NaCl is a diatomic molecule with a large dipole moment, which allows for its detection even at relatively small abundances. It has been detected towards several evolved stars, among which is the AGB star IK Tau, around which it is distributed in several clumps that lie off-center from the star. We aim to study the three-dimensional distribution of NaCl around the AGB star IK Tau, and to obtain the abundance of NaCl relative to H$_2$ for each of the clumps. First, a new value for the maximum expansion velocity is determined. The observed ALMA channel maps are then deprojected to create a three-dimensional model of the distribution of NaCl. This model is then used as input for the radiative transfer modelling code magritte, which is used to obtain the NaCl abundances of each of the clumps by comparing the observations with the results of the magritte simulations. Additionally, the rotational temperature of the clumps is determined using population diagrams. We derive an updated value for the maximum expansion velocity of IK Tau $\upsilon_\mathrm{exp}$ = 28.4 km/s. A spiral-like shape can be discerned in our three-dimensional distribution model of the NaCl. This spiral lies more or less in the plane of the sky. The distribution is also flatter in the line-of-sight direction than in the plane of the sky. We find clump abundances between $9 \times 10^{-9}$ and $5 \times 10^{-8}$ relative to H$_2$, where the relative abundance is typically lower for clumps closer to the star. For the first time, we used deprojection to understand the three-dimensional environment of an AGB star and calculated the fractional abundance of NaCl in clumps surrounding the star.
Context. AGB stars go through a process of strong mass-loss that involves pulsations of the atmosphere, which extends to a region where the conditions are adequate for dust grains to form. Radiation pressure acts on these grains which, coupled to the gas, drive a massive outflow. The details of this process are not clear, including which molecules are involved in the condensation of dust grains. Aims. To study the role of the SiO molecule in the process of dust formation and mass-loss in M-type AGB stars. Methods. Using the IRAM NOEMA interferometer we observed the $^{28}$SiO and $^{29}$SiO $J…
Low- and intermediate-mass stars at the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) are known to be prevalent dust providers to galaxies. However, the mechanisms responsible for the formation and acceleration of dust in the cool extended atmospheres of AGB stars are still open to debate. We present visible polarimetric imaging observations of the oxygen-rich AGB star IK Tau obtained with SPHERE-ZIMPOL (phase 0.27) as well as interferometric observations with AMBER. IK Tau was observed with ZIMPOL at three wavelengths in the pseudo-continuum (645, 748, and 820 nm), in the H$α$ line at 656.3 nm, and in the Ti…
We present and analyse SO and SO$_2$, recently observed with high angular resolution and sensitivity in a spectral line survey with ALMA, for two oxygen-rich AGB stars: the low mass-loss rate R Dor and high mass-loss rate IK Tau. We analyse 8 lines of SO detected towards both stars, 78 lines of SO$_2$detected towards R Dor and 52 lines of SO$_2$ detected towards IK Tau. We detect several lines of $^{34}$SO, $^{33}$SO and $^{34}$SO$_2$ towards both stars, and tentatively S$^{18}$O towards R Dor, and hence derive isotopic ratios for these species. The spatially resolved observations show us that…
We report on our search for spectroscopic binaries among a sample of AGB stars. Observations were carried out in the framework of the monitoring of radial velocities of (candidate) binary stars performed at the Mercator 1.2m telescope, using the HERMES spectrograph. We found evidence for duplicity in UV Cam, TU Tau, BL Ori, VZ Per, T Dra, and V Hya. This short communication focus on V Hya, found to behave like RV Tau of the b subtype, which are binaries surrounded by a disc.
We aim to determine the distributions of molecular SiS and CS in the circumstellar envelopes of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch stars and how these distributions differ between stars that lose mass at different rates. In this study we analyse ALMA observations of SiS and CS emission lines for three oxygen-rich galactic AGB stars: IK Tau, with a moderately high mass-loss rate of $5\times10^{-6}$M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, and W Hya and R Dor with low mass loss rates of $\sim1\times10^{-7}$M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. These molecules are usually more abundant in carbon stars but the high sensitivity of ALM…
Using ALMA, we observed the stellar wind of two oxygen-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, IK Tau and R Dor, between 335 and 362 GHz. One aim was to detect metal oxides and metal hydroxides (AlO, AlOH, FeO, MgO, MgOH), some of which are thought to be direct precursors of dust nucleation and growth. We report on the potential first detection of FeO (v=0, Omega=4, J=11-10) in RDor (mass-loss rate, Mdot, ~1e-7 Msun/yr). The presence of FeO in IK Tau (Mdot~5e-6 Msun/yr) cannot be confirmed due to a blend with 29SiS, a molecule that is absent in R Dor. The detection of AlO in R Dor and of AlO…
We present ALMA continuum and molecular line emission maps at $\sim$1 mm of OH 231.8, a well studied bipolar nebula around an AGB star. The excellent angular resolution of our maps ($\sim$20 mas) allows us to scrutinise the central nebular regions of OH 231.8, which hold the clues to unravel how this iconic object assembled its complex nebular architecture. We report, for the first time in this object and others of its kind, the discovery of a rotating circumbinary disk selectively traced by NaCl, KCl, and H$_2$O emission lines. This represents the first detection of KCl in an oxygen-rich AGB …
We performed a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of two RV Tauri stars GK Car and GZ Nor. Both objects are surrounded by hot circumstellar dust. Their pulsation periods, derived from ASAS photometric time series, have been used to derive their luminosities and distances via the PLC relation. In addition, for both objects, GAIA distances are available. The Gaia distances and luminosities are consistent with the values obtained from the PLC relationship. GK Car is at distance of 4.5$\pm{1.3}$ kpc and has a luminosity of 1520$\pm{840}$ L$_{\odot}$, while GZ Nor is at distance of 8.4$\pm{2.3}…
The nucleosynthesis production of fluorine (F) is still a matter of debate. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are one of the main candidates for F production. However, their contribution to the total F budget is not fully known due to the lack of observations. In this paper, we report the detection of AlF line emission, one of the two main carriers of F in the gas-phase in the outflow of evolved stars, towards five nearby oxygen-rich AGB stars, $o$ Ceti, R Leo, IK Tau, R Dor, and W Hya. From spatially resolved observations, we estimated the AlF emitting region with a radius $\sim11R_{\star}$…
We present a high resolution detailed abundance analysis for a sample of six post-AGB candidate stars, five of them had not been studied spectroscopically in the optical region. All the analyzed objects are IRAS sources identified as possible post-AGB on the two-colours IRAS diagram. We find three objects with clear signs of evolved stars; IRAS 05338-3051 shows abundances similar to the RV Tauri V453 Oph; the lower-luminosity stars IRAS 18025 - 3906 is O-rich without s-process enrichment and IRAS 18386 - 1253 shows a moderate selective depletion of refractory elements generally seen in post-AG…
Our current insights into the circumstellar chemistry of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are largely based on studies of carbon-rich stars and stars with high mass-loss rates. In order to expand the current molecular inventory of evolved stars we present a spectral scan of the nearby, oxygen-rich star R Dor, a star with a low mass-loss rate ($\sim2\times10^{-7}M_{\odot}$/yr). We carried out a spectral scan in the frequency ranges 159.0-321.5GHz and 338.5-368.5 GHz (wavelength range 0.8-1.9mm) using the SEPIA/Band-5 and SHeFI instruments on the APEX telescope and we compare it to previous s…
Optically visible post-AGB/RGB stars and young stellar objects in the Small Magellanic Cloud: candidate selection, spectral energy distributions and spectroscopic examination
A spectral line and imaging survey of the low mass-loss rate AGB star R Dor (Mdot ~ 1e-7 Msun/yr) and the high mass-loss rate AGB star IK Tau (Mdot ~5e-6 Msun/yr) was made with ALMA between 335 and 362 GHz at a spatial resolution of ~150 mas, corresponding to the locus of the main dust formation region of both targets. Some 200 spectral features from 15 molecules (and their isotopologues) were observed, including rotational lines in both the ground and vibrationally excited states. Detected species include the gaseous precursors of dust grains such as SiO, AlO, AlOH, TiO, and TiO2. We present …
We report the detection and investigate the properties of high-excitation lambda-doubling line emission of hydroxyl (OH) detected towards three asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (W Hya, R Dor, and IK Tau) using ALMA. The OH lines are produced very close to the central stars and seem optically thin and with no maser effect. We analyse the molecular excitation using population diagrams and find rotational temperatures of $\sim 2500$ K and column densities of $\sim 10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ for both W Hya and R Dor. For W Hya, we observe emission from vibrationally excited H2O arising from the same re…

We discuss the observed pulsation properties of Type II Cepheids (TIICs) in the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds. The period (P) distributions, luminosity amplitudes and population ratios of the three different sub-groups (BL Herculis[BLH, P<5 days], W Virginis [WV, 5<P<20 days], RV Tauri [RVT, P>20 days]) are quite similar in different stellar systems, suggesting a common evolutionary channel and a mild dependence on both metallicity and environment. We present a homogeneous theoretical framework based on Horizontal Branch (HB) evolutionary models, envisaging that TIICs are mainly old (t<10 Gyr),…
Rotational transitions in vibrationally excited AlO and TiO -- two possible precursors of dust -- were observed in the 300 GHz range (1 mm wavelength) towards the oxygen rich AGB stars R Dor and IK Tau with ALMA, and vibrationally excited AlO was observed towards the red supergiant VY CMa with the SMA. The $J=11 \to 10$ transition of TiO in the $v=1~{\rm{and}}~2$ levels, and the $N = 9 \to 8$ transition in the $v=2$ level of AlO were identified towards R Dor; the $J=11 \to 10$ line of TiO was identified in the $v=1$ level towards IK Tau; and two transitions in the $v=1~{\rm{and}}~2$ levels of …
