(f)(z)\coloneqq\sum_{n=0}^N\dfrac{f^{(n)}(z)}{n!} (-z)^n : N = 0,1,2,\dots \right\}$ is dense in $\mathcal{H}(Ω)$, then $S(Ω)$ is a dense $G_δ$ set in $\mathcal{H}(Ω)$. We answer the conjecture in the affirmative in the special case where $Ω$ is an open disc $D(z_0,r)$ that does not contain $0$.
We continue the study of the construction of analytical coefficients of the epsilon-expansion of hypergeometric functions and their connection with Feynman diagrams. In this paper, we show the following results: Theorem A: The multiple (inverse) binomial sums of arbitrary weight and depth (see Eq. (1.1)) are expressible in terms of Remiddi-Vermaseren functions. Theorem B: The epsilon expansion of a hypergeometric function with one half-integer value of parameter (see Eq. (1.2)) is expressible in terms of the harmonic polylogarithms of Remiddi and Vermaseren with coefficients that are ratios of…
