The idea of neutrino-assisted early dark energy ($ν$EDE), where a coupling between neutrinos and the scalar field that models early dark energy (EDE) is considered, was introduced with the aim of reducing some of the fine-tuning and coincidence problems that appear in usual EDE models. In order to be relevant in ameliorating the $H_0$ tension, the contribution of EDE to the total energy density ($f_\text{EDE}$) should be around 10\% near the redshift of matter-radiation equality. We verify under which conditions $ν$EDE models can fulfill these requirements for a model with a quartic self-coupling of the EDE field and an exponential coupling to neutrinos. We find that in the situation where the EDE field is frozen initially, the contribution to $f_\text{EDE}$ can be significant but it is not sensitive to the neutrino-EDE coupling and does not address the EDE coincidence problem. On the other hand, if the EDE field starts already dynamical at the minimum of the effective potential, it tracks this time-dependent minimum that presents a feature triggered by the neutrino transition from relativistic to nonrelativistic particles. This feature generates $f_\text{EDE}$ in a natural way at around this transition epoch, that roughly coincides with the matter-radiation equality redshift. For the set of parameters that we considered we did not find values that satisfy the requirements on the background cosmological evolution to mitigate the Hubble tension in a natural way in this particular $ν$EDE model.
The disagreement between direct late-time measurements of the Hubble constant from the SH0ES collaboration, and early-universe measurements based on the $Λ$CDM model from the Planck collaboration might, at least in principle, be explained by new physics in the early universe. Recently, the application of the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure to the full shape of the power spectrum of the SDSS/BOSS data has revealed a new, rather powerful, way to measure the Hubble constant and the other cosmological parameters from Large-Scale Structure surveys. In light of this, we analyze two m…
It has very recently been claimed that the neutrino-assisted early dark energy model -- a promising resolution of the Hubble tension that can ameliorate the theoretical fine-tuning and coincidence problems that plague other theories -- does not provide natural or cosmologically interesting results. In this short paper, we show that these conclusions are incorrect for three reasons. First, we identify errors in the calculations. Second, we dispute the definition in of what constitutes an 'interesting' and 'natural' model. Finally, we demonstrate that the conclusions of were arrived at without f…
We study the fit of cosmological models with two additional free parameters $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and $ξ_e$ in addition to the parameters of $Λ$CDM. We introduce extra radiation components such as hot axions or sterile neutrinos in addition to the energy density of neutrinos with large neutrino degeneracy. Then, a larger $N_\mathrm{eff}$ is allowed without spoiling Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), as positive neutrino degeneracy $ξ_e$ could improve BBN fit. By analysing the data from Planck, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), BBN and type-Ia supernovae (SNeIa), it can be seen that the Hubble tension…
The tension between current expansion rate H$_0$ using Planck data and direct model-independent measurements in the local universe has reached a tension above 5$σ$ in the context of the $Λ$CDM model. The growing tension among early time and local measurements of H$_0$ has not ameliorated and remains a crucial and open question in cosmology. Solutions to understand this tension are possible hidden sources of systematic error in the observable measurements or modifications to the concordance $Λ$CDM model. In this work, we investigate a solution to the H$_0$ tension by modifying $Λ$CDM and we add…
Taking the Planck cosmic microwave background data and the more direct Hubble constant measurement data as unaffected by systematic offsets, the values of the Hubble constant $H_0$ interpreted within the $Λ$CDM cosmological constant and cold dark matter cosmological model are in $\sim 3.3 σ$ tension. We show that the Parker vacuum metamorphosis model, physically motivated by quantum gravitational effects and with the same number of parameters as $Λ$CDM, can remove the $H_0$ tension, and can give an improved fit to data (up to $Δχ^2=-7.5$). It also ameliorates tensions with weak lensing data an…
If a fraction of the dark matter is unstable and decays into dark radiation at around the time of matter-radiation equality, it could impact the expansion history of the universe in a way that helps to ameliorate the long-standing tension between the locally measured value of the Hubble constant and the value inferred from measurements of the cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillations (assuming standard $Λ$CDM cosmology). If this component of decaying dark matter is cold, however, it will modify the evolution of the gravitational potentials, leading to inconsistencies with th…
The majoron, a pseudo-Goldstone boson arising from the spontaneous breaking of global lepton number, is a generic feature of many models intended to explain the origin of the small neutrino masses. In this work, we investigate potential imprints in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) arising from massive majorons, should they thermalize with neutrinos after Big Bang Nucleosynthesis via inverse neutrino decays. We show that Planck2018 measurements of the CMB are currently sensitive to neutrino-majoron couplings as small as $λ\sim 10^{-13}$, which if interpreted in the context of the type-I se…
The majoron, a neutrinophilic pseudo-Goldstone boson conventionally arising in the context of neutrino mass models, can damp neutrino free-streaming and inject additional energy density into neutrinos prior to recombination. The combination of these effects for an eV-scale mass majoron has been shown to ameliorate the outstanding $H_0$ tension, however only if one introduces additional dark radiation at the level of $ΔN_{\rm eff} \sim 0.5$. We show here that models of low-scale leptogenesis can naturally source this dark radiation by generating a primordial population of majorons from the deca…
The tension between measurements of the Hubble constant obtained at different redshifts may provide a hint of new physics active in the relatively early universe, around the epoch of matter-radiation equality. A leading paradigm to resolve the tension is a period of early dark energy, in which a scalar field contributes a subdominant part of the energy budget of the universe at this time. This scenario faces significant fine-tuning problems which can be ameliorated by a non-trivial coupling of the scalar to the standard model neutrinos. These become non-relativistic close to the time of matter…
Early dark energy, as a proposed solution to the Hubble tension, faces an additional "why now" problem. Why should dark energy emerge just prior to recombination, billions of years before the onset of cosmic acceleration? Assisted quintessence explains this connection by positing that multiple scaling fields build up over time to drive the present-day cosmic acceleration. In this framework, early dark energy is inevitable. Yet, we show that scaling also leads to the demise of the scenario: the same feature that solves the coincidence problem then spoils a concordance of the Hubble constant inf…
Addressing the discrepancy between the late and early time measurements of the Hubble parameter, $H_0$, and the so-called $S_8$ parameter has been a challenge in precision cosmology. Several models are present to address these tensions, but very few of them can do so simultaneously. In the past, we have suggested Banks-Zaks/Unparticles as an emergent Dark Energy model and claimed that it can ameliorate the Hubble tension. In this work, we test this claim and perform a likelihood analysis of the model and its parameters are given current data and compare it to $Λ$CDM. The model offers a possibl…
[Abridged] We realize the Agrawal-Obied-Vafa (AOV) swampland proposal of fading dark matter by the model of Salam-Sezgin and its string realization of Cvetic-Gibbons-Pope. The model describes a compactification of 6-dimensional supergravity with a monopole background on a 2-sphere. In 4 dimensions, there are 2 scalar fields, $X$ and $Y $, and the effective potential in the Einstein frame is an exponential with respect to $Y$ times a quadratic polynomial in the field $e^{-X}$. When making the volume of the 2-sphere large, namely for large values of $Y$, there appears a tower of states, which ac…
We consider the interplay of the Early Dark Energy (EDE) model, the Swampland Distance Conjecture (SDC), and cosmological parameter tensions. EDE is a proposed resolution of the Hubble tension relying upon a near-Planckian scalar field excursion, while the SDC predicts an exponential sensitivity of masses of other fields to such an excursion, $m\propto e^{-c|Δϕ|/M_{\rm pl}}$ with $c\sim{\cal O}(1)$. Meanwhile, EDE is in tension with large-scale structure (LSS) data, due to shifts in the standard $Λ$CDM parameters necessary to fit the cosmic microwave background (CMB). One might hope that a pro…
Early dark energy has emerged as one of the more promising approaches to address the Hubble tension - the statistically significant disparity between measurements of the Hubble constant made using data from different epochs in cosmic history. However, the idea is not without its own set of challenges, both from the data, in the effects it has on other measurements, such as the large-scale structure tension, and from theoretical concerns such as technical naturalness and the introduction of a new coincidence problem in cosmology. In this brief note, delivered as an invited plenary lecture at th…
Light new vector bosons can be produced gravitationally through quantum fluctuations during inflation; if these particles are feebly coupled and cosmologically metastable, they can account for the observed dark matter abundance. However, in minimal anomaly free $U(1)$ extensions to the Standard Model, these vectors generically decay to neutrinos if at least one neutrino mass eigenstate is sufficiently light. If these decays occur between neutrino decoupling and CMB freeze out, the resulting radiation energy density can contribute to $ΔN_{\rm eff}$ at levels that can ameliorate the Hubble tensi…
Sterile neutrinos can be generated in the early universe through oscillations with active neutrinos and represent a popular and well-studied candidate for our universe's dark matter. Stringent constraints from X-ray and gamma-ray line searches, however, have excluded the simplest of such models. In this letter, we propose a novel alternative to the standard scenario in which the mixing angle between the sterile and active neutrinos is a dynamical quantity, induced through interactions with a light axion-like field. As the energy density of the axion-like particles is diluted by Hubble expansio…
The long-standing $4.2 \, σ$ muon $g-2$ anomaly may be the result of a new particle species which could also couple to dark matter and mediate its annihilations in the early universe. In models where both muons and dark matter carry equal charges under a $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ gauge symmetry, the corresponding $Z^\prime$ can both resolve the observed $g-2$ anomaly and yield an acceptable dark matter relic abundance, relying on annihilations which take place through the $Z^\prime$ resonance. Once the value of $(g-2)_μ$ and the dark matter abundance are each fixed, there is very little remaining freed…
