This paper presents a simple formalism for calculating X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) that has as input orbital-resolved density of states from a single-particle or many-body \textit{ab initio} calculation and is designed to capture itinerant-like features. We use this formalism to calculate both the XAS and RIXS with input from DFT and DFT+DMFT for the recently studied reduced valence nickelates $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ and $R$NiO$_2$ ($R$ a rare earth), and these results are then contrasted with those for the cuprate CaCuO$_2$ and the unreduced nickelate $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. In contrast to the unreduced $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, the reduced valence nickelates as well as the cuprate show strong orbital polarization due to the dominance of $x^2-y^2$ orbitals for the unoccupied $3d$ states. We also reproduce two key aspects of a recent RIXS experiment for $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$: (i) a charge transfer feature between $3d$ and oxygen $2p$ states whose energy we find to decrease as one goes from $R$NiO$_2$ to $R_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ to the cuprate, and (ii) an energy-dependent polarization reversal of the fluorescence line that arises from hybridization of the unoccupied $z^2$ states with $R$ 5d states. We end with some implications of our results for the nature of the $3d$ electrons in reduced valence nickelates.
Layer-by-layer oxide molecular beam epitaxy has been used to synthesize cuprate-nickelate multilayer structures of composition (La$_2$CuO$_4$)$_m$/LaO/(LaNiO$_3$)$_n$. In a combined experimental and theoretical study, we show that these structures allow a clean separation of dopant and doped layers. Specifically, the LaO layer separating cuprate and nickelate blocks provides an additional charge that, according to density functional theory calculations, is predominantly accommodated in the interfacial nickelate layers. This is reflected in an elongation of bond distances and changes in valence…
Low-valence nickelates $-$ including infinite-layer (IL) and trilayer (TL) compounds $-$ are longstanding candidates for mimicking the high-temperature superconductivity of cuprates. A recent breakthrough in the field came with the discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped IL nickelates. Yet, the degree of similarity between low-valence nickelates and cuprates is the subject of a profound debate for which soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments at the Ni $L$- and O $K$-edge provided critical input. In this review, we will discuss the essential elements of the electronic structure of low-valance…
Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is an overdoped analog of hole-doped layered cuprates. Here we show via ab initio calculations that Ce-doped Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ (Pr$_3$CeNi$_3$O$_8$) has the same electronic structure as the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of parent cuprates. We find that substantial Ce-doping should be thermodynamically stable and that other 4+ cations would yield a similar antiferromagnetic insulating state, arguing this configuration is robust for layered nickelates of low enough valence. The analogies with cuprates at different $d$ fillings suggest that intermediate Ce-doping concentrat…
Building upon the recent progress on the intriguing underlying physics for the newly discovered infinite-layer nickelates, in this article we review an examination of valence charge and spin excitations via multi-orbital Hubbard models as way to determine the fundamental building blocks for Hamiltonians that can describe the low energy properties of infinite-layer nickelates. We summarize key results from density-functional approaches, and apply them to the study of x-ray absorption to determine the valence ground states of infinite-layer nickelates in their parent form, and show that a fundam…
Charge order is a central feature of the physics of cuprate superconductors and is known to arise from a modulation of holes with primarily oxygen character. Low-valence nickelate superconductors also host charge order, but the electronic character of this symmetry breaking is unsettled. Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ni $L_2$-edge, we identify intertwined involvements of Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$, $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$, and O $2p_σ$ orbitals in the formation of diagonal charge order in an overdoped low-valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$. The Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, strong…
The discovery of superconductivity in square-planar low valence nickelates has ignited a vigorous debate regarding their essential electronic properties: Do these materials have appreciable oxygen charge-transfer character akin to the cuprates, or are they in a distinct Mott-Hubbard regime where oxygen plays a minimal role? Here, we resolve this question using O $K$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of the low valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$ and a prototypical cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.35$). As expected, the cuprate lies deep in the charge-t…

Ab initio calculations predict a metal-insulator transition at zero temperature to occur in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ at moderate pressures as a result of a pressure-induced spin-state transition. The spin-state transition that is seen at 105 K at ambient pressure from a low-temperature high-spin state to a high-temperature low-spin state has been observed to be shifted to lower temperatures as pressure is applied. From our calculations we find that a smaller unit cell volume favors the metallic low-spin state, which becomes more stable at 5 GPa. Similar physics should take place in the related compou…
Three low-valence layered nickelates with general formula La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ ($δ$=0.0, 0.5, 1) are studied by ab initio techniques. Both the insulating and metallic limits are analyzed, together with the compound at the Mott transition ($δ$= 0.5; Ni$^{2+}$), that shows insulating behavior, with all Ni atoms in a S=1 high-spin state. The compound in the $δ$= 1 limit (La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$), with mean formal valence Ni$^{1.5+}$ and hence nominally metallic, nevertheless shows a correlated {\it molecular} insulating state, produced by the quantum confinement of the NiO$_2$ bilayers and the presenc…
We study low temperature properties of the Hubbard model for the bismuth nickelate, where degenerate orbitals in the nickel ions and a single orbital in the bismuth ions are taken into account, combining dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. We discuss the effect of the attractive interactions to mimic the valence skipping phenomenon in the bismuth ions. We demonstrate how the charge and magnetically ordered states are stable against thermal fluctuations. It is furthermore clarified that the ferromagnetically ordered and orbital ordered states are sta…
We present a computational study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and x-ray absorption in a representative rare-earth nickelate LuNiO$_3$. We study the changes in the spectra across the metal-insulator/site-disproportionation transition. In particular, we address the question of site-selectivity of the two methods in the disproportionated insulating phase and the signature of metal-insulator transition in the fluorescence-like feature of the RIXS spectra. To this end we use the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach combined with configuratio…
The metal-insulator transitions and the intriguing physical properties of rare-earth perovskite nickelates have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Nonetheless, a complete understanding of these materials remains elusive. Here, taking a NdNiO3 thin film as a representative example, we utilize a combination of x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopies to resolve important aspects of the complex electronic structure of the rare-earth nickelates. The unusual coexistence of bound and continuum excitations observed in the RIXS spectra provides stro…

We present a theory describing the local electronic properties of the perovskite rare earth nickelates--materials which have negative charge transfer energies, strong O $2p$ -- Ni $3d$ covalence, and breathing mode lattice distortions at the origin of highly studied metal-insulator and antiferromagnetic ordering transitions. Utilizing a full orbital, full correlation double cluster approach, we find strong charge fluctuations in agreement with a bond disproportionation interpretation. The unique double cluster formulation permits the inclusion of necessary orbital degeneracies and Coulomb inte…
A series of Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates, Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ (${n}$ = 1-5), have been stabilized in thin film form using reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. High crystalline quality has been verified by X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates the ${n}$-dependent valence states of nickel in these compounds. Metal-insulator transitions show clear ${n}$ dependence for intermediate members (${n}$ = 3-5), and the low-temperature resistivities of which show logarithmic dependence, resembling the Kondo-scattering as observed i…
We have used resonant x-ray diffraction to develop a detailed description of antiferromagnetic ordering in epitaxial superlattices based on two-unit-cell thick layers of the strongly correlated metal LaNiO3. We also report reference experiments on thin films of PrNiO3 and NdNiO3. The resulting data indicate a spiral state whose polarization plane can be controlled by adjusting the Ni d-orbital occupation via two independent mechanisms: epitaxial strain and quantum confinement of the valence electrons. The data are discussed in the light of recent theoretical predictions.
We provide a set of computational experiments based on \textit{ab initio} calculations to elucidate whether a cuprate-like antiferromagnetic insulating state can be present in the phase diagram of the low-valence layered nickelate family (R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$, R= rare-earth, $n=1-\infty$) in proximity to half-filling. It is well established that at $d^9$ filling the infinite-layer ($n=\infty$) nickelate is metallic, in contrast to cuprates wherein an antiferromagnetic insulator is expected. We show that for the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) reduced phases of the series (finite $n$) an antiferrom…

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in doped NdNiO$_2$, we study the magnetic exchange interaction $J$ in layered $d^9$ nickelates from first principles. The mother compounds of the high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates belong to the charge-transfer regime in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen diagram and have $J$ larger than 100 meV. While this feature makes the cuprates very different from other transition metal oxides, it is of great interest whether layered $d^9$ nickelates can also have such a large $J$. However, one complexity is that NdNiO$_2$ is not a Mott insulator due to carrier doping…
We present a theoretical investigation of the origin of Raman-like and fluorescencelike (FL) features of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra. Using a combination of local-density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory and a configuration interaction solver for Anderson impurity model, we calculate the $L$-edge RIXS and x-ray absorption spectra of high-valence transition-metal oxides LaCuO$_3$ and NaCuO$_2$. We analyze in detail the behavior of the FL feature and show how it is connected to the details of electronic and crystal structure. On the studied compounds we demonstr…

The search for oxide materials with physical properties similar to the cuprate high Tc superconductors, but based on alternative transition metals such as nickel, has grown and evolved over time. The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in…
We present a valence transition model for electron- and hole-doped cuprates, within which there occurs a discrete jump in ionicity Cu$^{2+} \to$ Cu$^{1+}$ upon doping, at or near optimal doping in the electron-doped compounds and at the pseudogap phase transition in the hole-doped materials. Doped cuprates have negative charge-transfer gaps, just as rare earth nickelates and BaBiO$_3$. Because of strong correlations and small $d-p$ electron hoppings the systems behave as effective $\frac{1}{2}$-filled Cu-band in the undoped state, and as correlated two-dimensional geometrically frustrated near…
At interfaces between conventional materials, band bending and alignment are classically controlled by differences in electrochemical potential. Applying this concept to oxides in which interfaces can be polar and cations may adopt a mixed valence has led to the discovery of novel two-dimensional states between simple band insulators such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. However, many oxides have a more complex electronic structure, with charge, orbital and/or spin orders arising from correlations between transition metal and oxygen ions. Strong correlations thus offer a rich playground to engineer funct…
We review the current state of efforts to use resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), which is an elastic, momentum-resolved, valence band probe of strongly correlated electron systems, to study stripe-like phenomena in copper-oxide superconductors and related materials. We review the historical progress including RSXS studies of Wigner crystallization in spin ladder materials, stripe order in 214-phase nickelates, 214-phase cuprates, and other systems. One of the major outstanding issues in RSXS concerns its relationship to more established valence band probes, namely angle-resolved photoemiss…
Resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) is a leading probe of valence band order in materials best known for detecting charge density wave order in the copper-oxide superconductors. One of the biggest limitations on the RSXS technique is the presence of a severe fluorescence background which, like the RSXS cross section itself, is enhanced under resonant conditions. This background prevents the study of weak signals such as diffuse scattering from glassy or fluctuating order that is spread widely over momentum space. Recent advances in superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) detectors have …
We investigated the metal-insulator transition for epitaxial thin films of the perovskite CaFeO3, a material with a significant oxygen ligand hole contribution to its electronic structure. We find that biaxial tensile and compressive strain suppress the metal-insulator transition temperature. By combining hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional calculations, we resolve the element-specific changes to the electronic structure across the metal-insulator transition. We demonstrate that the Fe electron valence undergoes no observable change…
