Although two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have fantastic physical and chemical properties as well as wide applications, it remains challenging to produce stable MXenes due to their rapid structural degradation. Here, unique metal-bonded atomic layers of transition metal carbides with high stabilities are produced via a simple topological reaction between chlorine-terminated MXenes and selected metals, where the metals enable to not only remove Cl terminations, but also efficiently bond with adjacent atomic MXene slabs, driven by the symmetry of MAX phases. The films constructed from Al-bonded Ti$_3$C$_2$Cl$_x$ atomic layers show high oxidation resistance up to 400 degrees centigrade and low sheet resistance of 9.3 ohm per square. Coupled to the multi-layer structure, the Al-bonded Ti$_3$C$_2$Cl$_x$ film displays a significantly improved EMI shielding capability with a total shielding effectiveness value of 39 dB at a low thickness of 3.1 micron, outperforming pure Ti$_3$C$_2$Cl$_x$ film.
Here, we report the first successful exfoliation of two-dimensional Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ MXene through selective etching of silicon from titanium silicon carbide (Ti$_3$SiC$_2$) MAX. The successful etching and exfoliation of MXene is confirmed through the shifting of all (00l) peaks to lower angles along with the increase in c-lattice parameter as determined by X-ray diffraction technique to detail the material structure. The c-lattice parameter of multilayered MXene was found to be 19.34Å which was increased to 26.22 Å after delamination process indicating the successful intercalation of TMA+ ion…
The structural, elastic and electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide/nitride based pristine (Tin+1Cn/Tin+1Nn) and functionalized MXenes (Tin+1CnT2/Tin+1NnT2, T stands for the terminal groups: -F, -O and -OH, n = 1, 2, 3) are investigated by density functional theory calculations. Carbide-based MXenes possess larger lattice constants and monolayer thicknesses than nitride-based MXenes. The in-plane Young's moduli of Tin+1Nn are larger than those of Tin+1Cn, whereas in both systems they decrease with the increase of the monolayer thickness. Cohesive energy calculations indi…
MXenes are 2D transition metal carbides with high potential for overcoming limitations of conventional two-dimensional electronics. In this context, various MXenes have shown magnetic properties suitable for applications in spintronics, yet the number of MXenes reported so far is far smaller than their parental MAX phases. Therefore, we have studied the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of bimetallic and vacancy-ordered MXenes derived from a new $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2AlC $ MAX phase to assess whether MXene exfoliation would return stable magnetic materials. In particular, we have in…
Synaptic devices with linear high-speed switching can accelerate learning in artificial neural networks (ANNs) embodied in hardware. Conventional resistive memories however suffer from high write noise and asymmetric conductance tuning, preventing parallel programming of ANN arrays as needed to surpass conventional computing efficiency. Electrochemical random-access memories (ECRAMs), where resistive switching occurs by ion insertion into a redox-active channel address these challenges due to their linear switching and low noise. ECRAMs using two-dimensional (2D) materials and metal oxides suf…
MXenes, a new class of two dimensional materials with several novel properties, are usually prepared from their MAX phases by etching out the A element using strong chemical reagents. This results in passivation of the surfaces of MXene with different functional groups like O, -OH, -F, etc., which in many cases tend to degrade their properties. In this work, using first principle density functional theory based calculations, we propose a novel method to synthesize pristine Ti$_2$C and Ti$_3$C$_2$ MXenes from the bulk titanium carbides with corresponding stoichiometry. Based on the values of cl…
MXenes are a set of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides that offer many potential applications in energy storage and electronic devices. As an important parameter to design new electronic devices, we investigate the work functions of bare MXenes and their functionalized ones with F, OH, and O chemical groups using first-principles calculations. From our calculations, it turns out that the OH terminated MXenes attain ultralow work functions between 1.6 and 2.8 eV. Moreover, depending on the type of the transition metal, the F or O functionalization affects increasing or decre…
The chemical bonding in the carbide core and the surface chemistry in a new group of transition-metal carbides Tin+1Cn-Tx (n=1,2) called MXenes have been investigated by surface-sensitive valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Changes in band structures of stacked nano sheets of different thicknesses are analyzed in connection to known hybridization regions of TiC and TiO2 that affect elastic and transport properties. By employing high excitation energy, the photoelectron cross-section for the C 2s - Ti 3d hybridization region at the bottom of the valence band is enhanced. As shown in …
MXenes are a family two-dimensional transition metal carbide and nitride materials, which often exhibit very good metallic conductivity and are thus of great interest for applications in, e.g., flexible electronics, electrocatalysis, and electromagnetic interference shielding. However, surprisingly little is known about the fermiology of MXenes, i.e, the shape and size of their Fermi-surfaces, and its effect on the material properties. One reason for this may be that MXene surfaces are almost always covered by a mixture of functional groups, and studying Fermi-surfaces of disordered systems is…
The functioning of 2D d2, d3, and d4 transition metal carbides as CO2 conversion catalysts has been proved by well resolved density functional theory (DFT) and DFT+U theoretical calculations. Whilst MXenes from the d2 series (M = Ti, Zr, and Hf) have demonstrated active behaviors for the capture of CO2, the V3C2, Nb3C2, Cr3C2, and Mo3C2 materials exhibit the most promising results for their application in the selective CO2 conversion into CH4, with limiting reaction energies of 1.55, 1.75, 0.69, and 1.24 eV, respectively, at DFT+U computational level plus explicit DFT-D3 dispersion corrections…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially their most prominent member, graphene, have greatly influenced many scientific areas. Moreover, they have become a base for investigating the relativistic properties of condensed matter within the emerging field of Dirac physics. This has ignited an intense search for new materials where charge carriers behave as massless or massive Dirac fermions. Here, we theoretically show the existence of Dirac electrons in a series of 2D transition-metal carbides, known as MXenes. They possess twelve conical crossings in the 1st Brillouin zone with giant spin-orb…
There has been budding demand for the fast, reliable, inexpensive, non-invasive, sensitive, and compact sensors with low power consumption in various fields, such as defence, chemical sensing, health care, and safe environment monitoring units. Particularly, an efficient detection of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) is of great importance for the safety and security of the humans. Inspired by this, we explored molybdenum carbide MXenes (Mo2CTx; Tx= O, F, S) as efficient sensors towards selected CWAs, such as arsine (AsH3), mustard gas (C4H8Cl2S), cyanogen chloride (NCCl), and phosgene (COCl2) bo…
Recent decades have witnessed the breakthroughs in utilizing electron beams as the smallest tools to tailor materials. Whereas, the manipulation of atoms in a controllable manner by the electron beams is a long-time challenge due to the random nature of atom-knock-on. Here, we show that electron irradiation can controllably manipulate atoms in newly-developed MXene multilayers. The multilayers consist of many few-atom-thick transition metal carbide slabs that are terminated with hydroxyl and O functional groups on each slab. Upon electron irradiation, the H atoms of the hydroxyl are knocked of…
The properties of MXenes, a new group of quasi-two-dimensional d-metal carbide or nitride nanomaterials derived by chemical exfoliation from the MAX phases, can be very sensitive to the presence of surface functional groups. Herein, the MXenes Ti2C and Ti3C2 functionalized by methoxy groups are considered by means of the density functional theory tight-binding method. Their structural, electronic properties, and relative stability are discussed in comparison with related and experimentally fabricated hydroxy derivatives of MXenes.
Traditional MXenes with intriguing mechanical and electronic properties, together with the fertilities of elemental compositions and chemical decorations have aroused much attentions. However, the semiconducting traits with direc band gap are extremetely rare among reported MXenes. Thus, broadening the family of MXene beyond carbides and nitrides with unique behaviors is still an extraordinary and fascinating field.
MXenes are technologically interesting 2D materials that show potential in numerous applications. The properties of the MXenes depend at large extent on the selection of elements that build the 2D MX-layer. Another key parameter for tuning the attractive material properties is the species that terminate the surfaces of the MX-layers. Although being an important parameter, experimental studies on the bonding between the MX-layers and the termination species are few and thus an interesting subject of investigation. Here we show that the termination species fluorine (F) bonds to the Ti3C2-surface…
Despite the interest in MXenes in the last decade, all of the MXenes reported have a random mixture of surface terminations (-O, -OH, -F). In addition, restacked films have turbostratic disorder and often contain ions, solvent, and other species in between their layers. Here we report Y2CF2, a layered crystal with a unit cell isostructural to a MXene, in which layers are capped only by fluoride anions. We directly synthesize the 3D crystal through a high-temperature solid-state reaction, which affords the 3D crystal in high yield and purity and ensures that only fluoride ions terminate the lay…
Owing to its outstanding electronic properties, black phosphorus (BP) is considered as a promising material for next-generation optoelectronic devices. In this work, devices based on BP/MXene (Zrn+1CnT2, T = O, F, OH, n = 1, 2) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are designed via first-principles calculations. Zrn+1CnT2 compositions with appropriate work functions lead to the formation of Ohmic contact with BP in the vertical direction. Low Schottky barriers are found along the lateral direction in BP/Zr2CF2, BP/Zr2CO2H2, BP/Zr3C2F2, and BP/Zr3C2O2H2 bilayers, and BP/Zr3C2O2 even exhibits Ohm…
MXene transition-metal carbides and nitrides are of growing interest for energy storage applications. These compounds are especially promising for use as pseudocapacitive electrodes due to their ability to convert energy electrochemically at fast rates. Using voltage-dependent cluster expansion models, we predict the charge storage performance of MXene pseudocapacitors for a range of electrode compositions. $M_3C_2O_2$ electrodes based on group-VI transition metals have up to 80% larger areal energy densities than prototypical titanium-based ( e.g. $Ti_3C_2O_2$) MXene electrodes. We attribute …
Transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) are a newly developing class of two-dimensional (2D) materials with technically robust properties that can be finely tuned by planar surface functionalization. Herein, the critical role of oxygen (O-) functionalization on the tensile mechanical characteristics of thinnest 2D Ti2C MXene is explored by molecular dynamic (MD) simulation with first-principle based ReaxFF forcefield. It is demonstrated that Ti2C sheet shows unique tensile mechanical behaviors that pronouncedly vary with the content of O-functionalization and stretching direction. Upon bot…

MXenes, a family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, have various tunable physical and chemical properties. Their diverse prospective applications in electronics and energy storage devices have triggered great interests in science and technology. MXenes can be functionalized by different surface terminations. Some O and F functionalized MXenes monolayers have been predicted to be topological insulators (TIs). However, the reported OH functionalized MXenes TIs are very few and their electronic structures need to be investigated in more detail. It has been revealed that th…
The family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, so called MXenes, has recently found new members with ordered double transition metals M$'_2$M$"$C$_2$, where M$'$ and M$"$ stand for transition metals. Here, using a set of first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that some of the newly added members, oxide M$'_2$M$"$C$_2$ (M$'$= Mo, W; M$"$= Ti, Zr, Hf) MXenes, are topological insulators. The nontrivial topological states of the predicted MXenes are revealed by the $Z_2$ index, which is evaluated from the parities of the occupied bands below the Fermi energy at time reversal invar…

Recently synthesized two-dimensional transition metal carbides M$_2$C (M=Hf, Nb, Sc, Ta, Ti, V, Zr), known as MXenes, has aroused increasingly attentions in nanoelectronic technology due to their unusual properties. In this paper, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory are carried out to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of M$_2$C subjected to biaxial symmetric mechanical strai…
Using the first-principles calculations, we report the existence of the single-layer (SL) di-titanium oxide Ti$_2$O (labeled as MOene) that constructs a novel family of MXene based on transition metal oxides. This MOene material strongly contrasts the conventional ones consisting of transition metal carbides and/or nitrides. SL Ti$_2$O has high thermal and dynamical stabilities due to the strong Ti$-$O ionic bonding interactions. Moreover, this material is an intrinsic electride and exhibits extremely low diffusion barriers of $\sim$12.0 and 6.3 meV for Li- and Na diffusion, respectively. When…
Two-dimensional materials composed of transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are poised to revolutionize energy conversion and storage. In this work, we used density functional theory (DFT) to investigate adsorption of Mg and Na adatoms on five M$_{2}$CS$_{2}$ monolayers (where M= Mo, Nb, Ti, V, Zr) for battery applications. We assessed the stability of the adatom (i.e. Na and Mg)-monolayer systems by calculating adsorption and formation energies, as well as voltages as a function of surface coverage. For instance, we found that Mo$_{2}$CS$_{2}$ cannot support a full layer of Na nor e…
Recently, a group of MAX phases, (Mo$_{2/3}$Y$_{1/3}$)$_2$AlC, (Mo$_{2/3}$Sc$_{1/3}$)$_2$AlC, (W$_{2/3}$Sc$_{1/3}$)$_2$AlC, (W$_{2/3}$Y$_{1/3}$)$_2$AlC, and (V$_{2/3}$Zr$_{1/3}$)$_2$AlC, with in-plane ordered double transition metals, named iMAX phases, have been synthesized. Experimentally, some of these MAX phases can be chemically exfoliated into two-dimensional (2D) single- or multilayered transition metal carbides, so-called MXenes. Accordingly, the 2D nanostructures derived from iMAX phases are named iMXenes. Here, we investigate the structural stabilities and electronic structures of th…
Due to a large discrepancy between theory and experiment, the electronic character of crystalline boron carbide B$_{13}$C$_{2}$ has been a controversial topic in the field of icosahedral boron-rich solids. We demonstrate that this discrepancy is removed when configurational disorder is accurately considered in the theoretical calculations. We find that while ordered ground state B$_{13}$C$_{2}$ is metallic, configurationally disordered B$_{13}$C$_{2}$, modeled with a superatom-special quasirandom structure method, goes through a metal to non-metal transition as the degree of disorder is increa…
