We demonstrate how the stellar and nebular conditions in star-forming galaxies modulate the emission and spectral profile of HI Lya emission line. We examine the net Lya output, kinematics, and in particular emission of blue-shifted Lya radiation, using spectroscopy from with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on HST, giving a sample of 87 galaxies at redshift z=0.05-0.44. We contrast the Lya spectral measurements with properties of the ionized gas (from optical spectra) and stars (from stellar modeling). We demonstrate correlations of unprecedented strength between the Lya escape fraction (and equivalent width) and the ionization parameter (p~10^-15). The relative contribution of blue-shifted emission to the total Lya also increases from ~0 to ~40% over the range of O_32 ratios (p~10^-6). We also find particularly strong correlations with estimators of stellar age and nebular abundance, and weaker correlations regarding thermodynamic variables. Low ionization stage absorption lines suggest the Lya emission and line profile are predominantly governed by the column of absorbing gas near zero velocity. Simultaneous multi-parametric analysis over many variables shows we can predict 80% of the variance on Lya luminosity, and ~50% on the EW. We determine the most crucial predictive variables, finding that for tracers of the ionization state and Hb luminosity dominate the luminosity prediction whereas the Lya EW is best predicted by Hb EW and the Ha/Hb ratio. We discuss our results with reference to high redshift observations, focussing upon the use of Lya to probe the nebular conditions in high-z galaxies and cosmic reionization.
We present Lya and UV-nebular emission line properties of bright Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=6-7 with a luminosity of log L_Lya/[erg s-1] = 43-44 identified in the 21-deg2 area of the SILVERRUSH early sample developed with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey data. Our optical spectroscopy newly confirm 21 bright LAEs with clear Lya emission, and contribute to make a spectroscopic sample of 96 LAEs at z=6-7 in SILVERRUSH. From the spectroscopic sample, we select 7 remarkable LAEs as bright as Himiko and CR7 objects, and perform deep Keck/MOSFIRE and Subaru/nuMOIRCS near-infrared spectroscopy…
We revisit calculations of nebular hydrogen Lya and HeII 1640A line strengths for population III galaxies, undergoing continuous and bursts of star formation. We focus on initial mass functions (IMFs) motivated by recent theoretical studies, which generally span a lower range of stellar masses than earlier works. We also account for case-B departures and the stochastic sampling of the IMF. In agreement with previous works, we find that departures from case-B can enhance the Lya flux by a factor of a few, but we argue that this enhancement is driven mainly by collisional excitation and ionizati…
We present the results of a Lya profile analysis of 12 Lya emitters (LAEs) at z = 2.2 with high-resolution Lya spectra. We find that all 12 objects have a Lya profile with the main peak redward of the systemic redshift defined by nebular lines, and five have a weak, secondary peak blueward of the systemic redshift (blue bump). The average velocity offset of the red main peak (the blue bump, if any) with respect to the systemic redshift is Delta_v_Lya,r = 174+/- 19 km s-1 (Delta_v_Lya,b = -316+/-45 km s-1), which is smaller than (comparable to) that of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). The outflow v…
We study the Lya profiles of 36 spectroscopically-detected Lya-emitters (LAEs) at z2-3, using Keck MOSFIRE to measure systemic redshifts and velocity dispersions from rest-frame optical nebular emission lines. The sample has a median optical magnitude R=26.0, and ranges from R23 to R>27, corresponding to rest-frame UV absolute magnitudes M_UV-22 to M_UV>-18.2. Dynamical masses range from M_dyn<1.3e8 Msun to M_dyn=6.8e9 Msun, with a median value of M_dyn=6.3e8 Msun. Thirty of the 36 Lya emission lines are redshifted with respect to the systemic velocity with at least 1 sigma significance, and t…
To investigate the ingredients, which allow star-forming galaxies to present Lyalpha line in emission, we studied the kinematics and gas phase metallicity (Z) of the interstellar medium. We used multi-object NIR spectroscopy with Magellan/MMIRS to study nebular emission from z=2-3 star-forming galaxies discovered in 3 MUSYC fields. We detected emission lines from four active galactic nuclei and 13 high-z star-forming galaxies, including Halpha lines down to a flux of 4.E-17 erg/sec/cm^2. This yielded 7 new redshifts. The most common emission line detected is [OIII]5007, which is sensitive to Z…
We perform joint modeling of the composite rest-frame far-UV (FUV) and optical spectra of redshift 1.85<z<3.49 star-forming galaxies to deduce key properties of the massive stars, ionized ISM, and neutral ISM, with the aim of investigating the principal factors affecting the production and escape of Ly-alpha (Lya) photons. Our sample consists of 136 galaxies with deep Keck/LRIS and MOSFIRE spectra covering, respectively, Ly-beta through CIII] 1907, 1909; and [OII], [NeIII], H-beta, [OIII], H-alpha, [NII], and [SII]. Spectral and photoionization modeling indicate that the galaxies are uniformly…
This paper presents a detailed analysis of two giant Lyman-alpha (Lya) arcs detected near known galaxies at z=3.038 and z=3.754 lensed by the massive cluster MACS 1206 (z=0.44). The Lya nebulae revealed in deep MUSE observations exhibit a double-peak profile with a dominant red peak that indicates expansion/outflowing motions. One of the arcs stretches over 1' around the Einstein radius of the cluster, resolving the velocity field of the line-emitting gas on kpc scales around a group of three star-forming galaxies of 0.3-1.6L* at z=3.038. The second arc spans 15'' in size, roughly centered aro…
Aims: We aim to study the effects of an inhomogeneous interstellar medium (ISM) on the strength and the shape of the Lyman alpha (Lya) line in starburst galaxies. Methods: Using our 3D Monte Carlo Lya radiation transfer code, we study the radiative transfer of Lya, UV and optical continuum photons in homogeneous and clumpy shells of neutral hydrogen and dust surrounding a central source. Our simulations predict the Lya and continuum escape fraction, the Lya equivalent width EW(Lya), the Lya line profile and their dependence on the gas geometry and the main input physical parameters. Results: T…
We selected a sample of 76 Lya emitting galaxies from the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) at 2<z<4. We estimated the velocity of the neutral gas flowing out of the interstellar medium as the velocity offset, Deltav, between the systemic redshift (zsys) and the center of low-ionization absorption line systems (LIS). To increase the SN of VUDS spectra, we stacked subsamples. We measured the systemic redshift from the rest-frame UV spectroscopic data using the CIII]1908 nebular emission line, and we considered SiII1526 as the highest signal-to-noise LIS line. We calculated the Lya peak shift with …
We present the discovery of HLock01-LAB, a luminous and large Lya nebula at z=3.326. Medium-band imaging and long-slit spectroscopic observations with the Gran Telescopio Canarias reveal extended emission in the Lya 1215Å, CIV1550Å, and HeII 1640Ålines over ~100kpc, and a total luminosity L(Lya)=(6.4+/-0.1)x10^44 erg s^-1. HLock01-LAB presents an elongated morphology aligned with two faint radio sources contained within the central ~8kpc of the nebula. The radio structures are consistent to be faint radio jets or lobes of a central galaxy, whose spectrum shows nebular emission characteristic o…
We present Keck/OSIRIS laser guide-star assisted adaptive optics (LGSAO) integral field spectroscopy of [O III] 5007 Angstrom nebular emission from twelve galaxies hosting optically faint (R = 20 - 25; nuLnu ~ 10^44 -10^46 erg/s) active galactic nuclei (AGN) at redshift z ~ 2 - 3. In combination with deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 rest-frame optical imaging, Keck/MOSFIRE rest-optical spectroscopy, and Keck/KCWI rest-UV integral field spectroscopy we demonstrate that both the continuum and emission-line structure of these sources exhibit a wide range of morphologies from compac…

We present new Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph far-ultraviolet (far-UV) spectroscopy and Keck Echellete optical spectroscopy of 11 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), a rare population of local galaxies experiencing massive gas inflows, extreme starbursts, and prominent outflows. We detect H Lyman alpha emission from 8 ULIRGs and the companion to IRAS09583+4714. In contrast to the P Cygni profiles often seen in galaxy spectra, the H Lyman alpha profiles exhibit prominent, blueshifted emission out to Doppler shifts exceeding -1000 km/s in three HII-dominated and two AGN…

We present a study of the environment of 27 z=3-4.5 bright quasars from the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey. With medium-depth MUSE observations (4 hours on target per field), we characterise the effects of quasars on their surroundings by studying simultaneously the properties of extended gas nebulae and Lyalpha emitters (LAEs) in the quasar host haloes. We detect extended (up to ~ 100 kpc) Lyalpha emission around all MAGG quasars, finding a very weak redshift evolution between z=3 and z=6. By stacking the MUSE datacubes, we confidently detect extended emission of CIV and o…
We aim to determine the redshift of GDS-1408, the most solid z~7 galaxy candidate lying in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. We have used all the VLT spectra of GDS-1408 collected by us and two other groups with FORS2 at VLT in the last five years, for a total integration time of 52hr. The combined spectrum is the deepest ever obtained of a galaxy in the Reionization epoch. We do not detect any emission line or continuum over the whole wavelength range, up to 10100A. Based on an accurate set of simulations, we are able to put a stringent upper limit of f(Lya)<3x10^(-18) erg/s/cm2 at 3-9 sigma in th…
We present a VLT/X-Shooter spectroscopy of the Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy 'Ion2' at z=3.2121 and compare it to that of the recently discovered strongly lensed LyC-emitter at z=2.37, known as the 'Sunburst' arc. Three main results emerge from the X-Shooter spectrum: (a) the Lya has three distinct peaks with the central one at the systemic redshift, indicating a ionised tunnel through which both Lya and LyC radiation escape; (b) the large O32 oxygen index ([OIII]4959-5007 / [OII]3727-3729) of 9.18(-1.32/+1.82) is compatible to those measured in local (z~0.4) LyC leakers; (c) there are…
The Lyman alpha emission line is an essential diagnostic tool for probing galaxy formation and evolution. Not only is it commonly the strongest observable line from high-redshift galaxies but from its shape detailed information about its host galaxy can be revealed. However, due to the scattering nature of Lya photons increasing their path length in a non-trivial way, if dust is present in the galaxy the line may be severely suppressed and its shape altered. In order to interpret observations correctly, it is thus of crucial significance to know how much of the emitted light actually escapes t…
High-redshift Lyman-alpha blobs (LABs) are an enigmatic class of objects that have been the subject of numerous observational and theoretical investigations. It is of particular interest to determine the dominant power sources for the copious luminosity, as direct emission from HII regions, cooling gas, and fluorescence due to the presence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) can all contribute significantly. In this paper, we present the first theoretical model to consider all of these physical processes in an attempt to develop an evolutionary model for the origin of high-z LABs. This is achieved…
Distant luminous Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) are excellent targets for spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the epoch of reionisation (EoR). We present deep high-resolution (R=5000) VLT/X-SHOOTER observations, along with an extensive collection of photometric data of `COLA1', a proposed double peaked LAE at z=6.6 (Hu et al. 2016). We rule out that COLA1's emission line is an [OII] doublet at z=1.475 on the basis of i) the asymmetric red line-profile and flux ratio of the peaks (blue/red=$0.31\pm0.03$) and ii) an unphysical [OII]/Ha ratio ([OII]/Ha > 22). We show that COLA1's observed B-ba…
In the last few years, prominent high-ionization nebular emission lines (i.e., OIII], CIII], CIV, HeII) have been observed in the deep UV spectra of z~5-7 galaxies, indicating that extreme radiation fields characterize reionization-era systems. These lines have been linked to the leakage of Lyman continuum photons both theoretically and observationally. Consequently, high-ionization UV emission lines present our best probe to detect and characterize the most distant galaxies that we will observe in the coming years, and are key to understanding the sources of reionization, yet the physics gove…
High-energy emission associated with star formation has been proposed as a significant source of interstellar medium (ISM) ionization in low-metallicity starbursts and an important contributor to the heating of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the high-redshift ($z > 8$) Universe. Using Chandra observations of a sample of 30 galaxies at $D \approx$~200--450 Mpc that have high specific star-formation rates of 3--9 Gyr$^{-1}$ and metallicities near $Z \approx 0.3 Z_\odot$, we provide new measurements of the average 0.5--8 keV spectral shape and normalization per unit star-formation rate (SFR). …
Star-forming regions in galaxies are surrounded by vast reservoirs of gas capable of both emitting and absorbing Lyman-alpha (Lya) radiation. Observations of Lya emitters and spatially extended Lya haloes indeed provide insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies. However, due to the complexity of resonant scattering, only a few analytic solutions are known in the literature. We discuss several idealized but physically motivated scenarios to extend the existing formalism to new analytic solutions, enabling quantitative predictions about the transport and diffusion of Lya photons. Thi…
Star-forming galaxies form a sequence in the [OIII]/H-beta vs. [NII]/H-alpha diagnostic diagram, with low metallicity, highly ionized galaxies falling in the upper left corner. Drawing from a large sample of UV-selected star-forming galaxies at z~2 with rest-frame optical nebular emission line measurements from Keck-MOSFIRE, we select the extreme ~5% of the galaxies lying in this upper left corner, requiring log([NII]/H-alpha) <= 1.1 and log([OIII]/H-beta) >= 0.75. These cuts identify galaxies with 12 + log(O/H) <~ 8.0, when oxygen abundances are measured via the O3N2 diagnostic. We study the …
We report new observations of SL2SJ021737-051329, a lens system consisting of a bright arc at z=1.84435, magnified ~17x by a massive galaxy at z=0.65. SL2SJ0217 is a low-mass (M <10^9 M*), low-metallicity (Z~1/20 Z*) galaxy, with extreme star-forming conditions that produce strong nebular UV emission lines in the absence of any apparent outflows. Here we present several notable features from rest-frame UV Keck/LRIS spectroscopy: (1) Very strong narrow emission lines are measured for CIV 1548,1550, HeII 1640, OIII] 1661,1666, SiIII] 1883,1892, and CIII] 1907,1909. (2) Double-peaked LyA emission…
We examine Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage through H II regions regulated by turbulence and radiative feedback in a giant molecular cloud in the context of fully-coupled radiation hydrodynamics (RHD). The physical relations of the LyC escape with H I covering fraction, kinematics, spectral hardness, and the emergent Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) line profiles are studied using a series of RHD turbulence simulations performed with RAMSES-RT. The turbulence-regulated mechanism allows ionizing photons to leak out at early times before the onset of supernova feedback. The LyC photons escape through turbulence-g…
We use a large sample of galaxies at z~3 to establish a relationship between reddening, neutral gas covering fraction (fcov(HI)), and the escape of ionizing photons at high redshift. Our sample includes 933 galaxies at z~3, 121 of which have very deep spectroscopic observations (>7 hrs) in the rest-UV (lambda=850-1300 A) with Keck/LRIS. Based on the high covering fraction of outflowing optically-thick HI indicated by the composite spectra of these galaxies, we conclude that photoelectric absorption, rather than dust attenuation, dominates the depletion of ionizing photons. By modeling the comp…

One of the most challenging aspects of studying galaxies in the z>~7 universe is the infrequent confirmation of their redshifts through spectroscopy, a phenomenon thought to occur from the increasing opacity of the intergalactic medium to Lya photons at z>6.5. The resulting redshift uncertainties inhibit the efficient search for [C II] in z~7 galaxies with sub-mm instruments such as ALMA, given their limited scan speed for faint lines. One means by which to improve the precision of the inferred redshifts is to exploit the potential impact of strong nebular emission lines on the colors of z~4-8…
