Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are a large family of materials actively studied for various applications, especially in the field of energy storage. To date, MXenes are commonly synthesized by etching the layered ternary compounds, MAX phases. Here we demonstrate a direct synthetic route for scalable and atom-economic synthesis of MXenes, including phases that have not been synthesized from MAX phases, by the reactions of metals and metal halides with graphite, methane or nitrogen. These directly synthesized MXenes showed excellent energy storage capacity for Li-ion intercalation. The direct synthesis enables chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of MXene carpets and complex spherulite-like morphologies. The latter form in a process resembling the evolution of cellular membranes during endocytosis.
The structural, elastic and electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide/nitride based pristine (Tin+1Cn/Tin+1Nn) and functionalized MXenes (Tin+1CnT2/Tin+1NnT2, T stands for the terminal groups: -F, -O and -OH, n = 1, 2, 3) are investigated by density functional theory calculations. Carbide-based MXenes possess larger lattice constants and monolayer thicknesses than nitride-based MXenes. The in-plane Young's moduli of Tin+1Nn are larger than those of Tin+1Cn, whereas in both systems they decrease with the increase of the monolayer thickness. Cohesive energy calculations indi…
MXenes, a new class of two dimensional materials with several novel properties, are usually prepared from their MAX phases by etching out the A element using strong chemical reagents. This results in passivation of the surfaces of MXene with different functional groups like O, -OH, -F, etc., which in many cases tend to degrade their properties. In this work, using first principle density functional theory based calculations, we propose a novel method to synthesize pristine Ti$_2$C and Ti$_3$C$_2$ MXenes from the bulk titanium carbides with corresponding stoichiometry. Based on the values of cl…
Although two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have fantastic physical and chemical properties as well as wide applications, it remains challenging to produce stable MXenes due to their rapid structural degradation. Here, unique metal-bonded atomic layers of transition metal carbides with high stabilities are produced via a simple topological reaction between chlorine-terminated MXenes and selected metals, where the metals enable to not only remove Cl terminations, but also efficiently bond with adjacent atomic MXene slabs, driven by the symmetry of MAX phases. The fi…
Here, we report the first successful exfoliation of two-dimensional Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ MXene through selective etching of silicon from titanium silicon carbide (Ti$_3$SiC$_2$) MAX. The successful etching and exfoliation of MXene is confirmed through the shifting of all (00l) peaks to lower angles along with the increase in c-lattice parameter as determined by X-ray diffraction technique to detail the material structure. The c-lattice parameter of multilayered MXene was found to be 19.34Å which was increased to 26.22 Å after delamination process indicating the successful intercalation of TMA+ ion…
Traditional MXenes with intriguing mechanical and electronic properties, together with the fertilities of elemental compositions and chemical decorations have aroused much attentions. However, the semiconducting traits with direc band gap are extremetely rare among reported MXenes. Thus, broadening the family of MXene beyond carbides and nitrides with unique behaviors is still an extraordinary and fascinating field.
MXenes are a set of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides that offer many potential applications in energy storage and electronic devices. As an important parameter to design new electronic devices, we investigate the work functions of bare MXenes and their functionalized ones with F, OH, and O chemical groups using first-principles calculations. From our calculations, it turns out that the OH terminated MXenes attain ultralow work functions between 1.6 and 2.8 eV. Moreover, depending on the type of the transition metal, the F or O functionalization affects increasing or decre…
The chemical bonding in the carbide core and the surface chemistry in a new group of transition-metal carbides Tin+1Cn-Tx (n=1,2) called MXenes have been investigated by surface-sensitive valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Changes in band structures of stacked nano sheets of different thicknesses are analyzed in connection to known hybridization regions of TiC and TiO2 that affect elastic and transport properties. By employing high excitation energy, the photoelectron cross-section for the C 2s - Ti 3d hybridization region at the bottom of the valence band is enhanced. As shown in …
MXenes are 2D transition metal carbides with high potential for overcoming limitations of conventional two-dimensional electronics. In this context, various MXenes have shown magnetic properties suitable for applications in spintronics, yet the number of MXenes reported so far is far smaller than their parental MAX phases. Therefore, we have studied the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of bimetallic and vacancy-ordered MXenes derived from a new $(V_{2/3}Zr_{1/3})_2AlC $ MAX phase to assess whether MXene exfoliation would return stable magnetic materials. In particular, we have in…
MXenes are a family two-dimensional transition metal carbide and nitride materials, which often exhibit very good metallic conductivity and are thus of great interest for applications in, e.g., flexible electronics, electrocatalysis, and electromagnetic interference shielding. However, surprisingly little is known about the fermiology of MXenes, i.e, the shape and size of their Fermi-surfaces, and its effect on the material properties. One reason for this may be that MXene surfaces are almost always covered by a mixture of functional groups, and studying Fermi-surfaces of disordered systems is…
The functioning of 2D d2, d3, and d4 transition metal carbides as CO2 conversion catalysts has been proved by well resolved density functional theory (DFT) and DFT+U theoretical calculations. Whilst MXenes from the d2 series (M = Ti, Zr, and Hf) have demonstrated active behaviors for the capture of CO2, the V3C2, Nb3C2, Cr3C2, and Mo3C2 materials exhibit the most promising results for their application in the selective CO2 conversion into CH4, with limiting reaction energies of 1.55, 1.75, 0.69, and 1.24 eV, respectively, at DFT+U computational level plus explicit DFT-D3 dispersion corrections…
Synaptic devices with linear high-speed switching can accelerate learning in artificial neural networks (ANNs) embodied in hardware. Conventional resistive memories however suffer from high write noise and asymmetric conductance tuning, preventing parallel programming of ANN arrays as needed to surpass conventional computing efficiency. Electrochemical random-access memories (ECRAMs), where resistive switching occurs by ion insertion into a redox-active channel address these challenges due to their linear switching and low noise. ECRAMs using two-dimensional (2D) materials and metal oxides suf…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially their most prominent member, graphene, have greatly influenced many scientific areas. Moreover, they have become a base for investigating the relativistic properties of condensed matter within the emerging field of Dirac physics. This has ignited an intense search for new materials where charge carriers behave as massless or massive Dirac fermions. Here, we theoretically show the existence of Dirac electrons in a series of 2D transition-metal carbides, known as MXenes. They possess twelve conical crossings in the 1st Brillouin zone with giant spin-orb…
There has been budding demand for the fast, reliable, inexpensive, non-invasive, sensitive, and compact sensors with low power consumption in various fields, such as defence, chemical sensing, health care, and safe environment monitoring units. Particularly, an efficient detection of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) is of great importance for the safety and security of the humans. Inspired by this, we explored molybdenum carbide MXenes (Mo2CTx; Tx= O, F, S) as efficient sensors towards selected CWAs, such as arsine (AsH3), mustard gas (C4H8Cl2S), cyanogen chloride (NCCl), and phosgene (COCl2) bo…
We have investigated by means of high-pressure x-ray diffraction the structural stability of Pd2Mo3N, Ni2Mo3C0.52N0.48, Co3Mo3C0.62N0.38, and Fe3Mo3C. We have found that they remain stable in their ambient-pressure cubic phase at least up to 48 GPa. All of them have a bulk modulus larger than 330 GPa, being the least compressible material Fe3Mo3C, B0 = 374(3) GPa. In addition, apparently a reduction of compressibility is detected as the carbon content increased. The equation of state for each material is determined. A comparison with other refractory materials indicates that interstitial nitri…
Identifying the existence of specific functional groups in MXenes is a difficult topic that has perplexed researchers for a long time. We show in this paper that in the case of magnetic MXenes, the magneto-transport properties of the material provide an easy solution. One of the fascinating properties that MXenes offer is the realization of intrinsic ferromagnetism which is important for two-dimensional (2D) materials family. The previous reports have only made a few statements on some MXenes citing its usefulness for spintronics related applications. Here, using first-principle calculations w…
The properties of MXenes, a new group of quasi-two-dimensional d-metal carbide or nitride nanomaterials derived by chemical exfoliation from the MAX phases, can be very sensitive to the presence of surface functional groups. Herein, the MXenes Ti2C and Ti3C2 functionalized by methoxy groups are considered by means of the density functional theory tight-binding method. Their structural, electronic properties, and relative stability are discussed in comparison with related and experimentally fabricated hydroxy derivatives of MXenes.
Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS$_2$) has been recognized as a potential substitution of Platinum (Pt) for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the broad adoption of MoS$_2$ is hindered by its limited number of active sites and relatively low inherent electrical conductivity. In this work, we demonstrated a synergistic enhancement of both active site exposure and electrical conductivity by a one-step solvothermal synthesis technique. The 1T-phase enriched MoS$_2$ was directly formed on the titanium carbide (Ti$_3$C$_2$Tx, MXene) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) acting as crosslinks…
Recent chemical exfoliation of layered MAX phase compounds to novel two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, so called MXenes, has brought new opportunity to materials science and technology. This review highlights the computational attempts that have been made to understand the physics and chemistry of this very promising family of advanced two-dimensional materials, and to exploit their novel and exceptional properties for electronic and energy harvesting applications.
MXenes are technologically interesting 2D materials that show potential in numerous applications. The properties of the MXenes depend at large extent on the selection of elements that build the 2D MX-layer. Another key parameter for tuning the attractive material properties is the species that terminate the surfaces of the MX-layers. Although being an important parameter, experimental studies on the bonding between the MX-layers and the termination species are few and thus an interesting subject of investigation. Here we show that the termination species fluorine (F) bonds to the Ti3C2-surface…
Despite the interest in MXenes in the last decade, all of the MXenes reported have a random mixture of surface terminations (-O, -OH, -F). In addition, restacked films have turbostratic disorder and often contain ions, solvent, and other species in between their layers. Here we report Y2CF2, a layered crystal with a unit cell isostructural to a MXene, in which layers are capped only by fluoride anions. We directly synthesize the 3D crystal through a high-temperature solid-state reaction, which affords the 3D crystal in high yield and purity and ensures that only fluoride ions terminate the lay…
Owing to its outstanding electronic properties, black phosphorus (BP) is considered as a promising material for next-generation optoelectronic devices. In this work, devices based on BP/MXene (Zrn+1CnT2, T = O, F, OH, n = 1, 2) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are designed via first-principles calculations. Zrn+1CnT2 compositions with appropriate work functions lead to the formation of Ohmic contact with BP in the vertical direction. Low Schottky barriers are found along the lateral direction in BP/Zr2CF2, BP/Zr2CO2H2, BP/Zr3C2F2, and BP/Zr3C2O2H2 bilayers, and BP/Zr3C2O2 even exhibits Ohm…
Hybrid materials of MXenes (2D carbides and nitrides) and transition-metal oxides (TMOs) have shown great promise in electrical energy storage and 2D heterostructures have been proposed as the next-generation electrode materials to expand the limits of current technology. Here we use first principles density functional theory to investigate the interfacial structure, energetics, and electronic properties of the heterostructures of MXenes (Tin+1CnT2; T=terminal groups) and anatase TiO2. We find that the greatest work-function differences are between OH-terminated-MXene (1.6 eV) and anatase TiO2…
MXene transition-metal carbides and nitrides are of growing interest for energy storage applications. These compounds are especially promising for use as pseudocapacitive electrodes due to their ability to convert energy electrochemically at fast rates. Using voltage-dependent cluster expansion models, we predict the charge storage performance of MXene pseudocapacitors for a range of electrode compositions. $M_3C_2O_2$ electrodes based on group-VI transition metals have up to 80% larger areal energy densities than prototypical titanium-based ( e.g. $Ti_3C_2O_2$) MXene electrodes. We attribute …
The 4d-transition-metals carbides (ZrC, NbC) and nitrides (ZrN, NbN) in the rocksalt structure, as well as their ternary alloys, have been recently studied by means of a first-principles full potential linearized augmented plane waves method within the local density approximation. These materials are important because of their interesting mechanical and physical properties, which make them suitable for many technological applications. Here, by using a simple theoretical model, we estimate the bulk moduli of their ternary alloys Zr$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$C and Zr$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$N in terms of the bulk modul…
Extensive density-functional calculations are performed to understand atomic chemisorption on the TiC(111) and TiN(111) surfaces, in particular the calculated pyramid-shaped trends in the adsorption energies for second- and third-period adatoms. Our previously proposed concerted-coupling model for chemisorption on TiC(111) is tested against new results for adsorption on TiN(111) and found to apply on this surface as well, thus reflecting both similarities and differences in electronic structure between the two compounds.
Four anti-perovskite-type compounds, ZnNNi3, ZnCNi3, SnNCo3, and SnCCo3, are synthesised through reactions between ingredient metal oxides and organic compound melamine (C3H6N6). ZnNNi3 and ZnCNi3 are selectively synthesised by choosing different reaction temperatures and nominal oxide-to-melamine ratios. SnNCo3 is synthesised for the first time by this melamine method. Resistivity, magnetisation, and heat capacity measurements reveal that SnNCo3 is a correlated metal with a high density of states at the Fermi level. Our results demonstrate that this feasible synthetic route using melamine is …
Transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) are a newly developing class of two-dimensional (2D) materials with technically robust properties that can be finely tuned by planar surface functionalization. Herein, the critical role of oxygen (O-) functionalization on the tensile mechanical characteristics of thinnest 2D Ti2C MXene is explored by molecular dynamic (MD) simulation with first-principle based ReaxFF forcefield. It is demonstrated that Ti2C sheet shows unique tensile mechanical behaviors that pronouncedly vary with the content of O-functionalization and stretching direction. Upon bot…
By means of first-principles calculations, the structural stability, mechanical properties and electronic structure of the newly synthesized incompressible Re2C, Re2N, Re3N and an analogous compound Re3C have been investigated. Our results agree well with the available experimental and theoretical data. The proposed Re3C is shown to be energetically, mechanically and dynamically stable and also incompressible. Furthermore, it is suggested that the incompressibility of these compounds is originated from the strong covalent bonding character with the hybridization of 5d orbital of Re and the 2p …
The elastic properties of the $B_1$-structured transition-metal nitrides and their carbide counterparts are studied using the {\it ab initio\} density functional perturbation theory. The linear response results of elastic constants are in excellent agreement with those obtained from numerical derivative methods, and are also consistent with measured data. We find the following trends: (1) Bulk moduli $B$ and tetragonal shear moduli $G^{\prime}=(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$, increase and lattice constants $a_{0}$ decrease rightward or downward on the Periodic Table for the metal component or if C is repla…
MXenes are rapidly emerging two-dimensional (2D) materials with thickness, composition, and functionalization-dependent outstanding properties having applications in diverse fields. To disclose nano-spintronic applications of 2D-double transition metal (DTM) carbide and nitride-based pristine and surface-functionalized MXenes (M'2M"X2Tx, M' and M" = Cr, Mo, W; X = C/N; T = -F/-OH/=O), a systematic investigation has been performed on structural stability, magnetic properties and electronic structure using spin-polarized first-principles calculations. 36 stables functionalized MXenes were screen…
Extensive density-functional calculations on atomic chemisorption of H, B, C, N, O, F, Al, Si, P, S, and Cl on the polar TiC(111) and TiN(111) yield similar adsorption trends for the two surfaces: (i) pyramid-like adsorption-energy trends along the adatom periods; (ii) strongest adsorption for O, C, N, S, and F; (iii) large adsorption variety; (iv) record-high adsorption energy for O (8.4-8.8 eV). However, a stronger adsorption on TiN is found for elements on the left of the periodic table and on TiC for elements on the right. The results support that a concerted-coupling model, proposed for c…
MXenes, a family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, have various tunable physical and chemical properties. Their diverse prospective applications in electronics and energy storage devices have triggered great interests in science and technology. MXenes can be functionalized by different surface terminations. Some O and F functionalized MXenes monolayers have been predicted to be topological insulators (TIs). However, the reported OH functionalized MXenes TIs are very few and their electronic structures need to be investigated in more detail. It has been revealed that th…
Two-dimensional carbides and nitrides of transition metals, known as MXenes, are a fast-growing family of 2D materials that draw attention as energy storage materials. So far, MXenes are mainly prepared from Al-containing MAX phases (where A = Al) by Al dissolution in F-containing solution, but most other MAX phases have not been explored. Here, a redox-controlled A-site-etching of MAX phases in Lewis acidic melts is proposed and validated by the synthesis of various MXenes from unconventional MAX phase precursors with A elements Si, Zn, and Ga. A negative electrode of Ti3C2 MXene material obt…
We perform both lattice dynamics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate the existence of topologically protected phonon modes in a two-dimensional, monolayer hexagonal boron nitride sheet. The topological phonon modes are found to be localized at an in-plane interface that divides the system into two regions of distinct valley Chern numbers. The dispersion of this topological phonon mode crosses over the frequency gap [1123, 1278] cm^{-1}, which is opened through analogy with the quantum valley Hall effect by breaking inversion symmetry of the boron and nitride atoms in the…
We present a calculational method to predict terminations of growing or as-deposited surfaces as a function of the deposition conditions. Such characterizations are valuable for understanding catalysis and growth phenomena. The method combines ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental thermodynamical data with a rate-equations description of partial pressures in the reaction chamber. The use of rate equations enables a complete description of a complex gas environment in terms of a few, (experimentally accessible) parameters. The predictions are based on compariso…
Realizing high-performance nanoelectronics requires control of materials at the nanoscale. Methods to produce high quality epitaxial graphene (EG) nanostructures on silicon carbide are known. The next step is to grow Van der Waals semiconductors on top of EG nanostructures. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a honeycomb lattice structure that matches that of graphene, making it ideally suited for graphene-based nanoelectronics. Here, we describe the preparation and characterization of multilayer h-BN grown epitaxially on EG using a migration-enhanced metalorgan…
The family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, so called MXenes, has recently found new members with ordered double transition metals M$'_2$M$"$C$_2$, where M$'$ and M$"$ stand for transition metals. Here, using a set of first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that some of the newly added members, oxide M$'_2$M$"$C$_2$ (M$'$= Mo, W; M$"$= Ti, Zr, Hf) MXenes, are topological insulators. The nontrivial topological states of the predicted MXenes are revealed by the $Z_2$ index, which is evaluated from the parities of the occupied bands below the Fermi energy at time reversal invar…
Schwarzites are porous structures that present negative Gaussian curvatures. Although initially proposed for carbon, in principle, schwarzites of other elements are possible. In this work, we have carried out a detailed investigation of the effect of element composition (C, Ge, Si, SiC, and BN) on the structural, electronic and optical properties of a gyroid schwarzite structure, the so-called G688. The DFT simulations were carried out using the well-known SIESTA code. Our results showed that formation energy values are in similar range of other related allotrope structures and are thermally s…
