A high-gain extended observer is designed for a class of nonlinear uncertain systems. This observer has the ability of estimating system uncertainty, and it can be used to estimate the derivatives of signal up to order n. The controller based on this extended observer can make the tracking error and its derivatives converge to zero rapidly even when uncertainties and disturbances exist. The result of simulation indicates that this method has satisfactory control performance for nonlinear uncertain systems.
This paper proposes a novel unit-quaternion observer-based controller for attitude tracking (attitude and angular velocity) with guaranteed transient and steady-state performance. The proposed approach is computationally cheap and can operate based on measurements provided, for instance by a typical low-cost inertial measurement unit (IMU) or magnetic, angular rate, and gravity (MARG) sensor without the knowledge of angular velocity. First, an observer evolved on $\mathbb{S}^{3}\times\mathbb{R}^{3}$ is developed guaranteeing asymptotic stability of the closed loop error signals starting from a…
In this paper, we present a Nonlinear-Proportional Integrator (N-PI) disturbance observer (DOB) to enhance the motion tracking of the performance of a surface-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (SPMSM) in rapidly speed varying regions. By presenting an N-PI-DOB for load torque estimation with torque modulation technique, we show that the tracking error dynamics of angular position/velocity are coupled with tracking errors of currents loop and estimation errors. After analyzing disturbances of currents tracking error dynamics, we design the N-PI-DOB and Lyapunov-based nonlinear currents…
The rigid-body attitude tracking using vector and biased gyro measurements with unknown inertia matrix is studied in this note. First, a gyro-bias observer with global exponential stability is designed. Then, an attitude tracking controller based on this observer is devised, ensuring almost global asymptotic stability and almost semiglobal exponential stability. A separation property of the combined observer-controller is proved. Lastly, an adaptive attitude tracking controller relying on a modified gyro-bias observer and with no over-parametrization is developed to deal with the unknown inert…
In this paper, a novel adaptive smooth disturbance observer-based fast finite-time adaptive backstepping control scheme is presented for the attitude tracking of the 3-DOF helicopter system subject to compound disturbances. First, an adaptive smooth disturbance observer (ASDO) is proposed to estimate the composite disturbance, which owns the characteristics of smooth output, fast finite-time convergence, and adaptability to the disturbance of unknown derivative boundary. Then, a finite-time backstepping control protocol is construct to drive the elevation and pitch angles to track reference tr…
The spacecraft attitude tracking problem is addressed with actuator faults and uncertainties among inertias, external disturbances, and, in particular, state estimates. A continuous sliding mode attitude controller is designed using attitude and angular velocity estimates from an arbitrary stable stand-alone observer. Rigorous analysis shows that the controller ensures robust stability of the entire closed-loop system as long as the observer yields state estimates with uniformly ultimately bounded estimation errors. In addition, a sequential Lyapunov analysis is utilized to obtain a convergent…
In this article, the observer-based coordinated tracking control problem for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems(MASs) with intermittent communication and information constraints is studied under dynamic switching topology. First, a state observer is designed to estimate the unmeasurable actual state information in the system. Second, adjustable heterogeneous coupling weighting parameters are introduced in the dynamic switching topology, and the distributed coordinated tracking control protocol under heterogeneous coupling framework is proposed. Then, a new Lemma is constructed to realize…
We study a trajectory tracking problem for a multi-rotor in the presence of modeling error and external disturbances. The desired trajectory is unknown and generated from a reference system with unknown or partially known dynamics. We assume that only position and orientation measurements for the multi-rotor and position measurements for the reference system can be accessed. We adopt an extended high-gain observer (EHGO) estimation framework to estimate the feed-forward term required for trajectory tracking, the multi-rotor states, as well as modeling error and external disturbances. We design…
The unknown sharp changes of vehicle acceleration rates, also called the unknown jerk dynamics, may significantly affect the driving performance of the leader vehicle in a platoon, resulting in more drastic car-following movements in platooning tracking control, which could cause safety and traffic capacity concerns. To address these issues, in this paper, we investigate cooperative platooning tracking control and intermittent optimization problems for connected automated vehicles (CAVs) with a nonlinear car-following model. We assume that the external inputs of the leader CAV contain unknown …
Observer-Assisted Relative-Velocity Compensation with LPV-$H_\infty$ Robust Correction for 3D Trajectory Tracking of Underactuated Non-Minimum-Phase AUVs under Ocean Currents
This paper introduces a novel $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$-optimal interval observer synthesis for bounded-error/uncertain locally Lipschitz nonlinear continuous-time (CT) and discrete-time (DT) systems with noisy nonlinear observations. Specifically, using mixed-monotone decompositions, the proposed observer is correct by construction, i.e., the interval estimates readily frame the true states without additional constraints or procedures. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions for input-to-state (ISS) stability of the proposed observer and for minimizing the $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ gain of th…
An Improved ESO-Based Line-of-Sight Guidance Law for Path Following of Underactuated Autonomous Underwater Helicopter With Nonlinear Tracking Differentiator and Anti-saturation Controller
This paper proposes a disturbance-observer-based control (DOBC) scheme for frequency and voltage regulation for a renewable energy sources (RES) integrated power systems. The proposed approach acts a feed-forward control which improves the dynamic performance of the conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. Robustness of the proposed control scheme has been validated through simulations under worst-case and stochastic uncertainties to mitigate real-time variability in RES output and load. The performance of the proposed control technique is compared to well established te…

Limited information availability represents a fundamental challenge for control of multi-agent systems, since an agent often lacks sensing capabilities to measure certain states of its own and can exchange data only with its neighbors. The challenge becomes even greater when agents are governed by high-order dynamics. The present work is motivated to conduct control design for linear and nonlinear high-order leader-follower multi-agent systems in a context where only the first state of an agent is measured. To address this open challenge, we develop novel distributed observers to enable follow…
The time-varying output formation tracking for the heterogeneous multi-agent systems (MAS) is investigated in this paper. First, a distributed observer is constructed for followers to estimate the states of the leader, which can ensure that the estimation error converges to the origin in the prescribed time. Then, the local formation controller is designed for each follower based on the estimation of the observer, under which, the formation errors converge to the origin in the prescribed time as well. That is, the settling time of the whole system can be predefined in advance. It's noted that …
Proper operation of the Active Disturbance Rejection (ADR) controller requires a precise determination of the so-called total disturbance affecting the considered dynamical system, usually estimated by the Extended State Observer (ESO). The observation quality of total disturbance has a significant impact on the control error values, making room for a potential improvement of control system performance using different structures of ESO. In this article, we provide a quantitative comparison between the Luenberger and Astolfi/Marconi (AM) observers designed for three different extended state rep…
This work provides a framework for nonlinear model-free control of systems with unknown input-output dynamics, but outputs that can be controlled by the inputs. This framework leads to real-time control of the system such that a feasible output trajectory can be tracked by the inputs. Unlike existing model-free or data-driven control approaches, this framework guarantees nonlinear stability. The controller and observer designs in the proposed framework are nonlinearly stable and robust to the unknown dynamics as well as unknown measurement noise. For ease of computer implementation, the framew…
This paper studies cooperative tracking problem of heterogeneous Euler-Lagrange systems with an uncertain leader. Different from most existing works, system dynamic knowledge of the leader node is unaccessible to any follower node in our paper. Distributed adaptive observers are designed for all follower nodes, simultaneously estimate the state and parameters of the leader node. The observer design does not rely on the frequency knowledge of the leader node, and the estimation errors are shown to converge to zero exponentially. Moreover, the results are applied to general directed graphs, wher…
In this paper we are interested in the problem of adaptive state observation of linear time-varying (LTV) systems where the system and the input matrices depend on unknown time-varying parameters. It is assumed that these parameters satisfy some known LTV dynamics, but with unknown initial conditions. Moreover, the state equation is perturbed by an additive signal generated from an exosystem with uncertain constant parameters. Our main contribution is to propose a globally convergent state observer that requires only a weak excitation assumption on the system.
The paper solves the problem of tracking control of a quadrotor with unmeasurable pitch and roll angles based on the geometric approach with the use of the enhanced extended observer and the internal model. The proposed approach makes it possible to ensure the movement of a quadrotor in a horizontal plane along a trajectory given in the form of a sinusoidal or second-order polynomial function with semiglobal asymptotic convergence of the tracking errors to zero.
The paper considers the design of a nonlinear dissipative impulsive observer based on non-periodic discrete-time measurements. Sufficient conditions are derived for (i) exponential convergence of the observer in absence of measurement uncertainty, and (ii) input-to-state stability (ISS) with respect to measurement uncertainty, by combining notions from impulsive and dissipative systems theory. The conditions mainly include constraints on the minimum and maximum time between measurements depending on system characteristics, the correction gain and the desired ISS gain. A representative case exa…

The Kalman filter computes the optimal variable-gain using prior knowledge of the initial state and random (process and measurement) noise distributions, which are assumed to be Gaussian with known variance. However, when these distributions are unknown, the Kalman filter is not necessarily optimal and other simpler state-estimators, such as fixed-gain (α, α-\b{eta} or α-\b{eta}-γ etc.) filters may be sufficient. When such filters are used as low-complexity state-estimators in embedded tracking systems, the fixed gain parameters are usually set equal to the steady-state gains of the correspond…
A high-gain observer-based cooperative deterministic learning (CDL) control algorithm is proposed in this chapter for a group of identical unicycle-type unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to track over desired reference trajectories. For the vehicle states, the positions of the vehicles can be measured, while the velocities are estimated using the high-gain observer. For the trajectory tracking controller, the radial basis function (RBF) neural network (NN) is used to online estimate the unknown dynamics of the vehicle, and the NN weight convergence and estimation accuracy is guaranteed by CDL. T…
