This note presents some of the results obtained in arXiv:2207.05410 and it has beenthe object of a talk of the second author during the Journées "Équations auxDérivées Partielles" (Obernai, june 2022). We study properties of geodesics that are orthogonal to two convex subsets of the flat torus. We discuss meromorphic properties of a geometric Epstein zeta function associated to the set of lengths of such orthogeodesics. We also define the associated length distribution and discuss singularities of its Fourier transform. Our analysis relies on a fine study of the dynamical correlation function of the geodesic flow on the torus and the definition of anisotropic Sobolev spaces that are well-adapted to this integrable dynamics.
This survey article deals with a delta potential - also known as a point scatterer - on flat 2D and 3D tori. We introduce the main conjectures regarding the spectral and wave function statistics of this model in the so- called weak and strong coupling regimes. We report on recent progress as well as a number of open problems in this field.
We consider generalized Hodge-Laplace operators $αd δ+ βδd$ for $α, β> 0$ on $p$-forms on compact Riemannian manifolds. In the case of flat tori and round spheres of different radii, we explicitly calculate the spectrum of these operators. Furthermore, we investigate under which circumstances they are isospectral.
We evaluate the triple correlation of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on generic flat tori in an averaged sense. As two consequence we show that (a) the limit inferior (resp. limit superior) of the triple correlation is almost surely at most (resp. at least) Poissonian, and that (b) almost all flat tori contain infinitely many gaps in their spectrum that are at least 2.006 times longer than the average gap. The significance of the constant 2.006 lies in the fact that there exist sequences with Poissonian pair correlation and with consecutive spacings bounded uniformly from above by 2, as we also …
The Quantum Loschmidt Echo is a measurement of the sensitivity of a quantum system to perturbations of the Hamiltonian. In the case of the standard 2-torus, we derive some explicit formulae for this quantity in the transition regime where it is expected to decay in the semiclassical limit. The expression involves both a two-microlocal defect measure of the initial data and the form of the perturbation. As an application, we exhibit a non-concentration criterium on the sequence of initial data under which one does not observe a macroscopic decay of the Quantum Loschmidt Echo. We also apply our …
In this paper we give a survey on how to apply recent techniques of Clifford analysis over conformally flat manifolds to deal with instationary flow problems on cylinders and tori. Solutions are represented in terms of integral operators involving explicit expressions for the Cauchy kernel that are associated to the parabolic Dirac operators acting on spinor sections of these manifolds.
In this paper we study the parabolic evolution equation $\partial_t u=(|Du|^{2}+2|\det Du|)^{-1} Δu$, where $u : M\times[0,\infty) \to N$ is an evolving map between compact flat surfaces. We use a tensor maximum principle for the induced metric to establish two-sided bounds on the singular values of Du, which shows that unlike harmonic map heat flow, this flow preserves diffeomorphisms. A change of variables for Du then allows us to establish a $C^α$ estimate for the coefficient of the tension field, and thus (thanks to the quasilinear structure and the Schauder estimates) we get full regulari…
We show that the Green functions on flat tori can have either 3 or 5 critical points only. There does not seemto be any directmethod to attack this problem. Instead, we have to employ sophisticated non-linear partial differential equations to study it. We also study the distribution of number of critical points over the moduli space of flat tori through deformations. The functional equations of special theta values provide important inequalities which lead to a solution for all rhombus tori.
This paper is concerned with the maximisation of the k'th eigenvalue of the Laplacian amongst flat tori of unit volume in dimension d as k goes to infinity. We show that in any dimension maximisers exist for any given k, but that any sequence of maximisers degenerates as k goes to infinity when the dimension is at most 10. Furthermore, we obtain specific upper and lower bounds for the injectivity radius of any sequence of maximisers. We also prove that flat Klein bottles maximising the k'th eigenvalue of the Laplacian exhibit the same behaviour. These results contrast with those obtained recen…
We consider a class of linear time dependent Schrödinger equations and quasi-periodically forced nonlinear Hamiltonian wave/Klein Gordon and Schrödinger equations on arbitrary flat tori. For the linear Schrödinger equation, we prove a $t^ε$ $(\forall ε>0)$ upper bound for the growth of the Sobolev norms as the time goes to infinity. For the nonlinear Hamiltonian PDEs we construct families of time quasi-periodic solutions. Both results are based on "clusterization properties" of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a flat torus and on suitable "separation properties" of the singular sites of Sch…
We prove a formula for the determinant of Laplacian on an arbitrary compact polyhedral surface of genus one. This formula generalizes the well-known Ray-Singer result for a flat torus. A special case of flat conical metrics given by the modulus of a meromorphic quadratic differential on an elliptic surface is also considered. We study the determinant of Laplacian as a functional on the moduli space of meromorphic quadratic differentials with L simple poles and L simple zeros and derive formulas for variations of this functional w. r. t. natural coordinates on this moduli space. A new proof of …
It is known from \cite{LW} that the solvability of the mean field equation $Δu+e^{u}=8nπδ_{0}$ with $n\in\mathbb{N}_{\geq 1}$ on a flat torus $E_τ$ essentially depends on the geometry of $E_τ$. A conjecture is the non-existence of solutions for this equation if $E_τ$ is a rectangular torus, which was proved for $n=1$ in \cite{LW}. For any $n\in \mathbb{N}_{\geq2}$, this conjecture seems challenging from the viewpoint of PDE theory. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for $n=2$ (i.e. at critical parameter $16π$).
We study symmetry of solutions of the mean field equation \[ Δu +ρ(\frac{Ke^u}{\int_{T_ε} Ke^u} -\frac{1}{|T_ε|} )=0\] on the flat torus $T_ε=[-\frac{1}{2ε}, \frac{1}{2ε}] \times [-\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}]$ with $0<ε\leq 1$, where $K\in C^2({T}_ε)$ is a positive function with $-Δ\ln K \leq \fracρ{|T_ε|}$ and $ρ\leq 8π$. We prove that if $(x_0,y_0)$ is a critical point of the function $u+ln(K)$, then $u$ is evenly symmetric about the lines $x=x_0$ and $y=y_0$, provided $K$ is evenly symmetric about these lines. In particular we show that all solutions are one-dimensional if $K\equiv 1$ and $ρ\…
This paper focuses on the development of harmonic and Clifford analysis techniques in the context of some conformally flat manifolds that arise from factoring out a simply-connected domain from $R^n$ by special arithmetic subgroups of the conformal group. Our discussion encompasses in particular the Hopf manifold $S^1 \times S^{n-1}$, conformally flat cylinders and tori and some conformally flat manifolds of genus $g \ge 2$, such as $k$-handled tori and polycylinders. This paper provides a continuation as well as an extension of our previous two papers \cite{KraRyan1,KraRyan2}. In particular, …
We prove that there exist Beltrami fields in Euclidean space, with sharp decay at infinity, which have a prescribed set of invariant tori (possibly knotted or linked) that enclose an arbitrarily large number of hyperbolic periodic orbits. These hyperbolic orbits are cablings over the core curve of each torus. Moreover, the domain bounded by each invariant torus is covered by an almost full measure set of invariant tori. We show that an analogous result holds for high-frequency Beltrami fields on the flat 3-torus.
In this note, we discuss a question posed by T. Hoffmann-Ostenhof concerning the parity of the number of nodal domains for a non-constant eigenfunction of the Laplacian on flat tori. We present two results. We first show that on the torus $(\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z})^{2}$, a non-constant eigenfunction has an even number of nodal domains. We then consider the torus $(\mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z})\times(\mathbb{R}/2ρπ\mathbb{Z})\,$, with $ρ=\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}\,$, and construct on it an eigenfunction with three nodal domains.
We prove Strichartz estimates on general flat d-torus for arbitrary d. Using these estimates, we prove local wellposedness for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations in appropriate Sobolev spaces. In dimensions 2 and 3, we prove polynomial bounds on the possible growth of Sobolev norms of smooth solutions.
