The rigid-body attitude tracking using vector and biased gyro measurements with unknown inertia matrix is studied in this note. First, a gyro-bias observer with global exponential stability is designed. Then, an attitude tracking controller based on this observer is devised, ensuring almost global asymptotic stability and almost semiglobal exponential stability. A separation property of the combined observer-controller is proved. Lastly, an adaptive attitude tracking controller relying on a modified gyro-bias observer and with no over-parametrization is developed to deal with the unknown inertia matrix. The proposed control schemes require neither an explicit attitude representation nor any attitude estimation, but only the measurement of at least two non-collinear known inertial reference vectors and biased gyro rate, which can be obtained by common low-cost IMU sensors. Simulations are included to illustrate the proposed adaptive controller under noisy measurements.
We design a reduced attitude controller for reorienting the spin axis of a gyroscope in a geometric control framework. The proposed controller preserves the inherent gyroscopic stability associated with a spinning axis-symmetric rigid body. The equations of motion are derived in two frames: a non-spinning frame to show the gyroscopic stability, and a body-fixed spinning frame for deriving the controller. The proposed controller is designed such that it retains the gyroscopic stability structure in the closed loop and renders the desired equilibrium almost-globally asymptotically stable. Due to…
This paper addresses the global exponential attitude tracking of a spacecraft when gyro measurements are corrupted by bias. Based on contraction analysis, an exponentially convergent nonlinear observer is designed first to estimate the gyro bias. Relying on this bias estimator and the quaternion logarithm representation of the tracking error, an exponentially globally convergent controller is devised. This controller stabilizes the unique equilibrium of the closed-loop system, where the tracking error is the unit quaternion. For more energy-efficiency and enhancing the robustness in the presen…
Recent successes in the deployment of sails in space have reduced the risk associated with solar sailing missions. The attitude control requirements for a solar sailing mission is low with only slow attitude maneuvers needed to maintain a stable attitude and produce a required solar thrust. Future science missions will require large attitude maneuvers with a fully deployed sail. This article investigates the current options for attitude control on solar sails and proposes a gyro-controlled solar sailing. This concept uses a spinning solar sail to construct a control moment gyroscope capable to…
The paper addresses the problem of attitude estimation for rigid bodies using (possibly time-varying) vector measurements, for which we provide a necessary and sufficient condition of distinguishability. Such a condition is shown to be strictly weaker than those previously used for attitude observer design. Thereafter, we show that even for the single vector case the resulting condition is sufficient to design almost globally convergent attitude observers, and two explicit designs are obtained. To overcome the weak excitation issue, the first design employs to make full use of historical infor…

We use Reinforcement Meta-Learning to optimize an adaptive integrated guidance, navigation, and control system suitable for exoatmospheric interception of a maneuvering target. The system maps observations consisting of strapdown seeker angles and rate gyro measurements directly to thruster on-off commands. Using a high fidelity six degree-of-freedom simulator, we demonstrate that the optimized policy can adapt to parasitic effects including seeker angle measurement lag, thruster control lag, the parasitic attitude loop resulting from scale factor errors and Gaussian noise on angle and rotatio…
This paper proposes a solution to the attitude tracking problem for a novel quadrotor tailsitter unmanned aerial vehicle called swiveling biplane quadrotor. The proposed vehicle design addresses the lack of yaw control authority in conventional biplane quadrotor tailsitters by proposing a new design wherein two wings with two attached propellers are joined together with a rod through a swivel mechanism. The yaw torque is generated by relative rotation of the thrust vector of each wing. The unique design of this configuration having two rigid bodies interconnected through a rod with zero torsio…
Time-equispaced inertial measurements are practically used as inputs for motion determination. Polynomial interpolation is a common technique of recovering the gyroscope signal but is subject to a fundamentally numerical stability problem due to the Runge effect on equispaced samples. This paper reviews the theoretical results of Runge phenomenon in related areas and proposes a straightforward borrowing-and-cutting (BAC) strategy to depress it. It employs the neighboring samples for higher-order polynomial interpolation but only uses the middle polynomial segment in the actual time interval. T…

This paper presents a novel method for attitude estimation of an object in 3D space by incremental learning of the Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) network. Gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer are few widely used sensors in attitude estimation applications. Traditionally, multi-sensor fusion methods such as the Extended Kalman Filter and Complementary Filter are employed to fuse the measurements from these sensors. However, these methods exhibit limitations in accounting for the uncertainty, unpredictability, and dynamic nature of the motion in real-world situations. In this paper, the ine…
The problem of estimating the angular speed of a solid body from attitude measurements is addressed. To solve this problem, we propose an observer whose dynamics are not constrained to evolve on any specific manifold. This drastically simplifies the analysis of the proposed observer. Using Lyapunov analysis, sufficient conditions for global asymptotic stability of a set wherein the estimation error is equal to zero are established. In addition, the proposed methodology is adapted to deal with angular speed estimation for systems evolving on the unit circle. The approach is illustrated through …

In recent decades, one of the scientists' main concerns has been to improve the accuracy of satellite attitude, regardless of the expense. The obvious result is that a large number of control strategies have been used to address this problem. In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy integrated (ANFIS) satellite attitude estimation and control system was developed. The controller is trained with the data provided by an optimal controller. A pulse modulator is used to generate the right ON/OFF commands of the thruster actuator. To evaluate the performance of the AN-FIS controller in closed-loop si…
This paper deals with the problem of full state estimation for vehicles navigating in a three dimensional space. We assume that the vehicle is equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) providing body-frame measurements of the angular velocity, the specific force, and the Earth's magnetic field. Moreover, we consider available sensors that provide partial or full information about the position of the vehicle. Examples of such sensors are those which provide full position measurements (e.g., GPS), range measurements (e.g., Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) sensors), inertial-frame bearing measurement…
